This product works as advertised and I have no complaints there. The quality if the cabinet is rather shoddy though. But it works better than the one it replaced!

I got this drive because the "superdrive" that came with my dual processor G4 couldn't handle any of the installation DVDs for the new software I was getting. This worked beautifully immediately. I now use it for anything other than CDs and CD ROMs--the Mac drive just doesn't handle anything on DVDs a tenth as well, if at all.

Great but CAUTION MAC USERS.......2005-08-25

This product is super, but there is absolutely no external DVD product that will play region one encoded movies on a mac (legally). Windows systems will play commercial movies and read data and burn unencoded blank dvds. Mac systems just burn on blank dvds and read dvds.

I do not know why the problem exists, but mac users who want to WATCH dvd commercially enoded movies instead of just access and burn data need to get a combo or super drive installed.

Excellent product for the price.......2005-05-18

I bought this external dvd burner for my old laptop (year 2000 model with 512 MB memory) about one month back and I had no problem so far. I have burned around 75 DVDs (16x, 8x), 10 CDs. Because my laptop is an old one it took around 1 hour to burn each 8x DVD, but when I borrowed my friends laptop (which is year 2004 model with 256 MB memory) each 8x DVD was burned in about 5 minutes. Amazing difference a new laptop made.

Pros: This burner works so qietly, I am really impressed. Easily plugged in, no errors or issues so far.

Cons: No documentation or manual comes with the product whatsoever. I had to rely on their website (www.lacie.com) for some information.

Mine works fine with 8x discs and Nero Ultra 6. Amazon has the wrong picture and actual Model 300776U cannot be used in vertical position for space saving. There is no stand either. You can put it on the PC horizontally if it's for PC. I sometimes used with my Compaq notebook. It's cool and quiet. Other than the positon, it's fine with single layered DVD+R/-Rs for 3 months now. I don't give 5 stars because I haven't tried with Double layered discs yet as well as tech support... who knows? ... you may need it one day... So far, this is much better than Plextor EXTERNAL PX-708UF with extremely slow speed and poor tech support.

Burnt out my USB hub.......2005-02-01

On paper the product looked great. And the box is small and sleek. But when my drive arrived and I followed the directions and plugged it into my USB hub I got complaints from my usb bus along the lines of 'voltage overload'. And I smelt a burning plastic. It never worked, and I think my hub and one of the ports on my USB card are now burnt out. I was not impressed.

I'm happy with it!!. You can make back up on DVDs and is external excellent for people like me with a labtop. I have a 1Gb memory in my camara and every time that I copy all my pictures to the 60Gb disk of my labtop I have less space. I bought it because I was without space on my hardisk. With tradicional CDs to backup 40Gb you needs around 60 CDs but with DVDs you can do it with less than 10 (and if you use doble layer you can use the half)

Just received the writer ! ! but immediately had problems with it specially when trying to copy from DVD to DVD, Popcorn stops, have to uninstall and reinstall popcorn to make it work again, still waiting for the response from Lacie's support.

Cons:
1) Cables hang out sides, very awkward. Makes putting on a stereo shelf look just plain ugly.
2) The IR on this unit is a disaster! My Pioneer remotes make this unit switch DVI inputs. Then you have to flip these dip switches on your Gefen remote, then dips on the switcher...then try again! Arrrggghhh.

Stinks. I will try another brand.

How it works:
Gefen's extendit DVI Splitter is a stackable distribution hub that sends the same DVI graphics source to two or more DVI based digital screens (flat panels or projectors). this was the video card that started to set the bar for others at the time. 3dfx was doing some amazing stuff, and all my friends wanted this card...until the Voodoo 3 came out, then things changed. This was still an excellent value, running 50 bucks or so at the time, and worked well in many second systems of my friends. It would play all the classics flawlessly like need for speed and nascar 98 ect... Well worth getting if you have an old pc that you play games on.

Still an Excellent Card.......2002-04-06

Even though this card is only 12megs remember that it is a 3D accelerator that is added as an expansion of your regular video card. This card handles the 3D processing exclusively. As well, two card can be put together to give 24megs and double the processing power.

To correct a few mistakes by other reviewers. VooDoo2 works great with the latest DirectX. The only problem you might have is if you are using old drivers. Get the latest drivers from [their website]
In many ways there is more support for these cards now then when 3DFX was in business. The user base for VooDoo is huge.
This card is very easy to setup on any system. I have set it up on Windows95, 98, 2000 very fast and with no difficulty. It is one of the easiest to install expansion cards I have installed. As long as you have the latest drivers.

The other comment made by a reviewer here stated that this card was only good for Starcraft. Well Starcraft is not a 3D game. VooDoo does nothing for Starcraft, you cannot even use VooDoo to run Starcraft because Starcraft uses NO 3D technology. However I personally play Unreal with a single VooDoo2 12meg card and it flies on my K6-2 350.

The other benefit of having a VooDoo2 is that it runs games using GLide better and faster and with more features than newer 3D cards since such games were programmed specifically for VooDoo.

Still a great card!.......2002-04-03

Though the V2-1000 is an old card, it is still very usable, even with fairly recent games. We have three systems with the V2: an AMD K6-450 (dual cards, SLI), a PII233 (dual cards, SLI), and a PII233 (single card). Our favorite online game is Half Life (mainly Team Fortress), and these antique systems consistently deliver frame rates well over 60fps. Half Life has a 3DFX "minidriver" that takes full advantage of these cards in OpenGL mode! The primary drivers that come with the card work well - in fact, they are the only drivers I have found that consistently work at all. The textures are very smooth, and much more viewable than the rather grainy performance of many more modern cards in OpenGL or Direct3D. This card is a great choice for anyone with a slower cpu (or no AGP), since the card(s) takes the load off your processor. I'm sure I will have to upgrade someday (probably PNY GeForce3 TI200), but I have yet to see anything that will deliver this sort of performance on an older system. If you want solid performance using PCI on an antique system (like mine!), and your favorite programs support it, buy this card. Or better yet, buy two!

Gets the job done..........2002-01-09

This card gets the job done. For may of us who don't have the latest high-end systems, this card is for you. I recommend getting 2 and connect together via SLI to get 1024x768 resolution.

Bad with DirectX.......2001-12-31

This card came with my computer 3 years ago. We've never been able to use it becuase of its incapatability with DirectX 8. The company that manufactures it, 3dfx, went out of business a while ago and is no longer making new drivers for the card. I would avoid all the trouble and get a different card.
