4 out of 5 stars Works fine for me.......2002-05-03

This player has worked through workouts and trips and continues to play just fine.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good product.......2001-08-24

Well it's a good thing that I had a gift certificate for this item and thus didn't have to pay too much money. The headphones broke (one ear piece stopped working) fairly soon after I got it, which is typical with Aiwa and Sony. Finally, it no longer plays tapes but just the radio. Hmm I think I've had it for a year and a half??

4 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2000-01-28

I am very pleased with this unit. I have tried 3 other casettes players for running and have found that they all skip. This one has worked without skipping whether running, walking, holding the player, or having it hooked to my waist. The headphones could be a bit more comfortable and the sound isn't perfect, but for me and my 2-3 mile runs, it is a keeper!

1 out of 5 stars Cumbersome arm strap...poor reception!.......2000-01-25

Looks pretty, doesn't work well! The strap isn't something you can put on & take off quickly. If I'm moving from one machine to another I don't want to mess around with straps and lose valuable workout time! Reception was poor one day, okay the next? This item could be reworked into something compact and useful instead of cumbersome. I am returning to exchange for the KOSS version. We'll see if that's better.

4 out of 5 stars Finally....A place to put it........1999-12-07

I've really enjoyed this personal headphone stereo/cassette player. Although it is about the same size as other cassette players, it is definitely more convienent. It has a strap that won't allow the radio to fall off when you're working out & a special lock so the cassette is unable to jump around.

You can attach the strap to the bars of treadmills, stairclimbers, your arms, whatever and it will not fall off. If you're one of those exercisers who just cannot workout without that special cassette tape...then this is the perfect headphone cassette player for you.

The sound quality is also great. Like many stereo's there's an extra bass button but these little headphones have a big sound.

    Amazon.com Review

The Aiwa HS-TX481 radio cassette player offers several popular features at an affordable price. Its digital tuner is perfect for frequent travelers who want to receive radio programming while on the go, and its long battery life allows you about 18 hours of listening time (with two AA batteries).

The Aiwa HS-TX481 sports a lightweight design, making it easy to carry during exercise or general use. This tape player contains all the essential features, including fast-forward, rewind, and both single and continuous-loop reverse capabilities.

While the player's slick metallic design is pretty, it might confuse some users. We were particularly perplexed at the hold button, which operates correctly with a turn, rather than a push. Also lacking is a standard radio station scan feature. However, the player does contain an auto-preset feature that scans for available radio stations and automatically configures presets for stations with a strong signal. The unit can hold up to 30 different stations. The HS-TX481 also includes headphones and a detachable belt clip.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sound, Great Value, Uncomfortable Headphones.......2000-03-21

I remember when I bought my first Walkman. It cost about 80 bucks and didn't even have a radio or auto-reverse. This portable stereo has it all and at a very reasonable price. It sounds good too and the microprocessor equalizer control helps you fine-tune the unit for your personal sound preference. The only complaint I have is that the headphones are not very comfortable. I would recommend buying a more comfortable pair of headphones to go with this player.

4 out of 5 stars clear sound, light weight.......2000-01-16

I bought this to listen to tapes on the subway. I was suprised at the high quality of sound from the radio and tape playback. There is minimal background noise. It is also very light weight, making it easy to carry around. The two things I didn't like are the earphones which are large and clumsy, it works better with earplugs, and the volume switch which is low set and sometimes difficult to turn to adjust the volume. Overall I am very satisfied with this product.

    5 out of 5 stars Super Sound.......2000-01-13

This unit can't be beat..great sound & great price. I use it for listening to music, talk radio and books-on-tape and it beats the $60.00 Sony I had on all counts.

    4 out of 5 stars Great deal!.......2000-01-13

I bought this walkman and didn't expect such a great performance from such a cheap walkman. Great sound, slim as an audio cassette. If you're looking for a great deal, this is it!

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific sound!.......2000-01-10

The minute I put this baby on and hit play I was highly impressed at the lovely sound quality. The energy level light for the batteries is a wonderful feature as well as the choice of forward or reverse play without removing the cassette and turning it over. How nice!

I feel I got my money's worth and then some. I will go with this brand when looking for a portable CD player.

