Customer Reviews:
Works OK till it works!!.......2006-11-24
I bought it from a reseller and was easy to install and worked great for about 6 months and one day for no apparent reason I started getting "The scanner optical module is locked" error. Since then I have tried reinstalling drivers as well as software with no results. People I have read recommeding reisntalling OS. But to me if you have to reinstall the OS to make a scanner work, the piece is not worth having. I will just look for another scanner.
Mixed results.......2006-05-05
I bought this refurbished and it's a good thing too because I missed the locking problem a lot of people have been mentioning. The scanner worked decently in the beginning when I was using it in Windows 98, sometimes I'd have to fight with it to get it to work right, but it usually did.
Then when I upgraded to XP Pro SP2, it installed fairly easy. But intermittantly, and with increasing frequency, their XP driver crashes (usually in mid-scan), and I constantly have to reinstall the driver to keep working on my scans.
The scans I have made with this were all beautiful, and when it's working, it's a pleasure to use. But Visioneer writes really crappy drivers. There's no way their XP driver got a real "Designed for XP" rating from Windows Hardware Quality Labs, no designed-for-xp software would work so poorly and place all the blame on SP2. I have been wondering whether to go to the hassle to dual-boot to Windows 98 whenever I want to use the scanner, or to buy a new scanner. I think I'm going to buy a different brand, and you probably should too.
This scanner is great for the price!.......2004-12-15
I don't know what the heck everyone else is complaining about. I've had this scanner for more than two years and the only problem I've had is that I now have to jiggle the cord to get the power supply to stay on. That's probably because I've used the thing so darn much.
I've scanned hundreds of pictures that came out extremely crisp and sharp and have used the TextBridge (OCR) software to scan chapters of books into Word.
The software that comes with this Visioneer 8900 is definitely not intuitive but that's okay with me because I use Corel to do all my photo editing. All it takes is a little patience the first time to learn how to adjust the scanning quality and color. After that, it should be a breeze.
One the downside - this scanner first came out three years ago so it's a bit bulky and there are slimmer, sleeker models now available. But, if you can purchase one used for about $30-$40, it's definitely worth it.
Bad machine,,,,bad company.......2004-08-13
Out of the box it had an intermittant problem. You get an error box that says the optical module is locked. Only it isn't. Go to the web site and they have a virtual troubleshooter that is absolutely of no use. Call the company customer service and they tell you to call tech support,(at $2.00 per minute on a 900 line. Because this is out of production, they don't care. Definitely don't buy this for a quarter. It would be a waste of a good quarter
One little design error.......2004-04-03
This is a great scanner for the money. Unfortunately the design engineers made one little mistake which I corrected. It took care of the "scanner locked" problem. Now I love it. The software is great, the ergonomics are great, and it is FAST! To fix it is very simple, and requires no electronic skills.
Added 9-12-04 So many people have emailed me re the fix I decided to add it here. Unfortunately the fix did not work with most of those who emailed me. My Scanner works very well with Win98SE. I suspect many of those with problems are having trouble with some aspect of their software/OS. I frequently Format and reinstall my OS when my machines get sluggish. Re formatting is absolutely necessary in my humble opinion, especially when you are connected. Its like the garage, you have to clean it out once in a while. I pressure wash mine. :-)
My Repair, given freely, so dont sue me:
Remove two screws on left side under rubber plugs. #1 Phillips, thin screw driver needed.
2. Rotate cover with glass up and to the right and pull hooks out of loops. Lay to the side.
3. Remove lock button from base by squeezing hooked ends together, and push out of hole.
4. Grind or sand down protrusions that stick up from bottom of case. They are what the scanner carriage gets wedged on.
5. Check to make sure wire leads to front controls are not pinched to the point of being severed.
6. Clean glass, lube rails with molylube and Re-assemble without lock.
This is what I did. It worked great.

