Amazon.com Review
Canon's Elura 40MC is one of the smallest, lightest digital video camcorders available. Weighing around 14 ounces, this vertically oriented camcorder fits snugly into the palm of your hand (not resting on your hand like most cameras, this one fits almost inside it).
Because of its compact frame, some of its features had to be trimmed. Its 2-inch LCD is smaller than most, but its bright screen can be viewed easily even in daylight. Unlike many other camcorders, the Elura's viewfinder displays in color, not black and white. It also offers only a 10x optical zoom, not as high as other cameras, but still adequate for most users.
Unlike many camcorders whose still image quality is subpar, the Elura 40MC captures 1024 x 768 pixel still pictures on a Secure Digital media card (an 8 MB SD card is included) rather than on the MiniDV media. And if coupled with a Canon CP-10 card photo printer, you can directly print images from the Elura without going through your PC.
But it's video quality that matters most in a DV camcorder. The Elura 40MC captured excellent video, even in poor lighting conditions. It doesn't have a built-in light, but its low-light mode still managed to record impressive video with realistic colors and limited graininess.
The Elura's autofocus worked quickly and accurately, and its zoom buttons were within easy reach during filming. The basic modes of the camera make it point-and-shoot easy for the novice user. Audio quality with the built-in mic wasn't the best (we noticed some noise during recording), but the Elura comes with a port that lets you connect an external microphone.
It's not the least expensive camcorder out there, but the extreme portability of the Elura 40MC paired with its excellent video quality make it an appealing choice. --J. Curtis
Pros:
- Light and compact
- High quality video
- Good still image capture
Cons:
- Average optical zoom
- Some audio noise
Amazon.com Product Description
The Elura 40MC joins a growing crowd of small, vertically oriented camcorders that pack an enormous number of features into their tiny cases. In this case, you get a 10x optical zoom, analog inputs, and a 2-inch LCD monitor, among other things.
Lens
Canon is known for their lenses, and the 10x optical zoom lens is a good one. The zoom can also be digitally enhanced to provide 200x magnification, but the 10x should be enough for most purposes. Additionally, the camcorder is equipped with an image stabilizer to help eliminate the shakes and jitters associated with handheld video shooting (at any zoom level).
Digital Stills
The digital still mode records 1,024 x 768 stills onto an included 8 MB SD card, and will also work with MultiMediaCards. While 1,024 x 768 is good for printing smaller pictures, it is probably best for e-mailing pictures to friends, or for posting pictures on a Web site.
Inputs and Outputs
The Elura also features a great number of inputs and outputs, meant to satisfy even the most ardent gear-fanatic's lust. You get the standard IEEE 1394 port, composite and S-video analog inputs for converting all your old footage to digital, and a mic input that allows you to use an external mic source (good for pro-sounding audio).
The Elura 40MC is a great little camcorder that includes a lithium-ion battery, power adapter, battery charger, wireless remote, S-video cable, stereo video cable, and 8 MB SD card.

Canon, you should be ashamed of yourself.......2007-05-12
As a lifelong Canon user starting as far back as 30 years ago with my AV-1, I cannot believe the cr*p this company is capable of producing. After a little more than three years and only 6 tapes worth of footage, I have vowed NEVER to buy another Canon optical product again. My Elura 40MC was purchased in Singapore but has been in for repairs more than half a dozen times in three different countries! It is now at a repair shop in Bangkok and the quote I just got from them is that it will cost me another $375 to get this into working condition. Unit has never been dropped, no scratches, still looks brand new. But every time I replace one part, two months later another problem emerges. I have now spent more than double the cost of the unit on repairs. This was sent in three times for the "Remove cassette" problem and the first two times Canon service could not fix the issue, the third time I had the entire drive mechanism replaced at my own expense. The only reason I kept spending the money to have this lemon repaired was because I LOVED my Canon and refused to believe that the company could build such a faulty product. Sorry Canon, but you have lost all future sales from me and I am determined to tell EVERYONE I can about my story. I will continue to use all my other Canon products but when these kick the bucket, I plan to replace them with competing brands. I've already begun the switchover -- two years ago when I needed to replace my compact digicam, I looked at Casio, Kodak, Panasonic, Minolta and Pentax -- but not a single Canon....

