Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars slooooow and surly customer service.......2007-09-23

I know next to nothing about router technology, and have NEVER posted an online review of anything before. But my poor customer service experiences with buffalo have compelled me to alert other shoppers that the company's supposed 24/7 service is less than stellar: Almost every call I made was met with a 45 min-plus wait. In one of the very the few times I stuck around long enough to speak with a human, the service provider handling my problem very rudely lectured me about how I just needed to shut up and let him do his job when I tried to clarify my difficulties. After all the annoying waits, harangues, and tinkerings, this router performs slightly less well than my crappy old Linksys. I bought this router because of its "24/7" service and positive reviews on amazon, and I most definitely regret the purchase. If there's an outside chance you might need to speak with someone (polite, without waiting an hour) to help you with anything involving your router, I would strongly advise against buying the buffalo HP wireless G.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-20

Great product. Make sure you configure it to use AES if you want maximum security. I tested it as a firewall and it works great. Its a very good router. My bandwidth (on my desktop PC) actually increased since I switched from a wired firewall/router to this product.

1 out of 5 stars Poor customer service.......2007-09-20

Linked up with my windows computer ok, but spent hours w/customer service to work with my mac laptop and had no luck. Just went out and got a apple router and both link ups were automatic, no issues.

2 out of 5 stars Looks Great - Can't Get it to Connect.......2007-09-14

Received my new Buffalo router today -- tried at least 7-8 times to get it up and running with our 2 new HP Pavilion notebooks -- no deal. I called '24/7' customer service/tech support and after being on hold for at least 25 mins and listening to elevator music, I gave up. Will try again tomorrow. Seems as if it would recognize wireless connections/modem/DSL/cable instantly, but it doesn't. I plugged my old Netgear router back in, reset it, and voila! We were back up and wireless in under a minute. Hopefully I will get through to someone at Buffalo Technologies tomorrow -- more later.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR GAMING!.......2007-09-14

When I bought this router, I wasnt too sure about the Buffalo brand. I was so used to Netgear and Linksys. But what a hidden gem. After I set this router, I never had to touch it again. The connection was never dropped. I would be connected wirelessly through my computer and my Playstation 3, but there was never any lag. I recommend this router if you plan to connect wirelessly through your gaming system.

Product Description

LINKSYS WAP54G - Wireless-G is the emerging 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B ( 802.11b ) products found in homes, businesses and public wireless hotspots around the country. The best part is, since they share the same 2.4GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices talk to existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys Wireless-G access point lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g ) or Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to your network. Because both standards are built-in, you can protect your investment in existing 802.11b infrastructure, and migrate your network clients to the new screaming-fast Wireless-G standard as your needs grow.

For more information on the differences between an access point and a router with access point, see the following table:

access point vs. router To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G access point can encrypt all wireless transmissions. The MAC address filter lets you decide exactly who has access to your wireless network. Configuration is a snap with the Web browser-based configuration utility.

Wireless-G is the upcoming 54 Mbps wireless networking standard that's almost five times faster than the widely deployed Wireless-B (802.11b) products found in homes, businesses, and public wireless hotspots around the country--but since they share the same 2.4 GHz radio band, Wireless-G devices can also work with existing 11 Mbps Wireless-B equipment.

Future-proof your wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-G access point. You'll enjoy Wireless-B connectivity today, and be prepared for a high-speed Wireless-G tomorrow.

The Linksys Wireless-G access point is compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP.

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

Which Wireless Standard Is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

3 out of 5 stars Bad pricing segment.......2007-09-15

ok AP if you just want a transparent access point on your home network or SOHO. Because it is transparent I don't think the price was right, it should be $20 bucks or less. I would highly recommend purchasing the router/firewall AP version which is better value for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good if looking for wireless G.......2007-09-14

I live in an old (circa 1855) stone house. This WAP is in one corner of the house and is used for a computer in a far corner of the house. Works pretty well over that distance as well as being able to handle multiple connections. If starting a new network I suggest moving up to N standard.

4 out of 5 stars Used as an Access Client need Two of these........2007-09-10

I wanted to connect a wired computer to my wireless network, so I bought one of these, and a WRT54G router (which I needed anyway) which claims to act like a Access Point (it does but..), spent several hours attempting to configure it. Then used the on line linksys help (via the web) and then was told that in Access Client mode, this device will only connect to another WAP54G device. So bought the second one, configured the first to be an access Point, and the second one to be an access client. (pretty quickly as I'm now very familiar with the web based interface) And it works!

