Archos Gmini 400 experience.......2007-02-28
I like my archos 400.
Actually, I think Archos makes a better portable video player than Apple.
I've purchased both Ipod 30gig video and Archos Gmini 400.
I think my Archos hardware performed better, but here comes the negative:
Archos software is terrible
Archos technical support is terrible
Well with that said you understand why I purchased the Ipod.
Someday Archos will correct these problems, in the mean time buy
a ipod.
garbage.......2007-02-04
I BOUGHT THIS ITEM BECAUSE I DIDNT WANT TO BUY AN IPOD.
This item is garbage.
Its slow and more difficult to use.
It ended up breaking one week after warranty was up and the customer service is HORRIBLE.
I asked them how could I retrieve the data in the unit and they were clueless.
They then asked me to send it in so they could give me a a quote to fix my item, however they told me they would reformat it and i would loose all my data ( which was not an option)
The tech support people sound like they have no idea what they are talking about and sound less elequant than a 16 yr old drive through windom attendant at white castle.
Garbage.......2006-08-12
I bought the Gmini400 because i did not want to follow the whole Ipod Trend and because it seemed to have a lot of great features. First few weeks of owning the device I was thoroughly impressed. However, these feelings soon began to fade. The Gmini's joypad style controls are very inconvient for browsing through 20 GB of music. It would tkae a few minutes sometimes jut to get to the artist I wanted. I also noticed a significant lag time when switching from song to song. These were just some of the minor inconviences. About a month into owning the device It stopped taking music off my computer. It would get to the point where i could not transfer more than one song at a time because it would say there was an error. Also, i began to notice problems with the playback. I would be listening to a song and it would cut out in the middle and then start playing another song for a few seconds and then switch back. On top of all this the headphone jack began to give out. I'd have to jiggle the headphones around just so i could hear any sound. I tried all different types of headphones on it too se eif they worked (including my bose quiet comfor 2's) and they all didnt work. I called archos and was on hold for a real long time to find out there was an internal problem with the hardrive and the headphone jack. They said they were going to write up the maintenance order form thing and email to me but it never came. I called again and they confirmed again they needed to send it however it never came even though i gave them another email. After finally being pushed over the edge i gave up on the gmini and bought an Ipod video. I am thoroughly pleased with the Ipod and would never go back to an Archos mp3 player. save you rmoney on this and any of the Gmini series and buy an ipod video.
Gmini 400 or iPod?.......2006-02-15
This is a review from a 16 year old that has owned it since August 05.
I'm sure you've probably read other reviews and have seen the pros and cons of this item. This is truly a great item, no doubt about it. To add, the pros definatley outweigh the cons.
+ Music, pictures, games, data, AND video
+ Fast, easy transfer- no programs needed such as iTunes.
+ Ability to record
+ Displays album art, sometimes
+ Well above average audio quality
+ Nice convinent play will impress your friends
+ Usable while charging
+ Decent battery life
+ Updates are available
- When recording, it records the clicking sound when you press the record off button
- The 'back' button takes you to the top level instead of just taking you back one level, unless you use the 'parent' button, which is too out of reach for my comfort
- It sometimes pauses while you search for a song or whatever for the hard drive to run
- When, for example, you listen to music and the screen shuts off, and you push a button to turn the screen back on, the screen takes a few seconds to turn back on
- There are no good cases available, and this is pretty fragile (I dropped mine twice and have 2 dents in the metal) Take good care of it.
Now, I'm guessing you are deciding wether to get this or an iPod. While iPods are nice looking and seems to hold together really well, I've heard they have problems with their batteries after a while, but I don't have one so I can't confirm that.
All in all, it depends on wether you want everything this has to offer, or if you're just looking for something to listen to music on. If you just want music, go iPod. They look nicer, and have that nice scroll wheel for an all nice looking product. If you're planning to use all the features, then get this obviously. Sure, it doesn't look as nice, or isn't as popular, and doesn't have a shiny blue bar when changing the volume, but most of the time it's going to be in your pocket, right?
its da bomb.......2005-09-21
since i purchased the gmini its been nothing but solid fun, it has the features i wanted, video playback is awesome, rock solid looks, when i have the chance im getting the bigger size one!!!
it rocks for sure!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Good sound, but uncomfortable........2004-06-13
I'm a big fan of Aiwa products, but these headphones disappointed me considerably. The earbuds are pretty uncomfortable and difficult to fit completely into the ear, so I could only judge the quality of the sound from halfway in my ear. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but if that IS the case, why are they so hard to put in? Plus, the shape of the headphones is deceiving because the curved part (that is supposed to fit snuggly around the ear) goes underneath the ear instead of on top, so they never fit properly on my head.
I will deal with them, though, because I am not going to buy another pair. And people do tell me I have a freakishly small head, so maybe it's just me.
Very nice..........2002-05-23
These are the best inexpensive... (under 50 bucks) headphones I have used. They are very comfortable because they fit in your ears and do a good job of completely blocking outside noise.
Not bad .... I suppose.......2002-01-15
These where obviously designed for small people or teenagers in mind since the things wouldn't fit around the back of my head. Personally I find it amusing that these companies seem to think only teenagers or ity-bity people buy products. They sounded great when I put the on backwards. But since I looked ...[bad] I gave them to my Kid.

