Amazing amazing amazing sound .......2006-04-26
This system with the dvd player is incredible. I have plugged it into my mac and play all my i-tunes from it, and also have it connected to a projection screen tv. (Since I already have all my music digitized, I saw no reason to buy the upgraded model which would digitize all the songs directly onto the Bose receiver.)
The demonstration I heard in the local Bose store sold me on the system, and when I got home and pulled it out of the box, I had it up and running in about 20 minutes.
The system comes with Bose's own, "adaptiq" system which allows the system to calibrate the sound system to fit your room.
Basically they give you a headset that is outfitted with little microphones that allows the Bose receiver to listen to what the system sounds like in different parts of the room. It then optimizes the output of the five speakers to make sure the best sound reaches those areas evenly. You pick five places where you think you will watch movies or listen to music from, and you sit in each one for about a minute while the speakers emit weird sounds, and then presto, it is calibrated and you can have perfect sound throughout the room.
I was a little skeptical about it until I tried it out, and watched my first movie. It is better sound than any movie theater I have been to.
If you have the means to purchase this system and you are serious about sound, I recommend this product without reservation. I also suggest you get the whole Bose system over the speakers and a regular receiver because of the added Bose technology. The speakers by themselves are great but the Bose receiver makes them unbelievable.
My wife was a bit miffed at the price, but agrees that the sound is amazing. It has turned our weekly family movie night into a neighborhood event.

this is by far the best BOSE system ever built.No questions about it.The music is shrill and fantastic,and the acoustics are simply superb.have a good 34" TV and see the dvds rip the hell out of you ! try watching matrix reloaded or terminator 3.music of mp3 and cds are out of this world.it will suit a box type living room very well.the speakers belt out music, madonna would be proud off.this is the one.this is GOD itself.thanks amazon.thanks bose.this is what we human beings live for.as i said before,take a bow.move over sony,jbl,panasonic and the likes.the bose has arrived.

Not nearly as good as systems based on Bose Jewel Cube speakers.......2007-08-16
Recently got a Bose Lifestyle 28 refurb unit, it was still pretty expensive. Quick thoughts:
Setup: the build quality and cables are all top-notch. Everything has a plug and every single wire was easy to set up. The wires didn't hide too wel in the two sets of stands I bought from Bose. Using the adapti-q system to balance the speakers was the appeal of the system.
Video: the new progressive scan features use a combo s-video and composite y-adapter to component to send a full progressive scan signal. I was skeptical at first, but was pretty pleased with the image quality and black levels put out by the unit on the LG 32LC2D HDTV. Not bad picture and it really did put out progressinve scan!
The central unit still relies to heavily on legacy ports: composite everywhere, 2 s-video, 2 coaxial and only 1 optical input. If you have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 (or two) only one of them will work with optical on this system.
Audio: there was no hiss or noise that I could hear when the system was on and no sound was playing, that's a plus. Video games through the optical sounded pretty good through the optical input, although separation was lost a little in the speakers. CD-based Music sounded pleasingly warm.
Now the bad part: this speaker set produces pretty crummy sound for movies. Dialog sounded muffled and quiet, voices were causing the acoustimass module to kick in a little too much- resulting in deep tones associated with normal voices on the Hot Fuzz DVD, while voice work in Star Wars sounded like people were talking through a pillow! Large battle scenes lost their high-end sparkle- the clangs of swords, shattering of glass, or screeching of tires all were toned down and warmed by the over-powering tilt towards mid sounds in the acoustimass module.
Bass response was powerful although undefined and needs tighter response. Staccato sounds become a constant tone.
Giant battle scenes in Star Wars and LOTR became a mess in surround- nothing was distinct or separated. The opening Tripod sequence in War of the Worlds had heavy bass, powerful mids, and almost nothing else. The bursting of the pavement was ominously powerful, but the crumbling dirt, smashed cars, and zaps of energy beams were all muted and lost by the overzealous acoustimass module. Screams of the crowd became lost in the soundtrack of the movie! Brass and violas were more readily audible than the scream of a charcter on camera.
I turned the treble compensation all the way up to little improvement, except it made "s" sounds in dialog sizzle too much, while keeping vowels in the deep mid-tone prison. Easing down bass compensation dropped the Low frequncy channel effects, but left dialog sounding way too bass heavy and overly warm in that same area of overcompensation. I ran the adapt-IQ system again and again, I moved furniture, and called customer service. These did not help and I became increasingly alarmed about spending $1850 on this system.
Ultimately, I decided to return my $1850 Bose Lifestyle 28's and stick with my $150 Klipsch Pro Media 5.1. These speakers are not great, but at least I can hear what people are saying in films. There is better seperation in this setup than in Bose's direct/reflecting speakers.
The Bose cost ten times as much, produced 10 times the room filling sound, but left nothing distict enough to hear in movies for an average OR discerning listener.
If you have the money, try the Lifestyle 35's, as they produce a much brighter sound and still have enough mid and deep range to make movies pop.
Avoid the Lifestyle 28's and get a Home theater in a box solution from one of the major retailers.
A big, and expensive disappointment.
Customer Service notes: I have to end this with the fact that despite my clear frustrations, I was treated with incredible courtesy and friendliness by everyone at Bose. I have not had a better experience so far with a customer service department.

