3COM/3CR858-91 hard-wired router.......2007-04-15
I've had the router for two months. It's great! Both our Mini's went on line by just plugging everything in. The Windows 98 wouldn't go on line until we unchecked everything in the proxy window including "automatically assign IP" or something like that. Seems to be very user-friendly and I like the fact the it has SPI.

Customer Reviews:
Good hub, average value.......2003-05-13
I have successfully used this hub in conjection with a SpeedStream 5660 router to provide an ADSL connection to three computers. But keep in mind that the Netgear EN-104TP 10-Base T-Ethernet Hub 4-Port will get the job done for 26$.
Near-Effortless Network.......2000-08-30
Quick and easy setup. I use this hub with my Windows 2000 Server and it works just as it should. Simple installation and startup. You can easily do this yourself. And I haven't had any trouble with this hub. But I'm outgrowing it; perhaps the 8-port hub would have been better for me. Leave room for growth! I never thought I'd have more than 4 clients.

Customer Reviews:
Travel router that should stay at home.......2007-06-02
Bought this router thinking it would help me during my travels. The size and features are nice - it has 3 modes (router, ap and client) which is one more than others (client is extra - handy for machines that only have a hard wired ethernet and you want to go wireless). It does run hot, but seems to be ok. The web interface is a little confusing - you configure each mode seperately. But there is a button to copy settings from one to the other so it's made somewhat easier.
Now for the bad - the DHCP and/or DNS is seriously broken. When plugged in at home for tests to my Comcast cable modem, the WAN IP address would expire after 1 hr and then not automatically renew. I tried manually doing it via the web interface and same problem. Then I found while travelling that in some hotels the DNS capability to clients would disappear or die. No pattern to that. Even after downloading the latest firmware (2.0.28) the problem persists. And there don't seem to be any more firmware updates (since about 2005) so that tells you pretty much where this product is headed.
Overall, a major disappointment. Better off with the D-Link travel router which seems rock solid and is smaller to boot.
Ok; but you can do better.......2006-08-07
I bought this product because I heard a favorable review of it on the radio. The product is about the size of a pack of cards, and includes a short ethernet cable to connect it as needed, and a power pack. A carrying case is included to take things on the road. The directions were not very clear. If you aren't a techie (that's me), there were many gaps in the directions for installation. One example was when I had to label a network as "ad hoc" or "infrastructure." The process became so frustrating, that I looked at the installation manual of a competing product: the D-Link Pocket Router. I downloaded its installation manual and looked it over. All the geek terms that 3Com took for granted were shown and explained in the D-Link manual. I then set the 3Com settings using the D-Link provided information. It worked fine. But, of course, by then I was interested in the D-Link Pocket Router and ordered it. I am much happier with this product for several reasons: First, as noted there is a detailed manual with full color pictures explaining things every step of the way; second, it is much smaller than the 3Com product, about 1/2 its size; third, and very important, the D-Link pocket router can be powered with its own power source, or you can hook it up using an included usb cable to your computer. So you don't have to have the external power source to hook it up; 4th, with a $10 rebate, it was less than half the cost of the 3Com. Bottom line? I kept the D-Link and returned the 3Com. It performs very well, is lighter, cheaper, and more versatile.
Handy WiFi for Palm Life Drive.......2006-07-09
When I travel I use my Life Drive to stay connected. It has built in WiFi and when staying at hotels with WiFi this is great, but some still have only Ethernet connections in the room. That leaves me unable to connect my Life Drive. This device fixes that problem. It doesn't take up much room and is easy to set up.
Very nice access point and Excellent Technical Support.......2005-07-15
Regarding this fine piece of equipment its everything they saying it is, Excellent security , all the options you can think of, very easy to use, and they have AMAZINGLY good support, which is rare to find these days, I messed it up updating the firmware, I called them, very friendly staff, they asked me to send it back, 2 weeks later I got another one new in box updated with latest firmware, for me no more brands its always going to be 3Com

What more can you ask for? Take it out of the box, plug it in, plug in the PCs you want to network, set up your network protocols (TCP/IP, NetBUI, etc.) and your on your way. No drivers to fuss with (although it does come with a CD of tools which I have not yet explored) and it comes with a pretty decent manual. Don't forget to buy network cables.

I use this for a 4 computer LAN at home. Set up was simple, the software was not only good, but automatically updateable and both intranet and internet speeds are excellent. In short, I have no cpmplaints.

ASIN: B00006BA2N |
Product Description
3Com has a solution for small offices that have one phone line but need to connect more than one person to a LAN and to the Internet. OfficeConnect 56K LAN modem incorporates a high-speed modem, 4-port Ethernet hub, IP router and pass-through voice port into one device. It allows small offices to establish a LAN plus access the Internet with just one analog phone line. It works with any PC, Macintosh or UNIX workstation with an Ethernet interface that runs TCP/IP and is compatible with any frame base Web browser. This device is designed to be easy to install with its included cables and ISP Wizard, which automatically configures the ISP connection. OfficeConnect 56K LAN meets V.90 standards and is fully backward compatible with X2 technology. The Ethernet interface and LZS (Stac) data compression feature cut down transfer time and provide fast connections for the computers on the LAN. The multiuser connectivity interleaves traffic from each computer on the one 56K line. The point-to-point tunneling protocol means no extra static IP addresses are necessary and data is secure through a corporate intranet. Its diagnostics display operation, call, user port, and progress status.
Customer Reviews:
Works great for dial-in access also :).......2004-09-29
I use the 3C886a device for dial in access. It was initially intended to share a network connection via dial out, but with the latest flash code ipu720.exe it allows for dial in use. I connect the 3com device to a separate NIC interface on the Unix Server and setup a static IP on the interface that is relative to the LAN modem's IP. This provides a 56K PPP dial up connection which allows me to connect 'multi-session' to my Unix servers and use ftp to transfer files etc. I also don't have to fumble with getting a 56K modem to work in the many Unix variants I need to support(no drivers needed). I have found this solution to be a great benefit in supporting my Unix customers remotely. I am disappointed in 3Com for discontinuing this product and hope I will be able to find it on the 3rd party market like here.
LAN Modem enables up to 4 computers to share its modem.......2002-09-20
I have installed one of these and recommended that someone with less experience than me install one. I also installed a similar ISDN LAN modem. The installation is a breeze. And it works without a hitch.Any of the four computers trying to access the Internet causes the modem to dial in to the ISP. If the modem is already dialed in, the connection is instantaneous for a user accessing the Internet. One of the four computers has a program to manage the LAN and to test the ISP.
One has to set up the network in the usual fashion, which is quite easy, if a little laborious.
So you can share files among computers on the LAN as well as all computers on the LAN sharing a modem. One can hook a hub in as one computer to increase the number of computers on the LAN, but that would be stretching the modem.
Of course, if all four computers are on the Internet at the same time, the access will be slow for each one of them.

