5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-09

I am a professional Apple repair technician, and up until this point I had been using a 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 (single CPU) with no complaints. I hadn't been doing a lot of heavy graphics or editing work, so there really wasn't a need for me to get a dual processor G5 when I mostly did email, internet surfing, and word processing. Then things changed a few months ago, and I found myself doing more video and photo editing and processing. The 1.8 G5 started to show it's limitations. Still fast, but not as fast as desired. Slow enough to notice, anyway.

Today I got my hands on a Dual 2.0GHz G5. Wow! I was expecting about a 40-50% speed bump, but instead i have received a whopping 75% speed bump! Now, I am referring to the bump seen in processor intensive editing only. I have not seen as big of a jump in internet surfing or other more simple tasks, although I have noticed maybe a 10-20% bump there. This editing/processing bump has just blown me away, though. I had to come and share it with you guys. I mean it's really something. I'm still sitting here with my mouth open in astonishment as I watch it slash through tasks up to 4 times faster than before. And remember: I was already on a Power Mac G5. It isn't like I'm coming from an iMac or an iBook. Amazing.

Now I just pray that it will keep working! (In case you don't know, Apple Power Mac G5 desktops have a much lower reliability record than other desktops computers. Much lower. If you buy one of these, there is about a 10-20% chance that it will fail while you own it. I think this is compared with about 5% average in the rest of the market. I do hope Apple will do something about this going forward.) So if you are buying new or still under the one-year complimentary warranty, I highly, highly, recommend getting the AppleCare plan. I almost always preach against extended warranties for consumer electronics, but on a machine this expensive with a much worse reliability record, I think the rules are different. Plus, AppleCare treats you MUCH better than a standard extended warranty that you would get from most retail outlets.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Technology in an Amazing Machine.......2005-11-19

I converted to Apple computers back in law school, when I purchased my first Powerbook G4 (at the time, it was an amazing 400 mHz!) At first, I was very happy with Apple products: they were fast, easy to use, supported by amazing software developers, and oh so nice to look at and use.

This Power Mac DP G5, my eigth Mac computer since then, is no different. The technology powering this thing is amazing; the industrial design is incredible; the operating sound is amazingly quiet. I use this computer for anything from e-mail to Microsoft Office to web development. In every task, it purrs quietly and confidently, with tons of power to spare.

As a forced Windows user at work, I recommend every person who is unfortunate enough to have only a Windows computer at home buy a Mac. If not this Power Mac, find another Mac model for your needs. You will not be disappointed. If you are a current Mac user looking to get more from the wonderful OS X operating system and all it has to offer, I definitely recommend upgrading to something like this.

5 out of 5 stars Best computer i've ever owned, hands down!.......2005-11-15

I use Mac's and PC's for work, and keep this as my computer for home. Both have there uses, but I like the OS for the Mac alot better.

This G5, replaced an old B/W G3, I had upgraded with a 600 MhZ G4. Night and day difference between systems.

The G5 runs really good, and fast; except for boot-up which seems to take about 40 seconds . . . but I have yet to see a computer boot up much faster then this anyway.

The software that comes with this computer is really good stuff. I was very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars Pisses on the competition from a great height.......2005-11-12

having owned some 7 computers in as many years, i have to say that this is clearly the best by a long shot. it's my first mac and experience with the (formerly intimidating), tiger operating system. (i was brainwashed into believing windows is the most stable and user friendly os, hence its popularity and ubiquity).
i can safely say that i was grossly misinformed and my only regret with this purchase is not having made it sooner. this machine kills lawyers and all other pretenders within 100 yards.
no matter what you use a computer for, do yourself a favor, spend the extra money and get yourself a macintosh, and if you can afford it, make it this powermac. you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Raw power, great expandability, ease of use........2005-11-03

I've been using both Macs and PCs for about 12 years now. I prefer the Mac ten-fold over PCs. My latest Dual 2 Ghz G5 just reinforces that.

