Binoculars come in a wide range of shapes and sizes these days, and an even wider range of prices. It's easy to spend less than $100 or more than $500 for what may appear to be, at least outwardly, comparable models. While they may look the same, they are probably quite different on the inside.

Recently, the binocular market has seen a flood of giant binoculars at prices that were unheard of just a few years ago. In general, giant binoculars are defined as those that magnify the view 10 times or more and have 70-mm or larger front (objective) lenses. It used to be that the least expensive giant binoculars cost in excess of $150, even $200. All that changed not long ago, when the bottom fell out of the price cellar. Now, several companies import giant binoculars that sell for half that, or less.

Celestron's 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars are one of the leaders in the low-price giant binocular arena. They certainly sound good on paper. The SkyMasters include multicoated optics and BaK-4 internal prisms, two features that promise brighter, better images, and key points to look for when judging a pair of binoculars. They also come with an adapter for attaching them to a photo tripod, which is a must to use them to their fullest, and a soft carrying case. But just because they are cheap doesn't always mean they are worth the price. Would it be better to save up for a more expensive pair?

To find the answer, I had an opportunity recently to judge the SkyMasters against a pair of Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars , one of the finest pairs of giant binoculars sold today. Like the SkyMasters, the Fujinons feature BaK-4 prisms, but also have fully multicoated optics. As a general rule, superior coatings mean superior image sharpness and contrast. But then, that should be expected, given that the Fujinons cost many times more than the Celestrons.

While the Fujinons were clearly the better performer, the Celestron SkyMasters held up admirably. Image brightness, quality, and contrast were all remarkable considering their bargain price. Although images were a little soft across the outer 25% of the Celestron's field, the overall view was impressive nonetheless.

Some inexpensive binoculars have very sloppy focusing, causing the eyepieces to tilt and shift. Not so with the SkyMasters. I found that their center-focusing mechanism worked smoothly, with no apparently backlash or wobble. Eye relief (the distance you hold your eyes away from the eyepieces to see the full field) is stated to be 18 mm, a good distance for higher power binoculars and an important consideration if you must wear glasses when viewing. The SkyMasters are also light enough to support by hand for short periods of time, although buyers would be well advised to mount them on a sturdy photo tripod.

The bottom line is, if you are considering a pair of giant binoculars, whether for bird watching, stargazing, or another recreational use, and have a limited budget, Celestron's giant 15x70 SkyMasters represent an excellent value. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch

Nice views, but, the two views are out of alignment... So pretty worthless for me. Nice if you close an eye, but, they are binoculars. So, no good for me I'm afraid.

I had to return this product because it was out of collimation. I'm sure the product in itself is good, but if you can go to the store to check that the pair you're buying is good, then do so. BTW, Amazon was great in taking the return at no cost for me and refunding the money, but why go through the process if you can get very similar prices at your local store.

These are great for stellar/lunar viewing, especially for kid usage, however, a solid, sturdy tripod is a MUST. Also, the eyepiece covers don't stay on too well when stored. All-in-all, a great buy!

I went through two pairs both of which arrived out of collimation. The images couldn't merge. Finally I got a cash refund and bought a pair for $40 more at Garret optical. They are super.

The cover fits well with the exception of the front corner near the DVD drive (at least on my laptop). Before ejecting a DVD, I have to ensure that the cover is completely snapped on. Otherwise, I can't eject the CD/DVD. Minor issue considering the extra protection provided by the case cover. And it looks great.

i'm amazed with how snug it is, but with the unpolished edges, i was extremely disappointed. i think it's going to snag or scratch something. not all of the socket holes align perfectly. it does give me a little more security in not getting my computer scratched. in the end, it's not worth the forty dollars i paid. it's more like a 20-25 dollar purchase.

The day that I recieved my red Mac cover, I dropped the darn thing - and wouldn't you know it, if I hadn't had the case on it my Mac would have been totalled.

This case is very easy to use and really works, it keeps the dings out and makes a pretty little place to put your stickers or stencils without harming the integrity of the Mac.

The top portion fits perfectly but the bottom one doesn't. I got a second one to check and it does the same thing. This leads me to believe that it's my MBP that's slightly off. Other than that, it's perfect.

The company I got this from advertized red, without consulting they sent gray. They could be color blind, or just didn't care. It did work properly, but wasn't red. If you need a red one, go to where you can see it first.