1 out of 5 stars Faulty Headphone Jack and Poor Customer Service.......2000-08-15

The product looked nice, but after using the system for a couple of months the headphone jack became loose and affected the sound (after that, I would need to press my thumb against the headphone jack so that the sound wouldn't break-up).

In addition, navigating through AIWA's customer service is almost as bad as dealing with the IRS. It makes their warranty practically worthless.

In my experience, the AIWA products I've owned (one shelf system, and one portable tape player) have functionally lasted about a year or less. Save yourself some money (and more importantly the headache of dealing with their customer service) and buy a Sony or a Pioneer (or anything else) instead.

    2 out of 5 stars A disappointed buyer.......2000-05-24

This is a nice little walkman, the sound is very good the hold feature is nice to prevent accidentally switching stations if you're carrying it in a purse or backpack. The major fault I find with it and the reason I gave it two stars are the headphones, they are very uncomfortable, the foam ear pieces are very thin and actually hurt your ears a bit even though they don't fit closely. Also with the sound down fairly low someone sitting next to me could hear the music quite well, not something you want for a plane trip or sitting on mass transit. I bought this specifically because I liked the idea of having tuning and volume control on a remote on the headphones so I could keep it in my bag and not risk dropping it but the headphones were so bad I wound up using my old pair and foregoing the remote. To bad because it's a nice product except for that.

    5 out of 5 stars Indestructable!.......2002-09-19

I purchased this item with an extended 2 year warrantee through Circuit City. I am a voice performance/opera student and use it to tape lectures and voice lessons.

I have dropped it innumerable times. It has been thrown in a bookbag with overstuffed books over 5 years of undergrad work and now grad. work. I have even used two adaptors at the wrong voltage and fried the adaptors; yet the player works perfectly. One time it hit the ground so hard it partly came apart; but I just gave it a firm 'tap' and it fit back together just right. Other than purely superficial marring, my cassette player/recorder is PERFECT.

My lectures came out clearly enough to be able to study from them, and my voice lessons do not have a significant amount of distortion, so I have a catalog of years of study with fairly high quality recordings (not audition quality obviously).

I am especially fond of the speaker function, where I can play it out loud if I am in private and not have to use headphones. Also, the "pause" function would be great for students like me who don't have time in their lives to baby their stuff; if it goes off in your bookbag, nothing plays or records, it is just in perpetual "pause" and seems to use much less battery power. I also LOVE the battery sensor, which tells you how much battery power you have left.

The only downfalls I can note are that the reverse and fastforward buttons are not marked clearly enough.

It's a handy tool for students. This portable recorder is well equipped for the contemporary student and with the auto reverse/playback capability, it is second-to-none in performance.
I have one, and would like to replace it for my academic use.

Good looking, easy to use, andthe sound is perfect - and I wear hearing aids! The tape recorder works exactly the same as it does on a normal size table model and the playback sounds exactly like the original. Using the microphone was simple with excellent results.I was delighted with my Alwa!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Walkman.......2001-10-30

    INTRODUCTION
    **********************

A few years ago I was looking for a new Walkman as my old one, a very outdated Sony model, had broken. So where do you begin when looking for a Walkman? Well, I personally decided to look in the Argos catalogue for a bargain Walkman made by a brand I could trust. I opted for the same manufacturer as my Hi-Fi, Aiwa, and this attractive little Aiwa HS-TX486 caught my eye at a very affordable price.

    PRICE
    *************

I forget what the price was back then, but now after some research I can tell you that this little gem can now be bought for just £20.00, which is a real bargain, I promise you. I found this price on Amazon, where the Walkman is unfortunately sold out.

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS
    **************************

When the Walkman first arrived I was immediately impressed by the design, and after checking the model to see if there were extra features that hadn't been included in a rather vague catalogue description, I found that indeed there were many more features, which make this in general a very good Walkman, certainly the best I have come across. So what are these features, I hear you ask. Well, I will tell you right now.

    FEATURES
    *****************

In general the Aiwa HS-TX486 has two main features, playing cassettes and playing the radio, but as with most electronic goods there are many more features, many of which prove to be very useful. As I describe the various features I will also describe their position on the unit, so that I don't end up repeating myself by adding a section about the button layout.

