While it's a reliable printer for standard applications, the Canon S600 also offers plenty of jazzy possibilities for amateur crafters and photographers. A monochrome resolution of 600 x 600 dpi and color resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 dpi provide impressive clarity and crispness on either plain paper or more unusual materials, such as magnet sheets, transparencies, and glossy photo paper. The included Canon imaging software provides photo editing options for users with Canon digital cameras, and management tools for all stored images.
The installation process was outlined clearly on the setup sheet, and configuring the printer was simple. Drivers loaded smoothly (Mac users have an extra download), and the four separate ink tanks are color-coded to ensure proper placement. The paper-loading tray is crafted from an impressively sturdy plastic, and the lower receiving tray folds back over the case when not in use. The quick-start guide is something you'll want to keep handy if you plan on using many different paper types with your S600--each paper style has a different maximum load, and overloading this printer is a sure way to cause paper jams.
Colors and tones were gorgeous, and images retained crisply defined detail on both matte and glossy paper. The overall print speed seemed to vary a fair amount; while standard monochrome office documents clipped along at about 12 pages per minute (ppm), detailed colored sheets slowed to about 4 ppm. While this speed is acceptable for most home users, it may be frustrating at higher outputs. All management occurs through dialog boxes that are easy to navigate, and the two-button operation is ideal for those who like their technology plain and simple. I bought this "refurbished" printer at a bargain price a year ago and could not be any happier with it. You don't have to replace the ink cartridge with one $$ investment. Instead you buy $$-$$ individual cartridges only for the color run out. Its great. I love the quality of the colors. Its my favorite printer ever.
SLOW; Bad Software.......2003-04-21
Sometimes this machine is horribly, horribly slow. It does not seem to depend on what my computer is doing. It can be up to three minutes per page. And usually it slows down just when I need it to [speed up]!
Also, the software leaves much to be desired. I can't program in my preferences and have to keep clicking time after time that I want "draft" mode or "reverse pages."

I bought the Canon S600 Printer 2 weeks ago and I'm not happy.
1. It prints 1 PAGE OF TEXT IN 3 MINUTES (on parallel port) and 2.3 PAGES IN 1 MINUTE (on USB port), both in draft mode.
2. Don't expect much help from Canon support technicians: they'll beat you around the bushes until you get sick and tired and give up any help. No return possibility or exchange with another printer is available from Canon.
3. Don't expect to print more 218 text pages on 1 cartridge of black ink.
4. Even my Lexmark Z11,Xerox and HP 600 printers are much faster.
5. If you want to print in duplex mode, this one doesn't do it--you have to turn each page around by hand.
6. The only good thing: the print and colors are significantly clearer than all other printers cited above.
So, before bying a Canon printer, think minimum 5 times!

Have had this printer for about a year now at least. Output quality is excellent, but maybe I just haven't figured out printing pictures the optimal way. Consumable cost is reasonable, but I wish third party refills were a good option. Printing speed is slow at times, but being a home user I really can't justify paying more for a faster printer. Overall very happy with purchse.
Great graphics and text.......2002-07-20
I have been using this printer since 11/01 and have nothing but praise for it. With the exception of the kiniptions it goes through when it is first turned on this printer has both speed and print quality. I am using mine on a HP laptop via parallel port and sharing it on a home network. Ink lasts a long time and is inexpensive to replace. Never had a paper jam or mis printed page with over 2500 sheet pulled through. Have also printed many photos on photo paper with great results (thats when the ink really gets used). Overall a quality printer at a great price.

