Canon's update to the PowerShot S100, the PowerShot S110, packs a high-quality digital camera into the tiny, elegant body of Canon's Digital Elph series. The idea behind the Elph line is simple: create a camera small enough to slip into a shirt pocket, so you can take it anywhere. To improve upon the impressive specs of the original, Canon upgraded the image processor, making it both faster and more effective in maximizing color fidelity and saturation. Additionally, the S110 has the ability to record QuickTime movies. A new, tiny microphone is embedded in the front of the camera.

The basics include 2-megapixel resolution (1,600 x 1,200 image resolution) for high-quality photos and prints up to 8 by 10 inches; an all-glass aspherical 2x zoom lens (and a 2.5x digital zoom as well). A 1.5-inch LCD monitor displays most camera settings with easy-to-understand icons and minimal text. The built-in flash uses a light guide and does not need a Fresnel lens or a large reflector, making the camera even more compact.

The PowerShot S110 stores images on an included 8 MB CompactFlash card. Adobe PhotoDeluxe and PhotoStitch control image management, editing, compositing, and printing, while ZoomBrowser EX or ImageBrowser produce self-running screen slide shows, automatic e-mail preparation, and auto layout. The camera uses a high-speed plug-and-play USB interface, plus it has NTSC-out so you can view your photos on your TV. It's fully compatible with both Mac and PC platforms.

This is an AMAZING LITTLE CAMERA. I have had mine for probably five years and have never been disappointed in it. I have an extra battery that I have on charge and switch back and forth when the one in the camera is getting low. This camera is small but packed with power. It's easily tucked in a pocket or a fanny pack on vacation. There is no fumbling when it comes to using it. Turn it on, point and shoot - easy as that. The pictures are crisp and clear. I hope this review helps. I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this camera.

I got this camera as a replacement for my giant (but wonderful) film camera when it first came out. It was great to just stick it in my purse and go. After a couple months the LCD screen stopped working. Even when I took a picture it would come up black on my computer. I sent it back to Canon and they fixed it. Wish it would've worked right the first time around.

There's a lag between when you hit the button and when it actually takes the picture (results in some funny-looking posed pictures because people think the picture's already been taken!). It doesn't take very good indoor photos (flash looks harsh, doesn't focus well). And action shots are kind of a problem unless they're from a distance. The colors don't seem very true-to-life.

I just got a photo printer and printed out a lot of photos taken with this camera and a few taken with a friend's newish Sony 4 megapixel camera. His photos were all much sharper and had much truer color.

I love my Canon Powershot S110. I've had it for about 2 and a half years now and it still works like it did when it was brand new. I've seen the latest Powershot Digital Elph (Ixus) cameras, and sure they are improvements on the S110, but there's something about the S110's heavy metallic casing that makes it long-lasting and extremely durable, perhaps more durable than the latest in this product line. The picture quality is great, comparable to the latest Digital Elphs. I've taken this camera to Europe and back, twice, to Japan, and across the US, always carrying it in my front pants pocket. I'm not planning to buy a new digital camera until my S110 stops working, which probably won't be for a long time.

I've had this camera for almost two years and I love it.

It's the perfect first camera for users who are comfortable with technology. There are simpler (and cheaper) cameras for people who are less compfortable with technology.

This one packs the right amount of sophistication in features, and simplicity in usage - and all that in one small little bundle!

It's strong points:
* small.
* light.
* solid (dropped mine a couple of times and its still going strong).
* good zoom.
* good battery life.
* auto-flash - which is so helpful for amateurs like myself who are never sure about how much light is enough.
* some more advanced ones (manual flash, timer, etc.) if you want to experiment and improve your skills.
* comes with software to download and retouch your photos, rendering the process relatively easy.

All in all, this camera and Canon's Powershot line are an excellent choice for most people.

This little camera packs a big punch. The picture quality seems better than 2.1MP. There is only one thing i can complain about, and that is the battery which barely lasts at all.