    *Cassette Play*

General: The basic cassette playing is as you would expect, it is very easy to insert your cassette, in fact you don't even have to press a button, there is a small groove in the side of the model for you to grip with your thumb as you lift the top face of the unit. It folds open easily not unlike a book, and you can then insert the tape with ease. Once you shut the lid, you will find the normal function buttons on the side of the unit - Play, Stop, Rewind and Fast-Forward.

Auto-Reverse: As well as this, there is a small switch next to the main cassette function buttons. This, if flicked, will reverse the direction the cassette is being played, in other words, it is a convenient way of turning over your tape onto the other side, without actually removing the cassette. What is more useful, however, is that during playback when you reach the end of a side of your tape, if you choose for it to do so, the player will automatically flick that switch and start playing the other side of the tape. In other words, the unit offers Auto-Reverse.

    *Radio*

General: To play radio, press the large BAND button to cycle between AM, FM1, FM2 and Tape plat. That's right, the unit includes FM and AM stereo, why two FM's? ... I'll explain later. For anyone who does not know, AM and MW are the same thing, so if you are looking for Radio 5 Live, for example, it can be found on AM radios like this one as well as MW radios, at the frequency 909 or 693 for those who are interested. Apart from Long Wave Radio (LW) stations, which most people only use for one station - Atlantic 252 - This Walkman has just about every Radio station you could want, as most are on FM anyway, and the rest are mainly on AM.

Reception: The reception is always good as far as I have been able to tell, whatever the weather, and wherever the place (as long as you are in the area where the radio station is aimed at), reception is good both in busy towns as well as remote areas including parts of Cornwall and Wales. The headphone cord acts as an FM aerial, and this will work no matter where the headphone wire may be placed. For AM, there is a built-in aerial inside the unit.

Tuning in a Station: This is as simple as pressing plus and minus buttons located on the top face of the unit, next to the small screen. The current radio station is displayed on the screen. For quick tuning, you can hold the +/- buttons down and the unit will search until it finds a clear signal.

Presetting: The unit allows an impressive 30 radio stations to be preset, you can save them to the unit and recall them by holding down the number keys located on the top face. You can store 10 stations in FM1, 10 in FM2, and AM. Yes, that's why there is an FM1 and an FM2 if anyone was wondering. Alternatively, Automatic presetting allows you to let your Walkman automatically select radio stations and save them, which is quicker and easier but not as useful or personal.

    *Other Features*

Super Bass: Abbreviated to S-Bass, this lets you add more emphasis to the frequency for in my opinion a much better listening experience. To do this, use the buttons on the top face below the screen to turn it ON or OFF.

Ear Guard: As well as volume control (described below), you can, and I quote the manual, "protect your hearing" by lowering sound level without ruining music quality. Basically, you can set Ear Guard to OFF, 1 or 2, if it is on 2, even with maximum volume, the sound will be a bit quieter yet it really will be of the same quality, so this is a useful feature. I usually set it to 1. This can be changed with a small switch on the back of the unit, next to the belt clip.

Volume Control: This is simple, easy to use, and as would be expected. Simply a small rotating thingy on the side of the unit that you can easily move up and down with your thumb to quickly change the volume.

Sleep Timer: With this function you can set the unit to switch itself off after a certain amount of time, up to 6 hours, which is quite impressive. This is useful if you are sleepy but want to listen to music quietly. It is recommended in the manual, however, that if you use this function and it turns itself off whilst a tape is still playing, that you should pres stop to avoid damage, but I rarely bother. Why? Because I'm asleep, that's what the function is for!

Hold Switch: This is great, if your Walkman is in your pocket or likely to be knocked about a bit, the hold switch will disable all of the buttons, so that if you accidentally knock a button (easy to do), it won't affect what the player does. The switch is on the top face, easy to spot.

Reset: You can use the reset button if an error occurs on the screen or anywhere else, as it says, to reset.

Stereo/Mono: You can use a switch on the side of the unit to switch between stereo quality (good sound) and Mono quality (Less distortion).

Headphone Socket: Obviously, this is to plug in headphones; it is on the side of the unit.