Product Description
The CentreCOM Micro Transceivers are 10Base-2 and 10Base-T compliant transceivers designed to reduce Ethernet cabling costs. Compact size allows these transceivers to connect directly to the workstation, bringing thin Ethernet or Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) wiring directly to the workstation. With UTP and inexpensive coax network media, distances up to 100 meters between workstations can be supported using UTP, and up to 185 meters using coax. The AT-MX20T, AT-210T and AT-210TS transceivers incorporate other functions that offer improved network reliability for workstations. The 10Base-T link integrity test function provides a continuous test of the connection to the multiport repeater. A test pulse is periodically transmitted and expected at the companion transceiver's receive side. If the pulse is not seen on the receive side, the transceiver is placed into link test fail mode. Normal operation of the transmit side is inhibited and the "Link" LED is turned off. Normal operation is resumed when the link is re-established by the reception of a valid packet or two valid link pulses. On all models Signal Quality Error (SQE)/Heartbeat test can easily be enabled or disabled via an externally accessible switch. The AT-210T and AT-210TS both have a single LED that indicates the status of the SQE test switch.

Incorrect Product Topped Only by Bad Customer Service Info.......2004-07-15
Amazon's customer service rep named Meenakshi Thiyagrajan responded to an eMail questioning this product as follows (QUOTE:) I do understand the frustration you have. I kindly suggest you to go ahead and place the order for "ATI TECH RADEON 9800 128MB PCI-VIDADPT ( 100-436009 )". The cost of this is $92.99 and we do sell only 9800 and not 9200.(END QUOTE)
BUNK, BUNK BUNK! They shipped the 9200, which is a PCI only, more primitive, weaker unit. If you need the AGP capable 9800, this listing is a cruel joke.
Please modify or remove..........2004-07-15
Just a note that I was sent this item twice, and in both cases received a 9200 instead of a 9800. IMHO, it should be modified or removed....
This is not a Radeon 9800.......2004-07-11
This model number matches the Radeon 9200, not the Radeon 9800.
I think this is a TYPO........2004-07-09
9800 128MB card for $93.00 would be a deal. Get more information before buying.

Amazon.com Product Description
Despite its entry-level designation in Canon's digital lineup, the 2-megapixel A40 is a surprisingly advanced model with excellent picture quality and more manual features than you'll find on most digital point-and-shoots.
Resolution
With resolutions of up to 5 megapixels now available in other cameras, the 2-megapixel chip in the A40 may seem wimpy, but for the camera's intended user, 2 million pixels is a great balance between performance and price. This resolution means gorgeous full-screen images on your computer (even with a 19-inch monitor) and prints that look great at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. If you're hoping for a camera that captures even detail in each photo, consider Canon's 3-megapixel S30 or 4-megapixel S40.
Optics
A 3x optical zoom lens (35-105mm equivalent) aids in photo composition, and an additional 2.5x digital zoom (7.5x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom reduces the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly. Two systems help ensure your pictures will be perfectly focused, even in challenging conditions: a multizone autofocus works even when the subject of your photo isn't in the center of the scene, and in low-light situations (a particular weakness of many digital cameras), a focus-assist lamp sends out a small patterned beam to help the camera accurately determine distance.
More Features
Though it's primarily designed as a point-and-shoot, the A40 includes a surprising number of advanced features for photographers who want more creative control, including aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes, exposure compensation, low-light manual shutter speeds, manual ISO and white balance, and stitch assist, plus black-and-white, sepia, vivid, and neutral modes.
A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, these clips can last from 10 to 30 seconds. The limited length and resolution of these clips guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.
The A40 is the successor to last year's A20. Physically, the two cameras are nearly identical, but the new model has substantially more manual controls and a movie mode.
Power
The A40 uses four AA batteries, and a set of alkalines is included. We don't recommend using alkaline batteries in digital cameras unless you have no alternative, since the high power demands of digital cameras drain alkaline batteries ridiculously quickly. Instead, we prefer lithium batteries for occasional users, since these last much longer and also stay fresh if your camera sits unused for months at a time. If you use the camera more than once every couple of weeks, we strongly recommend getting a set of rechargeable NiMH batteries and a charger. These can be recharged hundreds of times and hold an excellent charge, but will lose their power in as little as a month of disuse. Many people solve this problem by purchasing a charger with two sets of batteries, keeping one set in the camera and the other in the charger at all times.
Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on standard Type I CompactFlash cards. Consider the included 8 MB card a starter capacity, since its 12-picture limit means you'll need to return to your computer often to transfer images and free up the card for more pictures. A 128 MB card is a great size for this camera, storing around 200 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.
