Portable, does what it is suppose to.......2007-03-31
This device has a USB female to female cable, and thus can be connected direct, or connected via the cable. I leave the cable on my computer, and carry this with me in my bag. It is very, very lightweight, and I really like that the USB cable on the device slides into a little slot and does not dangle outside.
When installed, it does assign a drive letter to each memory card slot (5 I think), so you may need to modify the drive letter assignments to get it to work.
It has worked flawlessly for me for my camera cards and file storage.
GOOD CARD READER BUT LOOK AROUND FIRST.......2007-03-28
This is one of the fastest card readers i have used. Good card reader but look around Amazon before you purchase this card reader. Only after I purchased this reader, I realized that there are card readers on Amazon that read xd cards and are also cheaper.
Fast reader.......2007-02-15
This reader is among the faster ones that I've tried. I was able to get about 6 MB/sec when reading from a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II CompactFlash card. The fact that the cord tucks into the side of the reader is a nice touch that makes it easy to travel with. I don't have to carry lots of cables with me.
Beware that the Amazon picture is slightly misleading as the device has been updated and no longer matches the picture. The new version is slightly bigger: It's actual dimensions are 4.4" x 3" x 0.6".
Works, but Write/Delete Problems.......2007-01-19
It usually works like it says it should, but at times, I keep receiving weird write errors when trying to move or delete data from the card. This happens only with SD cards, but happens with multiple brands and sizes (32MB, 128MB, 512MB, 2GB). CF cards work fine though.
When writing, moving or deleting data doesn't work, I usually just have to unplug the entire unit and plug it back in, and then it seems to function properly. I'm not sure if I have a defective unit or something's wrong with the SD card sensor.
Otherwise, though, everything works fine.
Quick and Easy.......2007-01-04
I am a Mac user, and sometimes question how hassle-free (or vice versa, how hassle-full) incorporating a new accessory will be. This card reader simply plugged in and started working. AND it is so much faster than using my USB from the cameras to the computer. I have used with SD cards and Compact Flash, and it works very well with both.

I have a couple of these readers (home and office) and have been very satisfied with how they work. It reads most kinds of cards though I only use SD media. It is fairly compact and a good value for the money. Much faster downloads than depending on the camera USB cable. I would recommend this.
Hack - open the case.......2006-12-23
Lexar USB2.0 reader went from erratic to consistently dead. Playing with the software was annoying, it seems to crash Windows Explorer or Computer management very easily. Open the case (remove screw under label, pry open plastic), press on some parts, worked. Suspect L1 very near the USB connector. Anyway it seems to work pretty well without the case.

Dead On Arrival..........2006-04-29
While I read the reviews on this machine, it is clear to me that Lexar has some serious quality-control problems. For some people it worked, for others it was a miserable failure. I am in the latter group. Sigh.
Mine was dead on arrival. I tried the device with *BOTH* of my Windows-XP machines and in both cases, it was unrecognized. Lexar tech support subsequently proved to be a contradiction in terms as they would not return my email requests for help.

Have used it with several different type/brand cards succesfully. Have also used on three different computers successfully. This looks like it is very closely related to the LaCie 108092 8-in-1 Media Reader.

I have this item to cool my DirecTV receiver. It runs all day and night and changed the temp of the receiver from too hot to touch to a reasonably cool temp. It certainly does its cooling job well. I cannot attest to its durability in a laptop/travel application, as mine just sits in an equipment closet.

