Customer Reviews:
Travelsound Zen - nice product.......2007-07-03
This works pretty well, except there should be somewhere to attach the remote. It is so small (akin to a credit card) and could be easily lost. Some type of handle would be nice, also. I wish the volume would stay at the same level, instead of having to turn it up each time it is turned on. Like the joystick, but it takes getting used to. Overall a nice product and beats using earphones each time you listen.
Incredible Sound from Compact, Easily Portable Unit.......2007-06-09
I've tried portable speakers before & have been very disappointed. This unit, created for the Creative Zen V & V Plus, had great reviews & said it would work with other MP3 players. I have a Creative Zen Xtra, so I decided to try it. My unit does not fit into the opening, which is designed specifically for the Zen V & V Plus, but worked perfectly through the use of the supplied line in cord. The sound was outstanding - absolutely incredible for a unit this size. I liked it so much & it was just what I wanted so I bought a Zen V Plus for those times when I don't need all my music.
Great sound from a small system.......2007-04-25
No matter how convenient it is to have a portable music player, there are times when you want to be able to listen to music "normally." The Travelsound Zen V is the way to do so with the Creative Zen V and Zen V Plus players.
It's very small, attractive, easy to hook up, and simple to operate. (You may have to update the firmware on your player, but the download is free on Creative's website, and the process takes just a few minutes.) There are lots of nice features. It runs on either 4 AA batteries or an included AC adapter. There's a USB input, an auxiliary line-in input, and a subwoofer output on the back. The manual is pretty minimal, but it covers the basic operation. The remote control is surprisingly convenient, but it is very small, and there's no on-board storage pocket or clip for it.
Of course, the most important aspect of any speaker system is the sound quality. The Travelsound Sen V is outstanding! It's amazing to hear the crisp sound from such a tiny system fill up a room. Obviously, you don't get booming bass from such small speakers, but the bass is very good nonetheless. The "wide stereo effect" button really works on this system; it creates an amazingly good stereo separation effect even though the speakers are actually less than six inches apart.
The Travelsound Zen V isn't cheap, but I think the convenience and quality are worth the price. I'm happy I bought it, and I'd do so again.
Great small system.......2007-03-19
I ordered this for my niece and she loves it. For how small it is, it produces great sound and charges her Zen, which is great.
Nice Docking Station.......2007-02-27
Sound quality is great with the Wide Stereo Effect. Volume has a nice range and there is low to no distortion at higher volumes. My only complaint would be that the volume control does not remember last setting, must reset volume each time i turn on. Having a remote control is nice, only i would like a pocket or some way to store remote in the station. Remote has a mute button, on top of standard controls, very nice, unfortunately same lack of on/off button as on other brands. On Docking Station itself controls are clean and straight forward. Overall i would give it a high rating. I bought it at the beginning of January.

Creative Labs TravelSound Notebook 500 Speaker System.......2007-05-24
It's good enough to have it with laptop. The only one drawback of it is to have powerful bass you need to buy a subwoofer as extra item. In gneral I'm sutisfied with it.
Not much better than your laptop's internal speakers.......2007-04-18
I purchased this item on sale for $54 and I STILL RETURNED IT. I read the reviews carefully before purchasing, however, I was very disappointed with the sound quality. I used the speakers to listen to acoustic guitar recordings on my laptop -- primarily treble-rich music. When I listened to the guitar music with the speakers attached, the sound quality was almost identical to that from the laptop internal speakers alone (i.e., there was no difference). I tried the speakers on two different laptops -- An apple Macbook purchased in 2006 and a Dell Inspiron purchased in 2004. Both of these laptops come with internal speakers that rival the sound of the TravelSound 500 speakers. I imagine that for other types of music (e.g., rock or pop) that have a wider spectrum of tone, the speakers would make more of a difference, however, I would not recommend these speakers unless you have an older laptop with really bad internal speakers.
Creative has lost me forever............2007-04-03
I used to LOVE Creative products years ago, but the products that they release just don't work all too well. I bought the Travelsound 500 laptop speakers...they sounded just like what I was looking for. Problem is that after a day or so they just stopped working. The speakers just slowly died. Great sound at first, then I noticed thatthe sound kept getting lower and lower. I tried them one 2 laptops, and 2 desktops---same thing. I tried online help, Creative's help---all for nothing. I've had problems now with the 5.1 speakers which honestly were probably the best of the worst--lasted about 2 years--I don't play my music that loud to blow my speakers either), two Muvos, and now this. I said before I'd never buy from Creative again, but I guess I was a little too forgiving. No more...if I could give these speakers a zero rating I would....DO NOT BUY!!! Do not buy Creative.....