Belt Clip: That's right, this plastic clip lets you attach the Aiwa HS-TX486 to your waist, which I useful if you are out and about. I clip it to my waist, hidden under a longish coat or T-Shirt, and have the headphones going up through my coat so that I don't look like a fool with wires all over the place.

    POWER SOURCES

    ************************

You have two options - electrical mains connection or, the usual choice, batteries. This Walkman takes two size AA batteries, which can be inserted, in a crucially easy-to-open, sliding door compartment on the bottom of the unit. There is a display on the screen to show remaining cell life, like on many mobile phones, which is very useful. The batteries seem to last a long time. In about 3 years that I've had the Walkman I haven't had to replace batteries many times, but then again I don't exactly use the thing every day. According to the manual, battery life is approximately 9 hours with Manganese batteries or 22 hours with alkaline batteries. I'm sure my batteries have lasted for at least that amount of 22 hours.

If you use AC house current, you need a lead/adaptor to plug into the Walkman (they suggest the Aiwa Ac-300 or AC-302) that will plug into a Wall socket. The plug is situated on the otherwise empty left side of the unit.

I have had no technical problems with either of the above two power sources; they haven't been damaged and have given good performance.

    AESTHETICS
    ********************

The Aiwa HS-TX486 is silver, almost like a metallic chrome shade actually, that looks very attractive with neat grey buttons and a lovely gold Aiwa logo on the top face. It also has a black belt clip, which I have explained about earlier. All in all, an attractive little piece of equipment and it will easily fit into your pocket if you don't like the belt clip idea. It isn't very heavy either, which is a good thing. It weighs approximately 172 grams or 6.02 ounces. The dimensions are 112.6 X 86.8 X 34.9 mm.

    DURABILITY
    *******************

I have had this product for what must be about three years now and have had no problems whatsoever, as with most of my possessions it has been dropped, knocked, and generally banged about a bit but there is not one mark or scratch on the unit, which is very encouraging. The Walkman proves that Aiwa can produce high-quality goods that do not get damaged easily. On a more technical side, I have had no errors or faults with the Aiwa HS-TX486, and it has basically worked like clockwork throughout the three years I have owned it. It is brilliant overall, v

I was hesitant to buy this at first because it was so inexpensive. I figured "you get what you pay for" right? Well, I was wrong. This little walkman is one of the best purchases I made. The sound and reception are great. I got a great deal. No complaints here!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-01-26

I bought it before Christmas, and I am very pleased with its quality. Do not listen to that guy who complained this one wasted him a lot of battery because of the easy turning on power button. In fact, there is a lock button, once you use it, all the other buttons will be disabled.

5 out of 5 stars Don't believe the bad this is one AWESOME portable for $20.......1999-11-30

I ordered my 486 and then saw that bad review and was sweating it...but boy were they wrong, this little go getter rocks. First off is the design. Its suberb, I've never had a portable so small, its barely bigger then a cassette.

The sound is crisp, clear, and robust. Of course your not going to have awesome bass, dah, its a freaking small headphone speaker. But this unit can compeate stright up with units costing 2 or 3 or 4 times as much. Yeah I thought, 20 bucks its going to be so so, I was wrong.

I don't have any ideal why its only 20 dollars but unlike others I dont look a gift horse in the mouth, I ride it baby, And boy am I glad I did.

It's everything a portable walkman should be, the problem with the other review was he was knocking it for not deliviring something its not suppose to anyway. It be like me buying a great surf board and giving it 2 stars cause its a crappy sewing machine.

Don't buy this and your missing out on one sweet deal. Its a great walkman that happens to be 20 dollars not a 20 dollar walkman that happens to be okay....

2 out of 5 stars Its not that great........1999-11-19

I have owned this cassette player for 3 months now. For the price , it is decent if you also believe the short durability of all cassette players. MY rants: 1. Biggest complaint is that mega bass is more like puny bass. Liked my old Panasonic better. 2. The power button on the front easily turns on by accidental contact. Unless you pull out the batteries after every use, expect to waste alot of $ on batteries. 3. Although it hasn't broken for me YET, the battery door is cheap and looks very breakable; esp in light of pulling out batteries when not in use. 4. For some reason, my cassette player keeps shuttling forward to reverse playback when it is cold. When it warms up, it resumes its normal function. Must be averse to cold.

