Images are great. I purchased 3 webcams to use with laptop computers. Only problem is with the adjustment when mounted on the laptop display. A previously purchased unit can be easily adjusted while these units are too loose and can't be adjusted. The screw that controls the adjustment is tightened all the way but the unit "flops" to the full open position.

The claws are supposed to let you fix it to a laptop. Unfortunately, the grip is not steady. The rubber studs came off and it got worse from there on. It was one hand on the camera and one hand of the keyboard from the on.

Just when you thought all webcams were created equal, along comes the Creative Live! Cam Optia AF--the first webcam to offer an autofocus lens and a ceiling-busting 2-megapixel resolution. The Optia AF offers easy plug-and-play operability on either a Windows PC or a Mac--just slide in the USB 2.0 plug, select the camera from your chosen video chatting program (it works seamlessly with Skype, Yahoo!, Windows Live, SightSpeed, and iChat), and you're good to go. The Optia's autofocus feature gets engaged whenever you make movements more pronounced than just moving your head from side to side--the picture mildly blurring for about a second before it adjusts to a crisper focus. We found it best not too move too much, otherwise the picture tended to constantly adjust itself, which was frustrating for our chat partner.
However, our chat pal did notice that the colors from the Optia AF were much richer when compared to a test we did with the Apple iSight (see images at right), and that the flow of video was smoother with the Optia's 30fps (frames per second) capture. He also noted that my voice seemed to come in clearer, thanks to the dual adaptive array microphones.
While the Optia AF works as advertised right out of the box, you'll benefit from installing the Creative software package, which includes the Cam Console from which you can make a wide range of adjustments. (Note that this software is available for Windows users only; it's also Vista-certified.) From the Autofocus section of the console, you can specify a focus area from an Advanced menu that will help cut down on refocusing, or choose to manually focus on one point if you're going to be more stationary.
Add special effects such as crocodile eyes, which will follow your face around the screen.

The Cam Console is also where you can select from a host of special effect add-ons that range from draping a background around you (such as the Eiffel Tower) or adding elf ears or crocodile eyes, which will follow your face as you move. Unfortunately, it seemed we needed a green screen behind us as we could never get the backgrounds to fully form. But we were much more successful with the facial additions and such whole-scale manipulations as half-tone and mirror image.
The included CD-ROM also includes Muvee Autoproducer software, which can help you stitch together a movie from different clips captured from the Optia AF, as well as Orb, which enables you to broadcast your video feed to a Web page that friends and family can check in on. Coupled with the Optia AF's parental controls, the Orb service could be handy for parents who want to remotely check in on what their tykes are up to in another room, or back at home with a babysitter.
Like its predecessor, the Optia AF's stand can sit freely upon a desk or older CRT monitor, and the rubber grips on the bottom help to keep it from slipping. A clip is included on the bottom to stabilize the stand on your laptop's screen or LCD monitor, making the Optia one of the most secure webcams we've used. You can twist the black high-gloss camera body around 270 degrees, and the image automatically flips when it's rotated more than 90 degrees. Adding to its stylish looks is an inner ring that lights up in blue when the camera is turned on. Swiveling the lens so it's pointing down turns the camera off for when you need privacy.
Overall, the Optia AF is a welcome advance to to the world of webcams, thanks to its sharper focus, richer colors, and clearer audio. But it's also chock-full of extras that will add fun to your chats with family and friends. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Great camera for Skype and MacOS X.......2007-08-21
I have an Apple MacPro system running MacOS X 10.4, and I wanted a setup that allows me to use Skype with video and sound. Initially, I thought I need to get a video camera, a microphone and speakers separately.
Since the Optia AF has not only a video camera, but also a built-in microphone, I decided to give it a try. I was more than impressed with the ease of use of setting it up: just plug it in a USB port, start up Skype, tell it to use the USB video camera and the USB audio device and everything works perfectly. No need to install any software, it worked out-of-the-box. The camera works great with iChat and PhotoBooth applications too, again without installing additional software.
Autofocus is fairly fast in a well lit room, and if you don't move suddenly in front of the camera. As you start moving the camera tends to hunt the focus a little bit, but that's something I'd expect from such cameras.
Colors are fairly saturated and the image has good contrast. I like the colors a lot better than those generated by the tiny cameras embedded within the latest generation of iBooks, when used in similar light conditions. The Optia AF is also much better in low light than those cameras, with less grain and better colors.
Sound quality is very good. I don't get any echoes even with the computer' speaker close to the camera's microphone. The sound on the other side is natural, without artifacts. The camera's built-in microphone is great, since my desk space is not cluttered with one more thing I need to worry about (wires, additional USB port or line-in, etc).
The camera fits very well on an Apple Cinema display, and could be easily oriented to frame you. When the camera is in use, a blue light turns on to indicate it. The camera can be rotated in a position that prevents it from turning on, thus providing privacy when you need it.
The only feature missing is the ability to zoom in or out manually, but I don't think it's crucial. The camera's focal length is chosen very well for Skype-type applications (it appears to be the 35mm equivalent of 35mm cameras).
I don't have experience setting this up on Windows, but if you're on Mac, I'd highly recommend this camera.
The driver crashed my operating system.......2007-07-16
The original CD and latest Optia AF driver from their website will crash the window xp. Without the creative driver, the cam will work with window xp but not auto focus. I have send mail to creative to report this problem, they replyed me in 3 days but without any working solution.

