Don't get hard drive.......2007-06-01

The hard drive i-pod I purchased for almost $400 died in 17 months. The drive as well as the battery. I was told to go with a Flash 'drive'. I was so disgusted with the Apple merchandizing mentality, I researched and now own an i-River Clix and I love it. Check it out before becoming chained to i-pod and i-music.

Still Going.......2007-05-24

I bought this IPOD three years ago in August of 2004. It's been with me from Hawaii to the mainland and even to Korea. I mostly use it in my car through my auxilary jack. Although now outdated, it's proved tough as nails. It's been accidentally dropped on solid asphalt from four feet and still works. I haven't had to replace the battery or anything. It's pretty banged up, but keep chugging along. It even outlived my wife's IPOD Mini!

Great to use, but not made to last.......2006-05-05

The iPod's pretty decent when it's working correctly. It play mp3s fine and by my ear the sound is as good as any other portable device. The included software, iTunes, however, leaves a lot to be desired. My major complaint is that you can't take your music off your iPod with iTunes. The remainder of the problems I have with it are largely that the program tries to do a bit too much automatically, which can be irritating.

The big weakness, and the reason not to buy it, is because the iPod itself is rather poorly designed. Despite being hard drive based, there is little protection for the hard drive in the event the iPod is dropped. The protection consists of a small, blue, rubber enclosure internal to the iPod. While this provides some protection, it does not afford nearly enough for a portable device that will, eventually, be dropped on accident. This typically results in physical damage to the hard drive from even a small drop, meaning you either have to replace the hard drive itself, now a $60, or buy a new iPod if you're not mechanically inclined. Another big weakness is the headphone jack and its connection to the iPod's motherboard. The connection between the headphone jack and the motherboard itself consists only of a small jack which is secured to the motherboard with only a few solder joints. The connector on the motherboard often will develop failures of these solder joints, leaving you with again a non-functional iPod unless you can manage to resolder the joints. The actual headphone jack itself also wears out quickly. Over time, the small metal pieces that are within the jack that provide the electrical connection to the headphones and also hold the mini-plug in the jack wear out and loosen. This only took a couple years for me, meaning the entire headphone jack had to be replaced, which is not a cheap repair since the jack itself is proprietary.

The biggest weakness, however, is the (as-designed) unreplaceable lithium ion battery. Like any battery, lifetime decays with continued use, and with a device intended for daily use that will see frequent charging, the battery only lasts a year or two before the length of time the battery will run the iPod diminishes significantly. This would have been no problem, had Apple designed the iPod to have a user-replacable battery. However, they did not. So, you can either run the risk of a do-it-yourself battery change, send it back to apple to have the battery replaced (a costly repair at $99), or deal with the significantly diminished time. Either way, it's an annoyance that could have been avoided had Apple designed the iPod intelligently, but, unfortunately they did not.

The case and screen are also extremely susceptible to scratching, which, while it may not affect function of the device, detract significantly from the iPod's appearance and harms resale value of the iPod should you ever decide you want to rid yourself of the poorly designed contraption. Again, the only solution here is to buy a third party sleeve to protect the screen and case - something that could have been avoided by proper design.

The iPod itself is nice, while it works. The bottom line is, other manufacturers provide hard drive based mp3 players that provide every feature that the iPod provides, but with a lot less of the problems from poor design. The iPod is little more than an expensive mp3 player designed in a manner you would expect a throw-away device to be designed. You'd be better off buying another product from a manufacturer that's designed to last, unlike the iPod.

Versatile Hard Drive.......2005-12-25

I've had a 3G for about 3 years. The battery life is poor, 4-5 hours (at this point), much worse in the cold weather (don't leave it in your car, or you should buy a car recharger).

But it is very versatile. I back up GB's of pictures on the Ipod using Windows "SyncToy" (free). I back up my Palm Desktop using another sync program. I still have GB's of memory for medical lectures and "Teaching Company" lectures.

One weakness of the design is that the touch wheels are very "touchy", a glancing movement of your finger can increase the volume or change the program you are listening to accidently.

