Combining a pair of binoculars with a digital camera is a brilliant idea with endless possibilities, with useful applications from birdwatchers documenting their greatest "catches" to parents zooming in on their kids on the playing field. Unfortunately, Bushnell's Imageview digital binoculars, which integrate digital imaging into a pair of 10x25 binoculars, may be ahead of their time.

The image quality of the binoculars isn't a problem, as they employ clear optics that allow for sharp focusing at the fixed 10x zoom level. Build quality also is good, with thick rubber coating on the sides to ensure a good grip and fold-down rubber eyecups to accommodate eyeglass wearers. The small 25mm objective lenses, however, don't provide substantial light-gathering but do keep the design as small and light as possible

The built-in camera will be the real problem for most users. It uses a low-resolution CCD that snaps pictures at a fixed resolution of 640 x 480, which is fine for e-mail but not adequate for making prints. To make matters worse, most of the shots we took were grainy, with lots of compression artifacts and subpar color.

If you can live with those limitations, the camera does have the benefits of ease of use and plenty of image-storaging capacity. With 8 MB of built-in memory, we snapped nearly 150 pictures before connecting the camera to a PC. No image preview is available, but a basic black-and-white LCD display on top of the camera tells you how many pictures you've snapped and the selected mode.

With a better digital camera and removable memory slots, this idea of a high-quality camera-binocular hybrid could realize its full potential. However, the image quality compromises imposed by the Imageview will be too much for many to bear, regardless of the low price. --T. Byrl Baker

Not a bad gadget.......2007-08-20

I would give this 3 and half stars. I received one of these as a free gift, so free is good. I wouldn't advise paying full retail price else you may be disappointed. After reading the horrible reviews, I debated opening the box when it arrived. What I found best for all software which comes in the box, never open the CD! If you have any other OS, other than Win98, then just plug it in to a USB port and the camera memory will appear as a disk drive. You do NOT need and do not want the software which comes in the box. This is true for any digital camera.

As binoculars go, this pair isn't bad. It's small, rubberized, has a focus and rubber eye cups. Chromatic distortion is slight, good sharpness and detail, although there is some fogginess around the outside of the field of view. The built-in camera is a toy by all accounts. Bird watching? I think not. My suggested use is to collect evidence of the neighbor's dog going through your garbage or of a suspicious car parked across the street. It's good for what I use it for.

Really fun to own!.......2007-03-13

This camera binocular is great! Good magnification, light weight, with fantastically fun software! Comes with everything you need to take, save and edit photos.
Would have given it 5 stars but it is a little hard to hold the camera still while snapping a picture because the button is on top. Same with focusing, a little difficult for the same reason. All in all, it was a great buy, shipped fast to Hawaii, and a welcomed addition to our camera/binocular collection. Can't wait to use it in Yellowstone!

He'd love it if he used it.......2007-01-20

Got this for my hubby for Christmas. Someday maybe he'll decide to use it...he is technophobic! I think it's a great idea for the things we love to do...eagle watching, canyon trips, Hawaii...etc. If he doesn't use it I will! To be able to look through binoculers and then snap the picture seems like an excellent mating of old and new technololgy.

Garbage for photos.......2006-07-07

Complete crap. The installation as mentioned in many other reviews was next to impossible. I bought my mother this before she went on a trip to Alaska, thinking she could bring some nice close up shots to complement her other digital camera shots. But that was not the case, after spending hours trying to get it installed on XP the files were not even the right format. The picture quality was horrible. This product is a joke, I wish I could get my money back, the only good thing about it is that the binoculars work. Better off just buying a pair of those, skip this product and save yourself a headache.

Get what you pay for.......2006-07-01

The camera with this unit was hardly worth it the low cost. The optics are fine for the price, but built in camera was useless. Unable to obtain a clean shot. I brought it to try this out in the back yard and take some pictures. I figured if I like it I would invest in a more expensive model. In hindsight I should have just saved my money and buy a better model. Buyer beware!!!

Fast, quiet, and efficient.......2004-02-10

This unit replaced my HP 5P laser printer and an older, much larger Sharp copier which had seen it's better days. Both of these laser functions greatly surpass my older pieces of equipment.

The scanner also works great although it did take a little practice to figure it out since I had never used one before.

I opted not to get the model with the fax since that feature doesn't seem necessary...one can scan in a document or photo and e-mail it.

Not worth buying.......2007-01-04

I boought this product to use at my gym, and it failed to pick up the signals from the in-house broadcast system. It also had a very awkward opening for inserting tapes. I ended up throwing it away.

Sweet unit at an excellent price.......2005-07-12

i'm delighted with this set. we watch a lot of dvd's, but still have quite a few vhs tapes in our collection as well. this unit bypasses the headache of connecting a vcr, dvd player, and tv. no need to set up a separate cd player in the room either, the dvd drive plays cd's & cdr's too. what's not to like?

the set has a nice crisp picture: some of our vhs tapes haven't looked this good in years. but we're even more impressed by the audio: in a small room, the surround sound feature is sweet and almost creates the aural illusion of a modest home theater setup. one word of caution: this set has more back end than people tend to associate with tv sets these days; you'll definitely want to compare its dimensions with your target space.

if you're looking for an all-in-one solution for a bedroom, small family room or den, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than this for the money.

great but the remote has a built-in problem.......2002-07-11

I bought this at a dealer at a nice discount since it was the display model. When I got it home, the right speaker produced bad distortion and the left speaker sounded just okay. Also, the remote control's light function only lit up the top four buttons (the component selectors). So I took the TV back for repairs (under warranty) and ordered a new remote.

When I got the TV back, the sound was very good. Last night I hooked it up to my stereo, and it was, like, totally awesome dude! I found some audio functions I wasn't aware of, so I'm sure with a little more time and fiddling, it's going to sound even better.

The picture is very nice, too. I don't have a DVD player yet, but I'm sure when I hook that up with the S-video jack, I'm going to be very impressed.

But that darned remote... I got the new remote and same thing, only the top four buttons light up. I took it apart, and sure enough, the only LED's are in the top of the unit. So even though all the buttons are transluscent so as to accept backlighting, this crazy remote was designed only to have the top row of buttons light up! What were the geniuses who designed this thing thinking? That we wouldn't need any of the other buttons in the dark?

And, like with most modern consumer electronics, the manual is worthless. It simply lists the different buttons and what they do. But that doesn't help--what I want to know is how to use them and why I'd want to use them. It took me about two weeks to figure out how to set up the TV so I could use my VCR to record shows. In the end, it makes sense, but why not have someone who knows how to write edit the user manual?