This Cam is GREAT, at least compared to a Logitech Quick Cam. I also had a Intel Webcam Pro, which was a awesome cam, but the drivers do NOT work for Windows Vista. That's why I bought the Logitech Quick Cam, but it went back the next day, it was terrible, and wasn't worth the low price I paid for it. The Creative Live Cam Optia AF is a bit pricey, but I still think it is worth the extra money. The setup is simple, and I haven't even tried half of the bells and whistles from the software yet. There is only one problem that I found with the Creative Cam, and that is when I first plug in the cam, the video is very dark, so what I have to do is click on the "outdoor" setting and the color comes alive, then I can change it back to "Auto" "white balance" in the Live Cam Console settings, which is no big deal to do, just a pain. It also takes nice snap shots at 3200x2400- 1600x1200-1280x960-640x 480-and 320x240. With the built in microphone this cam is a winner!
It rocks on a Mac...........2007-06-28
Plugged it in on my Mac and it rocks... better video quality than my logitech. AutoFocus is great, people have commented on the better quality of the video.
no problems whatsoever. And people have said that the sound quality is less "speakerphone" than the logitech, even with the chat output going to my stereo (with speakers on either side of the mike). Clip works great on my LCD monitor. am going to buy a 2d one for the downstairs machine. it's actually more compact than the pictures make you think. another plus point.
only down side is the software is evidently only for windows, so can't get any fun with that. but for the camera and the microphone performance, it's worth the money.
Software crashes!.......2007-06-17
I decided to buy this webcam as an upgrade to my new Logitech. The Logitech webcam worked but the software only outputs at 15 fps and wmv (I want avi). I emailed Logitech and they said that this is all their software supported.
The software install for this Creative webcam is long and complicated. When I try to use the software I get a notice to report the error to Microsoft and the computer locks up. If I do not use the software but leave the webcam plugged in I hear the Windows sound of the device constantly connecting and disconnecting. This stops when I unplug the webcam. I wrote support and they blamed my computer, which is high end and runs everything else.
I actually prefer the Logitech QuickCam Orbit MP camera itself. It is heavier with a solid base that stays in place.
I do not know why both companies cannot provide good software that works. It is pitiful that they are making good cameras with software that is unusable.

This webcam is worth the money. The installation was easy, it sits well on my laptop screen and is stable. Just not satisfied with the colours rendered by this camera, the image tends to become more monochromatic and sepia like sometimes. Resolution is good, pictures taken from this WEBCAM are good, clear enough for putting on the internet without editing and resizing. The software comes with a bunch of features with video recording feature, which is good. Overall, a good camera worth 4 stars.

