Unlike most other cordless phones, VT 1920 digitizes your voice using advanced digital voice coding to provide noise and distortion free performance. This ensures that no one can tune in and eavesdrop on your conversations. VTech VT 1920 features intercom, call waiting function, and compact handset and antenna design. Caller ID presence is provided in LCD panel on handset. VT 1920 has 50 Caller ID memory with date and time, and 20 number speed dial. The phone also provides a Page/Handset Locator. Pressing the base Page key will cause the handset to ring in a manner, which distinguishes it from normal incoming ringing. This can be used to alert the handset user or to simply locate the handset in the event that it is misplaced.

The VTech 1920's 900-MHz frequency offers better range than traditional cordless phones and features digital transmission for enhanced clarity and privacy. Plus, with caller ID/call waiting, you'll know who's calling before you pick up the phone.

To set up the phone, we inserted the battery pack (included), plugged in the AC power, and connected the standard RJ-11 phone cord. You can also insert and charge a second battery pack (not included) in the base unit to either power the base unit during an electric outage or for use as a spare handset battery.

You control the VTech 1920 through 11 buttons on the handset (in addition to the usual 0-9, *, and #). Although setting up and programming the phone is straightforward and intuitive, the instruction manual is useful for reviewing advanced features and caller ID functions. Note that you cannot program the caller ID system with your local area codes. When dialing from caller ID memory, the phone supports only seven-digit automatic dialing; you must supply the area code (and the prefix "1" if necessary).

In our test of the VTech 1920, we placed the base unit in a typical home, where walls, floors, and other obstructions might interfere with signal quality.

We made a variety of local and long-distance calls, and the phone sounded only slightly softer than our reference corded desk phone. We noticed some signal degradation--static and the sound cutting in and out--when we moved the handset about 100 feet from the base. At about 200 feet, the phone activated its auto channel-searching feature. At this distance the phone could not find a clearer channel and became unusable until we returned the handset to the base. This is the tradeoff for the superior clarity of digital transmission--the phone stops working abruptly when the signal weakens beyond a certain point.

With its terrific price, digital 900-MHz transmission quality, call waiting caller ID, and well-chosen set of features, the VTech 1920 makes a great, general purpose cordless phone.

I've had this phone for almost 3 years, and have never had a problem with it. It's very clear and the reception is good, and I am just now replacing the batteries for the first time since I bought it. I would highly recommend this to anyone I know.

I've had this phone for about a year now, and have had no problems. The charge lasts a long time and I can take it throughout my home and yard and hear clearly. The caller ID function is useful when you are busy and not sure if you should pick up the phone.

As another reviewer said, the volume is insufficient, even when turned up to maximum. With the slightest background noise, you will not hear the other party. Would try a Toshiba, but reviewers have had battery problems.

Poor design.......2000-02-09

Don't try mounting this phone on a wall. It's very difficult, with one small tab, to get the phone to stay in its cradle. Also, life of nicad battery will be shortened while phone is in cradle, but there is no viable alternative. Phone has poor tone quality and insufficient volume. Also, the $20 rebate offer really expired a month before delivery and did NOT match sample rebate coupon in promotional information. I am sending this unsatisfactory phone back.

Great Phone.......2000-02-08

The phone works great. It has very good features for the price and its range seems to be pretty good as well, even though it's not a spread spectrum phone. I can use it at my neighbor's house across the street with no cut out or static. As far as the rebate goes, the one that comes in the box with the phone is out Jan 1st 2000, but the rebate on the web page, which Amazon says to view and print, is not out until March 1st 2000

BOSE IS OVERRATED & OVERPROCED.......2007-05-18

BOSE is completely overrated and consistently does not live up to all the hype for their significantly overpriced speakers. I tried these speakers and was so dissappointed they were immediately returned for a much cheaper pair of Pyle's (@ only $84 compared to $279). The BOSE speakers do not even compare to the cheap Pyles that have a much higher Power rating (350watts vs only 100watts), better frequency response(40-20KHZ Vs. 670-20KHz), and even higher sensitivity (94db Vs. 89db).

The specifications for BOSE products are NOT advertised prior to purchase. Geeh. . . I wonder why? The reason is, by doing a direct side-by-side comparison, the BOSE speakers just don't match up & can't hold their ground to a much cheaper speaker since they perform so poorly. After all the advertising and sales gimmicks, the bottom line is that these BOSE speakers cannot even provide the performance of a speaker that is a fraction of the cost. The Bass response was weak & non-existant even for an outdoor speaker and could probably be blown very easily.

Why Pay the outragious costs for an inferior product? BOSE is for the uneducated buyer, who falls for all the sales gimmicks and buys speakers based on their looks alone and completely ignores the performance characteristics.

Spend a little extra and purchase another brand.......2005-10-05

I've used Verbatim refurbished toner cartridges for the last decade with good results but decided to try the Amazon Imaging Inc. toner at 1/2 the price (There is no affiliation with Amazon.com). The first one jammed after 50 good quality prints. It was tested on two other machines with the same results. I had to pay $8.00 for return since they have a policy of not paying for return postage with their RMA. The replacement was worse. It sounded like the gears were grinding. It was also tested on another machine with the same results. Again, I have to pay for return and they will not refund my money (company policy) but offered credit toward their other products. Customer support was helpful but I have little confidence in their product. There is a reason why their products are so inexpensive, lack of quality assurance.

