I bought this about a month ago to replace my old 900mHz analog cordless phone at home. I don't use the phone very much at home; probably about 30~60 minutes a day. So far, very satisfied with the phone. But here are the things I noticed:

1. Very good sound quality. Hard to tell whether it's a cordless phone or not. Also, I love the volume control button in the middle which I can easily adjust with my thumb as I talk depending on the volume of noise in the surrounding area. The handset's ear piece volume control has 3 different levels of volume.

2. Speaker phone feature. Although not full duplex (I wouldn't expect that anyway at this price range), it works almost flawlessly. Speaker phone feature both at the handset and at the base. Both are very good. The volume level of the handset speaker phone feature has 6 different levels and the base speaker phone had 8 different levels. Also, switching to/from regular handset use with the ear piece and from/to the handset speakerphone feature is very easy; just press the "talk" button to use the ear piece and "sp-phone" to use it as a speaker phone.

3. Ear phone jack is also available on the handset. This is also very useful.

4. The key pad on the base is also very handy. I can use the base as a phone even if I don't have the handset, i.e., if and when I misplace the handset (although the handset would be easy to find with the locator function) or if and when the handset's battery dies.

5. Small foot print of the base is also a plus.

6. Good range. I also tested the range. I walked around the block to see how well it worked in the neighborhood. With a clear view to my house (wooden structure), I could be about 100 steps away and still get a clear reception. When multiple buildings were in between, the range was only about 30~40 yards (my guess). But from inside of my detached garage, there was no problem at all. I think I should be able to use this phone from inside of my neighbor's house, which is located about 20 feet away from my house.

7. Answering machine is simple to use.

8. Battery life is shorter than my old analog phone. My old analog phone, on stand by, lasted about 2 weeks. I think this one lasts about a week on stand by.

Just got it and have started using it, so far so good. I got it mainly for the FHSS, but the battery in the handset seems kind of weak already... Sound on regular talk is good, speakerphone volume is weak. Ok for the money.

This phone's sound and communication quality are very good, feature rich, the review is mainly focus on it's down side though, battery related.

1. The phone eat battery. If I leave the battery not on the baseset (as suggested by the manual that extend batter life), the battery only last less than 2 hours of talking (in less than two days, not much standby power consumption), without even using boost clarity and voice enhancement feature. This is well below the manufacture suggested figure.

This is verified on two separate authentic panasonic batteries, so the chance that I came across an odd here is very small.

I purchased additional battery in case I need to backup in the middle of phone call. Then funny thing happened :

2. If you replace a near empty battery with a fully charged one, the handset battery indicator remain in low-battery state (so in this case, you will notice your phone "appears to be amazingly" run in low battery for two hours.

3. conversely, if you replace a fully charged battey with a nearly empty battery, the battery indicator remain in full battery state, until the battery is suddenly gone from full to null in seconds.

If you decide to use this phone, do purchase a few batteries, and let the handset remain on the baseset whenever not used (although not recommended by the manual that suggest will shorten the battery life) until tha battery cannot be used anymore.

Great for my surround speakers.......2007-01-05

I bought two pair of these speakers to act as the side and rear speakers in my media room. I have a Denon AVR-3806 7.1 CH Receiver driving my setup. I don't think I'm pushing these as hard as I could, but I'm very satisfied when either listening to CDs or 5.1 encoded DVD soundtracks.

They were very easy to install, with a minimum of tools and fuss. Because of the layout of my room, I had to mount them higher then optimal, but the speaker can be slightly adjusted to 'point' the sound.

For my application, I don't think I could beat the price and performance.

For the previous guy who needed the impedence, they are 8 ohm speakers (pretty much the standard and he could have downloaded the user's manual to find this out if he was so inclined).

The speakers come with a wall cutting template that makes it easy to cut the exact hole size needed for the speakers. For an exterior wall with insulation, you may need to buy a wall box to back up the speaker to provide some airspace behind the speaker.

You can paint these to match the wall and they end up looking very nice.

Great value for the price. I paid $40 for the pair, shipped.