Spend more money.......2007-01-09
Small size, light weight, and easy to use don't make up for poor picture quality and especially poor lighting (even in a well lit room). I'll be returning this asap.
Fun for the kids!.......2006-02-21
I purchased this camera (2 of them) for my kids (ages 14 & 15)as their first digital camera. They are having a lot of fun with them. My daughter has figured out how to put the pictures she takes on her "MySpace". It does not have auto focus.
Great little camera.......2005-02-04
Overall this digital camera is great for novice users. The camera is very easy to use because of its well-labeled parts and simple menus. With all of the features and for the price, the pictures and movies are great. The only problems that I have found are that the camera has no flash, there are beeps when turning it on that will not shut off in any menu, and without a memory card it does not hold very many pictures. In the end, this is a great, cheep camera for low level to mid level users.
Excellent Digital Camcorder.......2005-02-03
I have loved this digital camcorder from the first time I used it. For the size it is, it is an awfully good camera. It has many features, like a video recorder, voice recorder, digital still camera, and can be used as a webcam. This product takes very good pictures, if you are in good lighting. If you aren't the pictures may be hard to see. Seeing as there is no flash you have to have light in the background. If you want to be able to take for than 16 pictures at a time I suggest you get a compact flash memory card to hold them on. Also same thing for movies, to take a lone movie you have to have a memory card, there isn't enough memory built into the system to be able to take a long movie. Another thing is the battery runs out fast, if you goes low while you are using the camera your pictures may not be saved. So make sure you watch the amount of power in the batteries before it is to late. I guess you can say you get what you pay for seeing as this is an inexpensive camera. Overall, this camera is great if you have good lighting, a memory card, and long lasting batteries.
good buy.......2005-01-01
Like it---get a set of Ni-Mh batteries and a large memory card and enjoy. Don't leave the screen on always--ALL digitals will eat batteries driving the screen full-time.Does need good lighting. A small modification lets it do GREAT macro (close-ups)--I can fill a frame with an ant!.Took pic of screw threads (10-32 size screw). No, it's not a $300.00 resolution camera, but you didn't pay $300.00 for it either. I keep mine in the car.If it breaks, I will buy another--have really used mine.

SV221MICRO.......2006-11-16
Device did not support the mouse scroll wheel on any of 4 mice on hand. I contacted the manufacturer who stated that it does support the mouse wheel function. They replaced it with a new unit at no cost (very good service). It did not work either. They claim it only supports basic mouse functions. A two button Microsoft IntelliMouse is a basic mouse at this point. They stated that since the new unit works the same the device is performing properly. I would have to try another mouse (not so good support). What a joke. I returned it and purchased a D-Link KVM-121, which works great and includes switched audio. The D-Link unit demonstrated that the Startech unit really is a piece of junk. I got to pay shipping both ways (and maybe restocking fees too) to find that out. Lucky me. Its hard to blame the seller. It is not their product, but the unit does not work within reasonable expectations.