First, it's a bit unnerving because have to configure each of the two devices one at a time using a computer attached to your router. Be sure to set the IP address to different numbers. And you have to use WEP encription, no other option appears to work. And once you have both with seperate IP addresses you can configure everything but setting the AP CLient mode. Do that last with just the client mode box attached to your router.

Then to test it, first disconnect the AP Client from the router, then be sure that the other Access Point is connected and reachable (bring up the web page), then disconnect your computer from the router, and plug it into the AP Client box. It should work.

A couple of notes, the AP Client works with the WRT54G router/Access Point IFF you turn all the encryption off. (This is why I spent so much time before calling in the online help. I kept thinking I had it set up correctly, then turning up the security levels and having it fail....) Of course I do not recommend this mode at all. Which makes me wonder why you can't make a WRT54G do the right thing, but you can't. And there is a diagram on the linksys website which shows the correct configuration. It just took me several looks to understand exactly what it saying. (that the WRT54G in access point mode is not equivalent to a WAP54G).

Second, skip the stupid installation CD, go to the linksys site and find out the default IP address, and configure it using that.

Third, look up the suggestions for increasing the security for your wireless network, and configure your boxs appropriately once you have it working on your test machine. (turn off SSID broadcast, disable configuration management from wireless devices, change the password etc.)

Be sure to use a different channel than your other wireless router. (I still wanted to connect a different computer wirelessly to the WRT54G) And use the search for networks scan to see what channels the neighbors are using and pick a different one from them too if possible.

On the speed issue, I've got a pretty small house so I regularly get the full 54Mps of data transfer. It's pretty nice. You need to pay attention to all the other comments about getting the antennas aligned to point from each of the two access points to each other for best reception. Not hard, but worth doing.

And if all this becomes too confusing, use the Web based help from Linksys, the person I had was very helpful. (Be sure that your drivers are the most up-to-date as that will be the first thing they will ask you to do.)

1 out of 5 stars a disaster.......2007-09-01

I purchased this Access Point to augment the range of my WRT54G router which, installed next to my PC on the third floor, would not reach a wireless laptop on my second floor or beyond. Following the CD's instruction I promptly got stuck, lost my server connection, and spent 4 hours talking to a service representative of Linksys before I was told I had a "defective" unit because the power light on the Access Point showed "red". A return and replacement shipment was arranged at the cost of $30 to me. The replacement proved that it too had a red power light which, I now know, is perfectly correct! Again following the CD's instructions I lost its remaining portion after wanting to change the channel. Another lengthy phone conversation finally taught me that there is no need to connect the Access Point with the router - as the instructions tell - and that the Access Point could be placed elsewhere in the house. A very complicated two hours of guidance, and very complicated settings guidance, eventually lead me to place the Access Point on the second floor and I can now connect my wireless laptop on all floors. What a nightmare! And what lousy instructions! I'd not buy another Linksys product. Getting things done is just too much of a headache!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the money.............2007-08-23

I have 3 of these, 2 are used for a bridge and the other is used as an AP. The bridge is between 2 buildings with some trees in between and about 500' apart. My connection is setup with WEP and I have a reliable connection that runs about 15 mbps. After installing a pair of HGA7T's (7db ant.) my rates now run at 24 mbps. The AP has 4 clients and has been great. The flexibility and performance of this unit is great for the money. For use in homes and small offices, I would highly recommend this unit.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wow! It works so well!.......2007-09-18

This gadget is simply amazing. I had no trouble whatsoever setting it up or using it. Unlike some other products, it does exactly what it is supposed to and does it well. I used it to hook up a connected digital copier, and the copier never knew the difference. It was beautiful.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star is that it does not suport WPA2 security. It does support WPA, which is good enough. I didn't want to get involved with WEP, because it's so easy to break. Once they give it WPA2 support, it will be perfect.

I have to say that the people who rate this product poorly probably don't know what they're doing with networking hardware anyway. This has a very easy set-up process; I did it manually (w/o using the CD) in 5 minutes. I can't attest to the setup wizard's functionality or lack thereof, but it is totally unnecessary. Just plug the thing into the router wired, type 192.168.1.226 in a web browser, and configure the wireless settings. Then it will save settings and reboot, the wireless will log on, and any time you turn it on, it will log back on wirelessly. That's how it provides a bridge effect.

