I tried to use this on my laptop with a ps/2 keyboard. It worked for about 50 char and would just stop working. I tried to unplug it and replug it.. again.. about 50 or so char. I gave up and bought a usb keyboard.. that works great.

I use this every day to connect my PS/2 keyboard and mouse to my laptop's USB. The only problem is that the first key that I hit after booting up always comes out as gobbledeegook. However, once the cache or whatever is cleared it works great the rest of the day.

I had tried several USB devices to capture old VHS and 8mm tape on a well equipped Windows box but would either have things work poorly or not at all. That was a big driving force to my switch from Windows to MAC. I initially tried one of my cheap USB devices on the MAC and it did not work. Bought the Canopus and it works flawlessly! There are lots of cheaper converters out there, but as always, you get what you pay for.

Bought this to convert PAL Hi-8 (Canon) purchased years ago in Singapore for Mac (PowerBook G4, Tiger OS-X) nonlinear editing. Worked perfectly the first time, only needed to set a single switch to select PAL. No need for software drivers etc. Happily plugged and played with the Mac and the camcorder.

I have to admit, thus far I have only used the converter one time. It worked exactly as it was designed. Plug and play. I hooked up the out ports from the VCR into the in ports on the converter and then the firewire between the converter and my laptop (Mac PowerBook). The movie was converted from analog to digital and captured by iMovie. From iMovie I converted it to a Quicktime movie, which I needed for that particular project. From what I understand the quality of the VCR and the original analog video will determine the quality of the final digital product. I look forward to converting aditional movies!

Everybody tried to get an overhead display to work in the 1st grade classroom at the Taos Pueblo Indian School. Then they asked me to help and I found this device on Amazon.
It's a little pricey, but it works in many different settings, not just the right one. I plugged it in, hid it in the back of the A/V cart cabinet and that was it. It's been happily working ever since.

THE GOOD STUFF:
It took me longer to get this product out of the packaging than it did for me to set it up. VERY user-friendly. I have this connected from the VGA output on my laptop to my LDC widescreen TV. If you are just going to use this for modest at-home computing (and aren't trying to show off your crystal-clear wham-bamm pc-to-tv connection), then this should do you just fine.
THE BAD STUFF:
Videos and graphics look great, but like everybody else has said, it is NOT the best for viewing text (words are fuzzy and text must be made very large). If you buying this product to make your TV your only computer monitor, buy something else!!

This device is excellent for showing movies, pictures, and presentations on. Browsing the web and navigating through your Microsoft explorer is difficult as the text size is very small, unless you change your DPI. But you wouldn't usually browse the web on the tv anyways. This product is good.

I initially used this product to put repeat the display from a Dell laptop running Win-XP Pro on a Sharp LCD TV, using the component video inputs. It was easy to set up, and rendered the image well. Running my laptop at a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels I found 10 pt fonts readable only with difficulty on the TV, but that is not surprising. Overall this product provides an affordable way to display sVGA on a TV.
I tried to used this product to display the output RayMarine E120 on a 26" Sony HD-TV over a long cable (25 feet). This did not work; the long cable attenuated the signal too much to be usable. Few will try such long cables, but beware that long cables can be problematic.

I have been using one of this at my workplace for several months now. I use it to connect a USB only pc through a Linksys KVM switch. It has worked without a hitch. Just this past week, we bought another usb-ps/2 adapter, but the purchasing agent bought the model 27225 from Cables to go and that one does not work through a KVM. So we are going to buy another Trendnet adapter instead.

I am using this thing with a Toshiba laptop, and a Microsoft mouse and keyboard. It installed as advertised and seemed great - until:
-Generation of random mouse clicks. Seems to do this in all programs and it is very annoying. Imaging editing in Word and having the cursor jump to the mouse cursor location, or just having random right clicks.
-Synchronization and random behavior of the CAP's lock. CAP's lock turns off and on randomly and then will not sychronize with the laptop keyboard. The only remedy I have found is a reboot.
Maybe I got a lemon, but based on other review on other sites, I cannot recommend this device.