- High-resolution audio bandwidth

- Tape output with monitor function; External processor loop
- Bass, treble, and balance adjustment controls
ASIN: B000BIW1AS |
Product Description
The Adcom GFP-715 Stereo Preamplifier delivers sonic performance that would have previously cost you two to three times more. The wide bandwidth analog preamplifier has high quality precision components, like high quality 1% metal film resistors. A high quality phono stage accepts signals from Moving Magnet and High Output Moving Coil phono cartridges, allowing the listener to enjoy their favorite analog recordings. The External Processor Loop allows for easy integration into a high-end home theater system. The Class "A" analog amplifier stages, universally acknowledged as the best sounding amplifier design. Direct coupling capacitors, for the clearest, most open, and detailed sound.
The front panel is intuitively inviting yet allows full and accurate control of up to six sources. A precision motorized volume control provides accurate channel balance, low noise, and low distortion. An internal high current amplifier provides sufficient drive for headphones to allow for private listening. Dual infrared outputs and remote extension jacks allow for easy integration with other remote controlled units and infrared repeater systems.
Separate MAIN and BYPASS amplifier outputs offer you a significant choice. Using the MAIN outputs allows the audio signal to feed through the tone controls, filters, and output coupling capacitors, while the BYPASS output maintains ultimate signal integrity by omitting all but the absolutely essential circuitry.
An over-sized, low output impedance power supply contributes to outstanding musical dynamics.
The technology and sound quality offered in the GFP-715 preamplifier ensures maximum performance and listener enjoyment for many years to come.

Replacement.......2007-03-27
The Adcom GFP-715 sounds good to me. I have an Adcom GFA-545 amplifier and Martin Logan Clarity speakers. When my right channel stopped working on my Adcom GTP-400, I sent it to a place for repair. After spending $150 the repair only lasted a month. I decided to go without a tuner and buy the GFP-715.
I am happy with the listening to the stereo reproduction of musical performances. Although I have found audio cables can make a big difference(kind of off the subject). I put together some mu metal audio cables and they make a definite difference in listening to a piece of music.
So from someone who would spend the extra effort to make his own audio cables, but obviously cannot afford the high end stuff, the GFP-715 is a good preamp.
649 dollar Dissapointment.......2006-09-29
Im a moderate technophile who long ago brought into the audiophile audio component philosophy - dedicated electronics for each essential function in the audio delivery stream. And although my audio budget has not been of the caliber to purchase a system that would impress a very serious audio purist, I've always plunked down enough cash to be considered a periphery player in the audio purist game. Performance for the dollar spent has always been my philosophy, hand in hand with my audo purist tendencies. The result has been my present "old school" audio system that has remained with me for a awhile, the guts consisting of a pair of dennon poa4400 mono amps, genesis 210 speakers, and a carver c2 preamp. The audio sources arent as significant because they have come and gone over the years - various cd players, tape decks, and other audio source starts and fits over the years (remember dat players), and even some of the new school formats such as mp3 and successors. Despite these various audio sources, the guts of my audio system remained with the aforementioned dual mono amps, speakers, preamp, and even a yamaha tuner that have been the heart of my audio system over the years.
That said, I've always considered my pre-amp to be sonically adequate but with many feature shortcomings. The biggist shortcoming being the Carver has only a single source input. Yes, there are dedicated phono and tape inputs, but there is an input for only one other source. Probably adequate for the the average audiophile demands a couple of decades ago. But not of contemporary times. I overcame this shortcoming with a Niles source switcher. This was very elemental but effective in allowing several source inputs through the Carver preamp. This worked with good results for awhile. But recently I figured it was time to update my audio system and I was going to start with my pre-amp.
I came across the Adcom 715. It seemed to fit my requirements. Good brand name, all the basic features that I needed (several source inputs, bypass and main output, external processor capability), and at a price at less than a grand. but not a cheap pre-amp. I thought this was the way to go. Especially since my Carver preamp was more than twenty five years older than this Adcom. I reasoned that technology has certainly advanced such that the Adcom 715 had to be a least sonically on par with my Carver - conceived over 30 years ago. In fact the Adcom surely had to be even better than my old Carver. WRONG!! The Adcom sounded bland and even tinny as compared with my old Carver. Somehow the musical spectrum generated from the speakers was not as expansive with the Adcom 715 as compared with my old Carver. And vocals were not as life like. I dont know what the deal is with the Adcom. But Im returning it forthwith and going back to my old Carver for now. I cannot recommend this preamp.