Rave: 1.Price. Besides I had to use my Xmas certificate from last year before it expired.

5 out of 5 stars This Stereo RULES!!!.......2005-02-15

Loud, Loud, and Louder!! I have had this system now for 5 years and it still works perfectly for CD's! I have my playstation 2 and DVD player hooked up for audio through the MD and Video channels on the back of the system and it makes movies and games more fun to play. You can feel the rumble of thunder like the real thing, or a bomb exploding, and glass shattering everywhere like its at your feet!!! The only downside of it is that one tape player stopped working after about 2 1/2 years, and the other one just last month, Jan 05. 5 years is pretty good for a tape player I think. I can't close the door on one, and both don't play tapes. But everything else still works AS NEW! If you can find one, you won't be disappointed.

I got this system for christmas and it was the best present ever. It was EZ to set up. It has so many features on it like kareokee (?) and even a game. But the best part of this system is the bass. It has turned my old CDS into great CDs and its got BBE which enhances high pitched stuff. The tuner is great after you set up the FM radio antenna (?). I haven't tried out the AM radio yet but nobody listens to that. Its so easy to get any radio station; you just set a # for a station and press that # to go to it. CHA-CHING! I have 18 station presets. The tape works fine and it records stuff on tape fine. Theres a timer which wakes me up to the Beastie Boys every school day. Also the display is awesome! The only thing about this system is that its 200 fricking watts which is enough to blow out all your windows man! I listen to it on 10 of 50 and its sooooo loud. Bt thats coo'. So get this system instead some hurtin' sony that has no bass!

    5 out of 5 stars Tim W........1999-12-20

There are several reasons to select this unit over all others in this catagory. The karaoke feature, the high wattage and most importantly the bi-amp circutry. The bi-amp feature is most important in a low cost unit because it isolates the low frequency and allots 80 watts. The higher frequency drivers have their own 20 watt amp. If you listen carefully you will appreciate this. The Karaoke feature is a blast and works quite well! The clock and timer are a great idea. No more getting up in the middle of the night to turn off the music. Also the ultimate alarm clock! A well thought out and executed design. Past experience leads me to beleive that this unit should last quite a while.

3 out of 5 stars Great as long as it lasts.......1999-12-14

I bought this system for myself last christmas, about 12 months ago. The sound was great, I even played with the Karoke. The alarm worked fine. I play mostly CD's and the 3 cd changer worked fine. I tried the tape player and that's good also. However, the CD player just gave up the ghost. Don't know why. It tries to start but fails. I know they only warranty the units for one years but I think they should last longer than that.

4 out of 5 stars Solid system, with lots of extras.......1999-11-16

I purchased this system to reward my teenager for sustained effort. It got a very complete workout in the day and a half since we've had it, and I have one very satisfied teen. System setup was slightly confusing due to an extra set of cables, due to the subwoofer, and labeling that was not completely obvious. The instructions are extremely multi-lingual, though apparently at the expense of completeness. In particular, I found them switching between use of the remote and controls on the unit itself without any indication of that switch. Since we did all setup without the remote, due to a lack of the necessary 2 AA batteries, this caused some unnecessary confusion. I also ran into somewhat unintuitive control sequences (sleep does not equal timer).

Once it is up and running, though, this unit really pumps out the sound. We tried a wide variety of CDs and they all are reproduced extremely well, even using only the preset EQs. The little experimenting we did with the tuner showed very good sound for easy-to-recieve stations. The unit is in a basement room, and the tuner is not a total station magnet. It will take some experimentation to fine-tune antenna placement.

The highlight of the unit for my teen is the karaoke features. Get a decent microphone, say an Audio-Technica, plug it in, figure out the relevent settings, and run for it. You'll get hours and hours of solitude while your teen sings all their favorite songs. The only persisting downside is that I need more sound insulation of my kid's room, even when this unit is set to a very moderate setting of 12 (on a scale of 1 to 50).

Bottom line: This is a great moderately priced system for someone who wants the extras, particularly the karaoke. If you want to stick to the music, there might be better systems without the frills. Thus, its a perfect system for a teen who wants to sing/rap!