Among other graphics jobs, I edit video and create 2-D animation for broadcast, CD-ROMs, corporate, and internet. Yea, you can do this on the PC, but I get work done faster on my Macs.

This G5 is the third Mac in my arsenal, succeeding my Mac G4. As far as working with a dual processor machine, the Mac OS decides which application uses which processor. There are applications that can split work across both processors. These do benefit greater from a dual processor machine. But these are programs like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop that will benefit from splitting work across two chips. MS Word will not benefit. I've never waited for MS Word to finish rendering a document.

Adding on to the G5 is a breeze. With USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 & 800 ports, I have 4 external hard drives, a miniDV camera, my USB hub, scanner, and memory card reader all hooked up in harmony. Inside I have room for another hard drive and three PCI expansion ports. I upgraded the RAM to 2.5 GB for lots of work space those beefy video apps. Also, right out of the box (well, with an adapter) I'm running dual monitors. Not that I couldn't do that before since the Mac has been able to do that for about 12 years or so.

I can't tell you how much trouble I've had with my PCs and curse them every time something goes wrong. I don't have issues with my Mac. This is why I continue to buy Macs. Yes, they can be more expensive than a lot of PCs, but that's why people buy a BMW rather than a Hyundai. Besides, any cheap PC that is tricked out to do high-end work isn't going to be cheap very long.

Bottom line is if you want to get work done, buy a Mac. If you want to worry about crap infecting your machine, fiddling with spyware, and just use MS Word and surf the internet, get a PC.

    Product Description

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II, and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple remains committed to creating the best personal computers in the world, and its hardware and software products are widely regarded as being the most innovative in the industry.Newly designed from the inside out, with an ultrafast Xserve-based architecture, the dual processor Power Mac G4 delivers unprecedented performance. For your next creative leap, scientific breakthrough, or production challenge, expand the boundaries of possibility with the new Power Mac G4 - twin-engine supercomputer.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The new dual 867 MHz Power Mac G4 combines the brawn of two fast processors with improved system throughput, and features a high-performance graphics processor, a combination DVD player/CD burner, and the new Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar preloaded.

The dual 867 MHz processors enable the Power Mac to run professional applications like Adobe Photoshop up to 45 percent faster than a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4-based PC. And it's not all about processor speed--a 133 MHz system bus, new memory cache technology boosts, and other engineering improvements inspired by Apple's new Xserve server architecture boost the speed of throughput between main memory and the system controller.

Graphics performance is excellent, with nVidia's GeForce4 MX graphics processor and Mac OS X Jaguar's new Quartz Extreme--a breakthrough combination of software and hardware that accelerates the compositing of 2- and 3-D images using your graphics card instead of the main processor. This gives the Power Mac G4 an order-of-magnitude advance in graphics capabilities--including color, lighting, modeling, transformations, texture mapping, motion blur, and more. In addition, the Power Mac lets you spread your work across two monitors for a larger workspace.

This Power Mac comes with a fast 60 GB Ultra-ATA hard disk drive and three additional 3.5-inch hard disk drive expansion bays--with support for a total of up to four internal hard drives, for up to 480 GB of possible storage.

Since Mac OS X has the ability to burn CDs built right into the system software, you can burn data CDs to archive your work with point-and-click ease, minutes after you take your new system out of its box. It also accommodates a second DVD or CD drive, so you can even watch a DVD movie while your work is burning to disc, or archive material at the same time.

You also get the benefit of built-in Gigabit Ethernet for shooting large files across your network at previously unheard-of speeds, the 108-key Apple Pro keyboard, a 56K modem, four USB ports and two high-speed FireWire ports for connecting all kinds of peripherals, and an AirPort card slot. Four PCI expansion slots are also integrated directly into the main system controller, speeding expansion cards' throughput.

    1 out of 5 stars unbelieveably noisy.......2003-02-09

I've never written a review for Amazon before, but I feel I must to urge people away from this this product. The primary issue with it is the fan noise. At times it sounds like a jet fighter taking off, at others a whiny AC or air filter set to maximum power. When you're trying to concentrate to get work done, or playing a game, it gets in the way. That alone would be enough to avoid a purchase, but there are other issues.

