Nice camera.......2007-09-23

Canon S1 IS is a great camera and as promised by various digi cam review sites, it is good for people in the intermediate range, i.e. between rookie (point and shoot) and pro (SLR and costly lens). Overall performance is great, focus, pic quality, battery consumption, ergonomics etc.

Some people say it is bulky but remember what all it is capable of, so i dont mind it.

However there are 2 things that become an irritation overtime......

1] It takes ages to focus fast moving objects (like jumping Dolphins in Sea World or flying jets in an Air show). I have seen better performance in simple $120 worth digi cams!!

2] Within the 1st 2 months there were 5 dead pixels (now it is 8 months since I bought the camera - no new dead pixels).

A Little of Everything.......2007-08-19

The S1 is the only camera I could find with a fairly high power zoom that also has a waterproof box which can be bought separately (no, it does not fit the S3). Although the retail price is a bit steep, I found a used camera with cleaning kit, filters, 3x lens, wide angle lens, etc. I ended up paying nearly $500 but I have a very versatile camera which I don't plan to replace for a long time. 3.2 mp works fine up to printer size paper. 2500 mah nimh batteries last plenty long enough and custom white blanking allows impressive low light pictures. I mostly use the auto setting because I still haven't explored all of the features explained in the manual.

Excellent camera for beginner or advanced.......2007-06-01

I've had this camera for more than 2 years and I'm ready to upgrade to the s3 version although this camera is still working great after years of moderate-heavy use as our "family camera". Although the size isn't all that convenient, it's fantastic movie mode means you can sell your camcorder. I have a professional Canon that I use in my wedding business, but this is in the bag for a backup situations and short video clips. If you practice in the creative modes, adjusting white balance, ect, not only will you get better, more creative photos-making this easy to use camera fun for an amateur photographer- you'll overcome the low-light situation mentioned in other reviews. Also I have lots of great photos from family trips taken in dark caves, around campfires and Disney at night. Just read the manual and use the right mode for the situation. A common mistake is using the portrait at night mode instead of the action at night in the auto modes.

We had good times.......2007-04-22

VERY sensitive to cold weather. Pouts and does not put its lens out if left in the JEEP overnight in Montana even if it's spring and there's only a light flurry that evening. I was just getting everything set perfectly (yes, it's taken me 4 years) when the lens quit extending. It is now a paperweight or doorknob art. It does still read cards...a plus, for door knob art, I think. I saw one person whose camera didn't work for them in the winter very well at all, mine worked fine while dog sledding and other great times in Montana and this camera moved from Florida all at once.

Shooting it fully automatic as you would with a cheap compact, you miss out on many of the features, not to mention: many good photos from dawn through a dimly lit club in the wee hours~~all without flash. If you can read the manual, you can work this camera, which has ways to personalize settings without worries as you can always "return to default" without concern.
Mine enjoyed over exposing when running free on fully automatic in full on daylight. I wish it would had been better at identifying moving targets and selecting shorter exposures, even in rapid mode.

These problems aside, the camera itself is capable of very good photos. Be advised, this could be a point and shoot, but to get the photos that you really want, decisions must be made! I don't believe this is for the casual photographer that is only interested in point-and-shoot. A feel for the basic photography concepts: using aperture or timing priority or fully manual; knowing what effects ISO and exposure compensation, etc. These will all be explained enough in the manual for you to operate the camera enough to enjoy it, I think. If you know how to use Picasa, the simplest way to add UV filter, I think, you don't even need to buy the proprietary click in version to actually place on the camera to make your photos look more appealing and professional. I strongly recommend spending a few hours with the advanced manual and the camera and learning properly how the exposure, white balance and focus controls work. It will really pay off! What you see on the approximately 1 knuckle length wide by about 1.5 knuckle long display screen will be what you get. Though it is difficult to see the itsy bitsy screen in bright daylight, this camera really shines in dim light with help from things like white balance to make sure you don't get the false sepia tone that makes things look so awful in dim light photos and Image Stabilizer mode, which I used even on the tripod, in case I forgot to turn it back on. Either way, this camera ate batteries like a bear on huckleberries. My battery recharger is worn out!! I'll be replacing the camera and the recharge.

All in all, worth the cost of purchasing the camera as a first digital camera. It is bulky, and I did miss out on some great shots because I didn't feel like hauling the camera with me on some particular excursion. I hope my replacement will take shots as nicely.

What a lifesaver!.......2007-09-20

I purchased this item as an emergency "save my stuff!" attempt after a faulty power source nuked my laptop's motherboard.

This item, essentially, turns any 2.5" hard drive into a giant USB drive. Installation wasn't exactly smooth--the aluminum casing wasn't an exact fit, and I had to remove screws from my drive because the heads wouldn't clear the drive to fit inside. That fact aside, it was as easy as sliding the drive into the casing, screwing it shut, and plugging the USB adapter into a working computer. Within seconds, I was accessing all of my files and programs I thought were lost for good!