The quality of this camera is so outdated. The pixels did not fully show and you'll see a picture of some hill. really weird stuff... Really bad in low lighting. Spend a little more on a better cam. I recommend Microsoft Vx-3000.

The Creative Live! Video IM is a great buy. But, you don't really need to install the CD to use it with MSN or Yahoo messenger. The setup was not good for me. One of the drivers that i needed was not installed on my computer and it wasnt on the CD either. But, other than that i love this product. Its worth the money.

i do not have anything to compare this web cam to, but so far, we love this thing...
we recently move 3 states away from our family and friends. So we decided to try out the web cam (along with Skype). So far we have had no problems with it at all. We even have it hooked up to a laptop via a wireless dsl connection. the image is pretty clean, although i think it would be better if we had it plugged in directly.
i haven't used it for anything other than video calls with other skype users, but it comes bundled with software that looks fun.
I would recommend this cam to anyone based solely on the video chat feature...
Another excellent camera from Creative Labs........2007-07-23
I still use a Live Motion Camera from Creative and I purchased this Optia camera for my second system. It does work without any drivers, but most people will want to load the drivers for full functionality. With the latest drivers and software from the Creative site, the Optia camera produces excellent image quality especially for it's price point. The Optia is also very stylish and just looks good. The included software bundle and control software is very nice as well and includes lots of useful features. Highly recommended.

The software upgrade on their site improved greatly the exposure and white light balance. Great software, lots of tricks for video fun, still not the best for sending closeups of small objects, but great for all around photos and video. The focus works well, happy camper here.

I purchased this cam for a friend who is not able to install drivers on that particular system, because its advertised as truly Plug & Play...no need for drivers. While that's true IF and only IF you want to take still pictures with the camera and not using it for anything else. Conferencing on Yahoo, MSN, or any other IM program does require installation of 2 different programs to run the camera. I tried plugging the cam into a USB 2.0 PCI expansion card which gave very bad images. Aside from it really needing drivers and the Cam Optia Suite or whatever installed, video quality is excellent. Details really show up nicely, the face tracking is a nice feature, but more often than not zooms up on the brightest object around instead. It's a great cam for the money, but it does have a few minor flaws...especially the somewhat misleading "driverless installation." If it could be used with the popular IM programs without any drivers, and the face tracking was a little more refined, I'd definitely give this a 5 star rating.

Works great .. unless you load the CD.......2007-07-15
Great picture quality and good face-tracking for the price. The problem starts when you try to follow instructions and load the CD and ... Oops! your system suddenly freezes. I have seen it everytime when I use a machine that has the "drivers" loaded. However, on other machine (using Windows native drivers) it works just fine.

This is a very cute stuff regarding to the size and design. The quality of picture is superior duo to the Smart Face Tracking and , (the most important) CCD sensor, which allows experiencing superior video with vibrant colors, and sharper, clearer images than CMOS sensor webcams even in dim light;
The only thing I feel a little bothers me is the 76 degree wide-view-lens. It makes feature somehow distortion, though give you a field of view that is 50% more than regular lens. As a tool for web communication to the common user, I don't think wide-view-lens is really necessary.

Unfortunately, I am one of those who are unable to get this camera to work properly. It seems that if you have an HP or Toshiba notebook, this will never work and it is useless to contact Creative for driver updates or for any help. Just return it or buy a different webcam. Also one poster said it may be due to the ATI chipset which both of my computers have so this may be true.
For those that did have it installed correctly, congrats. Now, I have to buy a new webcam. I've had success with Logitech products in the past so that's what I will get next time.
bad product, bad service, please don't waste your time and money!.......2007-05-29
this is a bad product at best. i have successfully and happily used a creative webcam in the past, but this one is beyond disappointing. i bought it for my 17 inch toshiba satellite notebook and after a couple of sketchy hangups i got the drivers installed. but upon connecting the camera, all i ever could get was a "usb device not recognised" error message. i went through all the hoops i could think of (and then some) but it didn't change a thing.
then a google took me straight to creative technologies OWN website message boards and i found out i was not by any means the only one experiencing this frustrating situation. not only would i warn people away from this product, a previously contented creative webcam user will NEVER buy from them again.
please save yourself time, frustration, and money -- buy a different notebook camera!