Printing
Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with the A40. Using these printers, no computer is required--simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. The CP-10 produces credit-card-sized prints, and the CP-100 makes 4-by-6-inch prints. Both use continuous-tone technology for results that are indistinguishable from traditional photos. Of course, photos from your camera can also be printed on any home computer system with an inkjet printer, sent off for online processing, or simply enjoyed on your computer screen.
Size
Dimensions of 4.3 by 2.8 by 1.5 inches put the A40 in the middle of the compact-camera pack. The plastic body keeps weight down to 8.8 ounces.
Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the A40 camera, AV and USB cables, wrist strap, printed manual, software suite, four AA batteries, and an 8 MB memory card.
Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but a few well-chosen accessories can help you get even more from your camera. We strongly recommend the addition of a larger memory card (a 128 MB card holds around 200 images), a set of rechargeable batteries, and a carrying case. A broad array of additional accessories are available, including a waterproof housing, an adapter for threaded lenses, and more.
Customer Reviews:
My first and not my last Canon.......2007-08-05
I buy Canon exclusively because of this camera. Have several other newer and better Canon's, but my 5 year old A40 still takes great pictures :). Have taken over 16,000 photos with it over the years. This is a real workhorse of a camera. And as you can use rechargeable AA NIMH batteries with it is a plus. Don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I know 2MP is not very good by today's standards, but really it's all you need for your average 4 x 6 print or for viewing digitally on your monitor/tv. Digital prints come out crisp, clear, with great color and contrast. If you can get a good deal on a used one, grab it!
Still great years later.......2007-07-06
my family bought this camera as our first 'digital' camera. we all couldnt keep our hands off of it. about two years later i got my own smaller more compact power shot. and it worked well till it finally broke after going through some serious poundings from my liking to go to concerts, and it getting kicked by people crowd surfing.
during the time it took me to save up for a new camera. i settled back with this one. taking it to local shows and things like that. i got amazing shots. (i like to leave the flash on and put it in multiple picture mode, and just let it shoot away) and it got the kind of picture i wanted. i got artsie moving pictures, that still seemed like a moment frozen in time, without them being blurry.
as soon as i got my new camera and took it to a show. i realized that it didnt have that cool stop action like the older camera did. when the fash was off.
my very next show i resorted back to this one and i still use this one when i want to do fancy shots. i could do with more MP's , but its ok. i'm still very much in love with this camera. years later. and yes. everyone thinks i'm crazy for lugging around this huge thing. but i dont care. i show them the pictures i took with it, and they shut up instantly.
Great for its time.......2007-04-01
Bought it in 2002, and it's still working great. Of course, 2 MP is a joke by today's standards, but I occasionally use it to make a few quick shots.
I will probably donate it to a local charity.
Great 4X6 prints.......2006-11-04
I've been using the Canon A40 for more than a year (see my posted sample pictures). The first time I printed my photos at their highest resolution (1600 X 1200) I was NOT very impressed due to my cheap HP color printer, but when I took them to the nearest farmacy for a more professional printing I was really impressed with the Kodak Picture Perfect processing and the quality paper.
After using my Canon AE-1 film SLR for more than 15 years I never thought that a little 2MP camera will look this great on 4X6 prints. They really look good as long as you take pictures outdoors.
As expected, in low-light conditions it performs poorly but if you put it on a tripod and use the night-scene setting with flash you can still take great pictures of static or slow-moving subjects.
This is a great quality camera for the price range but considering it's discontinued now, you may want to consider a Canon A410. As for me, I'm replacing my AE-1 with a Rebel XTi.
PowerShot A40 was a good buy & I do not regret it........2006-11-01
I purchased my Canon A40 PowerShot about 3-4 years ago and never had a day trouble with it. I have taken 1000's of photos with it, I use it on the job and off the job, and I realy don't know what some people are talking about the lens giving trouble, maybe they camera fell and that will definetly cause that to happen. My A40 PowerShot was a good buy and it still works VERY GOOD.
The only reason that I will buy a new camera now is to upgrade to something with more pix and more Zoom.
BUY ONE NEW, IF YOU GET IT AT A GOOD PRICE AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. TRY NOT TO BUY A USED ONE.
