The Basics

terrible laptop.......2007-09-18

-Keeps freezing and blue screening every few hours. No fix for bug.

-Hard drive has failed several times, but miraculously has come back to life. Took it to Toshiba repair shop but they had no fix for the problem, albeit putting in a new hard drive, and forcing me to lose all my data. Let's see how long it lasts this time.

-There was also a class-action lawsuit pertaining to this computer (and other Toshiba models) and hard drive problems, and how it fails because of static electricity.

-Noisy even when on "silent mode."

-Very poor battery life. Lasts 40 minutes now, after two years of owning. The most it ever lasted was 1.5 to 2 hours. Couldn't finish long movies.

Not a very fast computer either. And my 60 GB hard drive has filled up with less than a year of pictures and some videos. Don't buy this if you care about a) saving your data and b) having a reasonable amount of media.

I just got a new HP 12.1" Tablet Tx1220US a couple of days ago, and as soon as the CompUSA TAP, three year extended warranty runs out(in 5 months), I plan to upgrade various pieces of hardware on the S161 of my Satellite M35X version as a hobby (my processor is 1.3 ghz instead of (S163's)1.4 ghz, the only difference it seems). As CompUSA has left WA state except for Spokane, and my 3 year extended warranty is with them, I am waiting for a box with a shipping label so I can send it in for repairs.
I have had 4 motherboard replacements (they claim), however, I see the dc-in port advertised as an easy replacement (at least 2x this has failed). Retail for the MoBo is $300, but in case I break it I have seen "pulls" for $99. Three mobo replacements were on Toshiba's dime in the very 1st year, but the last was from CompUSA, and this last replacement has been longlasting! I have had three external power supply breakdowns, 2 were the LiteOn Toshiba OEM, and one a CompUSA supplied generic. This is also with using aftermarket ac/dc adapters from Targus and Kensington extensively.

Current problems:
1)the memory door/cover has disintegrated where the vents are
2)one of the rear USB jacks has lost its center piece, so cannot function
3)rubber feet and rubber lid cushions are lost (the ones that have fallen off and I have found and kept have been super-glued back on which works quite well)
4) Lid hinge with screen seems very wobbly
5) original 1.5 hr battery hasn't been used for over a year and doesn't keep or hold a charge
6) Lost screw on the hard drive door/slider

Because of all of the repairs to the MoBo, I had hoped to participate in the Class action suite against Toshiba (static discharge), which seemed like it could have paid me $50 per MoBo repair, but my S/N was not included, but I filled out all the forms and sent in all the repair documentation. However, the Toshiba warranty has been extended to Nov. 6 2008, and perhaps CompUSA will bill them for repairs.

Things I would like to upgrade:

HD to 7200 RPM Hitachi or Seagate 100Gb+ (maybe a 2x performance boost, because the current one is 4200 RPM, and a newer one would also have a larger cache)

Processor from Celeron M 1.3 ghz to Pentium M Centrino 2+ ghz (1.5x speed boost and better power management)

I already have the 3hr battery, the CompUSA TAP plan includes one battery replacement for the original half capacity one, however.

The Wifi miniPC card could be exchanged out for a 400 mw card, the current one, though nice, is probably less than 200 mw.

Using this notebook today, I realized that I am very attached to it, and with all the repairs etc. and seemingly pretty good operation now, the love/hate relationship is currently on the affection pole. Not being dependent on it fairly exclusively, helps too!

The static shut-downs that were the source of the class action lawsuit against Toshiba, started happening overwhelmingly at about 4 months of ownership, which unfortunately was in June at the end of the University quarter I was attending. With the glitch in Dragon Naturally Speaking which prevents "saves" on spontaneous shutdowns, I lost about 1.5 days of very hectic term paper writing in MS Word, and messed up a PowerPoint presentation. As soon as the quarter ended it went back to Toshiba via CompUSA TAP, and it took 2.5 weeks to get back.

Actually, CompUSA has a 21 day return policy, w/o a restocking fee, I believe, and the 1st static shutdown occured during this time and I called a CompUSA store associate about this (he suggested I return it!), but apparently it didn't continue to happen. I had a $319 3 yr TAP plan, and $100 3 yr Computrace subsription, too, besides having opened everything and registering the SN online, so I didn't want to return it, if it could be avoided. My final price with rebates had been $800 (before taxes and without plans), but still within the 21 day return period, the M35X-S161 went on sale at Office Depot for $600 with rebates. Both Office Depot and CompUSA have pricematch, as well as Visa does, but I did not act in time to take advantage of these, the first round. Later it's "base price" was offered $50 lower at another store within 90 days of purchase and Visa did send me $50, but with the other merchants/manufacturer rebates the final price would have been $200 less than what my final price was after rebates, but before Visa's largesse.