It's prone to crash when you use an app that is intensive in sound and 3D graphics - in other words, games. When this 1st happened I went thru multiple diagnostics to find out what the issue was. One thing I found, from using Apple's own testing tools, was that the memory chip was corrupted. I got that replaced, but later crashes still occur. I later find out from developers, that their sound API is very unstable.

'Crashes happen in PC's too' you may say. That's true, but when this so called uncrashable OS crashes, its messy and un-graceful. You can't force quit the program under a severe crash, and there is no way to force a reboot - no reset button, no cntl-alt-delete mechanism outside of pressing the power button for 10 seconds, or unplugging the cord (and I'm aware of the combo with esc-opt-eject whatever, that doesn't work).

This is obviously a system that was rushed out of the gate w/o sufficient testing and review. By far the worst computer Apple ever produced. Think different Apple.

4 out of 5 stars Good If You Need Flexibility.......2002-11-28

Originally I set out with the 17" iMac as the kind of machine I'd like most. But when I saw the actual screen at the Apple Store, I found it to handle text and pictures fairly poorly [not that it's worse than most LCD screens out there] and so the only alternative was to go to the Tower, which also gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of memory, hard-drives and driving multiple screens at the same time [important if you're going to do video editing].

I can't say much for Apple's quality control, as it seems I ended up with a lemon with my first one, after a very frustrating week spending endless hours on the phone with the help desk. They finally agreed to replace it, and I haven't had any major problems since. Keep in mind that the software bundle with the Tower does NOT include any word processing application. Currently there is a deal to buy Microsoft's Office suite in conjunction with a computer purchase for $199, and I think that's a great deal for a superior product to it's PC mothership.

OS X.2/Jaguar is definitely very sophisticated, yet simpler to use than OS 9.2. But it certainly isn't nearly as reliable as they would have you believe. There are still going to be numerous reboots necessary--just not nearly as many as with another OS [certainly not as many as on Windows ___].

There is definitely the idea in the computer world, from the software point of view, that Mac/OS X makes you some kind of "red-haired stepchild." The difficulty is more with websites/software that don't make clear they have no Mac/OS X version right upfront. There are also some problems with printers etc. not having the proper drivers. But in compensation, the Mac "community" [and I think it can be rightly called that] steps in with a much more personalized response to specific issues to help you out. They want to help you have the best computer experience possible, and I think on balance you end up with one with a Mac in general, and specifically with this Tower should you need the specific flexibility I've mentioned.

I recommend getting the "Superdrive" option with it, so you can burn DVD's for storage or video display. Also I recommend buying extra RAM memory [DDR memory is more expensive, yet not noticeably faster--but you have to get it], and another hard drive. It's a pain to install [why can't they put any time in the design of things like that as they do other elements??], but great to have onboard instead of as a firewire-connected model. I really like my Monsoon speakers as well.

I got the LaCie 19-III monitor, which is terrific. Unfortunately OS X's "text smoothing" results in blurry, inconsistent text letters [even on their Cinema Displays], but I find the CRT superior for color correcting photos/video and a lot cheaper for what you're getting than LCD's. Apple customer service is definitely a cut above the average intelligence, but they're not very good at follow-up or dealing with major issues that don't meet their initial job descriptions. The also are only open until 6PM pst, so that leaves out a lot of time when you may need help.

Bottom line: not a breakthrough Apple product, but a good value and the best computer if you're going to be using Photoshop, iMovie/Final Cut Pro etc. and want to use monitors that are going to produce the best results.

    5 out of 5 stars Power^2.......2002-11-07

This computer is FAAAAAAAST. Fast is the only way to describe it. Having TWO G4 processors at 867 MHZ makes this machine absolutely scream through all of the tasks I can put it through. Since OS X takes advantage of both processors as well as the velocity "Altivec" engine, all system tasks are completed instantaneously.

