Would be great except for one bug.......2007-08-18

The device stops supplying power after 20 minutes unless you press the button on the unit. So, if you need to power a gadget or recharge something for longer than 20 minutes, you need to repeatedly press the wake up button on the unit. Other than that, it is a very nice device.

This device is fantastic. Just as it's description says it can charge and power any mobile device that can use USB as a power source. I've used it with my iPod, PSP, Nintendo DS, and even my GPS and it works beautifully.

Before I got it, I was expecting something larger and heavier that didn't hold it's charge as well as this does. I should have known better. All of the APC products that I use at home and at work are great and this is no exception to that rule. It easily fits into a pants pocket or a small bag that you might use to carry your other devices.

What has impressed me the most is how well it can hold it's charge when it's not in use. Other portable batteries I have tried usually get pretty drained rather quickly when sitting on a shelf or being carried around. I've gone weeks without using this and it still had a full charge when I needed it. That was a life saver. We were lost in another state and the battery in my GPS was almost dead. The UPB10 got us home with power to spare.

I haven't been able to test how much time it can add to my various devices, because it lasts longer than I have needed it so far. On a weekend it looks like I got an additional four hours on the PSP. I could have gone longer, but I ran out of time to use it. That was while using it when watching a movie on the memory stick and playing a game from a UMD disc. I was also using my GRADO headphones at a good volume level.

I have noticed that some people have commented that the PSP can't be charged from a USB cable. This is only true if you don't have the right kind of cable. There are several manufacturers that make a USB cable with an extra wire that plugs into the power port on a PSP. MadCatz even makes a retractable one that I use because it makes everything even more portable. There is also a similar cable for the Nintendo DS, which otherwise couldn't be powered by USB.

The UPB10 may seem a bit pricey at first, but with it's versatility and performance, to me it was worth every penny.

Not for PSP.......2007-03-21

The UPB10 information says that it will charge portable gaming systems and some of the advertisements show what looks like the outline of a Playstation Portable (PSP). However, the PSP does not charge via its mini USB port and APC has not released a cable that will connect to the 5 volt DC input to the PSP (nor do they have an estimated date of availability).

A bit of deceptive advertising in my opinion.

Airline power converter.......2007-07-05

Does everything it is supposed to do. The converter box is a bit on the big side, but it's great to have the extra power on long flights. Warning: although the unit is rated at 150 watts, enough to power even 17" laptops, some airlines only provide 65 to 75 watts of power to their power plug. No problem for MP3 players, but power hungry laptops will not get recharged with this, but it will definitely prolong the use.

I used it on my plane ride to europe, charged my laptop great as well as my iPod, and would have charged my cell is it had died too! The only downside (and this has to do more from the plane's end the this product) but I could not use the computer or iPod while it was charging, it seemed to take TOO much power, but just the fact on a 9 hour plane ride, I could chrge my laptop during lunch and get right back to work, I was very happy!!

Also works great in the car and in here, you can use the computer WHILE chargeing. We take long car rides, so this really helps (also when waiting to pick the kids p from school!!)

have not tried it on a boat, but I am sure it works great!

I love this charger, especially since it is not a laptop only, I can plug anything in it, that needs power! (well within reason of course, and within the product guidlines, but anything portable!)

I have traveled with this kit for over a year in Europe and it was and is a great find. This simply replaces your power cord on most (not all) laptop power supplies (the 110-240v AC adapters with a clover leaf connector) with one with removable power plug tips that work throughhout Europe, North America, most of Asia...

This is the only travel adapter I bring with me when I travel as I then charge my phone from my laptop USB port and I travel light and charged.

The only thing that would change to make this product better would be to add more plug adapters (for S. America, etc...) and a provide a locking mechanism on the power plug adapter as it is sometimes is difficult to unplug because the adapter becomes unplugged from the cord and remains connected to the wall plug. You can just grab the cord and pull to unplug it from the wall, you must grab the plug itself to pull the plug from the wall.

Funny, but not "ha-ha" funny.......2007-05-15

Funny -- of all of the plugs that come with this set, none of them fit the standard outlet in some parts of South America. They had the plug that they used for plugging in ovens and dryers down there, but not the one that you would use in your hotel room without buying an additional adapter.
I can't speak to the usefulness of all of the other attachments, but the pouch took up more space than I would have preferred given that I was trying to pack a laptop and some carry-on items into the same bag.
An easier and cheaper solution is to buy a cord in the country where you are traveling, or stop at a local hardware store to modify your current cord at a cost of $5 or less.

The listing here is pretty poor at describing this kit. So let me do so...

This kit is basically a set of plug adaptors for your laptop power "brick". It comes with a set of four different style plugs, for different countries, that connect to a cable that terminates in a sort-of triangular three hole plug that is pretty much the standard connector for *most* (but not all) modern laptop powerbricks (check your powerbrick before buying, obviously). That is to say, that this three hole (male) plug inserts into a three hole (female) plug insert on your powerbrick.

This kit does not do any sort of voltage transition. It is expected that your powerbrick does any voltage converstions required (and most of them are universal/international, so that's a reasonable assumption).

The four plug types included are:

1) US / Japan
2) UK ("British Standard")
3) Australia
4) France

These plugs can be used in certain other countries, as well, but there are countries where none of the included plugs will work. Check your requirements before buying.

I will note that these are high quality plugs--better made and providing a better socket connection than the typical "all-in-one" set that you find in the stores, and certainly making a better connection than those cockamamie one-adapter-that-works-in-every-socket deals that they sell.