Excellent speakers.......2007-01-21
This product has performed extremely well for its design purpose. The sound is excellent and rich, however, it is not meant to me as a main source of audio in a room full of people, etc. I highly recommend this product.
Close but no cigar.......2006-12-26
I had this on my wish list and received it for Xmas. I wanted it because the speakers on my Thinkpad are really insufficient, and it seemed like this was exactly what I needed. I'm slightly disappointed however.
1) It took me a little while to figure out how to get it to work, and the instructions were of little help. I can dismiss that as me just being a little slow, but still, a some text in the instructions would've helped.
2) Because my Thinkpad's lid is not flat, the way that the speakers snap onto the top of it is not very secure. It comes off very easily.
3) The sound seems to crackle quite a bit (although not constantly). I'm listening to the radio through the internet, and the sound quality seems inconsistent.
So, in theory, this is exactly what I wanted, but I don't know if these issues will just annoy me every time I pick up my laptop.

Small yet Powerful.......2007-07-01
I bought this speaker for the days I'm home and cleaning or whatever without using my headphones (especially when the 'Rents will be calling me for some task or other.) I was a bit weary at first because of the disappointed reviews with distortion of the sound but bought it anyhow because i like the company!
Well i wasn't disappointed with the speakers and if i don't try to put the volume up too loud on my Mp3 or on the speakers its loud enough to hear without distortion another reviewer said it best i think "people want a tall drink in a short glass" or something of that nature. So honestly for its size don't expect boom box/ surround sound quality and you'll be just fine!
Louder than I could wish, and it sounds much fuller than it looks.......2007-03-11
I bought this at Wal-Mart for [...] after reading about many different portable speakers. I hadn't encountered this model in my search, however. With every intention of taking advantage of the return policy, I brought it home and tested it immediately. It sounded quite good. I turned it up; it still sounded good. I turned it up such that it hurt my ears and there was no distortion. It even maintained its modest, but audible bass. I began to compare it to my 2.1 THX approved computer speakers at similar volume. Naturally, its bass didn't compete with a sub-woofer, but the important thing is that you can HEAR the bass. Instruments and vocals at the low end of the spectrum are not lost at any volume. I was so pleased with the clarity and breadth of sound that I forgot that it was powered by batteries. I was shocked, actually, that it was putting out such volume on four AAA batteries.
Now, to be a bit less sensational, I'm very pleased with these speakers and I'm confident that they'll provide more than adequate enjoyment, even as I consider myself an audiophile. It's a perfect solution for those parts of the house where I want my music without headphones: the kitchen while I'm cooking, the garage. The speakers are quite light. Not tiny in comparison with my iPod Shuffle, but miniscule in contrast with the sound they produce. I also appreciate that the provided line-in cable is very minimal without any bulk around the plug, like most cheap 3.5mm plugs have. It comes with a felt pouch which I will definitely use, as the speakers are not protected by any kind of mesh or screen.
Finally, I discovered a switch on the back when I was putting in the batteries. It activates the "Wide Sound" feature which makes the speakers sound further apart. I'll have to spend more time with this feature to judge for certain, but so far it's effective and subtle.
Good design and good quality!.......2007-01-12
Easy to bring it everywhere and the sound quality is very good.
Great Deal for $40!! Great Set of External Speakers!.......2007-01-11
This was another fun little add-on that I got so I could listen to my MP3 player. Really, I wasn't expecting much, since they are after all external speakers, but I was pleasantly surprised... This is a great little unit... Certainly the best I've ever owned in the "external speaker" market. :)
It's really plug-and-play... Add the batteries, connect your MP3 player, and you're done. I've gotten about 20 hours out of the batteries that were included with the unit, which isn't to shabby. No, there's no AC adapter which would have been nice, but I don't miss having it, since I'd usually be running it off the battery anyway. It's great to just pick it up and move it without having to disconnect anything when I want to move to another part of the house. And having it run off the batteries is WAAAAAY better than having it run off of the MP3 player's juice.
The sound quality is fantastic, in my opinion. Definitely impressive considering the size of the speakers. Sure, it distorts when you turn it up too loud, no, it doesn't sound as great as a stereo, but this isn't a stereo and some distortion isn't uncommon for external speakers such as this. The fact that there's no distortion when it's played quietly, or even at a moderately loud level, is a miracle in and of itself when it comes to speakers like this, a lot of which sound like distorted garbage at any level, much less a loud one. The sound quality is fantastic, not flat or echoed, and really quite impressive.