A very good product. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Linksys Wireless Bridge.......2007-08-21

Hookup was easy. Setup was more complicated than it should have been. Most
all other adapters etc. will find all available ssid systems and give you
a choice of which to choose. In this case the default ssid was set to
Linksys. The Linksys access point default ssid is set to linksys. See the
difference? "linksys...Linksys" the ssid is case sensitive. That held me
up for a few hours. If you don't know what to look for it is like trying
to find a needle in a haystack. Would not have been a problem except my
eyesight is not to well these days. Outside of that, no problem. Works fine
and does what it is supposed to. My HD-DVD player can connect and download
the latest firmware and access internet content with the HDDVD features.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected.......2007-08-16

I had nothing but problems with this unit at first. I ended up having to call customer service to get it set up. Then I was informed that it was a common problem I was having. They told me I cannot reset the unit or I'd have to call them to get it set up again. Very disappointed! Now that I got it working, it works great. I just have to be sure not to touch the reset button.

3 out of 5 stars owned the wet11 for 4 years.......2007-08-13

Good product, crappy doc and support. Best example is the password for the online interface. It is listed as Admin "BLANK" password "admin"... well you must use admin/admin to get in. After spending 2 hours on that it certainly tainted my view of the product :-). Other then that it is a real pain to change the default IP address for the home network our of the 192.168....
Make sure you turn off Norton firewall and "worm" protection or you won't see it on your network.

5 out of 5 stars The Right Product!.......2007-07-26

Excellent solution for upgrading our older Mac G4 with our new high speed Verizon FIOS internet service. Works without a problem once configured.

5 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted........2007-05-12

This router didn't have any wired ports on the back for wired clients to connect to. The WPN-824 did have those ports. I promptly returned it and bought the WPN-824. You may wonder how anyone could buy the wrong rounter, with the wrong features, and the answer is that the information on whether or not it had wired eithernet ports was not present, so I could not determine if the wpn-824 was the same as the wpn-802. Please buy wisely.

An external wireless network access point for wireless networks based on the IEEE 802.11b standard

Amazon.com Review

The Linksys Instant Wireless Access Point (WAP) serves as communications headquarters for a reliable 11 Mbps wireless network. We found the WAP, used in conjunction with the Linksys Instant Wireless PC Card (and PCI adapter if the wireless card is used in a desktop PC) and a hub or switch, to be a true leader in the move toward wireless networking. In case you're confused, here's a graph illustrating the differences between an access point and a router with access point:

access point vs. router The unit itself is handsome and somewhat reminiscent of the rabbit-ears antenna system used on older televisions. Installing the WAP involves several steps. A USB connection allows for configuration, and installing the USB configuration software allows for monitoring and adjusting settings such as channel, IP address, and service set identifier (SSID). Connecting the unit to a hub or switch using Category 5 cable (which is not included) gives the WAP network access and the ability to begin sending meaningful signals.

The WAP has three indicator lights: Power, link, and activity. The link indicator lights up amber when a link is established with the hub, and the activity light flickers somewhat uncertainly when there is network activity. The antennas can be adjusted left and right, and we found that pointing them in the direction of the wireless computer resulted in a stronger signal.

We found the accompanying user guide somewhat lacking; it gave little guidance on how the network can be configured. And the customer service hotline unfortunately does little more than refer you to your computer's manufacturer. Those who are new to networking may want to bone up on the basics before beginning on a wireless network endeavor--plenty of resources exist on the Web and in print to guide your networking foray. But for those who are transforming an existing wired network into a wireless one, the transition will be fairly painless and straightforward.

In use, the WAP performs well: In the same room, the signal strength to and from the Linksys wireless network card is consistently above 95 percent. We separated the card from the access point by one plaster wall and found that the signal strength was reduced to around 80 percent. Separating them with a closeted wall pulled the signal strength down to about 50 percent. At opposite ends of the home (with numerous plaster walls between), the signal strength maintains at about 35 percent.

The rate of data transmission declines proportionately, starting at an ideal 11 Mbps and dropping to 3 or 4 Mbps at extreme distance and separation. While still reliable, the main difference in performance we noticed was in the basic data-transmitting functions: Slower copying, pasting, opening, and access of resources on other network nodes. While these speeds don't lend themselves well to intensive LAN game play, they are suitable for sharing data between resources, as well as sharing print resources.

