Best deal for laser.......2007-09-14
I believe this is the best bang for a Laser Printer. Do not expect top quality prints. Compared to other Laser printers I had before I find that the prints are less quality, they are not as crisp; maybe its the resolution, I dont know, so compare it before making a decision. Also it is more loud than other printers, but well that might not be so important if it does the job. Happy so far for the cheap price.

Really don't want to waste time to comment this printer. Trash! returned it and they will charge me $32 for shipping. Do some research work and carefully evaluate your items before ordering from Amazon!

I'm giving it 3 stars provisionally, will revise if needed, based on my excellent experience with Brother printers, but my annoyance that they do not include a basic USB cable in the box (would have cost them about $1 extra, but will cost you $5-10 at least, and a bit of hassle).
You will need a USB 2.0 A/B cable (e.g., check out a Startech item that Amazon sells for about $6). You can use a parallel cable if you must, but USB should give you better performance in general, besides being easier to connect.
What a Pile.......2007-08-27
How did this thing get to 4 stars. Did anybody who bought this use it. I've had this one for about a year now and have hated it for the last 12 months. It will either jam the paper for real, tell you it has a paper jam with nothing stuck in it, or crinkle the paper so it will stand on edge. The print quality isn't anything to brag about either. I guess if you print one page a day you might be happy with this printer but if you print much at all stay away very far away!
Very Good, Basic Laser Printer for Home Office.......2007-08-23
I bought this printer to replace my HP Laserjet Series II that I purchased new in 1988. I doubt that I will get 19 years out of this one, however, it turns out to be a very good little basic monochrome printer. Having both the Centronics and the USB port for connectivity allowed me to replace it right in where the HP used to be on my wireless printserver without changing any of my "legacy" configuration or I could move it to a USB configuration if needed.
The time to print the first page can be a little long, but once this printer gets going it is reasonably quick. The first toner cartridge that came with the printer is still hanging in there pretty well with near daily use for about a month.
It can be a quite tricky lining up a manual feed page to go through square and straight. If I want a letter on letterhead to come out parallel to the edges of the page, I usually open the paper tray and let it go through the conventional path. Envelopes through the manual feed are just too crumpled by the time they feed through the entire paper feed path to the output bin. I've had no problem feeding through label stock or even the half-label/half-paper shipping labels provided by my shipping company.
I'm pretty happy with this - it's a considerable upgrade from the printer I'm replacing in terms of resolution and speed. However, I certainly don't have any illusions or expectations that this product is as durable as the behemoth tank that it replaced.

Love this printer, but ..........2006-10-27
I haven't run into any of the problems mentioned by a few reviewers. I love the speed and quality of this printer for the price. It's worked very well with both text and images. And upgrading the memory was a piece of cake, and well worth doing.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that, after you've printed PLENTY of pages, it starts hassling you about the toner cartridge. That is, it won't print even when the pages are still coming out with plenty of toner. I keep having to fiddle with it just to get out another few pages. And YES, I am using a Brother toner cartridge and not some "compatible" cartridge.
I would appreciate having it tell me when I'm low on toner, but don't like that it keeps me from printing when the pages still look good. Now, off to order a toner cartridge. ...
Good priner possible failure prone.......2006-10-11
During my first year of use this pritner was good to very good I used it for light office printing, maybe 5- 10 pages a day. At about 13 months just out of warranty it failed. Brother was unable to fix it. This was while it was still on its first toner cartridge (original one that came with it. I think it would be a fine pinter If you buy a 2 or 3 year warranty. Also the manual paper feed rarely worked but usually jammed or failed to take the paper and print to it. Maybe i should have given it 2 stars but it was a good printer for 1 year and with the way things are made today and for the price paid this is what we should expect I guess. Im going to get a Brother 5140 but im going to buy that waranty just in case. I also have had a HP 2600N color laser which after a few months of use is great but kind of slow at only 8 pages a minute or less.
Excellent for the money.......2006-10-10
I've owned four of these for a business we run. The print quality issues are easily solved by visiting Brother's Web site. It's usually something as simple as replacing the toner (when it's out), cleaning the drum with a Q-tip, etc.
Worst printer I have ever owned.......2006-09-18
My old HP Laserjet 4L worked for about 15 years. In fact it is still working today (I have never needed to replace the drum on it, btw). My Brother 1440 lasted 8 months.
It was quite nice when it was working - fast with good quality text. But that nice quality text goes down quite a bit when your entire page is smudged and streaked. It was sometimes so bad you couldn't read the text and my printouts resembled a bad photocopy.
Like many others, I will never own a "Brother anything" again. In fact I recently traded in this piece of junk to HP as part of HP's 2006 fall laser printer trade-in program, and got $75 towards a nice HP laser. So I guess the Brother did come in useful after all...
Great Laster Printer!.......2006-08-04
I've had this printer for many years. I'm not a real heavy printer, but when I've got a large print job, this printer is a workhorse. It is pretty quick to come out of sleep mode, and I've never had a single paper jam. That's more than I can say for many of the HP's I've used over the years.
The memory was very easy to upgrade. I do wish it had a larger capacity paper tray, but considering I paid less than a hundred bucks for this printer that is a very minor issue.
One of my favorite aspects of this printer is that it is very well supported in Linux, and even the Windows drivers don't load up your system with useless, memory-hogging utilities.
The build quality is surprisingly good, without being too heavy.
I highly recommend this printer.

Brother HL 1440 Laser Printer.......2007-03-17
I have used this laser printer since 2003. I print about 150 pages per month. In all that time, I have had one paper jam and I use the cheapest paper I can find. Though
I have used two toner cartridges but there is no sign of drum wear.
I would not hesitate to buy a remanufactured
Brother 1440. I might add that Brother is just great about answering technical questions fast and free,despite the fact that I bought the machine four years ago. The only down side is the machine's size.

I've had this printer for over a year. It's fast enough to get the job done, the quality is great for text, and most importantly, I still haven't had to replace toner. My roommates have color printers, and always have to print to mine, because they've run out of ink.
Exceeds Expectations.......2006-05-19
I would highly recommend this printer. For the price, you can't beat it. Set up was super easy, the pages look great and it's relatively quiet.
My only knock is that there doesn't seem to be a way to do a wireless set-up without using a proprietary Brother adapter or router. (I did some research - enough to be disheartened.) And I so wanted to use an Airport Express, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make it work with this model.

This is the best workhorse laser printer you can buy for the money. Forget all the more expensive brands. I've never had a problem with the HL 1440, in fact I've bought two so far. The first one I gave to a friend when I moved but a year later I bought another one for myself. Remanufactured is good as new. It sits on my desk and my cat sleeps on it.

Sure I could have gotten a basic laser printer for less money, but $100 is a good choice. Plus I can get my hands on the toner cartridges and drums for free for this printer, so you can see why I paid extra for it.
So far it has worked flawlessly. FOr what I need done it's the perfect answer. I did go ahead and upgrade the memory for around $12.00.
