I unfortunately reside on an island that uses 120V 50Hz for the electricity supply. This UPS is not listed as requiring 120V 60Hz for the input. When it is not explicitly stated, I have gotten used to expecting the electrical devices I purchase to support 120V 50Hz or 120V 60Hz. I gave it two stars, because it costs too much to ship it back, and it refuses to connect up to an electrical supply that is 120V 50Hz.

APC makes good quality products but as many have noted there are two basic problems. First, they keep changing their line-up of products so that if you product dies when out of warrenty you probably have to buy a whole new UPS unit since APC would have dropped support for your model by then and even a simple and cheap replacment part would not be available. Second, their charge an arm and a leg for replacement batteries! It is insane.. but if you do your search online and do a careful study you can probably get the same type of battery (but different brand name on it) for a lot less.
Also, I never buy the BX/XS models as they rely on the battery for some voltage regulations and that dies out the battery faster. the RS models are worth the extra bucks I think.

First a review on pricing...

There are two models - BR1500LCD (Back UPS RS 1500) and BX1500LCD (Back UPS XS 1500). The difference:

1. RS model has additional phone/fax/model/10/100base-T ethernet protection. The XS only has phone/fax/modem protection.
2. Auto Voltage Regulation is capable of BOOST (due from low voltage) and TRIM (from over voltage). Again, the XS model only has BOOST, and no TRIM feature.

The price difference between the two is USD50.00. So depending on whether you need the extra feature as well as the area on where you live to depend on the TRIM function, the better equipped model may be for you. Aside from the above they are the same in the rest of the features, battery and physical dimension.

In any case, if you plan to purchase the more expensive RS model, then Amazon is your best option - lowest price with free shipping and zero tax.

So on to the product review...

I actually owned the white APC Back-UPS XS 1500 in 2002. It was doing it's job for a good 4 years. I purchased it because it was offered on sale by a retail store. Four years later it suddenly gave up just like that. I thought the battery was dead so I ordered new batteries. In less than a day the unit went dead again. I then sent it in to a recognized APC repair shop with the new batteries I purchased and they diagnosed that the circuit board is busted. That's the reason why it was shutting down. It wasn't able to charge the battery. So it wasn't the battery that was the problem in the first place, but the circuitry of the unit itself. I threw a perfectly good battery and spent on a new one I didn't need. They said it was beyond repair as APC was not supplying those boards anymore and suggested I purchase a new unit.

In the meantime, APC's trade-up program is a joke. You are supposed to get a discount for turning in your old UPS and buying a new one from them. But the truth is they sell their units at full retail price in the first place so any discount they give you negates it and even turns out more expensive than buying online or at retail stores.

I swore off purchasing APC UPS after incurring so much expense and ending up with a note that there was no hope for a repair support for it after the warranty. This is the problem with APC and one which I told them numerous times that they offer too many product variations for the same line. New products are introduced in a year that they stop support for replacement parts on the old products.

I saw this new BLACK XS1500 with an LCD display at a brick and mortar store initially for USD199.99. For USD20.00, you're better off at Amazon for the better RS model.

Then just before the Memorial Day weekend they put it on sale at USD144.99. That's a no-brainer USD55.00 in savings for the low end model. On top of that, I would have to spend even more to get the RS model. I couldn't resist and purchased two of the XS models that day.

(NOTE: May 27 - The price is now back up to USD199.99 so it's not worth purchasing the XS model. Amazon's RS model is your best option at this point.)

The manual suggests charging the unit for 16 hours straight prior to use. It comes with the connectors disabled so the batteries remain fresh when purchased. Unlike the white version, this product is more compact due to it's smaller height being 6 inches less. Although it is 1.85 inches wider. It is also 5lbs heavier perhaps due to the new battery model.

