Second unit.......2007-09-12

My first unit died after 13 months. Fortunately, it was only a backup unit and I didn't loose anything substantial.
I had an extended warranty thru Comp-USA and they were GREAT about taking care of it.

I am on my second unit for two months now and so far so good. I have another 75 gig drive that has been working fine for years. Never a bump. But it is by another maker.

I would love to recommend this unit cause when it works, it works GREAT! I guess I will know better in 11 months. Let's see it this one dies too.

Top of the line.......2007-01-11

I now have four of these units (over a terabyte), and for my money, they're the best I've seen/used in 20 years. Their function is absolutely silent and dead on reliable. I never have problems hot connecting them, and NEVER have mounting problems as I occasionally do with some cheaper drives.

The ONLY recommendation I would make would to be to TRASH, instantly, any versions of Retrospect and find a more capable (and stable) backup program. I believe I'll now settle on Synk.

Other than that, I am extremely pleased with these drives and intend to pruchase unints for back for both my kids' and my wife's machine, no to mention my newest laptop.

Let me get something straight really quick: I'm no expert in the ways or functioning of computers.

There. Now you know.

Basically, this thing is amazing. It's compact, it's quiet, and it's SOLID. Not that I recommend dropping it to test its durability, but the casing is made of metal. Not the seemingly flimsy plastic you'll find in 80% of external hard drives nowadays. PC users that want to store files larger than 4 GB, don't get worried when it tells you there isn't space on the drive for them. You just need to re-format it first (which takes a little while). The tax bumped up the cost to approximately $205, but the shipping was free and FAST (I ordered it on a Friday and received it the following Monday).

My only complaint is that it is advertised as being a 320 GB drive, whereas my PC tells me it only has 298. :/ While that's nothing to scoff at, those extra 22 GB are very significant to me, as I only plan on having one of these. Not to mention, I paid for them.

Ultimately though, I'd definitely sacrifice the memory lost for the quality I've got. If you're looking for a professional-looking, well-built, high-performance piece of hardware and don't mind compromising for it, look no further.

You have found the promised land.

I bought this drive not even a year ago, and it's already dead. Yes, it worked very nicely, as the other reviewers describe...but the fact that it failed so quickly negates what I liked about it. Nice features don't matter if they don't last.

This is a good solid drive that has fulfilled the promises of the manufacturer for 6 months now. It is very quiet and runs cool. It connects effortslessly to my Apple iMac G5 and is bootable on my Power Mac G4 Digital Audio. I will be buying another one.

This drive is noisier than other external hard drives I've used (Seagate, Maxtor), but works well for system backups. The blue LED on the front is very bright. Includes a dual-voltage power supply.

i bought this a few months ago,
pretty expensive but i thought it would be nice cuz of all its features. it stopped working, it tooke me 35 minutes to get someone on the phone and they said tech support was unavailable. I decided to remove the sleeve to see if there was a way of reseting the button. i did not intend to open it but as soon as i pulled on the sleeve, the drive open and after 10 minutes of removing the whole sleeve i found a sticker saying the warranty was void if it was opened. i didnt open it, it fell open. and i called again and said it was my fault because the sleeve was not meant to be removed and the sticker used to be on the outside --- on their old model. so yeah, dont buy from this company, this is a cheap product that will get you bad results. an easy waste of money and time.

I own two of these and will soon be buying a third. After owning a LaCie (HUGE mistake), odds are I will only be buying Acomdata from now on. I do audio and video work on Macs, and these units absolutely do not disappoint.

If you are looking for a lot of storage space and an easy-to-use device, this is it! I have a Mac and have had no compatability problems. I have not tried yet, but am told that I can use it with PCs as well.
If you are looking for something portable though, this is not it.
It has no USB port.

This is a great product. Very well made, solid and compact. I have used several of these with Seagate 400GB Hard Drives and have had no problems in extended operation. They stack nicely too. The interface chipset used is INTIO and works well, without causing any of the delayed write failure issues that many other cheaper products (from CompUSA and others) do. Firmware updates are available from INITIO also if any problems do arise.

I love this thing -- it works every time. My computers, both running Windows XP Pro, find it every time I turn it on. I used it to house a hard drive I removed from another computer, so I would have easy access to my files without having to transfer them.
However, I found it a little difficult to assemble after attaching the drive. There is a cable that runs the full length of the case and you have to make sure that the cable is in exactly the right place or the case won't close because of the cable sticking out.

I do video & audio, so I have had a bunch o' drives in a bunch o' enclosures; I have 2 AcomData boxes (this and a USB 2.Only) and never a hiccup of any kind. For contrast, I've also had drives in several generic cases (house brand from a downsizing chain...) - and EVERY ONE of the drives in those generic cases has *died*. Nothing special about any drive, or its age, or how its used.

MORAL: don't buy cheap generic crap in an effort to save money - the time and data I lost when virtually new drives became unmountable for no reason far outweigh the money I "saved"...to say nothing of the money I had to spend to recover. These AcomDatas are good (yes, I'm ordering another today!)

Works Sometimes, Lousy Technical Support.......2007-05-07

Was looking for a quiet, firewire HD enclosure. Acomdata's product looked like it fit the bill.

Pros - solid case (quiet without a fan), easy to set up, had it up and running in minutes.

Cons - would work for several days, then just stop. Initially, wouldn't work after reboots. Subsequently, it seemed more random. I wasn't able to find a good pattern.

Acomdata's web site states that they give free tech support for as long as you own the product, and promise an email response in 3 days. Wasn't sure how they could manage such an inclusive policy, but I soon found out. Tech support is entirely an illusion. 4 emails (over about 3 weeks, to tech support and customer service) all went unanswered. Never received a solution to problem, and I'm now looking for a more reliable solution to external storage.