Now that more and more applications are being released for OS X, there is no need to boot into OS 9(although it is still possible). OS X is the future of computing. A Rock solid UNIX foundation ensures that your computer will virtually never crash. I have had mine for almost two months, and the system has never crashed on me. Apps(Internet explorer, for one) have crashed before but it doesn't cause a full fledged system lockup.

The one thing that you will need to do is buy an extra 512 MB of RAM. In this case, you need PC2100 DDR RAM(266MHz).

The graphics performance of this machine is also quite impressive. I personally bought the Radeon 9000 Pro with my machine but this particular model comes stock with the GeForce 4 MX. This card is good for current games(Q3, RTCW, Medal of Honor, Warcraft 3), but the lack of shaders and advanced Anti Aliasing capability mean that games like Doom 3 will struggle to play smoothly.

The Specs listed on Amazon's page are a little misleading. It says, for instance that the machine comes with 1 MB of L2 cache, when in fact it comes with 1 MB of L3 cache as well as 256k L2 cache. the L3 cache really adds an extra kick to the processors ability to crunch information without having to access the RAM or the hard drive.
Also, it says the machine is not 3d capable. Huh? I believe the fact that it has a 3d card makes it quite capable.
Amazon's specs for the combo drive are also incorrect. the CD-RW part of the combo drive can write at 16x and rewrite at 10x.

Anyway, from my own experience, this is a wonderful machine that has it waiting for me more than me waiting for it. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Pricey, but better than most in it's price range.........2002-10-27

This computer is pricey, but it is certainly better than most of the pc's in this price range. This Power Mac is well built, like all Apple products, and runs the world class Mac OS X. This operating system is awesome, and combined with the stability of it's Linux base, and the dual Power PC processors, it's nearly impossible to freeze or crash this computer. And you couldn't bog it down if you wanted to. I've had mine for several weeks and haven't had it fail me yet.

All in all, this a great system. It's sort of like the BMW of computers. And if you buy Virtual PC you can even run Windows XP on this system. There are no limits to what you can do with a Power Mac. Truely awesome....

    5 out of 5 stars Great computer.......2002-09-28

Since personal computers first became available and affordable circa 1980, I have owned three different PC-compatible computers (a 286 running MS-DOS, a 486 running Windows 3.1, and a Pentium running Windows 95/98). When it came time to replace this last machine, I decided to take a look at Apple's product line. I liked what I saw. Their new operating system -- OS X -- is based on Unix, which means it can run all the GNU software. A world-class GUI called Aqua runs on top of that. My only question was which machine to buy. I decided that the towers provided more of an upgrade path than the iMac and eMac. So I bought the dual 867 MHz machine, and am very happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars why even read a review? i can only rave about my G4!!.......2003-02-15

after owning a powerbook for three years, and using many iMacs at work the G4 has been a revellation for speed and reliability. it never crashes and has only frozen on me a handful of times over the year. i can multi-task like crazy, opening 700 MB of images in photoshop and doing other projects while i wait for them to open. the time saved in allowing me to complete many tasks at once is incredible. i am no longer impatient when working, because of the numerous tasks the G4 can perform at once.
the G4 is also very flexible, since i bought mine a little over one year ago i have added a VGA card (in order to have an 'extended desktop') and a second hardrive.

    it's an awesome tool!!

5 out of 5 stars A powerful machine worth the price.......2003-02-08

I just received this computer today. Within minutes, I had it set up and running and surfing the web. Thus far, it is definetly a very quiet computer. Its got a lot of power to it and comes loaded with OS X with all the great multimedia apps like iTunes, iDVD, etc. They have all opened and worked quickly and flawlessly. Overall, I would have to say it is very very fast. The computer has also never frozen, slowed up, or had any problem completing the tasks i've given it thus far and shows no signs of doing so in the future. I highly recommend getting Apple Pro speakers with it, as they enhance the sound quality drastically (the sound quality of that singal built in speaker just will not due for me, the only con i have found so far). This is a great machine that I will be using every day and I believe that it is worth every penny spent on it. Apple has done it again!

