5 out of 5 stars So innovative and cool!!.......2007-09-26

This product is really great, no doubt apple is hitting a big one this time, this ipod nano is so portable, so small, its bright, great resolution, and the sound quality is great too. Id recommend this product to anyone that HAS to take his music everywhere, like me.
Great stuff

2 out of 5 stars A DOWNGRADE from previous Nano.......2007-09-23

Instead of making nano smaller or adding a screen to shuffle, Apple decided to add video to the new nano. I tried the new iPod nano in an Apple store, and was very disappointed. The screen is so small that I can't helping wondering who would really watch video on the tiny screen to torture themselves???

If you want to watch video on the move, get a touch, which is at least bearably small. Otherwise, before the last gen nano runs out of inventory, get one NOW!

1 out of 5 stars Burned by Apple.......2007-09-23

I have learned my lesson. Last month I purchased a 4G Ipod Nano for $179. This was the 2nd generation with no video. Now a new version is out that is $149 and has video. I don't think I will buy Apple products again. I'm tired of getting burned and amazed that Apple does not offer any sort of help in situations like this.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT new NANO.......2007-09-23

Great Nano even better u can finally download movies on to it, and its so nice and compact

5 out of 5 stars A major upgrade and well worth it!.......2007-09-22

I knew that I was going to upgrade my old nano sooner or later and decided to get this on the first day that my local store carried it. I am very impressed with the improvements. I really thought that the original nano was too perfect to improve but Apple has done it again. The screen is beautiful. I won't be watching any movies on it as I am not a movie viewer but the screen is great for the new coverflow feature where you can scoll through the album covers of everything on your nano. There are lots of new extras such as improved clocks, a stopwatch, better search (you can search by first letter now), etc. The extra 2 gig of memory is very welcome and holds all of the music that I have. Battery life seems to be a bit better than the old nano and it definitely recharges faster. Here's my tip to preserve the screen and back from scratches: get a piece of clear packing tape (the kind you seal boxes with) and carefully cover the screen and back (NOT the scroll wheel). If you do this correctly, there will be no air bubbles and your screen will never scratch. Much cheaper than any cover on the market. I am definitely happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Lovin' it.......2007-09-28

I've only previously owned a 4th gen 40GB iPod, so I can't comment on the 'downgrade' issues from the last generation iPods, but so far I am very, very happy with my new 80GB classic. Installation was a breeze. I already had iTunes set up with all my music, so all I had to do was load up iTunes and plug in the iPod, and automation took care of the rest. The iPod charged up in a few hours. That simple!

The 80GB classic is perfect for what I use it for: listening to my entire music collection from one convienent place. I've been listening to it for many many hours straight, and it's barely even touched the battery. The screen is nice and vibrant for looking at all the cover art, and the backlight auto shuts off to save on batteries when you aren't using it, especially useful when it's just sitting in your pocket or glovebox. The brushed aluminum looks very stylish and gives it a more solid feel. The clickwheel can be a little sluggish at times, but I've never found myself irritated by it.

All in all an excellent purchase. Extremely impressed by the battery life. I'm glad I waited a little longer to buy an iPod, as we now get 80GB of storage instead of 30GB for the same price.

1 out of 5 stars I'm sure I'd like it if not for the bugs in Itunes 7.x.......2007-09-27

Well, I've never bought an Ipod, having held off for years. With the lower price on the classics, I jumped in.
Boy am I sorry. I've had it a week, and can't do a thing with it. The itunes software is buggy and deleted all my songs (after getting them on their easily on an older version, which it made me update). Now,itunes tells me it can't write to my device and continually tells me to reset it (which does nothing). Look on apples support site and you see hundreds of people screeming in the forums about this problem, with no response from Apple anywhere... not even acceptance a problem exists and a 'we are working on it'.
These things are supposed to be easy to use... that is the main advantage of Ipod on itunes, right??? Well, I'm about ready to return this one. Buggy software and non responsive support is not the way to 'lead the industry'.

3 out of 5 stars iPod 5.5 vs iPod Classic.......2007-09-27

I have the iPod Video 5.5Gen while my friend recently bought this new iPod Classic 80gb. I have compared the two side by side and I must say that the new Classic sports only a couple of new features against its predecessor. The price is quite a bargain though. The menu navigation on the old 5.5G is a little bit faster than the Classic. I bet this is because of the slideshow running in the background while navigating through the menu. The menus are admittedly very sluggish on the Classic as compared to the 5.5G. Good points though are the "scratch-proof" surface, which I think is rather a compromise in looks for functionality. The coverflow concept is also nice but I just wished the hardware could keep up with refreshing the album art thumbnails while browsing. And don't forget to start downloading those album arts.