EASY DOES IT CAMERA.......2001-01-17

I received this camera for a Christmas present. My first digital camera, it's a snap to use. Good quality pictures, easy to use instruction booklet, and conveniently small size are it's best features. The limit of 4 or 8 MB memory cards is a little diassapointing unless one purchases several (they are rather inexpensive). The carrying case is handy and it is thoughtfuly included in the camera package, as is also the software to edit pictures and the serial cable and USB cable. The USB cable makes downloading go pretty fast. A fun, versatile, convenient camera.

Quick Fun.......2001-01-07

I received this as a Christmas present, not to replace my "old" camera, but as another way to play with the computer and photos. It is very easy to use and to hook up to your computer is a breeze. It is very small however, and you need to hold it very steady. It only came with a 4MB memory card, and can only go up to 8MB, but as I said before it's great for quick fun and creativity with software like PhotoExpress etc.

Works Great - Setup Could Be Easier.......2003-03-09

Our Business owns 2 Bluettoth Access Points. The AXIS model and a unit from Red-M. The AXIS model works great, but requires you to manually set the IP address of the AP by entering the MAC address using Ping on the command line. This could be made a little easier, by having a USB interface as the Red-M unit does.

After obtaining the IP address of the Access Point, you use a simple web interface for configuration...very easy. Many of our staff have Pocket PCs and they really find it convenient to use Bluetooth and our Access Points.

discontinued slide holder.......2004-09-30

I love this scanner, but I am very disappointed with Canon right now. I called them to purchase additional slide and film holders, and I was told that the slide holders are no longer available. I have been searching for weeks trying to find a slide holder. I bought this scanner to specifically scan my slides. If anyone knows where I can purchase slider holders for the CanoScan FS4000US please let me know. I really like this scanner, but I am very disappointed right now.

Very Satisfied.......2004-06-02

I've been using the FS4000 since January. I previously had a 2400dpi Minolta DImage II(I believe!) that kept on freezing up and was exceptionally slow. I can't comment in absolute terms about the speed of the FS4000 but it is certainly way faster than the old Minolta. My deduction of one star (more properly about 1/2 a star)is due to the fact the scanner still seems like it could be a lot faster - perception only, maybe, but still....

I have been scanning slides at the highest resolution with the noise reduction on but no color management or adjustments made during scanning (preferring to work on the scanned image in Photoshop). Overall scan quality is excellent with no issues from a functional or performance perspective from any of the approx. 1000 scans done to date. The noise reduction capabilities are the primary benefit I notice in that the time spent touching up dust and minor scratches afterwards is very very minor (and usually due to forgetting to clean the slides in the first place!). Color balance and detail resolution are far superior to what I experienced beforehand. Desk footprint is great and noise level while scanning is comfortable.

If I had any complaint at all it is that the scans can reveal problems in the original image such as a lack of sharpness in some areas of the image due to me using lower quality lenses in the old days - such problems don't show up quite so easily either when viewing the slides through a loupe or after the 2400dpi scans - serves me right for using cheap glass, I guess.

Good But Not Great.......2004-03-09

This is a very good scanner. The FARE system has worked well for me and that is the reason I bought it. I have the HP PhotoSmart S20 as well. While the scanners are roughly in the same price range, each has its strengths and weaknesses. The FS4000US is SLOWER and the images have more grain than the S20, but the images appear sharper, with better color depth. As to speed, I don't have to spend hours removing dust and scratches manually. And a neat s/w package called "NeatImages" workes wonders with the grain. Bottom line, total processing time is quicker with the FS400US, and the finished product is noticably better.

A Great Scanner, But... You Get What You Pay For.......2002-02-16

Given the price, this is a great film scanner. But, it's not perfect.

First, it produces wonderful images with color depths up to 42 bits. Its scratch-removal system (FARE) works well (within limitations), and it seems reasonably quick (though I have nothing with which to compare it). Since it supports both SCSI-2 and USB, its versatility is hard to find - even in more expensive models. Setup was a snap. I just plugged it into my (Windows ME) USB port, added the software and voila!

There are some limitations: Unlike competing Nikon models, there are no accessories. And the scanner is made for 35mm only (slides, negatives and APS). As I said above, FARE seems to work very well. But if a negative is too scratched, the software will fail and may even hang your system.