      2 out of 5 stars hardware problem.......2006-09-21

I have been very happy with the performance of the G5 but for one very annoying feature. Very recently, a high-pitch sound appeared from the otherwise very quiet desktop unit. Browsing of the large internet Mac community pages revealed that my unit is not the only one with that problem. While the final diagnostic awaits confirmation, the majority of comments points to flaws in the design of the processor control and/or in the powersupply. To my great dismay, Apple customer service showed itself very uncorporative. For such an expensive equipment, low-end service is not acceptable. In conclusion, the computer performance warrants 4 stars, the recent problems led to a very annoying noise problem that lowers it to 2 stars, and the response from Apple is just disappointing (does not qualify for any star). One Apple a day keeps the doctor away. But only one without worms...

I got a new power mac G5 with 2.3 ghz daul core with 2 Gb ram and 250 gb hd and 256 vram. This is a major upgrade from my crappy dell. I bought this computr so I can flies from my ibook at school and put on the powermac then bring backthe file to my ibook. I also bought for games, photos, making music, lstening to music , making movies and much More. Once you are mac you never go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no question that you get what you pay for with computers. Macs do one thing - exactly what they are supposed to! It is great to have a system that runs flawlessly and FAST! I use this for boutique digital music production, and there is no system that I have used that compares to this. My suggestion is that if you run a business on a computer, and need speed to make your workflow happen, then this is a no brainer.

If you need it, buy it. Never mind how much it costs, by the time you add memory, monitors, applecare, peripherals and software, you will spend $8000 or more. If you want to read e-mail, surf the web, play games, or balance your checkbook: this is not the computer for you. If you want a computer to do desktop publishing, image manipulation, 3d animation, ray tracing, or all of them at once: this is the one.
First, buy the apple care protection. It is so cheap, it's a no-brainer. Then, buy more memory. Remember, 4 Gigabytes is one Gig per processor, so don't be cheap. Upgrades must be done 2 chips at a time. I started with four, 1 GB chips, in addition to the original 512 MB. This seemed to be a wise decision at the time. I can expand or replace, whichever is most economical, next time I want to upgrade. Next, purchase a good surge protector. A UPS would be better, but keep in mind: this system will draw a lot of power. The power supply in the CPU can draw up to 12 amps. That's more than 1400 watts, before you even connect a monitor. A suitable surge protector should handle 15 amps continuously, and a 2000VA UPS is the minimum I would consider. It would not be a bad idea to give your computer system it's own 20 amp breaker. Next, buy your software. Adobe CS is about $1300, but worth the investment. It is a great package which I might someday review, if I ever get tired of playing with it. Next, monitors. Yes, plural. For graphic design and publishing, 2 is the minimum. It is so nice to be able to view your image full-screen with no toolboxes or palettes covering it up. Also, bigger is better. Other nice accessories include: pen tablet, air-port card, I-pod or other portable drive, scanner, printer, and speakers. A fast, reliable internet connection is nice, too.

I've had the new PowerMac Dual 2 Ghz. G-5 with the 20" Apple Display for about 5 weeks now.
I've found MY computer! This rascal is just a joy to use. So fast - so quiet! All the tech details are written about these Dual G-5s by many others. All I can add is that the whole package is so smooth that I can't see how I could ever tire of it.
No more trading computers every few years for this child........

Okay so it may not be the fastest (2.5Ghz) but given the urgency I had then to get a new computer, I settled for the 2GHZ and not the 2.5 which I have to wait about 3 weeks more for it. After spending 4 years with a 500Mhz G4, upgrading to a dual 2.0GHZ is a MAJOR step forward for me. You start to notice the subtle differences in performance immediately. iTunes rip way faster, iMovie is simply a joy to use now versus the snail crawl I lived with previously... Photoshop filters zzpped through... and all of this amazing Herculean tasks are done with a barely audible whisper from the fans cooling the processors within.