Overall, the Linksys wireless package is optimal for those not wishing to string cable throughout a home or office. While performance and speed are comparable to slower wired networks, this is a ready solution for those who need a world without wires, for whatever reason. This package is also ideal for those who are comfortable with networking configurations and troubleshooting, and are ready to take the leap into wireless. --Emilie Dirks

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere--without wires. Outside of the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, and airports--great when you're on the road and need to get some work done.

  • 802.11b
  • 802.11a
  • 802.11g

4 out of 5 stars Slow but reliable.......2007-08-31

This linksys product has worked for me reliably under a variety of conditions. I would recommend these units to anyone trying to make a short range wireless bridge or a wifi hotspot.

Your Lowest Price has the best customer service. I love buying from this company,

1 out of 5 stars What a failure..........2006-06-08

I bought two of those and I could have written a 5 star review back then, like many people did. Out of the box, its a joy...but after less than 2 years, the failed one after the other and Linksys support said this was common hardward failure. A big waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Does anyone know what Version Amazon is selling here?.......2005-10-07

There is no mention of it and the manual appears to be for a different version than what is on Linksys's website. There doesn't appear to be anyway to ask Amazon a question about this.

3 out of 5 stars Good For What it does, Bad Documentation.......2005-09-16

I was told by a Linksys Rep that this item can be used extend the range of my network. After wasting many hours with Technical people that did not know what they were taliking about I spoke to a level 2 technition who explained that the purpose of this device is to plug into a wired network and enable it to be wireless. What I needed was a range extender. I Did use it for my wired network at work and it does work for that purpose.

The 802.11g standard supported in this access point, offers up to 54Mbps of transfer speed for fast file transfers and better support of streaming video & other multimedia applications. Older 802.11b equipment is also supported for increased compatibility.

5 out of 5 stars Great AP.......2007-09-17

I got this to expand my wireless to the other side of the house and it works great. I had the WGR614 wireless router setup already and wanted wireless far away on the other side of the house. The house is already setup with cable run through it so setting this up was a breeze. I connected a cable from the router into the wall and from the wall on the other side of the house plugged a cable into the WG602 Access Point.
Just follow the directions by first connecting the AP to your computer to configure the AP and all is good.

5 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised.......2007-01-18

Works just as advertised. No problems installing or using. Thumbs up.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!.......2006-11-18

Died after 6 months, could not configure. Would only reset to default config which gave no security. Worthless. Support was BAD!! Never again for Netgear products!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Bridge.......2006-11-11

This thing is handy as it will do a variety of things. It works as an access point but you can also put it in bridge mode which is quite handy. I got one for my dad and I have one as well so we can connect our PS2's to the internet. Works like a charm.

2 out of 5 stars bridging use.........2006-06-12

I bought this product to use it as a bridging client in an existing belkin wireless network and it failed to pass any data even though it showed connected to the belkin Access point. According to the Netgear docs this access point can operate as a access point or as a bridging client but what the fail to tell you is that it bridges only in a netgear environment. After spending 20 mins on the phone with Netgear they told me i needed to buy a different model which is non netgear-proprietary or more netgear access points....

How can a company like this be selling proprietary hardware in todays day and age...

5 out of 5 stars Works as expected and more!.......2007-08-14

I love the product.

Out of the box, it discovered my network, provided security credentials, and connected every system (3 wired, 5 wireless, and a network printer) to my home network. It has provided better range, and I have experienced virtually no lag in connecting from desktop to laptops and Wi-Fi Windows Mobile smartphones.

For the SOHO/small business user, the confidence in knowing that this product has earned a Certified for Windows Vista logo, should provide added peace of mind.

On the back end, this product utilizes Windows Rally Technologies, which allows it to seamlessly discover and connect securely to Windows Vista clients.

In fact, the entire setup process is as easy as:

A) connect the device to your PC with an Ethernet cable,
B), power on the device
C) open the Network folder on your Vista PC and
D) double click the discovered router (it will show up as an un-configured wireless device).

That's it.

You should then be guided through the Windows Connect Now wizard which will create a wireless profile for your device, store it on your PC and push it to the Buffalo router. The Network folder will automatically discover the device for you (without you ever knowing the IP address or opening IE). Further, you never have to know your security settings. The Windows Connect Now wizard will create a passphrase for you. All you'll need to supply is the name of your network.