Specs:

1. 865 Watts / 1500 VA (same as white)
2. 6 battery back up outlets and 2 surge outlets (same as white)
3. Surge energy rating is 340 Joules (white version is 420 Joules)

The white version only needs 8 hours recharge time versus the black's 16 hours. However, unlike the white version, this black version comes with an LCD which makes it very convenient and informative. How?

1. It will tell you input voltage of the outlet. Now you'll know if there's something wrong with the supplied current.
2. It will tell you the output voltage it is giving to your equipment.
3. You are given the actual load in Watts as well as percentage and a bar graph to help you determine how much more you can connect. No more guessing how much your computer is taxing the UPS.
4. The most convenient of all features is the bar graph showing how much battery life is left. Manual states you can expect to replace battery within 3-6 years. Umm, okay. This time it will tell you how much battery life is left. A real life saver to help you determine if the battery is being charged properly and when it's time to start saving for that ubber expensive APC battery replacement part.

You have a choice of having the display shut off for stealth mode. In fact it comes with this feature enabled from the factory. I changed the setting to show me the real-time display of my computer load so I know how hard my processor is working.

By the way, I'm using an Apple Power Mac G5 2.0 DP (with a massive nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL graphics card, 4 internal - 3x250GB, 1x160GB SATA hard disks, an SATA PCI-X and FireWire 800 PCI-X controller. There is also a 23" monitor and HP scanner. All are idling at an averaging 215 Watts. That's only 24% of the capacity of the unit and a good 22 minutes of runtime. With five (5) more free outlets, it enables me to work the computer under heavy load, add more external peripheral and still get respectable runtime left.

The Cons...

1. APC makes too many models every year. Apart from that, they make sub-models and confusing branding within a model as you have seen in this case - RS is also known as the BR1500, XS is also known the BX1500. I've lost support for replacement parts on the white version by the time the unit gave in. I was hoping to be able to simply replace batteries and keep adding more UPS units. In my case, I needed to throw the old one with no hope for repair.

2. APC makes expensive products. There are a handful of other manufacturers that make similar LCD units for way less. I would have gone that route, but the current sale they are offering this brings the price at par with the less known brands.

3. APC battery prices are crazy expensive. They last around 3-6 years. You would need to replace them for continued functionality. Sadly my old APC UPS gave up first than the battery. Being out of warranty, my only choice was to buy a new unit.

If you actually dissect the APC battery, you'll know it's manufactured by some other company. If you're resourceful enough you can grab the very same model for way less. But make sure it's the same brand and model because there are a lot of cheaper battery replacements out there that don't last as long.

4. I wanted to state that APC is expensive because of reliability so that should offset the pricing. Well, in my case I get less than satisfactory product life.

5. Software version is very old. There are no 2007 updates especially for a Mac. In fact the CD that came with this NEW product is older than what is available at the APC website.

My suggestion - just like the LCD read out, they need to make this data possible to display on your computer screen so you don't have bend down and check runtime and load levels, if and when needed.

6. Furthermore, one more convenient LCD readout should report UPS temperature. I believe this may help reduce failure of units especially when heavily loaded.

Verdict...

Amazon's RS offering at less than retail is a great purchase. If you can find the lower XS model for USD150.00 and won't be needing the TRIM function from over voltate power supply, I would suggest grabbing it quick.

Either model you choose, the LCD display feature is a very convenient addition as it gives you real-time report. These current black models are more compact and able to fit in smaller spaces under your desk.

As for the life of the product, only time will tell if these choke right after warranty period.

So four (4) stars right now especially if you find them on sale at a brick and mortar store.

Glad I bought it........2007-09-12

Gives my P3 600 MHz + CRT about 30 minutes after the power is out, which seems to be happening more. Keeps a history of faults. I thought I bought the 1000VA unit for home, not this one, but that is what Amazon is saying.

Could use a few more outlets on the back, even if they were just the surge protector outlets. Wall warts cover up some slots, especially for the speakers.