      4 out of 5 stars Great features.......2000-02-03

Why does it seem that the LOUDEST people think the least? THe HOLD switch should be on every walkman. Just use it religiously and you will never drain your batteries or switch stations in the middle of a work out. Digital tuning is a personal requirement and TV is a cool feature. I'm less impressed with the durability. I go through these every year or so, but I take it to the beach a lot. Headphones mediocre, so I use my own, so with the right EQ setting it sounds great.

3 out of 5 stars Great stereo sound.......1999-12-29

Good sound and I like the presetting of the stations. The on/off switch does get annoying when I change from FM back to AM, because when you press the button from FM, it goes to OFF and you must press ON again. The am reception was a problem while driving.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Purchase.......1999-12-19

This walkman features a hold switch. When the switch is activated none of the buttons including the On switch are functional. It is great to use while running or during any activity to stop against switching stations accidentaly. The sound is very good and the walkman is easy for anyone to program.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.......1999-12-15

I had this tape player for about a month before it stopped working. The radio part still works, but it will no longer play tapes. I suggest you find another walkman that is of better quality, because frankly I think this one is a piece of junk.

5 out of 5 stars Great portable, light and good sound.......1999-12-07

I bought this portable to use at the gym. It works great. There is now a HOLD button that when on does not allow accidental turning on of the unit and draining of batteries. I love the TV channels. The belt clip holds very well, even on the bottom of my workout shorts, upside down! . Very light and convienent for the gym. Great product.

      Product Description

The Aiwa NSX-A555 Digital Audio System is a full-featured unit that includes a three-disc CD changer and a preset graphic equalizer coupled with an eight-band spectrum analyzer that shows relative frequency levels. Aiwa uses bi-amplification to optimally deliver power where needed. The amplifier produces 35 watts per channel for the subwoofers and 15 watts per channel into the main two-way magnetically shielded speakers, for a total of 50 watts per channel. The equalizer comes with rock/pop/classic setting. You can set 32 radio station presets on the tuner. The clock-timer function allows using this system as a clock radio. You can program 20 tracks on the CD changer. The full-logic, feather-touch-controlled cassette deck plays on both transports and records on one. A jog dial speeds and simplifies programming the CD player. The system is supplied with a full-function remote control. This compact system stands about a foot high and packs plenty of sound.

The problem that I have with this system is after I have had it for about 2 years the cd player stoped reading cds! What is the point of haveing a cd player that will not work.

4 out of 5 stars Fills the bill.......2000-01-03

I work at a remote site which provides housing for me every weekend. I needed a small sound system to play CDs and radio, and especially to boost a pitifully small (by today's standards) 13" TV so I would at least THINK I was enjoying it! This system fills the room with sound, and fits into a large nightstand cabinet. I found hookup to be very easy, especially considering that the speakers have two pairs of leads apiece (one pair for the high/midrange component and one pair for the built-in subwoofer). The sound is awesomely solid -- and the three pre-set EQs can tailor most styles of music. Aiwa makes almost no mention of the surround speakers (a single mention in the manual, buried halfway down one page; nothing on the shipping box). I hooked up a pair of small A/V speakers and found that, from the video source, I was getting true surround signals when they were present. My points off are for the cassette decks -- though CDs can be auto-programmed to fit a cassette, it would be very helpful if the recording deck included auto-reverse. But for the price, it's a versatile system that can also double as an alarm clock. It does what I need -- and it makes watching videos on that 13" TV enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound in a Small Package.......1999-11-30

I just bought this system for my mother. She wanted something small that sounded good and could hold 3 CD's. This system also has 2 cassette decks. There are 3 programmed EQ settings from which to choose depending on the style of music you listen to. The display is colorful with lots of moving bar graphs and other information. The unit is very nice-looking and has a high-quality, sturdy feel to it. The real beauty of the system is it's dual-powered subwoofers. Each one get's a dedicated 35 watts leaving a more-than-ample 15 watts per channel for the mid-high range drivers for a sytem total of 100 watts. It sounds great at moderate levels with very clean, deep bass and only suffers at very high levels from distortion due to extreme woofer excursions. It even has outputs for surround speakers. For the size, price, and features of the system it's pretty hard to beat!