A true hub, for the network sniffers out there.......2007-04-12
For those of you (network analysts, doing packet capture) who require a true ethernet hub (not a switch, nor a "switching hub", nor anything else that hides traffic from any ports), this is the perfect product. I took a chance on it after two false starts: Netgear's low-end 10/100 4-port hub is so poor that it fails at around 80 Mb/s throughput (aggregate!), while LinkSys sells a "hub" that is, internally, a switch.
Finally, I found that Wireshark (previously Ethereal) maintains a short list of true hubs. This charmingly inexpensive 3Com 8-port hub was on that list. Now that I've used it, I can attest that this is a true hub. Works flawlessly, and is attractive and well-built as well. Enjoy.

ASIN: B00000K0HO |
Amazon.com Review
There's no need for separate answering machines or voice mail services just because you have two-line phone service. The TA-180 from Casio PhoneMate answers two lines simultaneously, stores important message in a special file, and functions as a two-line speakerphone. This unit also provides call screening, call hold (including extension pickup), and call-waiting/flash functions. Complete remote operation is possible from nearly any phone, and voice prompts and one-key commands speed up the process.
Setting up the TA-180 was quick and easy; we were able to set the day/time and record greetings and personal memos with little or no help from the user's manual. Multiple greeting modes let you record separate greetings for each of your two lines. Once you record your greetings, you can arrange to have either greeting answer either phone line. Frequent callers can skip greetings by pressing their touch-tone # symbol.
Indicator lights and bold numbers in the large display window indicate newly recorded messages. You can listen to messages for each line separately or combine the playback to include both lines. You can also program the TA-180 so that you listen to only new messages or to both new and saved messages. Voice prompts tally your message totals, reminding you which line you're using, and guide you through playback. The sound quality is good and the synthesized voice is quite lifelike.
Casio PhoneMate's advanced messaging lets you skip forward or back and repeat, erase, or save messages with the touch of one button. If you are interrupted, you can pause playback for up to five minutes. By touching the up/down arrow buttons on the console, you can set the variable speed playback function to play any message 50 percent faster or slower than the normal playback speed. Once you've listened to a message, you can easily transfer it to the message file for long-term storage.
We tested the TA-180's recording capacity by recording and storing a combination of greetings, messages, and memos that totaled approximately 28 minutes, which is the capacity that the manufacturer claims the TA-180 can handle.
The TA-180 provides lifetime back-up memory without a battery. In the event of a power outage, the unit automatically saves your recorded greetings and messages. Overall, we think the TA-180 is a sensible answering solution for a two-line home or business.
Pros:
- Manages messages and greetings for two phone lines simultaneously
- Functions as a speakerphone for two lines
- Constantly displays date and time
Customer Reviews:
Five minutes, and it was installed!.......2001-05-18
I just had to have a 2 line answering machine, and despite the one negative review, the Casio seemed like the best bet. It arrived, and it was up and running in 5 minutes. It offered more than I expected, and the sound quality is very good.
One person said it was hard to setup and program. It's easier than a VCR, it's easier than a home computer, it's easier than most microwaves. My phone setup is kinda ugly.... the manual covered the different installation options clearly - including my unusual phone setup, and following the instructions was a snap.
All in all, I think the guy who said it was awful either didn't read the manual, or got a lemon.
Very pleased.......2001-03-05
I am very pleased with the Casio TA-180 2-line answering machine. The quality of the outgoing announcements and the recorded messages are very good. Set up is very simple. Playback operation is one button, what a breeze. Saving, skipping, and replaying messages is intuitive using the buttons and button labels provided. I read the directions once and never looked at them again. And the price is what I expected to pay. Another positive is that the machine does not include a bunch of ancillary features, it's a straightforward, two line answering machine. I am very pleased with the Casio TA-180 answering machine.
What would I improve? The built-in "computer" voice that guides you through the setup and announces the number of messages is stilted and not natural sounding. All in all, no big deal.
Poor fidelity and poor programming.......2000-12-20
I bought this item because I wanted a 2-line digital answering machine. I was very disappointed in the audio fidelity, but even more so in the programming. For example, both by phone, and on the face of the unit, it is not easy to erase calls. Comparing the programming to other units I've used, or your local Bell answering service, the speed of use is lacking. I don't have a suggested alternative, but I am not ready to see this is a good product.
Even the boss figured it out........2000-10-06
Needed a new two line answering machine for the office that was easy to use because my boss has trouble finding his way out of the driveway. Anyway, this machine was easy to set up. Display is large so you don't have to put your glasses on to see how many messages you have. Voice quality of incoming messages is excellent. Deleting old calls was very fast. Great value for the price.