The click wheel failed the other day. Forget about repairing one of these yourself. I wish Ipods just had a simple, analog on/off button and volume/tuning knob. They wouldn't be as stylish, but they would last longer. Without the click wheel, it is unusable and I sent it off for service.

worst ever.......2005-12-03

this is an absolutely wonderful device to listen to. the sound quality is great, the navigation is great, everythings good...when its plugged into a wall. this thing has the worst battery every. ive had it for 3 years and im on my 4th one. the battery lasts for 5 hours for 6 months. after that, maybe an hour. its terrible. dont buy this.

don't buy into all the negative reviews people leave and all the mac bashing that goes on. people who have problems with iPod and windows are probably just idiots. my iPod works flawlessly with windows. i'm a believer in the right tool for the right job. macs are great computers and xp is the greatest thing to happen in the windows families. whichever your preference, the iPod is sure to work and integrate just fine.

i recommend that you first choose your primary use for the iPod, other than a music library, before deciding which model to buy. i own the 40 gig one, but i also edit video and use it has a portable hard drive. for most people, they will never fill 10 or 15 gig or however low the iPod goes now. so before throwing your money towards features you'll never use, ask yourself what you'll use it for first.

research, research, research... it's free! you're doing it right now by reading this. research and find what other things iPod can do for you before deciding which one to buy.

if you love music and you like keeping it simple, the iPod could wind up being the greatest thing you ever purchased. it is easy to use... easy to understand... works as promised... looks great... sounds great... feels great.

I just recently got an ipod with my 2003 Beetle. I must agree with one of my fellow reviewers that it is a bit of a nightmare for windows users. I have to take my ipod to work with me just to put music on the thing. As far as playing music the ipod does an excellent job, everything that the ipod promises it performs. Not to mention how CUTE it is. An ipod is a great investment if you are a music lover.

Not Just a Music Player!!!!.......2004-02-05

This is my first iPod, even though i have been using mac's for about 4 years now! Now i am a proud owner of this product. I could not be happier. 1st things 1st, i am sure you can read all the other reviews and find out that this product is bar none the best out there. But most importantly this is a multiuse product. I now how a portable 15gb firewire harddrive! and this product is smart enough to know the diff b/w music and my other files. as a student i MUST be able to have my documents on hand at all times, and "my comp crashed" does not work now a days. Along my purchase of my pod i picked up a media card reader, so while i am on the go with my digital camera (d100 nikon) i do not have to worry about carrying so many cards for my camera! and i also picked up a voice recorder, this allows me to record audio, which really helps me with things like test reviews, and meetings. (also helps with soundtrack as well). I know that 15g is not much by todays standards, but you have the ability to add an remove these files with ease. as a side note, i honestly do not see how people could actually use a pod that is larger, i have a hard enough time keeping track of 1990 songs i have on it right not (almost 6days worth)

Don't Waste Your Money.......2004-02-04

For the cost it is horrible. If you want a good mp3 play that will hold 5000 mp3s then check out the Rio Karma. It is a much better mp3 company and is a lot more reliable with windows computers. If you own a Mac (i feel sorry for you) then it is a great mp3 player to own. Also I dont really see the point in owning a player that holds 5000 songs unless it is the Phat Noise/Kenwood Music Keg.

I Love my 15 GB iPod.......2004-01-17

I don't own a Mac, nor have I ever used one. So I was a tad leery about getting one (or rather, asking for one for christmas). Nonetheless I did, and I got one. I had read reviews about folks having difficulty using the iPod (iGod) with the Windows operating system, but I have yet to encounter any insurmountable obsticles. Its software (iTunes) loaded flawlessly on my Windows XP system. I had to run out to get a dock connector cable with a USB port to use with my PC, but it was worth it. When I sat down to begin loading my CDs onto my new toy, I expected to experience the troubles others had encountered. But, there were none!!! Before I knew it, I had 300 songs on my iGod. I'm now up to 1284, and I've only used 4.36 GBs of my 15 GB. Now, my partner and I don't have to argue about which and how many CDs we can fit in our luggage to take with us on our next trip (which is today.) I also purchaced the iTrip to play my iGod in my car, on my favorite Irish Pub's radio, where ever. I absolutely love it!!

Purchased for my Tablet PC. Worked great for about two weeks, then suddenly had problems accessing any discs. Went through the hassle of getting an RMA from Buslink, within a week they had a replacement. This one worked fine for about two months, then it started doing the exact same thing the first one did. Dumped it for a Sony model that's been trouble free so far.

It works great on my desktop!.......2004-03-27

I have had mine for over a week now and so far, I can say that this is definately a quality burner if you have a usb 2.0 port. Unfortunately, most laptops including my own only have a usb 1.1 port so it works so incredibly slow that it is not worth using. So, it looks like I have to purchase a usb 2.0 cardbus adapter for my laptop. Oh well... I then hooked it up to my desktop which does have a usb 2.0 port and it works flawlessly. Setup was easy and I had no problems.(...) This is definately a great investment b/c it burns dvd+r's at a lightening 8x which will be very nice when they come out with discs that can be burned that fast. In summary, a great product that is easy to install and even easier to use.
