Not fast enough for the TX1.......2007-06-29

I bought this as a memory card for the Canon TX1. It's not fast enough fast enough for HD recording at the best quality. That said, if you are just doing photos and other lite recording it will probably work fine.

I own 2 of these cards for my two Garmin PDA/GPS. The first card had a fast read speed and that led me to buy another one; but however, the second card turned out with a much slower read speed. I am not buying another product from this company.

durable SD card.......2006-05-01

I read that this card is supposed to be very durable. I use it in my Samsung i730 phone. I don't plan on freezing my phone or SD card, but its it nice to know someone did freeze their ATP SD card and it still worked.

Was searching for a card reader that would handle both SD Card and CF Card AND will not be messy to carry around. This is it.

I have a SanDisk 12-in-1 reader that broke yesterday. It just stopped working with my Windows XP laptop. So now I am planning to buy this one.

I know PNY makes good stuff.

Very smart design.......2003-11-30

Generally speaking, a card reader is a card reader and nothing to get religion about. However, this PNY has some smart features that others don't that are worth noting:

o You don't need to drag around a USB cable. The PNY comes with an extension cable, but you don't need it; this plugs directly into a computer... and its baby cord squeezes between the other USB plugs.

o This is much more portable than pretty much any other reader I've seen. If you plan to leave your reader on your desk connected to one computer, then the other guys are just fine. But this fits easily into pants or shirt pockets -- and again, there aren't any cords to lug around (and leave behind).

o I haven't had any of the hassle another reviewer mentions.

I recently (like 4 weeks ago) bought a PNY multicard reader that does USB 2.0 and reads smart, mmc, compact flash, memory stick, etc.

Well it worked fine for a few weeks than broke. If its plugged in my computer won't boot, and if I boot my computer then plug it in the computer freezes.

So no problem I thought...I'll just RMA it and get another one. Well I go to their site and click on Warranty and the multicard isn't even listed. So I thought I'd email them? Well no email address. Fax them? Nope no fax.

I go and get the original packaging I had with the card and call the tech support number. I must have clicked through 20 voice menu prompts and it seemed like forever (10 minutes probably). I finally get to the point where it tells me to hold for a tech support person...and the hold time was like 40 minutes (this is well before christmas too). It says I can leave voicemail and they will call me back...so I do...and I don't hear back.

So I try to call back today (day after christmas) and the line is busy. Unbelievable. I'll never buy another PNY product again.

I bought the Viking Intelliflash 6-in-1 USB Flash Memory Reader with the hopes of being able to save battery life on a digital camera. However, on trying an SD memory card from a camcorder I have, it ruined the card and said "files corrupted" and I lost all the pics. I read some of the other reviews and realised the problem lied with the SanDisk memory card I used.

I later tried a Kingston Memory Card I had bought for the digital camera and it worked fine.

This is a piece of junk.

The first time I inserted a smart media card, the card went all the way into the unit. To get it out, I had to call customer support who told me how to disassemble the unit so that I could extract it. Great start!

It does not consistently read CF cards.

Bottom line-stay away.

Corrupted first disk I tried.......2004-07-11

I tried this the first time with a brand new SD bought on vacation - could see pictures fine on camera but when used this Viking memory reader said disk and files corrupted. Was able to retrieve all but first five photos fortunately - unfortunately one of the five photos was a precious one that cannot be retrieved that was the main reason for the trip (daughter and father dancing).

I use several different types of cards for my camera and PDA, so I figured this would be a great thing to have. Installation is very easy, especially under Windows XP, where it it true Plug-and-Play. For other systems there is a CD with drivers included.

What is supposed to happen is that when it installs is that it will maps an addition four drives onto your computer; one for each slot. Unfortunatly it does not seem to be able to map the Smart Media drive. Even after installing the drivers off of the disc it was not able to read the SM drive.

I had two of these things; the first I exchanged for a new one after it failed to read anything. On the first one the slots weren't mounted to the face plate correctly, so when I put in the Smart Media card it fell into the back of the device and I had to spent five minuets shaking the thing out.