We have enjoyed our system for 4 years now. The quality and sound is everything it is advertised to be. Sound effects and music videos could not be better. Sound is great from any seat in the room. I think it is best suited for average sized rooms of about 15x20 ft or smaller. Volume is more than adequate for normal tastes. For extremely loud, ground shaking effects you will want to look elsewhere.
High Performance system that takes a lot less space.......2004-11-10
We purchased our system to replace a previous Sony multi-module stereo that took up far more room. The compact nature of this system allows a used to use one small shelf for the main unit, and then the speakers can be positioned wherever you want and still deliver amazing sound.
Setup is pretty simple, with a pictograph easily explaining the connections, and then a DVD that guides you through the last few phases. The climax comes when the system uses a special headset you wear in different locations that provides feedback to the system for automatic optimal sound delivery. I know, it sounds crazy, but is cool to have the system fine tune itself.
Playing DVDs is pretty simple, but I wish the system allowed a faster fast forward scan. There is an adapter to allow the video output to be converted to a component output, which is better than an S cable, which is better than the traditional red, white and yellow jacks most people are familiar with. You just need a modern, high end TV that handles component input (like my Samsung DLP) to appreciate it. The surround sound aspect is awesome, and we truly enjoy watching our favorite DVDs with rich, realistic sound that can rattle the house if so desired.
Music CDs come across as clear and sharp, and the bass driven from the subwoofer is convincing when needed.
As far as listening is concerned, you can choose how many speakers you want to use, from 2, 3 or 5. The easy to use remote can control almost anything without a need for the TV screen menu, but that's wasy enough to understand once you get through the difficulties of the manual's technical instructions.
Overall, I am very pleased, and look forward to many years of service from this system.
Bose, only for real people........2004-10-05
OK, having read such mixed reviews, I felt I had to get to the bottom of things, so I visited a number of dealers, some who sold Bose and some who did not.
I could not believe what a difference in attitude there was between the Bose believers and the Bose haters. So, why is this?
I can only assume it's a lack of understanding or fear of the unknown. Almost every one agrees that if space, operational issues, cable and time were no problem, you can do better than Bose for the money, but for normal people who have little space and time and no inclination to create a pile of mismatched electronics that look ... odd (to say the least) the Bose is a superb option.
What about sound? When a Bose comes out of the box, it sounds Ok in most rooms, but when you use the adaptIQ it really sorts out, even strange shaped rooms like mine where the TV is in the corner and the speakers are impeded by curtains and book shelves.
What about the strange sounding music reported in another review? Sure one or two pieces did not seem to like the Bose 5 speaker experience, but I just pressed the 2 speaker button on my remote and the sound was true and stereo and no where near the TV. For most music however, band and classic especially, the Bose 5 speaker sound is superb, to my ears. I do sometimes turn the centre down a little if there is a strong vocal presence mind you; this spreads it out to a more normal stereo sound stage, but keeping the band and ambiance all around me.
My advice is don't take advice, listen and decide your self. Brands like Bose and B&O did not get to be huge by conning people, they did it by making what people want and it is only people who don't want Bose or B&O solutions who seem intent on bad mouthing them? I've got a Bose and it's great, more people in the world own Bose speakers than any other brand and I guess they think they are great, I hope your choice, what ever it is, works as well for you.

But if u are action movie fans this system is not for u it lacks the power. if u do buy it up grade the cube speaker to the book shelf speaker like the 301 V or 201 V. this system is for those who are a Romance or Love movie fan it will fit all there needs. and those who are looking for a good system with speaker that u cant see bose will fit it. but u can buy other system at better prices from sony, Kenwood, JBL and have good sound just like bose. Look this system is alright but not great for the price and people like myself who love action movies.

I'm really not sure what to say about the bad reviews of this product. I can't imagine why anyone would not be impressed by the sound coming from these tiny cube speakers. As they did not mention it in their reviews, I can only assume that the people who were unhappy with their products did not read the instructions (it is fairly simple to figure out) and play the setup DVD that came with it. Before running the AdaptIQ program, the system sounds decent. Then I ran the software and the system literally came alive and adjusted itself perfectly to my room (it's an odd "L" shape and I was getting an unbalanced sound at first).
In terms of music listening, I have not heard anything that matched the spaciousness in this price range. I listened to a lot of products and the Lifestyle system blew me away. Its music processing changed a regular stereo CD into a surround sound experience which was 20 times better than a traditional dolby processing in a traditional receiver. This also works well with TV and radio.
If you are looking for a great sounding product with an elegant appearance and a simple setup, then go with a Bose Lifestyle system. Just run the setup software. :P

Overpriced and low quality- You pay for the name.......2004-02-01
Bose has designed a system which probably costs them less than $400 in parts to build and retails them for close to $3000. Yet consumers still buy into this. Incredible.
Bose has made a name for itself by aiming its advertising towards consumers with little or no knowledge of audio equipment. It sells speakers and systems like this that are of poorer quality and absolutely worse performance than its competitors. I know, I owned several Bose products for years (901s, 301s and 201s) until I began to learn more about audio technology and quality. I was literally blown away by the quality of commonly sold Polk speakers when placed next to Bose products. Polk isn't "cutting edge" but builds a decently designed product for its price point.
I recommend that you look at other products here on Amazon. There are several Pioneer, Sony, JVC and Kenwood DVD/CD players and A/V receivers that are offered for less than $500 combined who VASTLY outperform Bose.
As for speakers Amazon carries Polk, JBL and Wharfedale ANY of whom offer loudspeakers with substantially better engineered insides. Most important of all these speakers sound heads and tales better than Bose for around $250 to $1000.
Bose is a testament to the power of advertising over product. In many ways it is a fascinating company whose products are based on late 1960's theories of audio using tweeters and woofers that Radio Shack parts outperform (this isn't a joke but has been measured several times by audio enthusiasts).
