My monitor has a manufactured date of March 2001. The red tube must be dead, because I'm getting no red in my pictures. The picture's still really sharp, but wish I had all my colors back.

Its a great monitor if you can find the driver. Which I can't. The samsung webpage crashes IE every link I click, and I've wasted an entire evening trying to find a driver for it and it still wont work.

BUYER BEWARE!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT FROM AMAZON!!.......2002-12-28

Here's why: I bought this to replace a monitor that seemed to be going haywire--turns out it was fine. I tried to cancel the order but wasn't permitted (it was too far in the process in less than 24 hours.) I didn't want to pay $40 tp return it so it sat for 3 months until I added a new computer for my business. After a week it started going in and out of focus, rendering it unusable. Although it was defective, Amazon wouldn't take it back (it was more than 30 days) and Samsung would replace it only with a charge of $40.

The bottom line: $140 monitor I could have bought at the mall and returned for a refund, $70 in shipping and days of hassle. I am an Amazon stockholder and I hate to say it but I would never buy a monitor or any electronics this way again.

As for the monitor itself, when it works--it's ok, nothing special and certainly not worth this aggravation.

Standard TVs (SDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the interlaced scan method, which creates a picture with alternating lines of information.

Enhanced-definition TVs (EDTVs) display a maximum of 480 lines using the progressive-scan method, which creates an image using consecutive lines of information for a crisp, flicker-free picture.

Gateway's plasma TVs are astonishingly thin.

This is an EDTV (enhanced-definition) TV, so it's capable of displaying progressive-scan 480p signals in their native resolution. A built-in digital scaling engine accepts various computer and HDTV signals, then digitally maps them to fit the screen's 852 x 480 pixels. Compatible signals include computer display resolutions up to 1,280 x 1,024 and all HDTV signals, including 720p and 1080i.

Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p and 720p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional interlaced pictures, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

A plasma screen consists of two thin sheets of glass containing tiny, gas-filled cells. Electronic current stimulates the cells to produce light and color, creating bright, steady, vivid pictures. So I went to pick this tv up yesterday...set it up and my first impression was that visually the tv is nice looking, really really huge screen! (coming from a 35in crt)So I hook everything (and there are alot of connection choices)up and put in Monsters, Inc. My first impression : Nice color, what the hell is wrong with the blacks? THERE WERE TONS OF GREEN DOTS IN ALL OF THE BLACK!!!!!!!! ACCCK! So I thought a bit and switched out the video from component to Svideo..problem solved, the picture quality is really nice on DVDs for this price point ($1999) My only gripe is that regular cable looks not so great, but thats a small point since I dont watch anything but the news.

In the end, I think this is a great starter plasma or a purchase for someone trying to build credit (like me)
