Good product.......2007-06-25

I have had this DVD recorder for more than 3 years now, its an excellent product. I makde dvd's from my Hi-8 Camcorder.

I am pleased with this product.

I like it but.................2006-05-21

This is the first dvd recorder I ever purchased. I checked around for the machine requirement I woul like to have (region free, play and record dvd+r and easy to install and operate) this was the one I was recommended. I following the directions and got it to work and play fine the next day. I recorded tv programs with a dvd+rw, no problem, also I finalized the dvd+R. I transferred vhs to dvd+R , very easy. But when I tried to play the dvd+R and the dvd+rw, it would not play on my other two dvd players ( keep saying, check disk), I call the company and they told me that if I finalized the disk, it should not be a problem. The solution was to copy the movie or program on Akai, go to my computer PC (all my other dvd+r were burned on this pc) burned it again as region 1. This way I could see the movie using all my dvd players. The dvd-rw I copy with AKAI only played on the AKAI. Too much work. I sent it back. I recommended for the easy set-up, the picture quality was great and if you only going to play the dvd+R and DVD+RW recorded on this machine. Otherwise, think about it.

My recorder was delivered three days ago. I was very nervous, anticipated the worst based on the reviews. However I have been completely delighted with the machine. For starters, the system navigation is pretty straight forward. I was doing a test recording literally 10 minutes after taking the recorder out of the box. It worked no problem (Memorex 4x DVD+RW). Over the weekend I have tried every feature and I have experimented with various hook up configurations. Every thing works great! Regarding image quality: on EP (4 hour recording time) the image is still considerably better than VHS. With prerecorded discs using the component video cables, the color is vibrant and full and the overall effect is very much like watching film (I have a tube HD TV).

My only complaints include that response time (eg time from when you put the disk in and execute some command) is a little slow, and it does't allow the cable signal to 'pass through' when the unit is off.

So for the price ($145 - unit, shipping and a 3 year warranty) I am happy.

Good Picture. .......2005-11-04

I have had mine for a little less then a year. The recorded picture quality is very good both on EP and SP. Like the previous reviewer, I also am having problems with the drive not opening and closing. When I do manage to get it open, it will not read the DVD unless I open and shut it a few times. This must be a defect in this model. Buyer beware.

Need a replacement drive.......2005-09-18

Hi, bought mine a year ago.... now, the tray won't come out. Grrr.... anyone know what LiteOn DVD+-R/W model would work as a replacement? (I could work with the front bezel off... he he he, but that's not good) The PC dvd recorders here are just cheap anyway.

The unit itself is solid... I even can record blindly (without a TV) he he he... a larger than normal oversample space though. Big, like 10-15% I think.

When I ordered it I actually received a slightly different product than what is pictured here, but I think it is just a newer model. Same number of outputs, but it is really, really small - only about 4 inches square including the connectors. I had a crummy picture on a couple of TVs, and the digital cable would drop out and pixel once in a while. I replaced 2 splitters with this thing and now my channels stay clear across the board, and my tivo dvr looks a lot better too.

The only thing left is my cable modem, and I was told not to connect it to this amp, plus I did not have enough ports to connect it. There is another product that I was thinking of trying, supposedly you can connect anything to it and it will work - including a cable modem.

Pulled amp into over the air antenna and got no better reception on both HD and regular channels. Tried on two different tv's in two different areas of the house. I will try it on Cable signal and revise my comment. I would not waste the money if you are just using this on a regular antenna.

Best splitter I ever used.......2007-04-16

After getting my first HDTV, I was dismayed that my signal was too low to maintain a constant picture (even on non-HD channels). Having multiple devices requiring a cable signal, I needed to amplify as well as split my incoming signal. This splitter/amplifier did the trick! Very high quality item. Solidly built. Everyone should buy this thing!

Nice amp.......2006-10-29

The amp appears to do a good job improving my signal strength. It feels like a well built professional amplifier unlike the junk you find in Radio Shack, Walmart, etc. I like that you can inject the power into the wiring network from any location but I didn't need to do that.

Celestron's recently introduced line of "Advanced Series" astronomical telescopes combine many of their most popular instruments with souped-up, heavy duty German equatorial mounts. The net result is a family of telescopes that combines very good optics and reasonably sturdy, computer-driven mounts at affordable prices.

The Celestron C8 S-GT is one such package. The latest of many C8 incarnations since it was first introduced in 1970, the C8 S-GT bears more than a passing resemblance to its predecessors. Like earlier models, the C8 S-GT is built around Celestron's 8-inch f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope assembly. Inside, an 8-inch primary mirror reflects light to a smaller secondary mirror at the top end of the tube. Light is then directed back through a central hole in the primary, and into the eyepiece. Focusing is done by turning a small knob on the tailstock of the instrument.

The C8 S-GT comes on the CG-5GT mount and tripod, which includes a NexStar onboard computer drive and hand controller. Once the mounting is initialized by aiming its polar axis roughly toward the celestial pole and calibrating the instrument with three alignment stars, a procedure that's well documented in the instruction manual, the telescope is ready to use.

The NexStar computerized goto system is powered with 12-volts DC for easy use in the field. Because of power requirements, however, Celestron does not include a dry-cell battery holder, as some DC-powered telescopes do. Instead, they include a 24-foot cord to plug into an automobile cigarette lighter or rechargeable battery, which makes much more sense. A 110-volt AC adapter is sold separately.

Testing the optical quality of the C8 S-GT revealed that my test telescope had a final wavefront error of about 1/4 wave, which is considered "diffraction limited." This means that the telescope will perform up to the limits of atmospheric conditions. In actual use, images of brighter objects, such as the planets, had a slight haze around them. Still, Saturn was certainly sharp enough to distinguish Cassini's Division as well as the planet's subtle equatorial belt, while Jupiter's banded atmosphere showed a good amount of detail. Double stars, such as Castor and Rigel, were easy to resolve, especially when I replaced the standard 25-mm Plössl (81x) with a shorter focal length eyepiece from my own collection.

The NexStar GoTo system performed very well night after night. At each stop, the target was either within or very near the field of the C8 S-GT's 25-mm eyepiece. Try as I might, I only managed to the CG-5GT mount into a mental tailspin once when I told it to find Polaris. It must have thought I had moved to Australia, as the telescope stopped nose down to the ground. After reinitializing the mount and selecting Polaris a second time, everything worked as it should.

Overall stability of the Advanced Series CG-5GT mount is much better than earlier CG-5s thanks to the sturdier tripod. A direct comparison between the new CG-5GT and my own, older CG-5 confirmed that vibration-dampening times have been almost cut in half with the new tripod. It's still a little too wobbly for long photographic time exposures through the telescope, but is quite acceptable for a visual instrument.