I had mine customed configured by Apple- internal bluetooth, 128MB graphics card, 2.00 GB RAM... and a 23" cinema display. The only thing I got different was the Phillipe S+arck mouse from MS. i think it looks cooler than the white button mouse and more in sync with the whole aluminium silver look. Now I wish they would make the keyboards ala the PowerBooks- glow in the dark.

        5 out of 5 stars Slick.......2004-12-20

This is a great box with flexibility for upgrades through the years. My last Mac, a Powermac G4 was built in 1999 (I've since upgraded the video card and processor), and is still running well, but I wanted the extra speed for Photoshop. I'll pass the other one down to my kids. They've been salivating over it for some time now.

This Mac will hold it's value for a long time. Unlike getting a PC, you won't throw it away in 2 years, nor will you want to. They really become more like a friend than a computer. The operating system is wonderfully friendly, stable, and quite customizable. I've never had a virus. My former Mac crashed once in the entire time I used it, due to bad software. Mac OS X plays well with Windows XP. My husband uses a Windows box, and we've had no issues with networking and file sharing.

Although this computer is not for the faint of pocketbook, think of it as an investment. It will last and work well for many years. The PCI-X slots definitely improve your upgrade options. In addition, I expect several 3rd party companies will offer processor upgrades within the next 1-2 years.

By the way, I'm enjoying it's blazing fast speed, and it's quietness. General operation is much snappier, and applying a filter in a large Photoshop file takes 2 seconds instead of 10. Response and video quality in iMovie is markedly improved. Pretty slick!

5 out of 5 stars Blowing Away The PC.......2004-11-28

As a PC user and builder for the last 10 years, I finally decided to migrate over to the Mac side and get away from most of the system hangs, crashes, and virus issues that MS Windows is so prominent for. I have always looked to the Mac innovations each year but could not justify the purchase. Now with a UNIX platform, the most stable of all computer land, it was a logical migration for me.

I am completely pleased with my purchase. I've had the dual 2.0 for over a month now with no issues what so ever in terms of performance or update installations. I will be using this powerhouse for a marketing and graphic design company at the first of the year.

I see a few negative reviews here and there, one on Amazon, and the only thing that I can say, is that these people either have never used computers or they are PC "plants" so to speak and issue negative reviews on the Mac whenever possible. Granted, Mac or PC, they are both machines and will not be perfect in every way. Sometimes you may even get a lemon as with anything you buy.

Overall, the Mac is a solid investment, does not depreciate as fast, and you will be amazed at the Mac culture, support forums, and everything else that comes along with the purchase.
If you are on the fence, check some reviews or go to an Apple store to solidify your purchase. It all comes down to preference, but when you finally work on a Mac, you will find out that PC land is more for the amatuer (i.e. games, etc.), while Mac is for the professional or high end user (i.e. Business and Graphic applications). It's the Mercedes versus the Hyundai. You have to figure out which one you are and then decide.

1 out of 5 stars APPLE, WHERE IS YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE???.......2004-10-20

I recently purchased 7 Powermac G5's to replace our G4's. 4 of these had serious issues. One still is not running!

These were purchased in April of 2004, and all were purchased with the 'Applecare' Warrantee extension program. Apple has given us slow support, even the service 'depots' that they have me take the machines to complain about slow parts replacement, etc.(Slow as in weeks to months for parts that sometimes have to be re-ordered Problems range from OS to Hardware issues.

The machine that still is not running has had the logic board, hard drive, memory, SuperDrive, and CPU's replaced over the last six months with no change in the original problem. I called Apple to beg for a new machine, get put on hold, passed to new techs, and still no resolution.

I have grown very tired of this issue, and would like to take advantage of our six month old 3000.00 purchase. I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend the G5 or APPLECARE SUPPORT. Go spend your 3k on a PC...if that is even possible anymore. (applecare case # 42430940)

I just recently got the Dual 1.25 GHz PowerMac G4. I had been using the 350Mhz G4 "Yikes" Machine, and needed a computer that could do video editing. This thing rocks. It works great. You don't need the G5 to do video. As long as you've got a dual proccesor, you're fine. There isn't much to say about this. You can't describe it in words. But please, whoever is reading this right now, please buy one. For your own sake.
There's Apple, and then there's everybody else.