I bought this Bluetooth, since my phone has a funky adapter for headsets, and it limits my choices. I have had nothing but troubles with this headset. First off, when I put it on my ear, it is not adjustable at all, therefore does not stay on the ear very easily (and definitely don't wear glasses with it). Second, when I use it the people on the other end told me they hear this high pitched noise that becomes annoying quite quickly. Third, the people on the other end also told me that I cut in and out constantly. These last two make for an impossible conversation. Definitely not worth the money.

Also, it did not come in original Motorola packaging even though it was "new", yet you were not told this on the page about the product.

The sleeve is just what you see. It protects the notebook from scratches, but is not thick enough to guard against damage from dropping. The opening could be larger. It is difficult to get the notebook in and out of the sleeve. But it serves its purpose.

Very nice Laptop Sleeve but not for my Gateway.......2007-04-11

I chose the Red 15" Sumo Laptop Sleeve which I found to be really nice and it was definitely what I expected in terms of quality. There is a nice padding/cushioning material on the inside and the velcro closure works fairly well. My only dislike, (which is more my fault than anything) is my misjudgement that this size sleeve would fit my Gateway Laptop that has a 17" monitor. I can fit it in but it's quite snug and it doesn't close the way it should. The measurements convinced me that it would fit but not quite how I would like it too. I say this because I had trouble finding a good sleeve for Gateway latops. All in all though, I think it's great craftmanship for the price.

FYI: Delivery of the item was great.

This is a well-made product, and great protection for a laptop! It was not as compact as i might have hoped, but i realize that the extra padding is meant to keep the computer from being damaged. The color is great, the bag itself is attractive and nice. Overall, a good buy as long as you don't mind a cover without a carryiing handle.

Excellent product.......2007-08-15

I was worried about this case until I got it and snapped it on. Very simple and does what the write-up says: protects the MacBook Pro's easily-scarred exterior and allow complete and simple access to all ports. The front latch of the MBP is slightly harder to engage, but that has always been a problem for Apple's metal laptops. I got a red case and I love it. Very flash.

Note that this model is for the early MBP's only. Speck also makes similar cases for current model MBPs and for MacBooks as well.

my red computer condom.......2007-02-13

This case is absolutely fabulous! I can't count the # of comments I've received, and nearly everyone asks where I got it! It makes a statement. I do describe it as my computer condom (I'm a physician who talks to my patients about preventing STDs)...and then I joke that my Mac is protected from viruses and go on to extoll the virtues of mac. the case fits perfectly. I was initially slightly worried that it would impede my ability to open the case widely enough....and after using it for awhile, I report that this is not at all noticeable to me. I LOVE THE CASE.

I received this case for my MacBook Pro as a Christmas gift and I really love it. I did not know such a thing existed and would not have sought something like this, I don't actually see the need for it ... but now that I have it, I do enjoy it so. It's like a thick expensive candy apple red car finish--who does not love that?

Good case but cheaply constructed.......2006-12-16

I saw that case on someone else's laptop, and thought it'd be the best thing to protect the computer from getting dirty, from scratches. It's actually the best product I have seen around to do that, but unfortunately even at such a high price as $40, it's been constructed cheaply. Here you are the 2 major problems I have found:
- The case is basically 2-3mm (millimeter) thick and cover almost all the outside of the laptop. It comes in 2 pieces one for the bottom and one for the top (the screen). The bottom comes comes around in the back where the hinge is, but stops to enable the opening of the computer. The screen opening depends on the gap b/w the screen and the bottom part of the computer. That speck case reduces the gap, meaning it reduces the opening of the screen. This is very incovenient when using your laptop while lounging with your laptop on your lap... one of the reasons why you might have a laptop, is to be able to use it everywhere you want. This is clearly a problem and worries me as over time this could potentially add too much pressure on the hinge. I hope a better design will come with this.

- The construction problem, comes also from the hinge area. The same part where the screen extreme bottom-left & bottom-right side hit the bottom part of the speck case. But this time it happens when opening the computer, the screen part of the case catches on the bottom part pushing it down to the point where it could break. This again poses a problem on the computer hinge itself, adding too much pressure on a very sensitive part of a very expensive computer.

I hope others won't have that problem, but I will be reporting this to speck. Hopefully they can improve the design for what in the first place is a very good idea.

I love this case. fits like a glove, protects from scratches and really adds a great look to my MacBook Pro. I'm the most anal user, but this case really does add beauty and protection to the already perfect MacBook Pro. Like the other reviewr said, this case is only for the Core Duo version, but I know they are making one that fits both. Hands down, the best laptop case I've ever used.