This was my first permanent ownership of a laptop. I had bought a Compaq Presario 710RS (I think, 1ghz Duron) about 18 months previous to the Feb.1 2005 purchase of the S161 Tosh lappy. Radio Shack has a 30day return policy for RS CardHolders, and because pixels started dying and the laptop was immensly under-outfitted, I returned it. I had had 3 desktop PCs(DTK + AMD generic mobo, Compaq Presario 5712, self-built Intel 900 mhz Pentium III) before the Tosh., and one year ago, I bought a Dell Dimension 310E with a 19" LCD monitor, which I have rarely used, but will start doing extensive backups to and use as a print server after I setup a 3 client network for my 2 lappys and desktop.

A HORRIBLE LAPTOP.......2007-03-02

A horrible system, always shuts off and always gets stuck, I have 2 of these computers and one of them turns off every few minutes, and the other one has a new display problem everyday.
So This computer is defintly a horrible buy.
SO PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVICE!

I bought this as a lightweight computer for my wife to use in teaching. I quickly loaded XP Pro and Office 2003 Pro and this little bugger has been working wonders. VERY few problems and those attributed more to virus and spyware activity. Small complaint on battery life.
So far we have gotten as much as 3 hours, but that was on LongLife mode which is a little slow. Great however, if you will be on the same document for a long time. Our avg time at full power is about 1.5-2 hrs. Wireless was a real cinch with this laptop also. I'd buy it again.

PS - Do wish it had a printer port though. There are only USB ports for accessories.

Very Good Laptop for the Money.......2005-11-10

I needed a replacement laptop for my aging IBM ThinkPad, but I did not want to spend a lot of money. I figured if I managed to live with a 6 year old 700 mhz Celeron based machine for 4 years and it was for the most part functional when I retired it , I could get by with a low end new laptop. I use this laptop for my Real Estate business and the wide screen definitely helps. Now I don't have to scroll from left to right to see all the data from the listing services. Excel Spreadsheets are easier to manage because you can see more columns on the wide screen without scrolling or freezing panes.

It has a DVD player, but I don't use that feature very often.

I do use the wireless internet connection as well as wired ethernet. Both work very well. I have never had to rely on the battery only( without AC) so I can't comment on battery life.

This unit is lighter than my ThinkPad

It comes with 3 USB Ports 2 rear 1 side and that is sufficient. I use a mini-hub on the rear for other accessories.( Wireless Mouse, Card Reader, Etc)

The sound is ok from the internal speakers, but I have amplified speakers on my desk and use them for most sound functions.

All in All I was pleasantly surprised by this laptop. The only downside I have noticed is the fan noise. The fan seems to run a lot even with very little processing activity, but it is not unbearable.

The sound is very good for the size of the speakers, but not as good as a Bose radio we have. The major fault I find is with the radio reception. It does not pick up the more distant signals that our Bose radio easily picks up. The CD and Tape mechanisms seem to function well, but only time will tell regarding long-term reliability. The 3-mode equalizer is limited to Rock (high and low frequency ranges), Pop (voice and mid-range frequencies), and Jazz (emphasis on the low range frequencies). Overall, this unit is an adequate sound system for those not demanding the highest sound quality and not requiring static-free reception of the weaker AM and FM radio signals.

The picture shown is an "Authentic Nintendo Controller"... when you receive it... it is an offbrand. Not even the color stated! Seller said that it was Amazon's fault and not his, that he did not enter that picture. Said that it would cost too much for him to absorb cost to ship back. Was forced to buy at lower price.

I arguably know that colors just make the most of a person, but they can simply also be said for the styles of a video game comtroller as well. Nintendo really does know a thing about the design of a great controller with their Gamecube controller in the simple blue color. The controller is a simple, straight forward controller that is absolutely easy to operate and very helpful in manuvering through games like Super Mario Sunshine, the thrilling Need For Speed Underground 2, and the space capers of the the dynamic Star Fox Assault just to name a few. Although you can get a controller from a third-party company like Pelican or Datel, you arguably might habe something that won't carry through very well. If you want to actually ace through the games for the Gamecube, stick with Nintendo, and the destiny of the cube is yours.

This is way better than the MadCatz series. MadCatz just try to make the controller look good but it is mostly about how the controller feels and the Nintendo origanal controller is the right thing. It is shaped perfectly and does not get stuck MadCatz. This is a great controller!!!

This card is awesome for the price. No rebates needed. I have an Audiovox PPC 4100 Phone edition that would lock up everytime I tried to make a call. I thought something was wrong with the phone/ pocket pc itself but after I upgraded to the memory stick all problems dissapeared. Super fast write/ read. Definately recommed this product.

Considering that this isn't the most advanced memory card on the planet it does a very good job. I use it to store music for my handheld computer. I have nearly 250 songs on, with room for about another 25 or so before it runs out of memory. It works without any problems when connected to my handheld or my desktop. It was worth the money for what I use it for.