5 out of 5 stars No Sweat - Right Out of the Box.......2007-08-12

I'm no geek but I know quality when I see it and use it. Buffalo's Wireless-N duel band gigabit router and wireless access point is without question the best router I've ever used or seen for home use. Straight out of the box, I had a wired gigbyte network up and running, transferring files and accessing the internet on every wired connection in 15 minutes. The wireless network took a little more time as I had never installed one before but I had my notebook with wireless G Internet and network connectivity up in probably 30 minutes.

And I was done with my weekend project!

Unlike other reviewers here, I have found the Buffalo Wireless N's connectivity range nothing short of outstanding! The house is approximately 2,300 square feet and I have coverage in every room, inclusive of the garage. Moreover, from the hammock in the back yard to the sidewalk in front of the next door neighbor's house this router delivered outstanding wireless connectivity with my wireless G notebook. (Can't say anything about the range of wireless N here, but wireless G with this router has exceeded my expectations). Just remember a little up front planning goes a long way. I placed the router on some new shelves so the router and wireless antenna is approximately 6 feet off the ground in my office.

But speed and connectivity is just the beginning. This is one well engineered product. The embedded on-line set-up documentation that accompanies this product is second to none. Absolutely head and shoulders above my Linksys product. I also appreciate the well documented lights on the front panel of this router! You can actually check status and see what is going on with this router - This is a far cry from the Christmas tree ornamentation effect that came with my Linksys router -You know.. Looks fancy but tells you absolutely nothing unless you can dig out the manual - Good Luck! (I'm sure that somewhere the geeks at Cisco are laughing)

On the down side, with only four wired gigabyte Ethernet ports I think this router is expensive for a home unit. Sure, you have the wireless N access point combined into the router but it really would have added value to have a couple of additional Ethernet ports considering the price.

The way I see it, the quality is good, the documentation is great and the performance of this rig commands two thumbs way up! You're getting what you're paying for here and don't you wish everything in life was that easy?

So if you're not Geek-Squad oriented or Cisco certified and are looking for a quality router that delivers the goods without breaking a sweat this is your router!

1 out of 5 stars Stick with Linksys G.......2007-08-01

Planned on buying a linksys wireless G router and separate access point to fix wireless gaps in the house .. was convinced to buy an N .. a buffalo N despite reading the write-ups on their problems .. geek told me N is the only way to go .. My wireless range decreased and my DSL throughput was 3-5 times less than with my current B router !! needless to say, I'm going back to my original G plan ... and will stick to Linksys

1 out of 5 stars Looks cool.......2007-07-31

Product looks cool, very consistant in that it drops connections on a frequent basis, range is not what one would think with something that is being touted as top of the line.

5 out of 5 stars At Last a Router That Does What IT Says It Will Do........2007-02-27

I am an itinerant collector of wireless N routers - not intentionally, but because EVERY other wireless N router simply fails to deliver. Either the wireless has no range, needs constant re-booting and actually FALLS APART (D-Link) or it has slow router connections and its performance slowly fades away (Linksys) until it finally dies. To date, the best of the lot have been the Belkin Pre-N routers, although wireless throughput is not close to what is advertised.

When I saw this router at Fry's, I bought it (for more than Amazon charges) and figured I could return it if it did not perform.

This router is amazing. To start, the new installation protocols it supports made installation a snap. I inputed my static ip info and had an internet connection literally in seconds, a FIRST for me. The router connections are FAST, 10/100/1000 FAST. Its wireless coverage is superb. It reaches all of my various wireless connections (both g and n) and connects at 100mb+ speeds. While I do not use this particular function, the router allows for configuring specific gaming ports for maximum gaming performance. It also supports all the new security protocols and can be configured as a straight access point for existing network use.

While this wireless router is far from inexpensive, its ease of use and setup as well as performance makes it a screaming bargain.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product.......2007-08-10

I bought the +v version which also offers a wireless connection to a printer. This device provided one hundred percent functionality right out of the box. Excellent support at the web site for connection to the internet and a printer. Works with a small internet provider: shentel.net.

The only downside: the web accelerator offered free by my ISP does not work. The accelerator interpets the wifi connection to the WiFlyer as having broadband width and thus no need of a dialup accelerator. I'm just starting to trouble shoot this. Worst case: I may have to buy the accelerator from WiFlyer.