You cannot run a refrigerator off of it. Yes you can plug it in, yes the lights will come on, fan motor will turn, but the moment the compressor kicks in pop goes the circuit breaker. Just thought you should know.

When buying battery backups, the manufacturers seem to love to hide what is the total amp-hours or watt-hours of the battery pack, and this one is hard to find too. Just compare run time at a certain wattage level. Whether a UPS can do 1000W or 1500W is less important than does it last 30 minutes or an hour. How many people have 1000W power supplies in their computer (yeah, the monitor and printer draws power too).

Best UPS I've had for home office, and most expensive.......2007-03-21

The reason I had to spend this much for a UPS (in January of 2007) is because I wanted to keep my Dual-Core Pentium PC with two hard drives and DVD drives, two external hard drives, an LCD monitor, a modem, and a network hub running for a few minutes when the power goes out. Whatever a salesman tells you, you can't do all that for much less than what this costs. I tried!

Both APC and Tripplite have good calculators on their websites that tell what size UPS you need for the amount of things you have relying upon the UPS. My advice is to upgrade one notch from what the calculator suggests. Modern PC's (plus modems and hubs) take much more power than they did five years ago.

I've had APC in the US since 1992 and while working as an IT manager in China for five years, so I trust it and find that the brand is still reliable.

This slim tower design fits nicely under my desk and allows for different sized plugs to be arranged sensibly in the back.

One little snag to this UPS worked itself out: when I first got it, a faint unpleasant smell came from the unit. I called APC and got through very quickly. They admitted knowing of the problem and said give it three weeks to burn off some circuit-board lamination materials. Within ten days the smell was gone and I now have no complaints. APC also said that future units would not have the problem. Plus I found out that APC's customer service was excellent.

Last note: when comparing the price, be sure to note that this is the RS series; some stores have an older, discontinued model that looks very similar.

Overall, I'm very satisfied and feel the price was fair for equipment and data protection. Fast delivery from Amazon.

Best investment, ever........2007-03-18

This has been the best investment I've made for quite some time. After experiencing the black out after the earthquake that hit Hawaii last year and having my computer die, I invested into this unit. I read a few reviews from various sites that said there was issues with it and that often times it came broken. I thought to myself the good reviews outweigh the bad so I'm going to try it and see. Sure enough this unit came with no problems. I plugged it in and let it charge over night. I then added my computer and my monitor to it. I've seen it kick in while the lights dimmed at my home and I'm so thankful that it has saved my computer. If anything everyone should invest in one of these for their computers. I fix computers for a living and more often than not people bring in their dead computers due to a power outage or power surge.

It was good for an indoor fireworks show..........2007-02-21

I purchased this item based on past experience and reputation. However, I definitely got a lemon this time around. After connecting the battery, I plugged it in. I then pushed the power button. As it was going through it's self test, sparks and smoke started pouring out the front! I unplugged it right away, but of course that didn't stop the fireworks show, as the battery was still connected. And of course the battery cover was directly below where the sparks were shooting out of. I got the battery unplugged and opened a window, as the whole room smelled like there was an electrical fire. I have to believe this was due to something getting jarred loose in shipping. Amazon gets 0 stars for shipping out a sensitive electronic device in it's original packaging, with no extra padding. I am sure the UPS guys were nice to it in transit :) At least their returns process is painless. I am going to buy another one locally.

Great Product, Neg Posters should have read manual.......2007-02-17

We have several of these APC UPSs at work. They all have worked wonderfully. We did however had a small problem with one of them on a Pentium D with dual monitors. The fix, quoted in this post was quite simple and easy to follow. Since at least two other posters for this product have given unwarranted poor ratings I felt compelled to post it here.