Free repairs.......2006-05-27
I just got my camera back from Canon today. Repairs, which were free (Canon paid for shipping both ways), were completed in about a week.
I give Canon credit for owning up to the camera's desing flaws & providing free repairs even thought the cameras are WAY out of warranty.
I've owned 5 Canon cameras, and I will continue to buy & recommend their products. The cameras have worked well, and I respect the company for fixing their problems.
Good Camera for less then two years.......2006-02-10
The "remove tape" issue and damage to tapes started in less then two years. We spent $1000 for this camera for two years, you can buy two camera's for that cost now with the same features. I wish we would have read the reviews before buying. It was a nice camera when it was new thats why it gets 1-star from me and not 0-stars.

$1000 disposable camera.......2005-03-16
This is the first dv camcorder I've bought. Its size appealed to me, and it seemed to get great reviews online. At first I liked it, only being a bit dissapointed in the grain you get in anything except for very bright outdoor scenes. A few months later I had to send it in for repair because it started recording a few pixels as constant red. This was very distracting and pretty much ruined any picture. I was told the repairs would take 2 weeks. They took a month and a week, but at least I got it back fixed. It worked fine for another year, when suddenly it became a very expencive doorstop. It started when I put in a tape and got a "Remove this Cassette" error. A few more tries left me with a camcorder that won't even close anymore. It just beeps and spits out any tape I put in it. I can't even close it without a tape in it. I searched for this online and found hundreds of people complaining about the same problem. It seems like this camera only has about a 1 year lifespan. Other canon cameras seem to suffer from the same problem. I'm really upset about having spent so much money on something that didn't last a reasonable amount of time. Do your research before you buy this.

summer with grandma.......2007-08-08
It is a great gadget to have for the summer. I love the size of it. I am glad I purchased it. I enjoy having it at my gradma's house this summer. She does not have to listen to loud music since I have my Ipod.:)
lasts about 2yrs.......2007-05-14
bought 3 years ago. battery always sucked but entire thing died today (despite trying all the "trouble-shooting" tips Apple offers on website). very disappointing considering i paid $300 bucks for 3 years ago. AVOID simply for the miserably short battery life alone. almost missing my old walkman.
Not a very good ipod.......2007-04-20
I had my ipod mini for about 1 year before it crashed and I had to get it fixed for 50 dollars. Not a big deal. But then a few months later it crashed again and this time I decided that it would be better to get a ipod nano instead of paying 50 dollars every month it crashes. I never dropped it and I never got water on it but it still broke.
iPOD.......2007-03-26
I had to replace it because it crashed on me and I only had it for about 5 months.
It's an IPOD... .......2007-03-21
If you ar reading this, then perhaps this is would be your first IPOD you've ever purchased. Because, there is nothing different about this Ipod than the others. it's a very nice MP3 Player. All of the Ipods are. If 4GB is enough space for you, then this is a great device to play your music.

