Amazon.com Product Description
As easily as making a regular telephone call, the Packet8 DV326 VideoPhone delivers high-quality full-motion video and clear, delay-free audio. The DV326 can be used on any broadband cable or DSL IP-based connection with Ethernet, such as LANs, WANs, and the public Internet. Designed for use with a Packet8 VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) service plan, the VideoPhone will enhance your phone calls with the addition of video, while saving you money on your phone bill.
|
|
The VideoPhone routes all calls over the Internet, allowing you to call standard phones, cell phones, and other Packet8 phones with equal ease. |
The DV326 VideoPhone throttles through connection speeds from 84 Kbps to 684 Kbps and can deliver 30 fps quality video at 256 Kbps connection speeds and higher. It can also be used to make or receive normal audio calls from any cell or traditional phone. Easy to set up and use, the VideoPhone has everything you need to make a video call. There is no need for an external TV, monitor, keyboard, microphone, or speakers. The high-quality CCD camera delivers crisp, colorful images, while the 30-frames-per-second video quality and up to 352 x 288 resolution provide near TV quality video. The LCD screen tilts from 23 to 90 degrees to give you the best viewing angle, while features such as picture-in-picture, privacy mode, and freeze frame provide control over the video feed.
|
|
Ports for broadband and video/audio input and output are within easy reach. |
With audio/video-in and -out ports, you can attach peripherals such as a plasma screen, camcorder, or projector. Echo-cancellation and no-delay technology help deliver high-quality audio signals. A 100-number phone directory helps you to keep track of all your important numbers, while 10-number speed dial provides quick access to the most important entries.
Working together, Packet8's VoIP technology and the DV326 VideoPhone allow you to enjoy all the features that you have come to expect from traditional phones, such as call waiting, caller ID, speakerphone, personalized voice mail, and three-way conferencing, while also taking advantage of features made possible only by utilizing the latest in Internet technology. Anyone with broadband (high-speed) Internet access can make unlimited calls within the U.S. and Canada for one low monthly rate. You also get unlimited worldwide calling to other Packet8 subscribers at no extra charge.
With Packet8 service, you can manage your account online, forward voice mail to your e-mail as an attachment, and even take your home area code with you when you travel, so your home or office can reach you without paying long-distance rates. All you need to get started is the VideoPhone, an existing high-speed Internet DSL or cable connection, and a home router or gateway with an open Ethernet port. Whether in the office or at home, the Packet8 VideoPhone delivers face-to-face communication anywhere in the world. It comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:
Awful customer service.......2007-06-25
Customer service is atrocious. Numerous e-mails with a simple billing question went unanswered and, like a previous poster I was billed for service for several months after I had ported my number to another provider, notwithstanding that there was no longer a phone number assigned to my Packet8 account.
Prior to transferring service I had numerous technical problems (which was why I dropped service) - STAY AWAY!!!
Packet8 Videophone is years ahead of Vonage and other telecom.......2007-05-05
Forget the complaints. The customer service has been excellent for the 2+ years that I've had service. Video and audio quality have been great as well.
I carry the phone in a small case when I travel, just plug it into an ethernet port and it self-configures. In 30 seconds or so I'm up and running. I use it to make hundreds of calls (including my ex-wife in Canada) at no extra cost. Packet8 owns the technology and they charge less. Sure they should advertise, but if they did they'd have to charge what Vonage charges.
Keep in touch and SEE your family members, old friends...this is a no brainer.
Great Video Phone.......2006-05-25
I have had this phone for 2 months now. Buying from Amazon was a $50 less expensive than buying from Packet8. Set-up and registration was no problem. Audio quality is exccellent-equivalent to my landline. Video quality is generally excellent. At times it slows due to my wife's basic DSL connection. I communicate daily with my wife in Mexico City, Mexico who has another DV326. Neither of us has had any problems. Our savings utilizing VOIP will be considerable-$75-$100 per month.
Bad Customer Service.......2006-05-13
Beware, while the equipment works alright, the customer service is atrocious. I had packet8 service for several months and decided to go back to a standard landline for quality and bundling issues. I ported my number, and called the cancel my packet8 service. I believed everything was taken care of. Packet8 billed me for 5 subsequent months after the number was ported out, and even after escalating the issue to their supervisors, they refuse to give me credit for the service fees even though there was no number on the account on which to use the service.