5 out of 5 stars Not stuck in the office.......2007-05-13

The Wiflyer wireless works great! Had to call to get some help at
first as I'm on AOL which always has a complication it seems. After that
got figured out...have had no problems.
its wonderful not to be stuck in my office. I can move to another
room to use my computer and even watch TV while waiting for websites
to download...I still have dial-up!!!! We live in a remote area!!

3 out of 5 stars POTENTIALLY.......2007-03-18

THIS DID NOT WORK AND HAS TO BE REPLACED. BOUGHT FOR MY NIECE BECAUSE LOVE MY OWN WHICH I'VE HAD FOR YEARS NOW. IT WORKS SO WELL AND ELIAS IN TECH IS SO KIND AND HELPFUL IN HELPING TO SET UP AND HAVE A REPLACEMENT SENT IF NEED BE.

SMALL AND ATTRACTIVE AND EASILY TRANSPORTED ON THE JOURNEY.

2 out of 5 stars UPDATE: My WiFlyer works again after a 'Hard Reset'.......2007-01-16

I bought this in early November of 2005 before a trip I took in December. I only needed to use it once with an Earthlink dial-up account. Worked fine. Once. After that, it remained in safe storage away from heat, away from cold, away from the sun, away from handling. In fact, it was stored safely in my laptop travel case, which was stored safely in a closet. No one could have bothered it, since I live alone. I did not need to use again until 6 weeks ago. When I got the Wiflyer out and plugged it in ... NO wireless signal. None. Kaput. My laptop connected just fine to other wireless, just not the Wiflyer because there was NO SIGNAL AT ALL, so there was NOTHING TO CONNECT TO. The little wireless LED in the middle front of the unit does not come on. Of course, the unit is no longer under warranty, so that's the end of that.

Honestly, I think the product is just not well made. The concept was excellent, and yours may work for you for a while, just as mine did. But I wouldn't expect this to last for very long if used frequently. Perhaps some sort of minor jostling caused the unit to fail? I'll never know. And I sure won't buy another one.

***** UPDATE *****

I emailed techsupport at [...] about my difficulty with the wireless LED staying off and no wireless signal being broadcast. I was informed that I could return the WiFlyer to its factory default settings using the following procedure to initiate a "Hard Reset":

-----------

(1) Unplug the power connection from the rear of the WiFlyer, then

(2) Hold down the top button (with the lightning bolt), then

(3) Continue holding this lightning-bolt button and

(4) Plug power back into the WiFlyer, and then

(5) Continue holding the button down while the WiFlyer cycles its 5 LED lights on top from right to left, then all LEDs will go solid on. There will then be three beeps, and then the unit will cycle through the LED lights again, and WHEN THE MIDDLE LIGHT (the wireless LED) COMES ON, RELEASE THE LIGHTNING-BOLT BUTTON.

-----------

That's it. It brought my WiFlyer back to life and it functions normally again.

I did notice that when the unit is used to connect my laptop via wireless to my broadband modem that I did not see the higher internet download speeds that I see when connected directly to the cable modem via ethernet. I believe this is probably just a limitation of 802.11b in operation.

5 out of 5 stars WiFlyer is absolutely Slick!.......2007-01-13

After hooking up WiFi for a DSL network, I expected the WiFlyer set-up to take a while. But when I opened the box, I saw that the quick start-up intructions were easy to follow. I plugged everything in as described and went back to the instructions to see how to open or launch a connection. When I looked back at the unit, it was already showing a connection on the indicator lights. Still skeptical about dialing up the ISP, I launched Internet Explorer. Instead of going to my home page, it went to a WiFlyer screen asking for the typical dial-up info, such as ISP phone number, user name and password. Once it connected, my home page displayed. On subsequent launches, the WiFlyer screen remembered (by cookie) the phone number and user name. There can't possibly be a better way to provide WiFi for a dial-up connection.

3 out of 5 stars Does the job, but..........2007-09-14

It (or a combination of it and my wireless router) intereferes with bluetooth. Now if I want to use the bluetooth on my phone, I have to unplug all this stuff ;(. VERY ANNOYING!!! Installation took 3 hours with 2 different reps. D-link customer service is outstanding, by the way. Also, my download speed seems to be limited to 75 kbps on the WAP end. Upload is more than double that, which is wierd. Looks like I need another few hours on the phone with tech support.