The second one I got was mounted correctly, but unable to read the SM cards. While it could read the Secure Digital card, it erased everything on it. Fortunatly I only had a couple of files on it, but a lot of people use SD cards for storing programs or pictures, and they would have lost everything if they used this. The Compact Flash card was the only one that worked reliably, but even that one I had problems with since it was difficult to jam the card all of the way into the slot.

I am very dissapointed with this device and with Viking, who usually makes good products. Most people don't use all six types of cards, so a lot of them would go to waste, so I would recomend just getting seperate readers for each card. It'll cost more, but probably worth it in the long run.

On a side note, I would just like to say that Amazon.com has an excellent No-questions-asked return policy. After I asked to replace my first one they paided the return postage and sent me a new one two days later.

Doesn't work with SD Cards.......2004-05-17

"We have had a few customers report seeing problems with some Sandisk cards. It appears to be a compatibility issue with Sandisk's new SD cards and the reader. The new Sandisk cards read/write speeds are faster than their older cards, and this difference may be the cause of the error.

Currently Engineering is looking at the problem. When we find a resolution I will send you an update."

My Purchase Did Not Work........2006-12-29

I purchased this product from CompUSA at a retail store on Dec 22. 2006. While it mounted in my PC without problems, it did not work properly. After installation the OS (WinXP Pro) USB2 recognized the 4 drive volumes but then about 10-15 minutes later the drives dissapeared and I had to disconnect the internal cable and reconnect it again to view the drive letters. After inserting an SD flash memory card (it fits/works label side down)it told me that "9 minutes remain for download" when accessing a 25Mb file on the 1GB SD card. When I tried to disconnect the card via the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, it told me that "The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." When I removed the SD card, the drive letter (J in my case) also dissapeared. I never did read the SD card in this device. I'm taking it back to CompUSA tomorrow. I need a reader that works 100%. For reference, I borrowed a friend's external USB2 SD card reader and it read the 25MB file in less than 15 seconds from time of plugging it in the USB2 slot.

Good Idea / Implementation Failure.......2006-04-30

Though the manufacturers of this product (CompUSA) had a good idea, to make use of the usually-unused second 3.5" drive bay on most desktop PCs, they failed to produce a usable product.

This unit handles nine types of Flash Memory in four slots. It plugs into the USB connector on your motherboard (if you can locate it) and creates four consecutive drive letters for the four slots following your local drive letters (A: - E:). You are also provided with a cable that exits the rear of the chassis
and plugs instead into an external USB connection. Though low-tech, this alternative method does allow you to unplug the unit when not in use. Additionally, it does not require power beyond that supplied by the USB.

1) The screw holes did not come close to lining-up with those in the computer case. I had to drill new holes in the plastic sides of the drive.

2) The automatic drive letter assignments will interfere with any network mappings you may have set in the F: - J: range.

3) I didn't have the pleasure of testing all of the slots, but, even though the unit would assign its four drive letters, the first slot would not read the inserted memory card; and my SD Memory cards, the most important ones for my purposes, would not even fit into their respective slot. Eventually I gently forced one in, but this slot did not work either. After prying it out, I bent the card trying to insert it a second time.

I purchased mine in the aisles of a CompUSA store. I have since removed and discarded it, along with a 1MB SanDisk SD Memory card worth twice its value, and am currently reviewing similar items at Amazon.Com from other manufacturers who have hopefully done a better, less careless job than CompUSA did in implementing this product's features.

Though deserving only one star, the CompUSA "3.5 inch Internal 9-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Card Reader/Writer" receives a generous two stars for a good idea, a satisfactory price, and the remote possibility that the other two slots may have worked.

This reader is a perfect supplement to card readers built into many laptop computers. It includes all the basic cards, especially the smart media which seems to be missing on many of the new laptops. The only supplement I think would make this better is to have a permanently attached USB cord to avoid hunting for one.

APC is the de-facto standard for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and surge-suppression products, and the Smart-UPS 620 is no exception. It's a solidly built, high-quality unit with four receptacles for your equipment, an automatic biweekly self-test of the battery, easy-to-follow instructions, and a two-year comprehensive warranty. A set of diagnostic LEDs on the front panel, coupled with audible alarms, will notify you when the unit is serving load from the battery, when the battery is low, or when the circuits are overloaded and some load needs to be removed.