If you choose to purchase this product, you are warned, you are dealing with an unscrupulous company that is so happy with their terms and conditions that they cannot use reasoning to make a decision.
VOIP Basics.......2006-01-01
I have had Packet8 for over a year now and have had the same problems that you would expect from any established telco. Meaning that I have been without service for a half hour, once the entire year. A call to their tech support was answered immediately and I was informed that they were updating some routes. Problem was fixed 30 mins later. This is our primary telephone service, and I have our box wired into the whole house so all of the lines are live. Packet8 uses the least amount of bandwidth of any VOIP carrier and the quality is better than traditional POTS. Here is what it all comes down to folks with all of the VOIP carriers. If you have a bad broadband connection, then you will have a bad VOIP experience. If you have a bad experience with Packet8, which again uses the LEAST amount of bandwidth, then you will have more problems with any of the other VOIP providers. The people who complain about the VOIP all complain about voice quality issues which has nothing to do with the VOIP carrier and everything to do with the 50 splitters you installed on the cable line that your dog regularly chews. So make sure you have a excellent broadband connection before you think of trying any VOIP service. Then get Packet8.

Product Description
Linksys (WRT54GP2A-AT) The Linksys Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports, AT&T
Amazon.com Product Description
The Linksys Wireless-G broadband router combines the flexibility of a home network with the simplicity of good design. You can directly connect up to four PCs (or daisy-chain as many hubs as you like) and allow them all to share a DSL connection or cable modem. The built-in Ethernet ports support up to four devices, while the wireless access point handles both Wireless-G and Wireless-B accessories; secure encryption protects your privacy. These functions are all set up through a browser-based Web utility that will have you up and running quickly.
Easy Hardware Connections
|
|
Four Ethernet ports and two telephone jacks are readily accessible. |
The unit also features two standard phone jacks that connect any ordinary telephone or fax to AT&T CallVantage
sm Service (requires broadband via DSL or cable modem). Each jack operates independently and can support two different phone numbers (where available; requires service activation).
AT&T CallVantage Service is a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone service that utilizes the latest in Internet technology to deliver features that are beyond the means of traditional phone companies. With VoIP, calls are transmitted over the Internet, allowing you to communicate nationwide for a single monthly fee. You pay additional charges only for international calls, which are billed at competitive prices. (AT&T CallVantage service treats calls to Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada as domestic calls.)
In addition to standard features you expect from your traditional phone company, such as caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, and call forwarding, AT&T CallVantage Service provides a number of extras made possible only through use of Internet protocol technology. You can have voice mail forwarded to your e-mail inbox as an attachment and then forward that attachment to relevant third parties. You can take your home area code with you when you travel, so your family or work can reach you without paying long-distance rates. And, with an elaborate variation of call forwarding known as "Locate Me," you can maintain a list of places you'll be visiting: When you're out and about, the service will ring each place in sequence (or all at once) until it finds you.
Sign up for AT&T CallVantage Service and you're automatically given a secure, private, Personal Call Manager Web site. With it, you have complete control of all your features. At a glance, you can check your voice mail or instantly change any of your settings. This truly sets AT&T CallVantage Service apart from any other home phone service.
Accessible either by phone or the Internet, the Phone Feature Manager supplies a phone directory that stores up to 250 numbers and logs every incoming and outgoing call for 60 days. A reverse lookup directory lets you access the name and address information of an incoming caller, while the Add to Phone Book feature lets you move any number from your call log to your phone book with the touch of a single button. Display and Dial lets you easily call any number selected from either your call log or phone book, and you can create up to nine speed dial entries for your most frequently dialed numbers. With all the possibilities that AT&T CallVantage Service offers, you can organize your communications like never before.
What's in the Box
One AT&T-certified Linksys wireless router, Ethernet connector cable, installation guide, and service subscription instructions
Note: This device may not work with VoIP services other than AT&T CallVantage. To activate your account after buying this router, visit the Web address listed in the accompanying instructions. See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies. |
Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.
What Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.
Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.