I purchased this a few months ago. The space is excellent. The styling is fine. I have noticed that the hub/drive tends to get warm when the Mac mini was sitting on top of the Acomdata drive. The other negative that I have experienced is that when I moved the hub so it was on top, then the Airport wireless connection seemed to be somewhat impeded. I love having the extra ports, 4 USB and 2 Firewire. As another reviewer mentioned, a good backup software is important.

I've used this for a while now and I love the fact that it is styled to match my Mac Mini. I had high hopes for the backup software but it didn't work for me. I use a freeware backup program now instead. When it runs full speed it makes just a little bit of noise and when it isn't in use it makes no noise and stays cool. I recommend it, but get yourself a decent backup software.

I do a lot of photo and video editing on my mac mini. I needed more space to store info. The Mini-Pal was perfect. I connected it to my mac mini via firewire and it works great. It even came with a special smaller firewere cable to connect straight from the mini-pal to the mac mini, so I dont have extra cable hanging around. The other plus is that all the ports are in the back of the unit. I know that other units have the ports on both sides and that would not work for me. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of this product!

Outstanding backup/storage solution!.......2007-09-05

This is a beautifully designed piece of equipment. It's small, fast, quiet, and has a well-engineered feel about it. Also, the User Manual that comes with it is one of the best I've seen in some time. (Make sure you read it - it's all in there!) I'd bought a "Maxtor One-Touch III" the week before I bought the Acomdata drive and the Maxtor turned out to be a total, frustrating disaster. The software that came with the Maxtor was a nightmare and Maxtor tech suppt (actually Seagate, now that Maxtor is owned by Seagate) was unable to ever get me up and running. Close to 4 hrs and 5 tech suppt calls later I returned the Maxtor for a refund.

After doing some online research I decided to give Acomdata a try, having never really heard of them. Acomdata tech suppt, unlike Maxtor's, was absolutely wonderful...courteous and very skilled (located in CA). I had a minor initial problem with re-formatting the Acomdata Hybridrive with the NTFS file system, which is recommended if you plan to use the drive only on Windows XP or 2000. A call to tech suppt confirmed that you can sometimes get an error msg when trying to do this; tech suppt easily walked me through the steps to successfully re-format, and provided insight and clarification on some other minor questions I had. My tech suppt person also provided me his direct phone extension and email address for future use. Talk about a great tech suppt experience!

The supplied "Redemption" backup software is a breeze to use - I had my PC backed-up in a matter of minutes. The fact that it's powered by the USB connection is convenient. And the drive comes pre-loaded with a host of other useful software (Nomad Mobile Desktop) that I haven't even checked into yet. I highly recommend the Acomdata Hybridrive 2.5 - nice product and outstanding tech suppt.

I bought this product both to back up large amounts of data and to transfer large amounts of data by "sneaker net". I've been very happy with the disk for both these uses. (Incidentally, I also have an AcomData firewire external disk that I'm very happy with.)

I was looking for an external disk that would not need the hassle of external AC power. This is the one: It picks up its electrical power from its USB connection. If your computer can't quite manage to supply the current from a single USB port, then the USB cable (supplied) allows you to boost the current from a second available USB port.

It also comes with several applications that can be run basically off the disk itself. They look potentially useful, but I haven't needed them yet. They include Redemption (for back-up), OpenOffice and Skype (which are also available elsewhere, of course).

It comes with password security. But, despite the Amazon ad, it does not come with sunglasses.

And one day I'll figure out what "hybrid" means! (;>))

Great storage device.......2007-03-07

If you are looking for a portable back-up drive with substantial storage capacity, this is a good option to consider. It is quite expensive, but still, this is a nice gadget, a 5-star device. It is the size of an iPod and does not require an external power supply - very convenient. I'm not quite sure why they call it a hybrid, but maybe because it works not only on USB2 but also on the old USB1 (obviously, much more slowly). I backed up my photos (thousands) from my home computer, documents at work including large email archive files, plus loaded music files to play in the office, and everything worked out just fine. Having gone through a hard drive crash once, I should now be in a good shape to recover if/when it happens again! (if only I remember to back up again every now and then, not only this one time...) Acomdata is a new company for me, I had not even heard their name before. A friend has this device and showed it to me when he visited. I was impressed, this is a perfect solution for my storage needs too. You could use your iPod for the same purpose, but it would seriously eat into the limited space for the music files - my pod is full of music, I'm waiting for the 100 GB++ version and for sure not putting my documents there to replace music.

This sweet little external hard drive will meets the requirements of anyone in need of modest back-up. Most folks with a newer computer will have a lonely IEEE 1394a port just looking for an application, all the while not tying up a USB port. The FireWire 400 connection provides for a fairly brisk 400Mbps interface along with a swift 7200 RPM disk rotation.

Running Win XP-Pro, I personally have never seen a hot swappable device "mount" itself as quickly as this unit; faster than a small thumb drive. As most users are most likely using WIN 2000 or XP and the unit comes file formatted in FAT32, you will want to reformat the drive to NTFS. This took about ~40 minutes and I was ready to go!

This handsome Zinc alloy unit comes with a small power supply adapter, a standard 6-pin FireWire cable and a dandy matching Zinc alloy base for minimal vertical placement. Additionally with appropriate cables this unit will connect to 4-wire 1394a and 9-wire 1394b connections. The only cons are the One Year Warrenty and the alternating blue/red, read/write LED; it is VERY bright! Otherwise an exceptional peripheral!