It's a NOTEBOOK cam.......2007-07-20
Just got this new cam the other day, had to replace my old GE cam, not compatible with Vista :( . - And what a difference it makes!!! Clear, sharp pics, no jagging (have the face tracking OFF) and no lag (well you can adjust fast or better pic quality). Does not come with a mic, but headset (cheap one though) is included. Install was a piece of cake (and I am nowhere near being an IT pro). Only con: the advance video fx utility does not work really, but I don't need that anyway.
It's handy, has a pouch to carry around, love the short cable (it IS meant for a notebook!!!) and the clip is tight enough for my Acer laptop. The focus is easy to set, but I did not install the extra picture editing software, have no need for that!
Overall: You'll get what you pay for, and for $15 there is really NO reason to complain!!!!

This is a really nice looking little web cam but that's about the only positive thing I can say about it.
The picture quality isn't very good and when you're talking the lips don't sync with the video.
I have a much older web cam made my Logitec that works much better and has much better sound.
It also took a long time to install the software and after installation it had to download and install updates which didn't seem to improve the performance at all.

I love the picture quality. It's quite clear and sharp - better than more expensive webcams that I have seen. It isn't fuzzy in the slightest. However, when using it over the internet (as most folks do with webcams), the lag is rather bad. If you speak, for example, you'll see your lips move a good 30 seconds to a minute or so later. Though, it does come with this spiffy "Orb" feature. You can quite easily set it up so that you can see pictures on your webcam from any internet connected computer at any time, or set it to alert you via email if anything moves in the room it's in. Also, the little clip holds the webcam on a laptop quite securely, and though it doesn't turn left or right, you can easily place it left or right on the laptop. Overall, I'm quite pleased with it.

It's small and the picture quality is ok. One main problem is the video lag, but that might be with all 15 fps cameras. I hate the fact that it needs all this installation software though. It should just plugin and work, especially with Vista. Bundled software and unnecessarily complicated drivers annoy me. Also the clip is too small, I have a thinkpad t60 and it's not big enough to fit over the top edge. I'm going to return it.
No autofocus - poor picture quality.......2007-02-07
third party software bundle rquires two resident programs sitting in you memory (it will get during installation into your system registry and load every time you start your PC) they say it's free of charge but as you know there is only free cheese in mousetrap.
major cons is not existing autofocus. tiny focus adjusting ring is awkward to operate and at the end you still can't quite put it in sharp focus.
cable is like 1.5 ft long. i guess it's ok for laptop but if you wanna use it for something else - just forget it, clip is also good for laptop screen only and not for anything else.
automatic light adustement is just plain sucks. manual is a bit better but if you have to re-adjusted evry time you wanna use your webcam it becomes pain in the a**.
i have two a4tech cheapper webcams without any third party useless software and with autofocus and they are way better than creative. SHAME ON YOU CREATIVE! i thought you could do better!

Webcam does not get detected most of times. Even though it is detected, the webcam does not show the picture. System has to be restarted to show up the picture.

Bad experience with Creative web-cams in the past ..........2007-06-22
I bought a creative webcam in 2003 that kind of resembled a snail shell. It was total garbage! Slow responses times, hardly ever took a "stable" picture (mostly blurry), did not have good light response, and didn't even rotate! This was supposed to be a webcam that could also be a portable digital camera. Ha! Not so much. I paid $100 through Amazon for this Creative Web-Cam. I did not know that this camera was garbage and I was so frustrated that I never tried to return it for a refund -- I just suffered with it's inadequacy. Two years earlier, I bought an Intel webcam through Dell for $48. It worked great -- it even swiveled, and made movies! Only $48! So why is Creative making garbage for $100? Maybe they have improved in 4 years? I don't know. Karma always comes back around, so this is my report and caveat to people about my experience with a garbage webcam bought from Creative.
Great camera, great audio quality.............2007-05-19
I'm not sure why the other reviewers are not having the same excellent experience that I am having with my Voice camera. The installation was easy, the image is clear and the directional live audio feature that they have, works great.
When I video caht with my friend, he says that the image is clear and the frame rates are fine. Also, if there are others around, the directional live audio feature only picks up my voice. The software bundle is very good compared to the other cameras out there.
Overall, I'm very happy with my camera and highly recommend it.