Back to the iPod 5.5G. Well, this device has entertained me during long drives and has made me sleep for the past several months. It definitely never failed to do its purpose. I learned to love iTunes to make playlists and organize my music. But don't hesitate to use third party software like floola when you need to backup your stuff.

The bottomline is: if you are not one of the early jumpers when a new device is introduced, this device is perfectly cool for you. Honestly, I would've still bought the 5.5G now even with the iPod classic around.

Be cautious though, since this is a hard drive device. But I bet you already know that.

5 out of 5 stars What's not to like?..........2007-09-27

All this complaining, i just don't get it. People need to just step back and think for a minute about how revolutionary this product is. You can carry your whole music library and all your photos around in your pocket and watch tv shows and movies to boot. For my buck, the ipod is still far and away the best option out there. The navigation system is so much better than anyone elses not to mention the sound quality, the itunes interface, or the secondary accessory market. the problem i guess is that they set the bar too high too many times. me personally, i couldn't care less about the ipod touch (who needs it?), i'm just giddy about 60gigs for $249....

3 out of 5 stars They break.......2007-09-26

I dont know if Im the only other person having this problem, There is so much space it is very cool looking and shows picture, never figured out the video stuff, oh and i also owned a 30g older one befor i bought this one, the problem is I run, alot but not like crazy, whatever i just work out, so they break. the running or olyptical makes them jiggle and break on my arm so I am forced to get a Nano, they are work out safe, at least thats what the gyu at the Max store said. SO annoyed I have to buy yet another one just over a year after i bought this one

Built to take full advantage of the large 3.5-inch display, the multi-touch interface lets you control everything using only your fingers. So you can glide through albums with Cover Flow, flick through photos and enlarge them with a pinch, or zoom in and out on a section of a web page. And iPod touch features a touchscreen QWERTY keyboard perfect for browsing the web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, entering calendar events, or adding new contacts.

    Ambient Light Sensor
The iPod touch display has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness to suit the ambient light in your surroundings. The result? A better experience for you and battery-saving efficiency for iPod touch.

    Accelerometer
An accelerometer detects when you rotate iPod touch from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display, so you immediately see the entire width of a web page, your music in Cover Flow, or a photo in its proper aspect ratio.

2 out of 5 stars sluggish UI but larger storage space.......2007-09-28

Today I had a chance to play with the new Nano, Classic and the iPhone. Being the techno geek, I have been keeping up to speed on the iPods and after going thru the various functions I have found out the following...

    - the iPod classic has a sluggish response UI compared to the previous iPods. Very disappointing. It was more difficult to scroll through the albums and songs compared to the previous iPods. But you have to give Apple credit for the amazing 160GB capacity.
    - the iPod Nano was as responsive as the previous ones. Very pleasing to the eye and very well designed. But I read about the video out issue where you need to buy a $50 cable to make use of the video-out feature. Is Apple trying to milk the customer up as much as possible before something comes up to take over the iPod market share?
    - As most of us knows, the iPhone will not work at ALL unless you activate it with the AT&T service (unless you hack it...which turned out to be troublesome after today's Apple software update). The problem with the Touch is that there will be no scheduler feature for the Touch and there are some talks of how the Touch suffers from a "darker" screen compared to the iPhone. I asked about this and the Apple person told me that they heard about the problem but was not sure whether or not Apple would refund/replace the Touch because this was all very "subjective."

How nice of them to screw us.

The iPod is a very very attractive mp3 player to buy, but it seems like it's starting it's descent into ho-hum land.

2 out of 5 stars When customers are viewed as sheep!! .......2007-09-26

Yes.....iPod created the wave with its beautiful mp3 player line. People loved it and placed complete trust in Apple. What ever comes out of Apple, must be the best and costs reasonably......The business strategy is to take people there before the corporations drop them down and make a helluva lot of money for lesser and lesser. I remember iPods used to come with chargers et. al. which has to be bought seperately now. Now with this jukebox what is called as a 'Classic', No TV out, poorer quality of audio. They brought in a newer and a cheaper chip that is not only a poorer performer but also a feature chopper!! Apple has disabled the TV out in an effort to sell another of their $50 product. AV cables work no more. Tell me something.....why will somebody watch a movie on a 2.5inch screen, unless they are waiting in a stinking airport? I also think their menu-ing system has slowed down a bit. Definitely they have been infected with Microsoft's monopolizing disease.