The Plextor AV200U is probably the better choice out of all of the video capture devices that are out on the market right now. It works exactly the way it's supposed to! I found the item easy to install and use. It was pretty expensive, but I think it was worth it!

I'm as low tech as they come. I needed a firewire port so I could upload from my digital video camera. I had no idea what I was doing. I got the specs for the card from my computer manufacturer. Not for everyone... Great for me though!.......2007-07-19
BAD:
1. Even though the model number on Amazon says 558, it's really 557 - makes me feel like I paid for something extra that I didn't get.
2. My laptop only has 4-pin in firewire and the Pyro box outputs 6-pin and comes with a 6-pin to 6-pin cable, so I had to buy an extra 4-pin to 6-pin cable for this to connect.
3. It doesn't come with any software, but Windows Media Encoder and Nero's Video Capture work best from what I've tried - everything else causes the audio/video to fall out of sync.
4. This thing feels kind of cheap. I like to firmly connect my cables and this thing had me scared that I was going to push one of the connectors straight through. I have a gripe with the firewire out connector in particular - it wobbles and the cable comes loose very easily. And the plastic case defiantly doesn't feel like it's worth $150...
5. The ultra bright lights on the front. Very distracting!
GOOD:
1. I had to buy the extra firewire cable. The stuff it comes with wouldn't have been long enough and was nowhere near the quality of what I purchased separately (Belkin Pure A/V 12').
2. It has component video input/output! Good luck finding that elsewhere.
3. Once you get this thing going, it really does work very well. It won't display progressive scan and only does up to 720x480 resolution, but you can make it show widescreen.
4. I have a 17.1" LCD monitor at 1920x1200 resolution, and as long as I don't try to stretch the video to fill the entire screen it looks terrific. It's very sharp with component video and shows excellent colors.
5. The output videos are superb. It will record from a digital camcorder, composite video, S-Video, and Component Video. Not much else could be asked for! You can then use your DVD burner to make personal movies.
6. It outputs everything at the same time, so I can plug in a Component video source to the Pyro and output composite, S-video, and firewire at the same time. It's great for recording video on the computer and watching it on the TV at the same time.
Overall, the Pyro Video Converter turned out perfect for my personal needs. Others may be looking for a converter that offers something else (like direct coax), but this is what I wanted. I'm happy with the purchase; once you finally get the video showing on your computer it will feel like it was worth it.

I tried to use this with a Mac Mini. It worked, not quite as advertised (it didn't go to the highest refresh rates listed), and the played-through video to the monitor was too smudgy at higher resolutions to use. The picture on the TV was OK, but in movies with subtle shading there was visible banding from lack of color depth. I returned it and will have to use the Apple video adapter that, while requiring physical unplugging/plugging of cables to switch from monitor to TV (which is what I wanted to avoid), the picture was far better.

I just ordered this and tried it out using my laptop and large screen projection TV in my subdivision clubhouse. It is the perfect solution to conducting training and powerpoint presentations without the need for an expensive PC projector. Easy setup and operation. Only complaint is the short monitor cable and composite cable. I highly recommend this product.
Not exceptional for Video or Games.......2003-04-16
This is an ok video converter, but if you're looking to play video on your TV and have it look the same as it would on your computer, you'd probably be better off getting a nice video card with a TV-OUT port.(or just moving your monitor into the living room) The recommended use on the Startech website is presentations, which it would excel in if you have a large television. The problem with playing video on your PC to your TV it is that the picture 'folds' over itself every once in a while, like a flipbook with a couple pages missing every once in a while. The length of the cords that they include also remind me that I bought this thing for all the wrong reasons. Your television must only be six feet away from your computer(which is not true in the average home). The remote included is tiny(about the size of a letter opener) and the buttons are not easy to press. And believe me, you'll need the remote: every time you plug it in you need to adjust the V and H positions and stretches. Also it is a weak infrared remote, meaning you must practically be 5 feet away for it to give a signal. And forget about putting sound through, it's only for video. Also, when you hook your monitor up through the monitor port on this thing, it gives out a very degraded signal that makes your monitor look like it has a thin layer of fog and bars in front of it. But for the price its ok: it gives out crisp, full color conversions on your television and the fact that you need no software is a huge plus.
