Canon's S30 and S40 cameras fill a gap in the company's digital lineup. Nestled between the ultra-tiny Elph models and the feature-packed PowerShot G and Pro models, the S30 and S40 combine most of the portability of the former with nearly every advanced feature of the latter.

With the exception of their CCD sensors (the S30 is a 3-megapixel model, while the S40 is 4-megapixel), the cameras are essentially identical. Each features a brushed aluminum body with a sliding clamshell lens cover, a 3x optical zoom Canon lens, and a 1.8-inch LCD on the back of the camera for previewing and reviewing shots.

For beginners, the cameras are point-and-shoot simple. Just twist the dial to Auto and start snapping pictures. For more experienced photographers, both models include aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes, plus manual focus, exposure compensation, slow-sync flash, spot metering, and adjustable ISO (from 50 to 400 on the S40, and 50 to 800 on the S30).

Movie mode lets you capture video clips with sound. At 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 pixels, the movies aren't camcorder quality, but they're fun and convenient, and they're perfect as e-mail attachments. The cameras also include an unusual voice-memo feature, which lets you record up to 60 seconds of audio with each image.

To provide maximum battery life in the smallest possible space, the cameras use a proprietary lithium-ion battery (both the battery and a charger are included). The battery charges quickly and holds a reasonably long charge, but if you're planning to use the camera for extended outings, a spare battery is a good idea. A larger-capacity memory card is also advisable if you want to shoot more than a dozen photos at a time or really take advantage of the movie mode. The cameras use Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards, including the Microdrive. To print your photos at home, the S30 and S40 connect directly to Canon's CP-10 and S820D printers for easy printing--you don't even need a computer.

If you're looking for a camera with the sleek, compact style of a point-and-shoot with the extensive manual controls of an advanced amateur camera, the S30 and S40 are both great choices.

BE VERY CAREFULL OF THE SLIDING COVER!.......2006-07-29

I actually own the SD30 which is the 3.2MP which is our very first DC. I got it for the birth of my daughter and has captured all her milestones but sadly after 3 1/2 years the sliding cover for the lens gave out and the lens is stuck and so the camera would not operate anymore. The cost of having it repaired in a Canon service center in IL is as much as buying a new one so I am just looking to buying a newer model (still a Canon of course) Canon has proven a name in the world of photography by the quality of pictures you to take with their camera.

I've had the camera for a few months now and it's my first. I knew almost nothing about how to use a camera like this, and it does have A LOT of customization options. I did use the manual for the first day or so, but playing with it gave me the most knowledge.

Anyway, on to my review.

Pros:
-Beautiful picture quality. Compression isn't spectacular at the highest resolution, but much detail is still represented in the photos.
-Solid, sturdy design that is very pleasing to the eye.
-More options than you'd ever think you'd use, but they are all fantastic. The numerous ways of manually adjusting the picture are probably my favorite thing about the camera.
-Fast battery charging.
-Easy access to memory card and battery.
-Fast LCD response.

Cons (if you notice):
-Sliding lens cover hasn't broken, but it seems delicate.
-Mushy "Set" button mainly used to delete photos (in my experience). You'll get used to it.
-A little heavy.
-Shutter response isn't fast.
-Flash is a little too bright at standard settings, but is a cinch to adjust in most shooting modes.
-Movie mode could be better, but that's not what you're buying this for.

Recommendations:
-Extra memory, of course. The provided 16 MB card will only hold about 10 pictures in fullsize at full compression.
-An extra battery (or two, why not?). Go on eBay and find a knockoff battery. Search "NB-2L"
-A case. Buy one that's protective, and not too tight, because putting the camera in the case could inadvertently open the lens cover.

Overall: I highly recommend this camera, even if you don't know much about photography. If you care about how your pictures turn out, you will enjoy using this camera.