The manufacturer advertises the unit offers 15 to 20 minutes of run time from its battery; however, in our tests, it served a workstation for only 14 minutes before quitting. When we tested the Smart-UPS 620 with two workstations connected, the run time dropped to seven minutes. Basically, the more machines you place on the unit, the less time the battery will be able to provide power. The amount of time you need to safely shut down the services running on those machines will dictate the total number of machines you can place on this UPS. This is, of course, assuming you're on the premises when the power interruption occurs.

If you're not on the premises when this happens, however, you're not necessarily out of luck. The Smart-UPS 620 comes bundled with PowerChute Plus software, which is compatible with Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT; Novell NetWare; and SCO UNIX. The software receives information on the unit via a management serial port on the back of the UPS, and the software allows you to monitor and diagnose the power usage through the UPS. When you're off-site, you can configure custom responses to different power events: the software can notify you via e-mail or pager, shut down the server, or run a command file. The APC Web site offers free software downloads for other operating systems, including Linux and Mac OS. You must be a registered user on the Web site in order to download any software, but registration is free.

The Smart-UPS 620 features outlets for RJ-11 (phone) and RJ-45 (10Base-T/100Base-Tx) wiring. Passing your data lines through this unit protects you in two ways. First, it constantly conditions the electricity coming through the line, eliminating noise and interference, both of which can result in decreased throughput and potentially lost data. Second, it protects your Ethernet hubs, modems, and NICs from getting fried due to surges and spikes that enter via the phone wiring (which is common if you live in an area that gets a lot of lightning storms).

The Smart-UPS 620 also features a customer-replaceable battery. While APC purports that the battery is hot swappable, this is a little misleading: what you get is a single-battery unit that you can replace without powering down the machines you have connected to it--if the normal building wiring is functioning properly. You cannot, however, replace the battery if the unit is serving the load from the battery. Also, to replace the battery on Smart-UPS 620, you need to unscrew an access panel, shimmy the battery out, unplug the leads, then add the new battery. This is no small feat, as the access panel is located on the bottom of this 26-pound unit. Plus, you'll most likely have the unit tucked away under a desk or in a closet, where it's not easily accessible.

With its high-quality construction, management software, and phone/date line protection, the Smart-UPS 620 is a great choice for any home or small office. But if you absolutely cannot tolerate any downtime for your machines, you should consider UPS products designed for data centers; these feature multiple redundant batteries that you can remove with a convenient pull handle. --Alex Edelman

It was so so so sensitive to line voltage that it would shutdown and alarm when it wasn't necessary... on a couple occassions waking me up in the middle of the night.

Eventually it failed to the point where it just randomly shutdown my computer.

My Watchdog.......2001-07-23

My APC 620 UPS is like a vigilant watchdog prowling my streams of incoming electrons for those intruding spikes of voltage that will shred my little IC's to bits. My watchdog eats all obnoxious spikes for lunch in mille seconds. This vigilant watch dog will fetch the needed electrons from its sealed lead acid battery to keep my home office uninterrupted of its diet of electrons. I can monitor my watchdog through a computer interface via the Smart-UPS 650 PowerChute plus software to tout his vigilance and to establish his range of policing. I had no trouble in setting up the APC 620 system. Hardware is a no brainer, just plug in what you want to protect. The software defaults were perfectly adequate for a home system. My system, a loaded HP Pavilion with 19 inch monitor, HP PSC500, DSL modem with Ether hub, 2-line telephone and a 13-watt desk lamp (to help me find a flash light). The APC 620 will keep me up for about 15 minutes and the software will log out and shut down my system. Over all, this dog is a keeper.

I must admit that the smart part is still sitting on the shelf. What I wanted was the 620 not some 500. I am using a Compaq Deskpro for a console on a UNIX system. The building is subject to blackouts and surges. It takes several minutes to log every one out from there and check printer status. So far this system as worked well. I even got gutsy and now have a modem plugged in as well. I have not let it run down all the way except at night so all I know is it lasts at least 15 minutes. The more important thing is when the office lights go out The system is still running.