On my player, playing a song heavy in bass, I had the speakers turned all the way up (they have a volume control independent of your player, which is helpful for fine-tuning the quality of the sound being put out) and my volume control set to 13 (out of 20) with no distortion, some distortion at 14, and moderate distortion at 16-17. When I turned my player's volume to 20 (very distorted), but turned down the speakers to a point where I could hear no distortion, it was still louder than when I had the speakers turned all the way up with my player's volume at 13. When I played acoustic music, I could have both the speakers and my player as loud as they could handle with almost no distortion.
The volume on that is quite loud, loud enough to need to speak louder than normal voice to get heard in a room where it's playing. If you need to go louder than that, well, that's not what these are made for, and you're better off buying a cable to connect your MP3 player to your stereo.
Overall, this is a great unit and a great value, and I highly recommend them. I wouldn't pay $90 for it (since that's apparently the list price), but since you can find it everywhere from here to Wal*Mart to Best Buy for $29-$40, you shouldn't have to.
$40 Well Spent.......2006-09-11
Wow...reading the other reviews gave me pause.
If you expect miraculous sound from a speaker that costs $40, look someplace else and let me know because come on.
For $40 this small speaker is handy and sounds fine to me. If you turn it on full blast, yes, it's distorted, but it's quite good at moderate levels. It actually sounds better as it breaks in. I doubt audiophiles would bother with it, but it delivers a lot for its cheap price.

Customer Reviews:
Almost perfect. Definitely worth a look.......2007-06-07
The good:
Speakers are awesome for their size. Decent bass and the stereo enhancement is a nice touch that widens the soundstage somewhat (needed for any speaker where the left and right channels are so close together)
Battery life is excellent. I have been running for hours on the first set, so I have no idea how long they really last but so far, so good.
The power adapter includes both US and European plugs, and is compatible with worldwide voltage.
Has a "Line-In" port so you can use a portable DVD player, laptop, etc. These speakers sound better than almost every laptop and portable DVD player I've ever used, so this is an ideal second use for them. Also has a "Subwoofer Out" port (i doubt anyone will ever use this), and an AV Out port so you can plug your iPod Video into a TV with the included cables.
The power switch is in fact a switch and is flush with the top of the unit so it's very hard to accidentally turn the speakers on while they're bouncing around your luggage. You will also find volume, mute, and sound enhancement buttons on the top of the TravelSound. It will stand upright on a desk thanks to a retractable support.
The remote is a nice touch, and gives you volume, mute, play/pause, prev/next track and full navigational control over the iPod (using up/down buttons in place of the click wheel).
The Bad:
Cloth speaker grilles were a very poor choice for a travel speaker. I see these getting torn or otherwise damaged very quickly. Metal mesh would have been more appropriate for better durability, given the product's intended use. The cloth provides absolutely no protection against something in your bag stabbing the speaker drivers. Stupid move, Creative. If you're worried about damage, I'd strongly suggest placing a piece of cardboard in front of the speakers while they're in the travel bag.
While the unit uses the standard iPod dock connector, the USB pass-through connector on the back is standard mini-USB. Would have been nice of them to use a female iPod dock connector instead (like the Apple docking stations) so I don't have to carry around yet another cable.
There's nowhere to store the credit-card remote. A clip, slot, or SOMETHING on the TravelSound itself to stash the remote would have been nice. I recommend using some adhesive Velcro to attach the remote to the back of the TravelSound so you don't lose it.
The prongs on the power adapter are removable so you can attach the European plug, but they are not retractable and take up a lot of space. The power adapter itself is somewhat large given its purpose.
Summary:
The TravelSound i is a great set of portable iPod speakers, but they are mostly suited to light travel use due to the fragile cloth speaker covers. They would be perfectly at home in an office or for occasional use at the beach, picnic, boat, etc. I would not recommend these for heavy outdoor use at all.
Small package, big sound!.......2007-05-22
I'm not really a techy person but I just wanted to share my opinion on this awesome little product from Cambridge SoundWorks. The TravelSound i is everything you'd expect from a portable travel speaker for your iPod: it's small, light and the sound is plenty big enough to fill a hotel room. It's extremely easy to use. I didn't even have to consult the manual (and coming from me, that's saying a lot!) The battery life is incredible and I love that it charges my iPod while it's running on AC power. Overall, this is a very nice product. I highly recommend it to anyone considering a portable speaker for the iPod!