Provided the limitations of this kit are compatible with your requirements, I'd say this is a high quality and recommendable kit and I would recommend it over a more general purpose kit in that case.

For anyone needing extra time from their current battery.......2007-02-17

The APC model number is UPB70, so that is how I will refer to it here.

The UPB70 is thin and lightweight, about the size and heft of a National Geographic magazine. It is covered in a very pleasant-feeling non-skid coating, which is beneficial since the preferred usage is to sit your notebook on it. The back is slightly higher than the front, which helps with the typing angle.

Under my ultraportable 10.6" Sony Vaio TR1, the computer is smaller than the battery, so the battery sticks out about 1 inch on all sides. This is not a problem; the battery becomes like a carrying tray.

Under my 15.4" standard size Gateway MX6453, the computer is larger than the battery by about 1" on each side. This makes it awkward if you go to pick up the notebook/UPB70 system as one unit. It is best to use two hands.

This leads to one of my minor nitpicks with the system. It is unwieldly and a bit unsafe to move the system when a larger notebook is on top of the battery. The solution, though is simple: Use a couple of strips of Velcro! This way, you can pick up the notebook/battery system as one unit. Attach so the hard bristly side is on the UPB70 and the soft fuzzy side is on the underside of your notebook. The soft Velcro will be a non-scratch "foot" for your computer, when you are not using the UPB70 battery underneath.

The only other minor nitpick is that the power cable from the UPB70 to the notebook is about 18" too long (at least, when the notebook is right on top of the UPB70). But a cable tie will tame the cable so it is out of the way.

The UPB70 outputs 4 voltages: 15, 16, 19 and 20 volts. The included compatibility chart lists which one to use with your notebook. Note that if you change the voltage selection switch, you must press the round silver Status button on the UPB70 so the unit is reset for the new voltage.

The UPB70 comes with 8 different tip adapter sets. This is a definite plus since this allows you to fit it to many different notebooks. (Some other power systems come with only one tip set, so you would have to buy additional sets at around $10 each. This is both expensive and inconvenient if you have more than one notebook in the house or office.)

Note that the UPB70 does NOT come with its own charger. You use the AC power supply that came with your notebook to charge the UPB70. (This is one reason for having the 8 tip sets. You select the correct type of tip that allows your power supply to plug into the UPB70.)

Helpful hint: If you use more than one notebook, make a label for the underside of the UPB70 that lists each notebook's name, voltage, and tip adapter set. Mine reads "Gateway 19v B/b, SonyTR 16v E/e". This way you don't have to travel with the compatibility chart; just look at the label.

You can keep the UPB70 attached to your notebook at all times if you want. Plugging in your power supply to the UPB70 will "pass-through" power to the notebook.

Indicator lights show the charge status in 4 increments (25-50-75-100%); this is very useful.

There is a handy USB connector so you can charge or run devices which need standard 5-volt USB power.

As for runtime, this can vary widely. It depends on your notebook's power draw. If you have an ultraportable that's designed for long battery life, the UPB70 could add up to 6 additional hours. But if you have a standard 15.4" business computer doing office-type work, the extra time could be 2-3 hours. A very rough guide for most people (those whose notebooks did not come with hulking-large 12-cell extended life battery packs!) is "whatever battery time you are getting now, double it."

If you need even more time, APC makes a 90 watt-hour version

In summary, I would highly recommend this product. It is especially useful if you own a number of notebooks, some of which are so old that their batteries don't hold a charge for very long. The UPB70 will give them "new life", and having all the tips makes it easy to switch between notebooks (just don't lose the tips!).

Extra Laptop Battery For The Pragmatic.......2006-12-06

I had originally bought this to bring to Uganda, which is currently facing a power crisis. Usually, there will be a day with power--with sudden outages interspersed throughout--and the subsequent day will be without power. After a year of living like this, my laptop battery (for a Lenovo R40) conked out and I was in dire need of a replacement.

Instead of paying $150 to buy a new laptop-specific battery, I bought this universal battery--in the event that my laptop was stolen, I could use the battery for another laptop. Final price was $144, bought at Best Buy.

Battery does what it's supposed to. Lasts a bit longer than three hours, and can last a bit more if you lower the power settings on your laptop. Will last less when you are playing a DVD in your laptop. The weight is comparable to any laptop-specific battery.

Four stars are given instead of five because of its bulky design. If you don't place the battery underneath your laptop, its footprint is about as big as the laptop itself, and takes up that much more room on your desk.

A big plus are the LED indicator lights, telling you how much power you have left in the battery. Extremely helpful--especially since your computer can't gauge the power level for you.

If your laptop battery is of questionable quality--as Lenovo's are, then this is certainly recommended.

Great UPS for my needs.......2006-01-29

I went to the APC website (www.APC.com) and used their solutions wizard to select this power supply. I highly recommend that anyone considering buying an APC UPS go to their website and use the wizard to find exactly what specs they need. When you enter the specifics for your computer, and your required back-up time, it will give you three different options to chose from. The website will also give you specifics of how each power supply will handle your power requirements. Once you get all thee information come back here, and get your product of choice for about 10-15% off. How's that for a deal?

I now have a battery back up that runs my PC (AMD Athlon XP w/ 650W PS), external hard drive, 22 inch LCD monitor, my cable modem, and my wireless HUB for about 35 minutes after a power outage. Which gives me more than enough time to finish what I am doing and power down every thing if I need to. With my extended back-up time I can even work through a short power outage.

I really hope that this review was helpful. I didn't get into the specifics of why you should get a back-up power supply, because I would assume that if you are reading this review, you already know the advantages.