Installation tweeking aside, this is an EXCELLENT product!

I've bought two of these to get some use out of the older, smaller hard drives from my laptop, and now my wife's MacBook. It works well either way, and was up and running in a matter of minutes. For less than the cost of a "fancy" external drive, you can buy this, and a new internal drive, and accomplish the same thing.

Keep in mind that this model is IDE only, so if you have a newer laptop that you are thinking of upgrading, I'd search out "SATA Enclosure" to find one that will work with the drive that is probably in there. If you are unsure as to whether you have IDE or SATA, you can either check your specs, or run a free application called SIW (System Information for Windows), and look under the hardware section. Good luck.

Solid, effective enclosure.......2007-08-27

This is a small but more than ordinarily solid enclosure for a 2.5 inch drive (non-SATA). It handles up to 100GB drives. I have seen many external drive enclosures for 2.5 inch drives, and most of them are about as confidence-inspiring as a tin can. This feels solid and is very well constructed. The drive installs in seconds. The screws are decent size. It comes with a "Y" shaped USB cable that has 2 plugs on one end in case your drive needs more electricity that a single USB port supplies. I would definitely buy another one. In fact, I may.

Inserting the 2.5 inch hard drive from my failed laptop computer was easy and the reward of being able to retrieve so much potentially lost data was a real bonus. Now the drive is a simple backup for the new laptop and has been completely trouble/error free.

We purchased this enclosure when my wife's laptop fried its motherboard, so that we could rescue her date and get an external HD in the bargain, for our desktop. Installation of the HD into the enclosure was a snap. We had access to the date in about 10 minutes and have been using this HD on the desktop as external storage for about 3 months now. I had a feeling this camera was going to take horrible pictures from the moment I opened the package. It's a light plastic thing with no flash. I definitely recommend it for children who are just starting to take pictures - who don't care about the quality. I spent about an hour trying to make my pictures look good with the software they provide. It still didn't help. If you're looking to get a digital camera for pictures that you wish to look at often and show to other people, don't waste your money on this one.

You get what you pay for..........2001-04-09

...and as far as this camera is concerned, that's not much! This is actually my second purchase of the Argus DC1500; the first one was defectve and had to be returned. This is a nice little camera for a child or someone just starting out, but you definitely won't get the features available on some of the pricier models. For one thing, this camera has no flash, so be prepared to do all of your photographing outdoors! Also, there were no instructions included in either of the two cameras I bought, so I'm basically winging it. There IS an "addendum sheet" explaining the included video and photo software, but what's it an addendum to? I find this camera very difficult to use. As long as it's plugged into the computer I can take pictures, but since there's no flash, they all come out fuzzy and I end up tinkering with the brightness levels just to get a decent result. On the other hand, it's SUPPOSED to run on three AAA batteries, but that option has rarely worked for me. Not sure if it's a problem with the camera or the batteries. In short, I regret purchasing this camera and will most likely be trading it in for a better known and more reliable model. Live and learn!

Great speakers and great price........2000-12-17

Just received these speakers a few days ago... I was impressed. I popped in the Gladiator DVD and tested the speakers. Awesome sound. Very clear dialogue from the center channel and clean sound reproduction from the main and surround speakers. The speakers give just enough bass so that you don't completely lose the low frequencies (it will sound REALLY weird if you don't hear any bass.... I tried that with some full range speakers that delivered absolutely NO bass) when the subwoofer is turned off. The mounting kit is a convenient addition to this package (but it's not the best mounting kit around). Quality sound for a very low price. I think it deserves a 5-star.

I purchased the VS 3.5 speakers with the SW 2 subwoofer.

The 2-way surrounds sound good with accurate reproduction for the size, though I replaced the fronts with 2-way bookshelf speakers for a fuller sound. This is a nice system for the price particularly for a small room. They are well-constructed and even have gold-plated binding posts which accept banana plugs.

The price is a bargain even if you just use for the 2 surrounds and the center. The SW 2 subwoofer is quite good to round out this system.

Good but go with the Ultra Pro.......2006-05-09

The product works fine in any device that lets you see and use the DVD menu on the disc, such as a DVD player, CD-ROM player, or DVD-ROM player. The interface is a bit hokey, but it gets the job done. I like the design and construction of the disc. I do wish that Allsop had included instructions on cleaning the disc itself, which after only a few uses now has streaks of dust on it. I assume that a good CD or DVD cleaner will do the trick, but be careful not to damage those carbon fibers.

In addition to the lens cleaner, which is really the only reason to buy this item, the disc features a few tests for your home theater setup. Those who really want to check or tweak their system have more sophisticated choices available such as Digital Video Essentials.

From the product description above, I thought that this item would work in a home CD player, but so far I have been unsuccessful in that regard. Users who want a true multipurpose lens cleaning solution would be better off buying the Allsop Ultra Pro Lens Cleaner (Allsop Item 23321), which lacks the video tests but works in a wider range of devices.
