Amazon.com Product Description

Stylishly and intelligently designed for mobile professionals, Apple's MacBook Pro gets a serious speed bump with the new, powerful Intel chipset (dubbed Santa Rosa), which provides a faster Core 2 Duo processor, longer battery life, and native support for 802.11n wireless connectivity. This model (MA895LL/A) also includes a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display measuring 15.4 inches and a state-of-the art NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card for more realistic graphics for animation and gaming. This MacBook Pro is powered by the new 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 processor and 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 memory--the fastest portable computer memory currently on the market (June 2007). But some things haven't changed: the trademark stunning aluminum enclosure that's is just one-inch thin, built-in iSight video camera, and Apple's magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter, which safely disconnects when under strain.

This MacBook Pro measures just 1 inch thin and weighs 5.4 pounds.
Other hardware features include a 120 GB hard drive, 8x SuperDrive for burning multiple disc formats, built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 port, an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking, and a DVI video output.

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
The Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor has a 2.2 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an enormous 4 MB of Smart Cache, an L2 cache that can be shared between the cores as needed. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro offers a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display with an antiglare finish that's perfect for color-minded professionals.
Display and Graphics
The 15.4-inch widescreen TFT (non-glossy) display offers a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and an antiglare widescreen display that's perfect for color-minded professionals. The new MacBook Pro display is backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), which gives it a lighter weight and more power efficiency than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ. It's also better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display.

Video and graphics are powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card, which is boosted by 128 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications. The GeForce 8600M GT brings a new level of realism to the MacBook Pro with its 16-lane PCI Express architecture, 16x full screen anti-aliasing, 128-bit High Dynamic Range rendering, and a texture fill rate of up to 8.2 billion per second.

Hard Drive and Memory
The 120 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough space to store business-related documents and presentations, as well as offers space for a large digital audio and video library. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of PC5300 DDR2 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1 GB) have an industry-leading 667 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity can be increased to a whopping 4 GB.

Wireless Connectivity
The built-in 802.11n wireless networking provides up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g, but it's also backward-compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, enabling you to communicate with the a wide variety of Wi-Fi resources. It works seamlessly with the new AirPort Extreme with 802.11n. Use the built-in Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to your PDA or cell phone, synchronize addresses, or download pictures from your cell phone. You can also use a wireless headset for iChat audio chats and VoIP calls as well as quickly share files with a colleague.

Video Conferencing with Built-in iSight
Artfully placed in the display bezel is an iSight camera, which enables easy video conferencing as well as allows you to snap pictures of yourself and create video podcasts. Using the iChat AV application, video conferencing is integrated into your iChat buddy list, so initiating a video conference is a breeze. iChat also lets you hold audio chats with up to 10 people and provides high-quality audio compression and full-duplex sound so conversation can flow naturally. For video podcasting, you can record a short clip using the iSight camera, then use iWeb to create a video blog entry or post your GarageBand-recorded podcast.

Apple Innovations

The magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the cord or the MacBook Pro, if you trip over the cord..
The MacBook Pro is the culmination of years of refining hardware and software design to an integrated art. One of Apple's most celebrated innovations is the MagSafe power adapter connector with offers a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So, if you happen to trip over a power cord, you won't send MacBook Pro flying off a table or desk--the cord simply disconnects, without damage to either the cord or the system. As an added nicety, this means less wear on the connectors.

Using two-fingered scrolling, you can easily scroll around your documents or open contextual menus with one hand.
The trackpad can tell if you've got one finger on the pedal, or two. With two, you can easily scroll around your documents or open contextual menus. When you need right-click functionality, simply open ÒKeyboard and MouseÓ in System Preferences and enable the secondary click preference.

The MacBook Pro has battery life that rivals most notebooks in its class. If you'd like to make that battery last even longer, Mac OS X has a few tricks up its sleeve. Go to System Preferences, click Energy Saver, and change battery optimization from Normal to Better Battery Life. Or tell MacBook Pro to reduce its screen brightness and give yourself a little more time untethered.

And with the included Apple Remote and Front Row software, you can show off your latest photos and access your iTunes music and playlists from across the room. You can also use it to watch downloaded movies and TV episodes as well as control playback of DVD movies. The Apple Remote features a minimalist six buttons--just press the Menu button to activate Front Row and begin to navigate through your media. You can even use the remote to control Keynote presentations in iWork '06.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Avoid this model.......2007-09-21

The MacBook Pro has many issues which is why I am rating it at 2 stars. There are much better laptops available. Be aware the price offered here at Amazon by third party dealers is not the cheapest available. Apple sells it for less than the current price shown. The strongest thing going for the system is it's operating system which gives a brief breath of fresh air from the coldness found in Windows. There is also a strong community of users who will help you out and a friendly customer service team.

The main issues are a screen which is horrific. Apple can no longer be known for graphics. The maximum resolution found on the screen is less than other models sold by their competitors. This is how this system was designed. Investigate.