"I discovered the problem, which may be affecting other folk. This sort of UPS has "AVR" - automatic Voltage Regulation - when the wall voltage drops, the UPS boosts it. When the wall volts drops too far, the UPS starts using battery power in an attempt to keep its output voltage at 120V. One time, when restarting, I had the Kill-A-Watt meter measuring the Mac Pro's current - it hit 5 Amps and the UPS went onto battery, and then moments later into overload, and then shut down. Re-reading the UPS instructions, it appears that these machines can be set to respond to very minor wall voltage variations, average voltage variations, or only crass, major variations. There's a simple way of setting this (read the instructions for full info - available on the APC website). Mine was set to respond to the tiniest of wall-voltage variations - and that meant it saw the small voltage drop caused by the inrush current to the Mac Pro, went onto battery power, and commited elegant suicide.
Resetting it to allow crass, major variations has completely cured the problem. I may yet set it to respond to "average" variations."

Excellent UPS.......2007-02-10

I've been using several of these for years with my electronic equipment , from an SVS subwoofer, a Denon receiver, to a 1080P DLp set. I have all my electronic components attached to one of these. They have worked flawlessly. I also like that you can set it so the alarm doesn't come on when there is an outage. So you don't have to constantly hear the incessant beeping. Just use the Powerchute software to set it up and disable the alarm. And if you add the external APC battery pack(APC BR24BP) that Amazon sells you can get many more hours of ruuntime during an outage depending on the load.

After 3+ years Still Kicking.......2007-01-03

I've had the APC Back-UPS RS 1500VA and the 2nd battery pack since the December 22, 2003 6.5 Earthquake in CA knocked out power. No problems what so ever since. Recently bought a DVR and going to buy a second one of these prolly to protect it.

APC overload.......2006-09-07

Apc is not made in America. Mine was made in Bangalore India. I should have paid heed to the other bad review. My unit acted just like he said. I purchased my XS1500 in July 2006. The first of Sept. the unit went to overload. All I had was an 210 watt load (monitor and harddrive). I unplugged everything and it still went to overload.
I plugged my monitor and harddrive into the wall and they are fine. Don't try to deal with APC online because there isn't any response and you'll get into an endless loop, just go ahead`and call right away. My brand new unit is going to be replaced by a refurbished unit and I will have to pay for shipping. You only get free shipping if it fails within 30 days. Don't buy this unit.

Great Backup Power Option.......2007-08-21

I purchased this along with the BR1500 last year and so far I have been extremely pleased. When the power goes out, I can get around 1.5 hours of additional runtime from my equipment. This handles quite a bit of equipment. It does take awhile to fully charge after a complete drain and that is expected considering the size of the batteries.

It may seem expensive on paper, but nothing is that expensive considering you are plugging thousands of dollars worth of equipment into it and if you are in the IT industry, uptime is obviously very important. I highly recommend this product as a wonderful compliment to the BR1500.

A handy option, but it's expensive..........2007-05-23

The APC BR24BP is an expansion battery pack for the Back-UPS RS1200 and RS1500 UPS unit. This unit offers additional runtime for these UPS models, which can be handy if you have one that is heavily loaded and need to get some more runtime out of it.

This product, while convenient and well thought out, is expensive. It is hard to imagine batteries costing almost as much as the UPS itself, and yet they do. Furthermore, APC does not provide any instruction on how to service the batteries in this unit when they wear out. Strangely enough, they don't even provide a ready means to recycle the unit when its batteries are depleted. In this age of environmental concerns and the need to recycle hazardous items, this decision on the part of APC is bewildering, especially since APC does collect products for recycling at the end of their useful lives.

If you need the extended runtime and have a relatively new compatible UPS, this might be the product for you It's well made and goes nicely with the RS1200/1500 UPS models. Unfortunately, it is expensive and not user-serviceable.

This is an excellent compliment to the BX1500 or BR1500 UPS. With this battery attached I get several more hours of runtime depending on the load. Definitely worth it for extended use during power outages.

APC makes very good products; I have been using their stuff for over 20 years and have only had one problem that APC support took care of quickly.

The only negative thing about this battery pack is it does not have user replaceable batteries