Excellent way to add USB 2.0 and Firewire to your set up. Works as advertised and, most importantly, it works flawlessly with the 2.6 series Linux kernel. Linux supports ohci, uhci, and ehci on the USB side and also supports firewire. Easy to install, too.

Fast but Flawed; Mac users should avoid!.......2005-03-21

I purchased the Adaptec AUA-3230 DuoConnect card at my local retailer for use with my "Quicksilver" model Power Mac G4 (Dual 1GHz). My built-in ports had gone flakey so I wanted a quality PCI expansion card to replace their functionality. Adaptec used to make some of the fastest SCSI cards around, so I decided to give their product a try. I picked the DuoConnect so I could get some USB 2.0 ports while I was at it.

Well, it's very fast -- when copying between internal and external devices, it is faster than Apple's built-in FireWire was! Unfortunately, it has problems -- of the crashing sort. When a firewire device is connected and the Mac is put to sleep, it doesn't make it to Deep Sleep mode (fans keep running), and wakes up again. (This happened with both a bus-powered iPod and a self-powered LaCie d2 drive. The LaCie showed truly strange behavior of spinning down, then up, then down, six times in a row before finally stopping!) The only way out is to turn the Mac off. I contacted Adaptec tech support via their web page.

After a brief of confusion in which they thought I was using USB devices, Adaptec support tested the configuration themselves, confirmed the problem, and suggested that I either disable Sleep mode, or return the card to the retailer from which I purchased it. Following are their own words:

In our unofficial testing of the Firewire 4300 and DuoConnect AUA-3121 and AUA-3020, it seems that the controller itself is compatible with Deep Sleep. Yet as soon as any devices are attached to either the USB or FireWire/1394 ports, the system will not be able to recover from the Deep Sleep function.

It appears that this issue is due more to the PCI bus itself rather than to the DuoConnect adapter. When Deep Sleep is initiated, the PCI bus and attached peripherals will be powered down. Yet because the PCI controller is not directly powered from the motherboard, there is no way to send a signal to the attached devices to 'wake' them. This means that a signal can be sent to the attached devices to put them into a power down status, but no signal can be sent to revive them from that state. For that reason the Firewire and DuoConnect card is not fully compliant with Apple's Deep Sleep.

What you may want to do at this point is to open up the Energy Saver control panel and set the power settings to "never" to disable Sleep. Yet if this is not an option, then unfortunately there is no workaround for this issue and you may want to return the controller to the place of purchase for a refund.

We apologize for the delay in getting this information to you. It did take some time to replicate the issue and search for a possible solution. We hope that you understand.

So, in summary: very fast FireWire 400/USB 2.0 card, but useless if your Power Mac ever sleeps. Adaptec's tech support was prompt and didn't send me "form letter" style replies, so props for that! I'll try Adaptec again in the future due to their support team (it's also why I give this card 2 stars instead of just 1), but I'll always beware and make sure there is a good return policy, just in case.

After shopping around for a Firwire card I finally found this huge deal! 3-Port USB and 2-Port Firewire for only $19.99! DO NOT pay full price for this item. Go to the used and new, there is a new one for $19.99. It takes a little longer to ship out, but this is a great deal.

This item takes about 3 secs to install with XP...all you do is put it in, and you're ready. I was up burning dvds within 5 mins.

flawless installation.......2004-07-23

I was a bit nervous about buying this card after reading some of the reviews published here on Amazon, but I did anyway--I wanted to upgrade my computer's USB jacks, and I wanted firewire for the convenience of using that with my iPod.

At any rate, my fears went unrealized. Installation under Windows XP went without a hitch: the thing was ready to go five minutes after I opened the box. I can't say I've tried it under different operating systems, but under XP, it's a dream.

I've had one of these ugly little beauties for over 3 years and it still won't quit! On average I reckon I've listened to it about once per day for that whole time. I've also dropped it so many times I've lost count, and spilt water and coffee on it (a 12 hour dry out and it was working again). I've changed the rechargeable batteries once or twice, with generic replacements from Tandy. My only gripe with it is that the circuitry has become a bit more noisy over time (leading to audible interference during playback). I didn't even realise it had a built-in microphone until I read the reviews here today - so it's gone up in my estimation once more!