The MacBook Pro screens have a defect affecting most of the production currently. The lower 1/3 of the screen will have a yellowish/golden hue. The very top of the monitor has a 1mm bright white line. The tones from top to bottom are inconsistent. The screens background helps to mask the problem but you will see it if you ever do any work with the system.
The viewing angle is very narrow. If your head leaves a 4 inch box the screen is almost unreadible and will be golden in color. This is due to the "LED" backlighting system. Investigate.

If you are still intent on an Macbook look at the 17 inch model. You will notice the 17" is the most commonly reviewed model because the other ones will be horribly received. It does not use the LED backlighting and the maximum resolution is higher.

The second main issue is something Mac users are referring to as "Kernel panic". It is the same thing as Microsoft's notorius "blue screen of death"except the cause is the hardware. Should your system have "kernel panic" you will have a locked up, unusable system. The work will have gone unsaved and you will be out of the notebook for 3 weeks as they repair the brand new system. Investigate this further.

Yes, stick a fork in it. This model is a turkey.

5 out of 5 stars cook'in.......2007-09-19

Just retired and bought the 15" 2.4 Macbook Pro w/the 30" Apple Cinema Display and now I'm done. Put a fork in me. Initially I purchased this for my photo work but for the last month I've been having a ball just playing a cruising the net. Expensive yes but now it's my time (anyway that was the close I used on my wife).
90% of the time I use he Macbook as a desktop and it just screams. Elegant, beautiful and looks great in my studio (I can call my den a studio after what I paid for this toy)

Now, if I can use that same close on my wife for a BMW motorcyle.......

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic laptop........2007-09-16

Now that I have really used this new laptop I can assure you that this is by far the best laptop I've ever owned. First I'm quite sure that I won't be going back to PC, second I "upgraded" from the MacBook and yes this Mac is hotter but I don't think this is a deal breaker. As for it's performance it's been flawless, I can only imagine how the 2.4GHz Macbook Pro would perform. If you're in a budget don't hessitate to buy this base model, you won't regret it. This is definitely a five star Laptop.

1 out of 5 stars Great Product BUT Delivery A Problem.......2007-09-16

Just a note to others - Amazon says it is "in stock" but they still haven't shipped the computer I ordered on Sept.12 for overnight delivery and all I get are apologies or excuses. So if you need this right away.....be warned that "in stock" really means very little.

4 out of 5 stars Best Computer I Have Ever Used.......2007-09-14

I have had this computer for about 3 months now, and I can confidently say that it is one of the bests notebooks I have ever used. I have used windows computers since 1998 and finally I decided to see if all the hype about Mac OS X was true. Mac OS X is a great system to work with. It is secure, stable and simple to use. For instance, when I am typing a paper or playing a game, I don't think about the computer, I just think about the game, paper or whatever else it is I am doing. With windows, I was constantly being interrupted with error messages or notifications that I would think more along the lines of, I'm typing a paper...on a computer. Also, I have had my mac on for about 8 days now without a restart and it is still running smoothly. With windows, I would have to restart sometimes multiple times in a day. If are like I was, and considering a switch to Mac OS X, but still need to run Windows XP or Vista, you can do so via bootcamp, vmware, or parallels. I personally use bootcamp for gaming and parallels for productivity tasks (Microsoft Publisher, etc.). Parallels can boot to your bootcamp partition, so you don't have to waste disk space with two windows installations. On average, my battery lasts for about 3 1/2 hours with display at about max, airport turned on, and running word, ichat, mail, and surfing internet with firefox. So far I only have two complaints about this machine. 1st is that my airport wireless signal drops every so often. To get it back I have to disable the airport card and then enable it a few seconds later. According to Apple, they are working on a fix for this issue. A side note, Apple customer service in my opinion is one of the best in the industry. I had a great experience with them when explaining my airport issue. The other thing I have noticed is the computer runs a little warmer than other notebooks I have used. In my opinion, it is not extremely hot (you won't burn yourself), but it is a little warmer than I would have expected, but at an inch thick, what did you expect? Again, overall a wonderful feature packed computer backed by a secure, stable operating system.

This model features a glossy 17-inch screen that provides a richer, more saturated feel for a more immersive viewing experience. It also offers a state-of-the art NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video card for more realistic graphics for animation and gaming. This MacBook Pro is powered by the new 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo T7700 processor and 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 memory--the fastest portable computer memory currently on the market (June 2007). But some things haven't changed: the trademark stunning aluminum enclosure that's is just one-inch thin, built-in iSight video camera, and Apple's magnetically connected MagSafe power adapter, which safely disconnects when under strain.

This MacBook Pro measures just 1 inch thin and weighs 6.8 pounds.
Other hardware features include a 160 GB hard drive, 8x SuperDrive for burning multiple disc formats, built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 port, an ExpressCard/34 expansion card slot for expansion solutions such as 3G wireless networking, and a DVI video output.

Get more screen real estate with the 17-inch screen, featuring a 1680-by-1050-pixel resolution.
Display and Graphics
The 17-inch widescreen TFT display offers a native resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels and an antiglare widescreen display that's perfect for color-minded professionals. This version of the 17-inch MacBook Pro has a display backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), which gives it a lighter weight and more power efficiency than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ. It's also better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display.