Here I am one of the first sheep to buy this product.....It is a shame. If you find a 30 or an 80 gb 5.5Gen iPod.....Simply buy it. Run for it since people are drying up this product from the market. I am sure this is an opportunity for other manufacturers to get ahead.

4 out of 5 stars Quality but certainly not perfection.......2007-09-25

I love my iPod, but I also understand it's not going to be for everyone. My primary reason for purchasing this product was to store lots of movies and music for travel. If you don't mind the tiny screen, it's great for a personalized flick on the airplane. And my entire music collection fits on the hard drive with a lifetime's growth that could still be added.

I've noticed people complaining about crashes, rebooting and the redesigned thumbwheel. I have no issues with these items. I have no issues with the music quality.

I do not like DRM or the fact that this iPod requires a special $50 cable to activate TV out features. That's a load, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me since I don't really plan on using mine for watching movies on a larger screen. For a man who can remember paying $400 for 4MB of RAM about a decade ago, I feel like I got a decent deal. I'm a fairly satisfied iPod owner.

This iPod will scratch up immediately. It does not come with a protective shell of any kind. I got mine laser etched with "ad vitam paramus" and I like scratches - they add personality like scars do.

1 out of 5 stars iPod classic has big problem with tv out function.......2007-09-24

The new iPod classic has a big problem for all users of the photo and video functions. You cannot display photos, videos or video podcasts on your TV screen, as you cannot change the TV out function on the iPod from OUT to ON. If you want to see your videos fromthe iPod on the TV screen, then do not buy the iPod classic until Apple has fixed this problem.

3 out of 5 stars Not Impressed! Apple could've done better.......2007-09-24

I have had mine for a week and I've noticed it is slower than the 60Gb and the 80GB models...I've owned all three. The only reason I upgraded to 160Gb iPod was the obvious extra capacity storage. My total digital content has been increasing exponentially with music, audiobooks, photos, movies, TV shows, podcasts and music videos. This 160 GB model is not really 160GB, in fact it is only 148GB when taken out of the box brand new? It seems sluggish when compared to the 60GB and 80GB 5th gene models.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS SO GREAT!!.......2007-09-23

I have to say that being my first Ipod I was just enthralled.
It's picture and video quality is terrific. Also my outlook and
    contacts will sync with it!!
A must for all tech lovers and more!!!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2007-09-21

My involvement with Ipods goes back to Generation 2. The Nano it replaced was quite satisfactory...but I need to upgrade my toys. IMHO this one was definately worth it. Thickness compared to it's predecessor is a push. It is far shorter, but wider. Fits perfectly in the hand. The screen is much larger, similiar operator interface, but new software that is an upgrade from the 7.4 used with the previous version. Very bright screen...vidid colors. Also shows an album cover (if applicable). All in all, I deem it quite an improvement. I believe battery life is longer also. Only downside (if you can call it that) was the VERY tight fit of the cable when disconnecting.
Some may enjoy the larger screen and download photos. I will not. My use of the Nano is exclusively music.
Bottom line - If you have enjoyed previous Ipods, you will love this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best Nano ever.......2007-09-20

This iPod Nano version is small in size. Light in weight. But it packs with full features. Given the capacity (8GB), it should be able to last you 2-3 years.

4 out of 5 stars Apple improves the Nano and delivers an enjoyable player.......2007-09-17

Apple's new nano is designed to improve upon the past models and add some functionality. The improved video, smaller thinner body and updated firmware are enough to make it stand out. The slighly lower price tag is also sure to help sell more units.

    The Looks

First the aesthetics. Some people will prefer the gen2 nano's longer body with the larger click wheel. Apple shortened the body in order to limit breaks due to the former generation flexing in people's pockets and bags. The longer nano was prone to bend (and sometimes break) when people put them in their pocket and sat down or moved around.

Another change motivated by durability is the metal face. The old clear composite face was a magnet for smudges and scratches. The new metal face holds up nicer. Be warned though; it does chip and scratch some more, so get a cover.

This unit is also thinner, meaning when after you put it in a cover it will still be thinner than most other players.

Apple does lose some points for the smaller click-wheel being awkward. It's a trade-off.