Rarely works.......2005-03-29

I have used my device rarely for 2 yrs, sent it for service but with little improvement. Problem seems to be that it can't do anything useful like sound recording or connecting to computer while batteries are charging, and the charging takes 15 hours while useful time is 1-2 hours.

It's been almost 2 years since I bought this mp3 player... and I bought it used, so who knows how long it had been used before that, and under what conditions.

Two weeks ago, I got new batteries for the player, as the included batteries had gotten down to about 2.5 hours of play time. I bought a set of 4 Energizer batteries here on amazon (they're relatively cheap here too!), and now, i probably get 12 hours of battery life.

I used to get worried when my player got down to about 30% battery life. Now i see that and i think "oh well, i'll charge it tomorrow night or something." So that's amazing.

The harddrive is almost full. I've got about 1 gig left. Every CD i own is on this player right now, along with a bunch of DJ mixes and whatnot. I'm hoping to get a 40gig laptop harddrive and replace the 20 sometime soon. Just a note, I own probably 300-400 CDs... so... it wasn't easy to fill this thing.

Also, if you've got this player, you should consider getting the iM2 speakers from Altec Lansing (get them here, and get them used, if you're smart). Those things get really loud for the size, and the color scheme actually matches the Archos! It's replaced my boombox in one swoop, and made vacations music-filled again.

For playlists, I recommend Winamp. Its free and easy. I just started getting into playlist making, and there's NOTHING like hopping into your car, hitting play, and knowing you've got 250 songs from various artists coming in random order (shuffle, of course).

So to wrap this up, I'll give you some essentials that I've learned from using this player over the years:

1) Download RockBox, and use it. The list of improvements is a mile long, and not subtle. For one, it shortens the time from power on to playing from about 30 seconds, to about 4.

2) Altec Lansing iM2 speakers

3) for car use, your options at this point are:
a) cassette adapter
b) in-dash cd player with Aux In (i got one! woo!)
c) fm transmitter (dont get this, it is a WASTE of money, and a gimmick to boot)

4) can anyone find a slightly more attractive carrying case than the "fanny pack" looking one that comes with it? that would be golden.

All in all, a great player, very durable, very upgradable, not for the computer illiterate.

I have had mine for about a year and a half now. It is reliably unreliable. There are bad sectors on the drive (apparently of Hitachi manufacture), which are uncorrectable and often result in unrecoverable data. The drive seems to panic unpredictably during data transfers (clicks, thrashes, locks up my computer for minutes at a time or until I reboot it), even when it is fully powered up and has been connected to the power cable for hours. This is the least reliable hard drive I've ever seen.

I bought it because it was supposed to be easier to see this drive in Linux than the Creative or Apple MP3 players. I also liked the idea that you can download the open-source Rockbox software to improve the functionality of the player. I wish now that I had just paid the premium for a better designed product. The factors on which I based my purchasing decision are moot if the product itself doesn't work for squat. I'm staying away from Archos from now on and hoping I don't get burned the next time I pick an MP3 player.

Dated Jukebox Still Satisfies.......2004-12-04

Though it's getting kind of dated already (gee, has it already been two years?), the Archos Jukebox Recorder 20 is still my favorite electronics device I own. It has incredible sound for an MP3 player, let me say. I love its look and feel and the navigation is very user friendly and natural, in my opinion. It also seems to be quite sturdy, as I've dropped it several times without a problem.

Also, a note about its versatility: The early Jukebox models like this are really nice for people who are into customizable music collections, variable bit rate MP3s, etc. If you want to also, you can download the Rockbox hack for the Jukebox. It's basically an open source OS for the Jukebox that replaces the lackluster ARCHOS software. This adds much capability to your player, including gaming software, added functionality, battery life extension, customizeable sound, etc. Just do a search for it online.

PROS:

- Wonderful full-spectrum sound.
- Large storage space (it might as well have been unlimited for me)
- Great for people who are in to customizing their MP3 collection, using open source, etc.
- Easy menu system
- Batteries are replaceable, so you could keep it forever.

CONS:
- Heavy, heavy, heavy
- Initial software is limited, though Rockbox software is great.
- ARCHOS product support is bad, from what I know.