Video and graphics are powered by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card, which is boosted by 256 MB of GDDR3 SDRAM.

The 160 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough space to store business-related documents and presentations, as well as offers space for a large digital audio and video library.

4 out of 5 stars Power for the Powerbook.......2007-05-11

If you either need more power than one battery can provide, or you've found that the original battery for your powerbook isn't holding enough of a charge anymore, this is the officially branded replacement.

If you need to look up the details on your current battery before you decide, then click on the apple, select "about this mac" and then hit the "more info" button. Your battery's data is in the hardware section under power with the heading "Battery Information".

Apple Inc. provides a lot of information on the proper care of your batteries on their website. The basics are that if you're not planning to run your powerbook off of its battery for a while, you can store it (preferably at about 40% power) in a cold place to extend its lifespan. Additionally, about once every 30 times you use up the full charge of the battery and then recharge it (that's a total of 30 even if you do it in smaller increments, if you used up half of the battery each day it'd take 60 days, etc) you should keep it on battery power completely until it runs down to nothing and let it go to sleep due to lack of power before charging back up. This is just to give the battery an occasional chance to check on what its current maximum charge is, so that the time/percentage reported by OS X can remain accurate.

Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Apple? Don't be misled........2006-12-10

I needed a new battery for my Powerbook. I found a non-Apple one for 66 dls here on Amazon and this one: "APPLE M9572G/A Lithium Ion Battery for 12 inch PowerBook" with a big link to "other products by Apple". Well, it looks like a real Apple battery, so I got the real Apple battery even though it cost 50% more.

I was surprised to open my package when it arrived and see a "TruePower Premium Powerbook Battery".

I haven't even opened the box yet. Because I need the damn battery now, I'm probably going to keep it, but I can't help it but feel ripped off. I think the whole thing is quite dishonest. Hopefully it's a decent battery and it matches the look of my Powerbook.

I bought this through Amazon from AllMac. You've been warned.

4 out of 5 stars A nice one but not for Ibook.......2007-09-20

Pro: Strong, good-looking, convenient zippered shuttle, gives good protection to the laptop, and suitable space for adapter or mouse..

Con: Too small for Ibook(mine is ibook 12" G4), but suitable for my girl's IBM x60, although a little bit tight b/c she uses 8-cell battery.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for my 12" Powerbook.......2007-09-03

I bought a 12" Powerbook back in 2004 and did not buy a case at the time. I recently decided I would like one and tried to pick one up at the Apple store. Per the packaging, the case I bought was compatible with my 12" Powerbook. In reality, it was designed for the 13" Macbook so my 12" computer was very loose inside the case and slid around everywhere.

This case is designed for the 12" model so it fits like a glove. The added pocket is a great extra feature as well to put the power cord, extra battery etc. This is THE option for your 12" Powerbook.

4 out of 5 stars Works as designed for 12" G4 Powerbook.......2007-05-14

My 12" G4 Powerbook fits inside snugly; perfectly. There is a handy utility pocket that zips up & holds a few incidentals - cables, battery etc. This was priced a bit high but it fits and performs as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Works well with Dell laptops- TOSS that laptop case........2007-01-22

Such a great case, my DELL laptop slides into this case very snuggly-- and then fits into any other bag. FAR superior to having one of those outrageously large laptop bags.

Definitely recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2007-08-23

This is a great product. Can be used on a table to elevate the back of the keyboard, or on your lap (either flat or folded in half) to keep your legs cooler.

5 out of 5 stars Works for me!.......2007-03-27

I'd been using a similar product, the Targus Lapdesk, for years, until it finally broke. They redesigned it and the new model was/is junk so I went looking for a replacement. Found this and I've been very happy since. It's not as thick or sturdy as the Targus, which concerns me somewhat in terms of durability, but functionally it does exactly what it's supposed to. Note: the 'folded' position is for table, not lap use, it's too narrow for that. The 'unfolded' position is good for lap use and provides just enough space to work while remaining portable. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great for holding a hot laptop.......2006-11-10

Of all the stands I looked at to put under my Macbook, this was the simplest, most portable, and easy to use. It collapses into a thin form to put in the case with my laptop computer and holds it firmly with its non-slip surface. It's generous air openings help to disperse the heat from the machine and keep it off your lap or your desk.

    2 out of 5 stars ok product.......2006-07-19

It does not quite do all the functions it advertises. That folded position in the picture it will only do on a table. Odd being that it is for your lap. The gripy parts are nice and do keep the computer from sliding but the overall construction does feel a little weak. An ok buy but i would look around for somthing else.

4 out of 5 stars Fits my 12" powerbook well.......2006-06-15

This is a great laptop holder. It keeps the lap cool and has enough room for a external mouse (if you have a 12" laptop). You can also fold it in half and adjust it for better viewing angle on a desk or if use it folded when sitting in a narrow airplane seat. It works well with larger laptops too. The rubber grips on the surface hold the laptop well and help to keep it from slipping off. I would have given this a 5, but the rubber feet keep coming off. So far I have not lost them, but will try to glue them in more securely.