Perfect handheld for the amatuer photographer!.......2004-01-03

This is a great camera for anyone looking for advanced features at a compact size. Unlike Canon's "lower-end" models, the S40/45/50 series pack in all the adjustable/tweakable features seen in most "SLR" cameras at a lower cost. This camera is not as compact as some of Canon's and some of the other manufacturer's units. But the additional features offered by these cameras outweight the size/weight penalty.

My only complaint with these cameras are their less than desirable lenses. The S40 has a 3x optical zoom (11x digital) and doesn't have the lens power of some of the other Olympus cameras. Then again, if you're looking for that type of lens capability, you're not looking at these cameras and are more apt to looking at the higher-end SLR versions.

Overall, these cameras have the Canon photo quality and the construction quality. A great buy!

If you want to get into digital photography.......2003-12-31

...this is a good camera to start with. Especially if you use a Mac because it works great with iPhoto. If youre a beginner like me, you may be overwhelmed by the amount of features the S40 offers, but dont worry. Just put it on automatic and you will be able to take great pictures. It just takes a little practice to get used to the delayed response shutter button.

Some of the things I like about it:
1. It takes very nice pictures. Your pictures will look as good as anyones.
2. It has a movie mode that I didnt know existed until recently. Saves the movie (with sound) in AVI format (QuickTime player will play it)
3. Attractive small body (and who doesnt like attractive small bodies?)
4. The LCD display is great for reviewing your pictures
5. It takes gigantic pictures. At 100% they are about 20" tall by 30" wide. You probably wont ever print out anything this large, but this just means you have a lot of detail and resolution wont be a problem.

What I dont like as much:
1. Too many manual settings keeps me from experimenting too much. You would have to read the manual if you want to do any shooting besides automatic. And who wants to read a manual?
2. You have to get pretty close to your subject. Taking group pictures from much further than 10'-15' will not turn out very good. If you can get up close you will have great pictures. Dont try to use this camera at a football game from the stands. I just dont think it has enough zoom power.

Ive enjoyed using mine for the last year and a half. Like the reviewers before me, I recommend doing the following:
1. Get an extra battery cause you never know when the battery will run out of juice. It will cost $25-$50 depending on what brand you get.
2. Im not sure what size compact flash card comes with the camera, but its probably in the 16MB range which is pretty much useless. Being a 4.0 Megapixel camera, and shooting such a large picture, it eats up memory. Get a couple of 128MB's or even larger if you can and you will have room to take 100 or so pictures.
3. I dont think it comes with Photoshop Elements, but if you can afford it, get it. If you do cropping and getting photos web-ready you will want to have this or the full Photoshop package (you better be very good if you want Santa to bring this)

You will like this camera and all your friends will tell you that you take great pictures.

What does it do?.......2007-01-12

Loaded fine. Tried to use it, but it never worked. Canon help desk, didn't help. I thought it was to allow reading bar codes printed on documents being scanned and then use the data to create a file name. It didn't work and Canon kept saying I should have some third party software. Then what do I need this software for?

For the money I paid for it I am not too happy. I could have gotten something else and better. It's not slim, at least by 2001 standards. It eats batteries like crazy, not to mention the fac that the batteries compartment is inside the cover. Anti-shock is sometimes completely useless. What I like about it is ease of use, except for battery replacement, and several different functions. I would say shop around.

im telling u ppl, dont buy this system. the anti-skip sucks. it wont even play a cd. i have to go out and buy more batteries and still, nothin. and when it does work, it shuts off in the middle of the song and then...nothing. well, at least hank god for am/fm.

I love this CD player...except the headphones are jumpy at times...staticy like. Depends if you hit them or something...the radio reception is great, clear sounding. The CD player is awesome! It has a great sound. In my opinion, this is a great product!

Low price, low quality.......2001-01-06

Radio reception is poor at best (and I live in the NY Metro area). Have had problems with CD playback when it comes to playing the middle to end tracks (could just be my unit). Why do most walkman or cd players continue to come with these awfull headphones? Can't they give us consumers a break. Most people will go out and spend anywhere from $20 to $50 on new headphones to replace the garbage ones that come with the units.