I think the webcam is really good because is easy to install, have high quality video,the software is very good, works in all sorts of light conditions, works very well in Windows XP and linux UBUNTU 7.04 with msn messenger and skype.

Overall a high quality webcam that produces excellent image despite the poorly lit room where it is located. The smart tracking that suppose to keep you in the center of the frame regardless of your movements does not work always as expected. I don't care about that feature that much as the ability to produce a high quality image is more important to me.

Used this product for the past 2 years without any issues. I got it for $25 then. Its no good for desktop PCs, but a great buy for laptops. The video quality is very decent.

This is a cheap, no frills webcam. I bought it specifically because it WAS so cheap and because I wanted a simple webcam to put on my desk at work to act as a spy to see who was going around stealing things off people's desks after hours and I wanted it to be cheap in case what they stole next was my camera.
I think its mere presense did the job of deterrent. It did catch some people eyeballing it suspiciously before wandering off, but neither it nor anything from my desk ever disappeared again.
That said, here's my breakdown:
Included software: Very good. Comes with software "motion detection" which is what I use to record movement around my desk, but also has time lapse and photo modes in addition to actually just being a webcam. There's also some way of setting up the camera to monitor it remotely but the firewall at the office was blocking that function so I haven't tried it.
Camera quality: "Sufficient". Not great. The camera seems to have minor "fits" that will throw glitches on screen once in a great while. This isn't really noticable until you use motion detection. The motion detection function would frequently capture an image of a blank wall doing nothing very exciting and it took me a while to realize that what sets off the motion detection is sometimes just "noise" which I presume to be a result of a poor quality camera. Like it gets a moment of static which trips the motion detection software and it ends up recording a short stint of absolutely nothing happening.
It would also be nice if the motion capture had a small 1 or 2 second buffer so that it will always record the event that tripped it. As it is, sometimes it will also trigger from something going by fast enough that the software gets tripped but doesn't start recording fast enough to catch what tripped it.
The camera's max resolution is pretty low, as well, though I guess that's about on par for web cams. On the bright side, you can record quite a lot of time without taking up a lot of drive space but on the other hand, it's going to be low quality stuff.
Still, not bad for the price. I'm happy enough with it. The plastic stand is nice, too, giving you a decent chance of finding a place to set it or hook it (the bottom "leg" you see in the picture can swing out to act as a claw if need be, e.g., to place on top of a monitor or cubical wall...)
I might even be tempted to call it "5 stars, relative to other cameras you could get for this cheap" but I'll leave it at 4 stars, mainly for those glitches that interfere with motion capture.
You can certainly find a better web cam out there, but if you're looking for something cheap and sufficient, this one will probably do the job.
DON'T BUY IT!.......2007-02-22
This is a piece of junk, especially the software. It hung up twice on trying to install the software, and the video portion got hung up so badly I finally had to simply shut down my computer to turn it loose. I sent it back pronto!

This webcam is good for anyone who wants to skype or IM with video. The resolution is okay and the webcam works pretty well even in poor lighting. The only downside to this product is the software that comes with it. I couldn't get the software to run on my computer even when plugged into the USB 2.0 ports at the back. The software looks nifty but is slow.

I can't believe how generous other reviewers have been in assessing this cam's awful performance. The images are sooooooooo blurry and dull - maybe it works better in very bright light but for normal lighting conditions forget it. I have a 5 year old Intel web cam that works a milion times better than this piece of junk. Some friends of mine in the Philippines just bought a cam from A4Tech for about $15 equivalent and that produces a very nice picture so there is no way one can put this cam's abysmal performance down to low price. Please don't waste your time or money with this terrible cam. I would really have liked to have awarded it no stars whatsoever.