Customer Reviews:
backplane failed
<2 years.......2007-09-12
We used the 3Ware RDC-400-SATA enclosure for the RAID array serving our lab 32-node Linux cluster. This is a heavily-loaded scientific computing system with jobs that often run for weeks at a time, so any downtime is potentially disastrous.
This 3Ware product has actually increased our downtime--the backplane failed before any of the drives.
Two weeks prior to failure, the buzzer sounded. The alarm does not distinguish between fan underspeed and drive failure, but the disk array appeared fully functional, so we assumed a fan problem. Unfortunately, replacing a fan requires shutting down the system, taking the cage apart, and soldering the new fan power cables. Also, there are 3 fans on the enclosure, so fixing a fan underspeed problem may require replacing all 3 at once. And in hindsight, it's still unclear whether the buzzer was actually indicating a partial failure of the backplane.
We eventually lost connection to one of the drives in the cage. After swapping cables and drives, it was clear that a backplane pass-through had failed. Since then, we've removed the cage and connected all drives directly to the 3Ware RAID card, and our disk array is back to normal.
The 3Ware RMA team was unhelpful in replacing/repairing the failed unit.
Pros:
* The drive enclosure looks pretty, and it feels mechanically robust.
Cons:
* Poor quality: backplane failed
<2 years
* Poor design: replacement fans must be soldered in; indiscriminate alarm (is it the fan? is it drive?)
Final thoughts:
What good is a hot-swap drive cage if it fails before your hard drives do? If you want a drive cage that looks nice, buy 3Ware. If you want a drive cage you can depend on, go with another manufacturer and save yourself the trouble.

Extremely happy with camera.......2007-09-06
We are extremely happy with our underwater camera. We have taken super pictures of our 3 year old granddaughter swimming underwater. While some of the pictures didn't turn out it was because we were aiming down at the bottom of the pool. It's not professional quality but at the price it was worth just the fun of playing with our granddaughter.
Great Value!!.......2005-03-31
Great underwater camera for the price. Really works, pictures are good. My kids had lots of fun taking underwater pictures on our vacation.

Spend the extra $ for something else.......2002-04-14
The subwoofer is nice, the speakers are not good, have already relaced mine with another brand, at the moment the receiver is not working, it cuts off after 5 minutes.I will probably have to have it repaired and I have had it 2 months, I am very unhappy with it.
Great sound! Great system!.......2002-03-10
I was skeptical at first. When buying electronics I usually stick to the major players (Sony, JVC, Panasonic, etc.) After firing it up, that skepticism was put to rest. The sound is amazingly clean and clear! The 8 inch 100 watt sub delivers enough bass to rattle your windows and your neighbors too if you so desire. The full range satellites hold their own as well, pumping at high volume (the most my ears can stand anyway) with virtually no distortion. No negatives that I can see. Great performer all around. I'm adding Aiwa to the list of the elite.
Simply the best Home Theater value for the money bar none.......2001-10-31
...it is the best Home Theater System for the money bar none...I have been an an avid Aiwa fan for over 23 years now and have never been disappointed with their products. From my first cassette deck in 1979 to my latest purchase of the HT-D980, that is still the case.
The Ht-D 980 has 120 Watts x 5 which will blow your doors off if not careful! The speakers and subwoofer included in the package sound awesome and can crank with no discernible distortion even at ear-splittingly high levels. It is amazing.
The unit has a plethora of digital inputs to assure you have enough hook-ups for your digital equipment; i.e., DVD, etc. It even offer a Coaxial digital input which is nice, in addition to 3 optical inputs, plus it even offers an optical digital output! As far as regular RCA audio/video inputs, it has 3 inputs and 3 outputs as well as one set of in/out on the front of the unit for quick connection of such things as a video camera, etc. Also for anyone still holding LP's the unit has a phono input which is not so common anymore in the marketplace! Too, another awesome feature is 2 S-Video inputs and outputs for connection of SVHS equipment and output to your S-video equipped television for superior resolution.
Other Home Theater features are 5:1 channel analog input and Dolby Pro Logic. The unit has a graphic equalizer to tailor music or video to your taste and a bass-enhancing feature called super T-Bass which is great for that extra 'Ooomph' out of the subwoofer I need to hear in my Rock music or the soundtract to Apocalypse Now and The Doors.
The tuner in the unit is awesome with 32 presets, all digital. The unit's displays are not only cool looking but well laid out and informative; I especially like the surround display, it rocks!
No drawbacks, only superb performance typical of Aiwa products! Grab it, you won't be sorry.