For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

Customer Reviews:
I hate att dsl internet.......2007-09-23
Every time I come to my computer, I have no connection. I called att and they said it was my computer, but when I talked to other people in my area, they said they had the same problem. I would not recommend att internet. It's awful. I would not recommend comcast, either. Comcast workers are mean and nasty. If anyone knows of a good reliable internet, please let me know.
Linksys Wireless-G VOIP for AT&T CallVantage.......2007-07-15
Received the product on time. Fairly easy plug and play, however when I connected with AT&T CallVantage for the initial setup of the account the AT&T system thought I had the standard telephone adaptor and tried to download the wrong data. I called the AT&T help line and the service tech was great and easily corrected the problem. I have been very happy with both the router and the AT&T CallVantage service.
Be VERY afraid.......2007-04-19
There is nothing to this device that would even earn it one star, but no stars is not an option.
I have now had four of these - provided by AT&T - over the past 15 months. The sad fact is that they just don't work and AT&T has stopped supporting this unit. The first problem seems to have been the faulty power supply that early units were shipped with. Later problems are the firmware or some such which At&T always seems to be fiddling with remotely. My fourth unit lasted less than 90 days.
When it is working, this is a standard Linksys wireless router, a generally dependable device, coupled with a phone-thing that provides miserable sound quality.
The good news is that you can't get these anymore. The even better news would be if you (unlike me) were smart enough to avoid AT&T Callvantage together. But that's a whole different story . . .
AT&T CallVantage Wireless - G VoIP Router with 2 Phone Ports WRT54GP 2A-AT.......2006-11-05
Good product, working fine. A little trouble "unlocking" the product to work with other VoIP provided (other then ATT), but it worked.
Excellent Router...Up and running in less than 30 Minutes.......2006-10-07
Purchased this product seperatly from my ATT callvantage service. I installed a wireless card and then the wireless router. The whole process took less than 30min and the internet was up and running. Had slight problem with phone because ATT had set up and shipped their TA adapater(which i did not want) but this was resolved with a ten minute phone call to ATT's 24 hour tech support. All in all this has been a very stable product and I have had no problems with the phone or internet since installing it a month ago. Phone calls are crystal clear and my internet speeds are excellent.

Product Description
Packet8 BPG510, a new broadband phone adapter eliminates the need for a separate router in a subscriber's home network. The BPG510 is equipped with two Ethernet ports (LAN and WAN) and one RJ-11 phone port for connecting a standard analog telephone. The built-in router prioritizes voice packets over data and manages available bandwidth. The LAN Ethernet port can be used to connect a PC or other networked device without adding any additional equipment. The BPG510 adapter is available for $39.99, but after you redeem a Packet8 $40 mail-in rebate coupon offer, the net cost is FREE if you are a new Packet8 subsciber.
Packet8 is one of the top providers of internet phone service. Using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology, Packet8 allows you to use your broadband internet connection to provide you with a full-featured telephone line! The quality is as good as or better than traditional phone providers, but much more advanced thanks to all the new features and technology that are included. And most importantly, it's much less expensive than old-fashioned phone providers.
Packet8 is an affordable and easy-to-use broadband telephone and videophone service. Designed with both residential and business customers in mind, Packet8 allows anyone with broadband (high-speed) Internet access to use their regular phone to make UNLIMITED calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada for as little as $19.99 per month. Packet8 subscribers with videophones can make video calls for as little as $19.99 per month. All Packet8 subscribers get world wide UNLIMITED calling to other Packet8 subscribers at no extra charge. Calls to non-Packet8 international numbers (outside the U.S. and Canada) are charged at a very low per minute rate.
Customer Reviews:
Vastly better than my old provider.......2007-08-14
Before getting VOIP make sure your broadband connection is good enough to support quality calls. There are websites that do this.
With my last VOIP provider, calls would sometimes get choppy if I browsed the internet during the call. I'm using Packet8 with a cordless phone and the calls are as clear as with a regular landline and I can browse the internet at the same time. I've plugged in a corded phone to verify the call sounds like a regular line. Haven't had any service outages so far so no interaction with customer service.
It took about 5 working days to port my number from my old provider. With an annual unlimited plan, it works out to $16.86 per month for me including the tax. There's a cheaper plan with a 500 minute outgoing allowance (unlimited incoming) that I may switch to. I've tried faxing on the line and it works just fine.