    The Sound

Sound quality is not significantly improved from previous models. The slight improvements touted in Apple's marketing are exagerated. However, let's be fair to Apple here. They are not alone when it comes to high cost MP3 players with only moderate fidelity sound.

Almost no MP3 players are actually designed for audiophiles / musicians / sound engineers; i.e., the people who could tell the difference between good sound and great sound.

Keep in mind also that MP3 is a compression technology that does experience quality loss. Particularly, with a lower bitrate your MP3 files will lose more and more of the sound integrity from the original recording. Combine that with the fact many people rip from CDs that are not digitally mastered, and you would get inferior sound quality with any device.

    Features

Other than the changes in the body design, not many new features are noteworthy with this device.

There are some changes in the components and software that do make the screen brighter and allow you to do more things, including watch videos and play games. Some complain there isn't enough memory for video. But you can still get enough on here for a cross-country flight. It's a nice extra even if these nanos don't have tremendous memory.

The flash memory in this device could have been a higher speed. However, the main advantages of the flash player are still here: less risk of hardware failure associated with a hard disk drive player (better for running or working out).

The device does seem to have a slighly shorter battery life than advertised. Perhaps there is a trade-off with the shorter form factor. Few users will notice this as they are still likely to get a day's worth of use from a full charge.

Apple's software is still a weakness with very limited direct control over your device library and few file options. However, most users have limited needs and will not notice. Apple hits the minimum compatibility needs of most of the market.

Coverflow is little more than a gimmick. It's still buggy and covers tend to blank out if you scroll quickly. Cover art has been downloaded with previous software versions and with other players, so the ability to scroll covers is not really a breakthough.

Keep in mind that the iPod actually still has less features than most competitive devices. It doesn't have a radio tuner, voice recorder, bluetooth, WMA support, etc. But what it does it does well.

Overall this device is an improvement. Apple really wins with sleek design and a wealth of accessories. This unit is no different. While it is not perfect, none of the competition is good enough to dominate it any time soon.

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, just needs a little bit more memory.......2007-09-16

This is my third iPod, but my first flash-based one. I really like the form factor of the new iPod Nano. While some people have complained about it being fatter than the previous gen Nano, it's still wonderfully small and light. The new Nano is also shorter, which personally I think makes it a better fit for small places like the coin pocket of your jeans w/o sticking out and jabbing you.

I had previously held out on getting a flash-based iPod because the storage capacity wasn't quite enough to hold my iTunes library (currently ~12GB in size). The new Nano disappointingly still has the same 8GB capacity as the 2nd gen Nano, but I just couldn't wait any longer. Too many cool features to resist, I would just have to trim down my playlists a little.

BTW, an "8GB" iPod Nano really only has 7.41GB of available storage space.

I originally wanted the black iPod Nano, but since it wasn't in stock at Amazon, I ordered a silver one. After receiving it, I'm very happy with the brushed metal silver and how it looks. No regrets.

The new Nano's fatter body allows for a wider screen suitable for watching videos. The wider screen also makes it possible for new user interface improvements, most notably the Cover Flow view. iTunes has had Cover Flow view for a while. Now it's available on the iPod. Albums w/ missing cover artwork are displayed as annoying white music notes on a gray background. (WARNING: Some individuals, like me unfortunately, may be susceptible to getting an uncontrollable urge to want to fill in all the missing cover art. I spent an entire Saturday tracking down missing cover art on the web, and am now contemplating digging up my original CDs to scan in the cover art myself for those last few albums...)

I don't know whether this is new-- it wasn't there in my 5th gen iPod Video, not sure whether the previous gen Nano had it-- but I really like the additional info displayed in the various lists. For example, the album list displays the album name, the artist beneath, and a tiny thumbnail of the album cover; the old interface displayed only the album name. As another example, the song list displays the song name with the artist name underneath; the old interface displayed just the song name, which can be confusing when you have different songs with the same name.

    Minor gripes:
    - The HOLD switch, dock connector, and headphone jack are all now located on the bottom of the Nano. As a result, the dock connector and headphone jack are so close together that it's hard to squeeze the sides of USB connector to disconnect it while the headphones are still plugged in.
    - If I connect the Nano to the USB port of my monitor, I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error. Instead, I have to connect the Nano directly to my computer's USB port. Not sure why this is. My 5th gen iPod Video works fine connecting to my monitor's USB port.

I havent gotten mine yet but it seems like it is worth the money to buy the eight gb over the old four because, it is the same amount of money for twice as much memory