Bottom line...works kinda well when you actually get it set up. However, getting it set up can be an exercise in patience. Expensive for the speeds I'm seeing :(

5 out of 5 stars Flexible and Secure.......2007-09-03

I have tried several different units (entry level) for bridging and these units were the only ones that allowed me to setup a bridge with WPA2. Lots of options for various types of setups and very stable. The stock ant. provided a good connection, but since these will only be bridging 2 networks, I also grabbed a set of DWL-M60AT Directional Indoor Antenna's to limit my broadcast area and boost my signal strength. I bought a few extra units to use as Access Points and they have good coverage & stability. They are a few bucks more more than some other units on the market, but you get what you pay for!

1 out of 5 stars D-Link = Bad quality = terrible customer support.......2007-08-28

Too bad I cannot give d-link 0 stars. Several hours on my own, then 3 hrs with customer's support - level one - from India, then level 2 from US, then supervisors of level 2 - doesn't work. Just bought linksys - setup in 5 minutes, works great. Conclusion - I will never buy d-link again, and wouldn't recommend you either.

5 out of 5 stars this is an excellent product.......2007-06-27

this access point is very fast, faster than my cable connection. it has a great range and it is very easy to set up, plug and play.

4 out of 5 stars Good value........2007-03-09

We purchased two of these AP's to use for a point to point bridge, using 24 db gain antennas over about a quarter mile hop. We mounted the AP's in weathertight 8"x8"x4" boxes along with dLink POE's, all outdoors on a mast just behind the antennas. This eliminated the need to extend the Antenna's wires inside. It also eliminated considerable loss we would have encountered in running longer antenna wires.

The units have worked flawlessly since install. Our daytime high temperatures were 100 degrees max, winter low temperatures have been -20 degrees. We are operating at the minimal power setting for the AP-2100 without suffering throughput, put there is no way of verifying this.

If I could have one more feature, it would be some sort of signal strength indicator, along with some way of testing for data throughput.

Nevertheless, I would recommend a similar installation to anyone needing to bridge two LAN's together. We have just purchased a third DWL-2100 as a backup because we've gotten quite hooked on the system and would now be distressed if it should go out (due to lightning, etc.) So the the third unit is a backup, still sealed in its origional box.

5 out of 5 stars GET THIS PRODUCT!!!!! DO NOT LISTEN TO THE IDIOTS COMPLAINING!.......2007-08-24

I'm dead serious. Tis is a great product. i was stupid enough to listen to these morons that don't know how to set up a wireless router and go with a dlink di-784. Man was i dumb. that router caused nothing but lockups, and screwed up my cable modem, even after the firmware upgrades i did. I am happy i bought this product. Set up was a breeze and simple. follow it step by step as it says on the cd. although i didnt have to,but i did anyways, upgrade the firmware. as there is always something that is updated by anybody. and if your cable modem has a reset button, reset or powercycle the modem! thne everything will work! everything was set up in a matter of minutes and very easy to use!

1 out of 5 stars This thing is a hunk of garbage........2007-08-14

Completly unreliable. Drops the connection at least once a week and requires power cycling, until it gets to the point where it just doesn't work anymore. Wireless connections are hit or miss, and the wired connections also tend to drop out. I can't believe a company is allowed to sell a product this awful. Linksys should refund every customer that wasted their time and money with this junk.

1 out of 5 stars Great when it stays connected - too bad it rarely does that........2007-08-06

I am never buying another Linksys product again. The Linksys support forums are full of people complaining about their routers, seems like pretty much all of them, disconnecting for no reason and they offer no help.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible router, probably the worst produced today.......2007-07-25

Amazon did their portion, the seller did send the item faster (still slow by todays standards) than usual with any Amazon company. Do not buy this router, the other stories of poor connection quality on WIRED ports is true. Wireless is virtually worthless unless you configure a specific frequency to use, then it still drops regularly, even when sitting 2ft from the router. I thought I had upgraded from a D-Link, now I am back to using what works and am stuck with this pile of garbage and out the money. DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER, THERE ARE BETTER AVAILABLE.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but with a fatal flaw.......2007-07-23

I picked-up this router to replace my old Linksys wired router. It worked very well for both my wired computers and my wireless laptop. I got "excellent" or "very good" signal strength on the "G" network everywhere in my house. (I have no "A" devices, so I turned off that feature.)

The problem occurred when I tried to VPN into my office. This router does not support NAT-T, which is required for the Nortel VPN system my office uses. The only solutions are to have the IT dept reconfigure the office's VPN (ain't happening) or switch to another router, such as the WRT54G.