The unit itself requires just plugging everything in. You can adjust settings if necessary, but with most network connections you just plug it in and activate the account online. It's small, but I'd prefer if it were box shaped and smaller. But that's so that I could take it with me if I had to travel for an extended period. It's out of site stuck under my desk normally.
Awful.......2007-07-18
I used Packet8 when it first came out in 2005. Because the quality of the audio is very important to me, I was very disappointed with Packet8's performance. The voice quality sounds noticeably computerized. I also use Vonage, which charges more per month, but has audio quality which matches a traditional telephone line. Vonage also has the ability to reduce the sound quality if you want to reduce the bandwidth required, while Packet8 offers no option to increase the sound quality.
I also found that Packet8's support was terrible. I wanted to find out if the sound quality I was experiencing was the result of a defect or just a characteristic of the service. So, I called Packet8's "24-hour" support line. Although I placed my call at 1:30 a.m. and several times later in the morning and the following afternoon, I always reached an answering service who could do nothing other than take a message and promise a return call. The return call never came. In my view, a 24-hour answering service does not qualify as "24-hour" support, even if the calls had been returned.
I also sent several e-mails complaining about the sound quality, and the only response that I got asked me to send another e-mail if I wanted support. I did, but it was never returned.
I finally called Packet8's main number and asked to speak to a manager. The switchboard operator transferred me to a line that nobody answered. When I called back, she transferred me to a voicemail. When I called back again, she transferred me to a very rude person who insisted upon finding all of my e-mails before he would help me. When I suggested that he help me first, and find the e-mails later, he hung up on me.
I called again and the operator transferred me to the director of technical support's voicemail, where I left a message promising to cancel my service if I didn't get a return call. Five minutes later, I got a call from a senior technical support representative who said that he was asked to call me by the director of technical support. He called me on my regular phone line from a Packet8 line in their headquarters. The call had the same mechanized quality that my Packet8 line had, which led me to conclude the audio problems are normal.
All that said, if you won't need support, and you don't mind the digitized sound quality of Packet8, you can't beat the price. If you want better quality, Vonage [...] offers better quality at a higher price.
Very, very poor service. Much better choices out there........2007-05-04
Packet8, on the surface, appears to be a good choice for VoIP. WRONG! When I actually experienced their "service" I found first impressions can be deceiving. At first it was OK, but after a few months the voice quality became consistently unusable - voices were badly distorted and difficult to understand. Calls were intermittently dropped.
Calls to technical support resulted in immediate and repeated blame placed on everything outside their own company. I received pages of instructions telling me to change all the cords, change my router configuration, change my phone, change my network configuration, run network tests and on and on. They blamed available bandwidth on my cable line without testing it, told me that having another VoIP service provider on the same network connection would cause a problem because the IP addresses would be "confused." The one thing they did seem good at was finding someone else to blame. They were NOT good at resolving a problem that, in the end, was clearly their own.
I've moved to another provider and have found that Packet8 continued to cause problems because I was forwarding calls from Packet8 to the new provider. Packet8 simply drops all forwarded calls after 16 minutes, something they don't disclose anywhere I've found. Outside the Packet8 caused problems, the new service provider (VoipYourLife) works great.
Packet8 makes it very easy to sign up. They never mention a cancellation fee if you sign up over the phone and bury notice of the fee in a multi-page service agreement online. Discussions with their management made it clear that they didn't care if their service worked or not, they were going to charge their customers to cancel.
Stay away from this one.
BAD BAD BAD.......2007-03-26
I have been using Packet8 just about a year now, things had been going ok with the exception of the crackly static at times, however, over the last two months I would go significant times with absolutely NO service. To top it off even there website went down! Now I want out and they want me to pay 60 bucks to drop there service (or lack there that of). I have opened many "cases" with them and they keep closing them with the tag "closed/resolved". So even if I wanted to drop and pay the $60 I cant because the dummies at there customer service are not emailing me a notification. At this point I am assuming that I am no longer getting service from them and that if I am billed I will refute the charges and report them to the BBB.
BUYER BEWARE! Poor service and AWFUL customer service, the worst I have ever had for anything.