This fan doesnt cool my computer at all. It is too expensive. I bought a cheaper fan that cools my computer much better. I'm ready to throw this fan away.
Pretty decent........2007-07-12
Before I ordered this product my computer would overheat and shutdown after a couple hours of working. But after buying this product it hasn't shutdown once. It does what it's made to do. its dimensions are smaller than that of my laptop, but that might be a fault on my part for not researching that part. the card reader and extra USB ports are very handy. yup.
Better Than Expected, But Could Have Been Better.......2007-06-20
When doing intense operations, my MacBook Pro gets pretty hot. This is most evident when playing Oblivion, one of my favorite computer games, under Windows XP. Normally the computer's fans would be going at full force after about 7 minutes of playing, and the machine would still be so hot that I'd work up a sweat.
In my opinion, laptops shouldn't need cooling pads. Heating up to the point of discomfort is a design flaw that the manufacturer (be it Apple, Dell, Alienware, Toshiba or whoever) should have addressed. I think (hope) that in the future, these sorts of things won't be overlooked in favor of performance.
I was considering this cooling pad that houses 3 fans instead of 2, and yet another that was designed specifically for MacBooks and MacBook Pros. These were both made out of aluminum, which would have helped alleviate the heat. But since the Phoenix was the same price as the Eforcity but didn't include the card reader, and since the NotePal was even more expensive and didn't house a third fan OR a card reader, I chose the Eforcity Chill Pad.
The construction on the Chill Pad isn't bad. It's made out of plastic, but it's durable and lightweight. It's also thin, so it's something that can be packed up into a laptop bag and carried along. The fans are quiet, as reported by other reviewers. They're much quieter than my MacBook's fans at full speed. With the laptop on top of the pad, I can hardly hear them. The USB cord and AC adapter are both good quality; not cheap, thin cords that will easily break.
I do have two complaints with the physical design. First is that my MacBook Pro hangs over the pad by several inches. This is not something that will apply to everyone, and it doesn't affect the pad's ability to cool. But it was also one of the reasons I was eying the NotePal. The second problem is that there aren't any built-in grips to stop a laptop the size of mine from sliding around on top. If your laptop has rubber feet on the bottom and doesn't hang over the edge of the pad, you'll be fine. Me, I'll be remedying it by installing my own rubber feet onto the pad.
My initial test, of course, was opening up Oblivion and playing. I suppose that the absolute best results would have been for the laptop's fans to not come on at all, but I think it's unreasonable to expect that from two small fans. The internal laptop fans did come on while playing, but later than usual, and still not at full speed. Even after playing for about 15 minutes, the fans still weren't going at full force. When not doing anything intense on the laptop, the bottom actually gets cool to the touch. So the pad does cool about as well as I expected, if not slightly better.
Originally I wrote that the card reader on mine was a major disappointment. I have two different digital cameras; one that reads Smart Media and another that reads Compact Flash. I tried both of those cards with the MacBook booted into MacOS X, and they both sporadically disappeared and reappeared after being inserted into the card reader. I thought they might have just been not pushed in far enough, but they're in as far as they'll go. The hub worked like a charm though, so I was certain the card reader was faulty. However, after I booted into Windows, the card reader worked fine on both cards. This led me to believe that (unfortunately) the card reader was only faulty under MacOS X. This may have had something to do with me plugging the cord in after the OS had already booted, but that's no excuse. (Whoever's responsible... I'm not sure.)
The pad lost points for the Windows-only card reader, the laptop slippage, and the overlap. I also would have preferred an aluminum construction for the sake of heat dissipation. But the solid construction, USB hub and decent cooling makes me satisfied with my purchase.
If you don't need the extra USB ports or the card reader, I would probably recommend trying the aforementioned Phoenix cooling pad. The open sides, third fan and aluminum construction are bound to outperform this pad, and unless I got a lemon, you won't miss the card reader. I'm satisfied, but more discerning customers may not be.

If you use SanDisk SD memory cards beware!!!!.......2004-08-17
I bought the Viking Intelliflash 6-in-1 USB Flash Memory Reader with the hopes of being able to save battery life on a digital camera. However, on trying an SD memory card from a camcorder I have, it ruined the card and said "files corrupted" and I lost all the pics. I read some of the other reviews and realised the problem lied with the SanDisk memory card I used.
I later tried a Kingston Memory Card I had bought for the digital camera and it worked fine.

This is a piece of junk.
The first time I inserted a smart media card, the card went all the way into the unit. To get it out, I had to call customer support who told me how to disassemble the unit so that I could extract it. Great start!
It does not consistently read CF cards.
Bottom line-stay away.
Corrupted first disk I tried.......2004-07-11
I tried this the first time with a brand new SD bought on vacation - could see pictures fine on camera but when used this Viking memory reader said disk and files corrupted. Was able to retrieve all but first five photos fortunately - unfortunately one of the five photos was a precious one that cannot be retrieved that was the main reason for the trip (daughter and father dancing).

I use several different types of cards for my camera and PDA, so I figured this would be a great thing to have. Installation is very easy, especially under Windows XP, where it it true Plug-and-Play. For other systems there is a CD with drivers included.
What is supposed to happen is that when it installs is that it will maps an addition four drives onto your computer; one for each slot. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be able to map the Smart Media drive. Even after installing the drivers off of the disc it was not able to read the SM drive.
I had two of these things; the first I exchanged for a new one after it failed to read anything. On the first one the slots weren't mounted to the face plate correctly, so when I put in the Smart Media card it fell into the back of the device and I had to spent five minuets shaking the thing out.
The second one I got was mounted correctly, but unable to read the SM cards. While it could read the Secure Digital card, it erased everything on it. Fortunatly I only had a couple of files on it, but a lot of people use SD cards for storing programs or pictures, and they would have lost everything if they used this. The Compact Flash card was the only one that worked reliably, but even that one I had problems with since it was difficult to jam the card all of the way into the slot.
I am very dissapointed with this device and with Viking, who usually makes good products. Most people don't use all six types of cards, so a lot of them would go to waste, so I would recomend just getting seperate readers for each card. It'll cost more, but probably worth it in the long run.
On a side note, I would just like to say that Amazon.com has an excellent No-questions-asked return policy. After I asked to replace my first one they paided the return postage and sent me a new one two days later.
Doesn't work with SD Cards.......2004-05-17

I got the following response from Viking Tech Support on May 17, 2004:
"We have had a few customers report seeing problems with some Sandisk cards. It appears to be a compatibility issue with Sandisk's new SD cards and the reader. The new Sandisk cards read/write speeds are faster than their older cards, and this difference may be the cause of the error.
Currently Engineering is looking at the problem. When we find a resolution I will send you an update."