Amazing speakers and so portable!.......2007-04-25
I can't tell you how many people have complimented me on these speakers -- they are lightweight, portable, easy to use and produce amazing quality sound. Definite "bang for the buck"! I use them all the time and haven't had a problem (owned them for about 16 months now with use 3-4 times per week). I also live in a dusty and wild weather area (the rural interior of a developing country) and they've stood up to some crazy wear-and-tear. My only pet peeve? The volume automatically goes to zero on the speakers every time they are unplugged. So when you plug it in again you have to keep pressing the volume up button rather than it "remember" your setting. Even still, I give it 5 stars.
Good choice.......2007-04-08
I like these speakers because they are small and I can use them with my Zune at work. That's why I bought them and I am happy with the purchase. The batteries it came with seem to last ok - I've had them for 3 weeks and haven't died yet - I use them about 4-5 hours a day.
Great sound from small package.......2007-04-06
These speakers are just the ticket for listening to my Creative Zen Vision M mp3 player in situations unsuitable for wearing earphones (like when I am working out). They provide amazing depth of sound from such a diminutive package and half-way decent battery life, though I did finally break down and buy rechargeable batteries to use in these speakers. You'll know when the batteries are on their way out as the speakers turn themselves completely off; no fading of power. The speakers are well-supported on their base and will hold their tilt at any angle you choose. I couldn't be happier with the price or the product.

Good for the money.......2007-07-20
Just got my Travelsound Silver yesterday and have been using it. Other reviews are correct that you can't crank it without static and distortion...but hey...it's a little inexpensive speaker...what do you expect? I bought it on sale from Creative for $20. It was SO worth it! I checked out portable MP3 speakers at Radio Shack, and this out-performs their $40 model.
I figured out that things "sound better" if you use the MP3 player setting for Rock, Acoustic, etc. True, you don't get sweet sweet base, but my regular boom box doesn't either.
I found a nice balance between using the MP3 player volume and the speaker volume to get less distortion. If I crank up the Creative Zen Micro to volume setting 25, I get distortion even on low volumes on the speaker. Conversely, if I crank the speaker and keep the Zen volume low, there's static at the top end of the speaker volume. So...just keep your player at a mid-volume and the speaker at a mid-volume and it's fine.
For me, this is for travel in hotel rooms and my 3 month trip to Europe. I don't like wearing headphones all the time (can't hear phone ring or knock on door). This is perfect. I can also hook it up to my laptop for presentations that have volume or for movies. Headphones ALWAYS get a better sound, but I'm singing along anyway or doing chores...so this is a nice little speaker for that.
The carrying bag is barely padded. The bottom support folds under which is nice. I think for travel (in my carryon) I'll put some hard cardboard as a makeshift cover for the speaker elements in case it gets wacked in my bag.
Good for $20, I'd even pay $40 for it too.

Great Voice Quality for the Small Size.......2006-06-29
Great Voice Quality packed in a small bundle. Small Size makes it easy to carry while travelling. Would recommend to buy an universal power adaptor for home use.
I have used this product for one month now...thumbs up from me. But Guys keep your expectations real based on price and size....do not expect highest voice quality at higher volumes.
It's easy to share the songs on your mp3 player.......2006-02-23
One of the problems with an mp3 player is that it is difficult to share what you are listening to with others. You must take off your earphones to let someone else listen to the song you enjoyed so much. With the Creative TravelSound, this problem is solved. Just pop your mp3 player into the Creative TravelSound and now everyone can hear the music together. The sound is quite good and the batteries seem to last for a long time. You can also get an AC adapter if you use it a lot.
I also use my mp3 player to record lectures that I attend or give. I find it easier to listen to the lectures with the Creative TravelSound than using my earphones.
All in all, my Creative TravelSound is a great accessory to my mp3 player.
Surprise!.......2006-02-17
After reading the other reviews, I expected a serviceable product. I was not prepared for the relative richness of the sound emanating from such a compact product. Obviously, certain types of music, esp. w/heavy bass, will strain the system. If you purchase with reasonable expectations, you should be quite pleased. (I since have purchased 2 more as gifts.) Enjoy. (Incidentally, the one star should be FOUR.)
Not their best product........2006-01-01
Sould quality is ok at low volumes but speakers "rattle" as you turn up the volume. Bought them for both my notebook computer and cd player. Batteries go dead really fast when turned off. Very short speaker cable (3 ft). Not worth the price!