Works Great! Good Value........2007-02-07
Seems everybody submits reviews only when they have problems. I've been nothing but pleased so far with Packet8 for my home phone service. $25(taxes and fees included.) per month for unlimited long distance sure beats $75 per month charged by Verizon. I'll rate a couple of areas.
Call(line) quality - It's good. I won't kid you, it's not as good as a land line but theres nothing that is noticeable or that bothers me during conversation.
Customer Service - I had an issue when trying to activate. I was worried about how Packet8's customer service would respond. I was pleasantly surprised when I have a live human being on the line within one minute and had my problem solved within 5 minutes. No problems in customer service so far.
Cost - $19.95 per month for unlimited US long distance. I can't beat that.
The only negative I know is that during a power outage I have no phone service. But that would be the case with any VoIP solution. Great thing about Packet8 is that I can forward my calls to my mobile when there's an internet outage.

Customer Reviews:
DO NOT SIGN UP WITH PACKET 8.......2007-09-24
I have been with Vonage for 2 years and Sun Rocket for 9 months. Recently I signed up with Packet 8. There website is pretty bad. If you change any features eg call forwarding or caller ID, nothing happens. Email notification does not carry voice mail. Some of the numbers can not be dialed with Packet 8. If you complain there is no response or no action. I am surprised that they are still in business.
Excellent .......2007-07-04
I was surprised by some of the negative feedback. I've been using Packet 8 since Nov 06 and it has been nothing short of excellent. It was very easy to hook up and has worked flawlessly. The sound quality is great. It's very cheap at $20 / month. I liked it so much I don't have a land line anymore.
You can fax...and other info.......2007-01-06
I heard all these horror stories on faxing over VOIP so I never tried it. Well to my amazement Packet 8 sent so far 2 for 2 faxes....1st time 100% ok. Now these are SENT faxes. I'm not concerned with receiving faxes as there are other alternatives that are even better. For example one can get a dedicated free incoming fax from EFAX which deposits it into your e-mail. In my opinion this is much better anyway as now a permanent record exists of the original.
The other advantage of Packet 8 over VOnage is no annoying clicks of 1 sec drops. I have 2 friends who have Vonage and each time I talk to them there is an annoying drop-out of about 1 to 2 secs evey say 2 minutes. Not so with Packet 8.
Others have reported dropped calls with Packet 8. Only occasionlly do I experience this...but its only after say a 3 hour call. Most time no sweat. I use the 3 way calling a lot too.
Packet 8 line is ALWAYS UP. Its more reliable than my cell phone. As long as the cable is up so is Packet 8. In fact it has become the defacto way to tell if I have data service. If I got PAcket 8 dial tone its up.
Its easy to set up. Plug in an eternet connection. Plug in the phone connection. Answer the e-mail you get. BINGO...You got dial tone! Easier than a land line setup. The phone companies should be running real scared.
THe only downfall of Packet 8 is the box will not support multiple extentions. So you can't have two phones plugged into same box. THis was stupid of PAcket 8. But the work around is easy: Go to Sams Hohouse CLub and get a cordless 4 wireless phone...you know...the ones with 4 handsets. Now you got it covered. Works great.
Good service, great price........2006-12-15
I have been a Packet8 subscriber for over three years. Packet8 provides terrific value, and I never had any problems that their technical support staff wasn't willing and able to quickly address.
Note that many complaints with VoIP providers--and Packet8 is no exception--are due to the the customer's ISP, broadband speed, etc.
Packet8 just started hitting customers with a lot of extra fees, taxes, etc., bringing that nice $20 monthly plan up to almost $30.
Disclosure: Just this month switched to Sunrocket for their annual plan at $199 (which Packet8 matches), but more so to get a free hardware upgrade. (Sunrocket offers a phone adapter with built-in router.)
Feedback on the line and static.......2006-01-23
I've used this service for almost 8 months now. A lot of times, there's a feedback on the line (I can hear my own voice). My friends and family also tell me that they can hear static on the line when they're talking to me - at first I dismissed it as their phones but given enough complaints and that when I'm on my cell phone that doesn't happen I'm convinced it's the service.
I also think they deserve a low score because when compared to their competitors they don't have the same number of features even though they cost about the same.