A great product. The AM/FM tuner is a huge bonus. Great price. However the included headphones are just plain awful. Other than that, a great product. In the past, I have had some concern over Durability of Audiovox products, but this seems to past that test.

My Samsung HD tale.......2006-08-23

I remember when I first saw this TV on a Sears showroom floor. At the time the Sears people were using a Satellite TV feed with a digital tuner using the Discovery HD channel. In the dark room they were using the picture looked like nothing I had ever seen before. I went to Best Buy where the TV was a $100.00 dollars cheaper and decided to buy. Overall I would give this TV an average grade. It's HD picture did not look as good in my house as it did in the Sears showroom. I have Comcast digital cable so I am using their HD cable tuner. ESPN HD is best picture by far in HDTV. I'm a little disappointed in this TV's High Definition output. The TV's HD visual output varies too widely from channel to channel. On the DVD side I used a Marantz DV-8400 DVD player which a year ago was one of the tops in it's class. I could not tell the difference between 480I and 480P visually using this TV and using progressive scan on the DVD player. It looked the same to me. To top it all off the red convergence unit went out after 3 years. When I bought my TV from Best Buy I got the extended warranty because I was concerned about this technology at the time. It turned out to be a good move since the TV was still covered by the warranty when it broke so Best Buy repaired it at no charge. Finally this TV does not display any picture using 780P which is the HDTV standard. This is troubling to me because I own a XBox 360 which displays their HD games at 720P resolution and this TV can't show the games or anything else in that resolution at all. After my experience with this TV and hearing about other owners of Samsung Televisions have similiar experiences my advice would be to stay away from Samsung Televisions regardless of type. There are better deals out there.

I have owned this set since June 11, 2002. It first broke on January 4, 2003 and was not repaired until February 10. Samsung admitted they had 'parts availability problems.' Then, on July 6, 2003, it failed again and as of August 6, 2003, remains dark with again, 'parts availability problems.' Samsung can not promise me ANY date it will be working, can promise no date for delivery of parts and generally does not follow-up or return telephone calls. I have hired a lawyer since after $1800 - they have very poor customer and warranty service - spend the $200 and buy a Mitsubishi.

Let me point out first that I'm a former Sears employee who had to sell these things on a daily basis. And I say former so that no one thinks we're out for higher commission, because Samsung paid about the best.
The fact is, though they look great when working, these TV's just don't last. We actually had a Samsung rep/repairman tell us one time that they are notorious for blowing out almost exactly at the three year point.
Second, while the picture is bright and clear, Samsung uses no form of screen refresher. While this isn't a huge problem if you're watching widescreen DVD's or a high definition signal in 16:9 mode, prolonged viewing in 4:3 mode burns bars into the sides of the TV. Expecially since instead of black bars, Samsung uses gray bars.
In the end, you get what you pay for. There's a reason you pay more for TV's like Hitatchi, Sony, Mitsubishi, etc. If you must buy this TV though, do yourself a favor and get the extended warranty if it's offered. It will be worth whatever you spend on it.

I have had this TV for 3.5 months and the picture is incredible. When the TV works you can't get a better performance for the price. My TV blew an internal power regulator and was out of comssion for a month shortly after I bought it. I must say that the samsung support technician I called for help was very nice and went the extra mile to make sure my TV was fixed.

I was looking for a bigger TV with great picture without the big price tag. Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi are ok but not that affordable. By comparing the features with those with similar sizes, this 47" Samsung stands out. I own a 27" Samsung and I never had a problem with it so I'm confident about the quality of the brand. After the break in period, I was amazed with the quality of the picture even while watching cable. I purchased a progressive scan DVD and the picture was even better. I can't wait to try out the HD capability. My only problem is not with the unit but with the remote's design. The joystick like up/down/left/right/enter button makes me nuts. So if you have a universal remote, you can just throw this damn thing away and enjoy a stress free TV viewing.