        5 out of 5 stars I love my Mac!.......2004-02-21

This is my first Mac. I've had my Mac for about 3 months now. Mac is just plain friendlier than Windows. I am using the same monitor I was using with my old PC; this Mac comes with an adapter and you just connect it to the existing monitor cable and plug it in to the Mac. From taking it out of the box to plugging everything in really was a breeze. Before I started, someone suggested I'd want to increase the memory, so I bought a 256 MB RAM chip here on Amazon after tracking down that it was the right one (Edge Memory 256M 2.5V 184-pin DDR DIMM PC-2700 CL 2 ( PE187903)). There are instructions on the Apple site, and it really was easy to install, just open the side door (no tools needed) and then slide the chip in place. Be sure to push it in firmly. Once it was in, I closed the door and started up the Mac for the first time.

I was going to buy a book to tell me how to use the Mac, but ended up just playing around until I got the hang of it, but I think I'll buy a book now to see if there are more neat things I can do with it. It took a little while to get used to using Apple C instead of Control C, and the new mouse it comes with - it is just a single click mouse. I wondered how I'd like that, but now I like it better than the two button mouse. You just hold the mouse down a fraction longer and get everything the second button used to do with some programs, with others you use control and click the mouse to get the second button things. File Management is arranged really simply, as is the System Preferences (for finer tuning of your default applications, I recommend downloading something free called Default Apps that gets added to your System Preferences and makes setting default applications for types of files easier.) There is no registry like with Windows. And the computer itself never crashes or freezes up. If an application freezes up (and this has only happened once) just go the Apple at the top of the screen and click on "Force Quit" for the application. Pretty much everything is intuitive on the Mac. Instead of fighting with the machine, the machine is there for ME. A refreshing change.

One of the first things I did was to remove two things I never want to use again, Internet Explorer and the Microsoft Office (a trial version came with the Mac.) On Mac getting rid of IE is as easy as dragging it to the trash can. I was using Netscape 7 on Windows and very happy with that, but upgraded to the latest Mozilla 1.6 (what Netscape 7 is based on) for the Mac. Safari is also good, but not as good as Mozilla. I like the mailer that comes with Mozilla, but found myself using the built in Mac Mail from the dock, instead, it is just so easy to use. The dock feature is really neat, you can drag the applications you use the most to the bar at the bottom of the screen. Installing additional software is also very easy, just double click on the application install icon. I also bought Apple Works (this can handle Microsoft Office documents) and this meets all my word processing/spreadsheet needs for a low price.

I looked around and found nice inexpensive apps for other needs. Photoshop Elements has lots of great image editing features, I really love this. Transmit for FTP and Page Spinner for web development are really good applications, too. The Mac comes with Itunes for playing music, and Quicktime. I installed Real Player by downloading it from their site.

My scanner, printer, camera, and card reader were easy to set up, too. My printer and camera are older, so I needed to go to the Canon site and download the latest OS X drivers. But that didn't take long at all and they worked fine the first time. I use a regular Lexar USB hub and the Lexar Jump Drive I got from Amazon and they work great. I have an older serial connection Palm IIIc, so I got a USB connector and then downloaded the latest Palm OS X desktop and it works fine. One tip I found out, plug the Palm into the keyboard USB port to sync.

Everything is easier with a Mac. I just don't know why I took so long to get one!

        4 out of 5 stars Loud Fans.......2003-12-31

Pretty new to the Apple thing. After being frustrated with PC's I made the jump to Apple G4. So far I like the straight forward approach, and I'm doing really cool things on Pro Tools recording software. I'm also starting to learn a little bit about Flash, Photoshop, and Quark which is really fun. If you want a good computer for creative endeavors Apple is the way to go. My main complaint about the computer is the loud fans. There is a constant hum and it makes it impossible to do any quiet computing.