Still Kicking.......2007-07-24
I was surprised when I noticed the low score for this UPS. I have had mine for at least 18 months and haven't had any problems. My power has gone off 3 or more times with this UPS and it has always done its job. Longest power was out was probably 20 minutes and it was there online for me powering my pc/monitor/router/cable modem the entire time.
Great product for the price.......2007-05-21
I own two of the XS-1000 series, plus the company I help to support has about 20 more of these exact models being used to help maintain their none critical systems during power outages. We have had all of these products going on 3 years now and they have performed wonderfully. In fact I was just going online to look for replacement batteries for these units as it is close to the time we need to start replacing batteries. Overall I've been very pleased with these units.
APC failes the quality test.......2007-01-30
I experienced the same problem with my APC XS-1000 as noted by several others here.
It worked great then the red OVERLOAD light and alarm went off and it is now completely useless. This is an expensive piece of equipment with a single purpose and it failed to perform past 11 months. I have other Battery Backup UPS's from other makers and they are all over 3 years old and not a single one has failed.
This is obviously a faulty part installed at the factory and it seems they are still pumping them out. I guess they will finally correct the problem when their customer base falls off the page. This will definitely be the last APC product I purchase and I will warn my customers about it as well.
Erratic performance after a month.......2006-09-22
I have a total of four UPSes at home including the BX1000, which I purchased from CompUSA with a hope for high performance. The symptom of frequent switching beween "on-line" and "on battery started" after a month or so, when the replacement peirod at CompUSA had just expired. It beeps every few minutes while it is on. Sometimes, the power dies and my screen becomes blank. I have had good faith in APC's product, thus it is a disappointment.
Design Problem.......2006-07-16
I own two XS-1000 and one XS-1500 Back-UPS units (also use BX1000 designation). Each is in service, with the XS-1000 units loaded to about 250 watts and less than 300 VA and the XS-1500 loaded to 500W/600VA. Each of these units has failed with symptoms like those described by other writers (overload light suddenly comes on and cannot be reset normally). Unlike the other writers, I repaired my units myself. So far, none have failed again.
It is significant that I live in a region experiencing frequent power fluctuations and outages, hence need for a backup UPS. It is also noteworthy that circuit boards and circuit designs are essentially identical for the 1000 and 1500 models, with extra battery connections and a fan being prominent additions for the 1500 model.
In all instances, one or more of the six simulated sine wave switching FET transistors (34N20 or similar 20NQ20) failed shorted. This, incidentally, correctly causes the overload indicator to come on, since the on-battery circuit is then definitely overloaded! This protectective action in fact saves major parts of the unit from further damage, including battery overheating and possible explosion.
Qualitatively, the APC units are very well constructed and seemingly well designed. Additionally, the 34N20 FET transistors are a good choice for this application, and thus the failures are surprising. Several possibilities are suggested: (1) There is a latent quality defect in the transistors. Once one of the six fails, others will fail quickly until the DC/DC inverter stored energy is dissipated; (2) A momentary under or over voltage condition causes the AVR autotransformer circuit to switch in at about the same time the unit attempts to go on battery, possibly resulting in energy stored in the transformer being dumped into the 34N20 switching bank and exceeding a transistor's surge capacity; (3) One of the relays sticks or AVR/backup relay combinations "make before break" during a momentary utility outage or glitch.
Whatever the cause, it seems evident based on my three unit failures and those similar ones reported by other writers, that this defect, though perhaps infrequent for most customers, is nevertheless an issue for potential buyers who most need backup protection.
APC telephone representatives, though friendly, are not very helpful; the company is unwilling to provide a circuit diagram or even a block diagram of their products. Shipping costs are high even if the unit is still in warranty. Until this defect is acknowledged and corrected, these otherwise attractive units may not be suitable for use under the very conditions for which they were designed.

Good Card, Bad Fan.......2007-04-22
I bought one of these, was very happy with the performance of the card itself, however, the fan died and by the time the source of the problem was found the card was damaged beyond repair. So, thinking this was a fluke I again bought the same card, but lo and behold the fan died AGAIN, this time I've hopefully caught it before the damage is permanent and have replaced the fan, but I will never buy a Radeon again.

Freaking Sweet!.......2005-09-20
When I bought my Vaio RZ-40C1B, I was focusing on the video card and the RAM, because I would be doing lots of music mixing/editing, (for my band) video editing, and photo editing. It ran very well through these tasks, because of the 9800 PRO and the 1 GB of SDRAM. When I got into PC gaming, I noticed that this card could handle EVERYTHING. Everything from Halo, DOOM 3, Unreal Tournament, Warcraft 3, everything. It was just amazing. Now, when I buy games, I don't even look at the system requirements. I purchased this video card expecting to receive a non-OEM, genuinely original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb adapter. After all, that is what is advertised, and the picture shown is that of an original ATI 9800 Pro box. Nowhere in this item description is the manufacturer JETWAY mentioned. The box you will receive upon buying this card is different from what is pictured above, as is the product, which is manufactured by a company called Jetway; you can find this card on their website at www.jetway.com.tw. I will be honest here and say that despite the card not being what I expected (and more importantly, not being what I paid to have sent to me), its performance has so far been acceptably good so I probably won't go through the hassle of returning it. The only problem I have had has been occasional white/multi-colored flickering of polygons, but it doesn't happen extremely frequently. Unfortunately when it happens in dark areas in games such as Half-Life 2 it can be quite noticable. I am not sure if this is due to the card being a Jetway or not, having never used a truly original ATI 9800 Pro..
The bottom line however is that the product being sold here is not the same as what is described and what you are lead to believe you are buying. Thus in what could have otherwise been a perfectly satisfactory transaction, I am forced to rate the item and the seller poorly, because in my book, lying to the customer is a pretty poor business practice. If you are looking to buy an all-original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb card, don't buy it here.