I have used the Cambridge SoundWorks Ensemble IV surround speaker system for over 2 years now. I am extremely satisfied! The system uses 5 small cube speakers that pack a punch. They sound great! The 0.1 component is a non-amplified subwoofer that is the size of a shoebox. I love the power and sound clarity I get from my 5.1 set. This is the best inexpensive way to complete a DVD watching experience. I routinely put in the "gunfight at the bank" scene from *Heat* to show off my system, and believe me, everyone is impressed. The system comes w/ a 10 year warantee, but I have never had a problem w/ my system.

One tip: most surround stereo receivers can adjust the power/output to emphasize the front speakers more than the rears. I highly advise doing that. In fact, Cambridge SoundWorks wants you to do that. Once you do that, you will notice a lot more bass from the subwoofer, as well as louder dialogue from the front speakers.

This system is a consumers best buy! It is easily the best value per dollar that I have ever spend on Audio/visual equipment. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is on a budget and doesn't want to lose out on experiencing 5.1 surround sound or DTS. And it will sound great!

The perfect system for my small living room!.......2002-10-23

I live in an apartment and am very cramped for space. The Ensemble 4 surround sound speakers are the ideal solution for me. They are small and unobtrusive, yet they sound really great! My friends can't believe that all that sound is coming from those little speakers. The woofer hides under an end table and the small speakers are mounted on the wall. I would highly recommend this system to anyone that is looking for big sound from small speakers...oh yeah, and the price absolutely can not be beat- I know, I shopped around!

Although it may look like a compact digital camera, the Canon PowerShot S50 delivers is actually a 5 Megapixel camera with features and options normally only reserved for high-end digital cameras.

Housed in a mostly metal casing, the Canon PowerShot S50 is turned on via a sliding lens protector that in turn allows the 3x optical zoom to pop out and the large and clear 1.5 LCD monitor to fire into action. There are over 10 buttons on the back of the camera alone, allowing you to easily change everything from white balance to reviewing images.

The jog wheel on top gives access to the many options including Night Scene, Fast Shutter, Slow Sync and Program and shows how serious this camera is when it comes to taking pictures. Better still is the quick access function button on the rear of the camera that allows you to access White Balance, Drive Mode, ISO, Effect, Flash and image size settings all at the press of a button.

Power is delivered via a Li-ion Canon rechargeable battery pack and the camera is shipped with a 32Mb CompactFlash Card enabling you to store images. A 3x optical zoom offers 38 - 105mm equivalent for a 35mm camera and this added to the 4x digital zoom gives you plenty of scope. F range is F2.8 - F4.9, and focusing is managed via a whole host of options: 9-point AiAF, 1-point AF (any position), AF lock, Focus bracketing, AF assist beam (on/off) and Manual Focus.

Picture quality, as with all Canon cameras, is very strong, detailed and well balanced. You would expect this from a 5 Megapixel model, but everything here seems to gel. Colors are crisp, white's well defined and skin tones very clear. The host of focusing options only help in creating better pictures. While the pre-programmed settings get you out of trouble if you're not sure what to manually set up.

Overall this is a very good camera that is only let down by the positioning of the review button. The picture quality is very good and the functions that the camera offers are extensive. For this too really be treated as a high end camera it should have a hot shoe function, but then that's what the G3 and new G5 are there for. If you are looking for a good field camera and are at that stage where you want all the functionality of a high camera without the size, then this certainly does the job. --Jason Denwood, Amazon.co.uk

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash memory cards and the memory slot is compatible with CompactFlash Type II cards as well as Microdrives. The included 32 MB card holds approximately 21 images at the Large/Fine setting.

Movie Mode
Shoot up to three minutes of MPEG video with sound, editing controls, and VCR-like playback. The movies aren't camcorder quality, but they're fun and convenient, and they're perfect as e-mail attachments. The camera can also attach voice memos or sound files of up to 60 seconds to each image.

Is this the best camera that Canon can give for more than $400? Like other Canon Powershot S50, mine broke after 3 years. It seems to be innevitible for this model. If you want something last longer than 3 years, go for other brands. No Canon anymore.

I love this camera. I've had it for 8 years and it takes the best shots. I get compliments all the time on my shots and I know nothing about photography, just that I like great shots of faces. I've gotten better shots of ym family with this camera then I get at professional photography places.

The camera does it all. We have tons of videos of our daughters first moments from this camera even though we have a camcorder because it's easier to snap quick pictures and movies with. And we post them on the internet really fast where our camcorder takes much more effort. I've dropped this thing a million times and it sat in water once or twice. The frame is scarred and wounded from my gross mistreatment yet the thing still takes the best pictures ever. The quality of my pictures has never gone down. This was by far the best investment I've ever made. I've never been disappointed by this camera. I love it! The only thing I did was get a huge memory card so I could take more shots while on vacation.

pictures are great, but lens cover design is bad.......2007-03-20

I see I am not the only one who had a problem with the lens cover. When you slide it one way, it turns the camera on and then you slide it back to turn it off. I bought this camera about 3 years ago and several months ago, when I closed the lens cover after snapping some pictures, I felt it go past the stop point it usually did. Then I noticed the lens cover had become loose. It is even looser now and the camera is still working but I have to be very careful with it. I am afraid it is only a matter of time before it stops working thanks to the loose lens cover. Local camera shops send out digital cameras to be repaired and Canon will not even look at it for less than $150 since it is out of warranty. I will eventually buy a new digital camera and then maybe I will take the chance of looking at this thing myself by taking it apart. It could be just some little thing that could be tightened up, but taking it apart could also ruin the camera for all I know.

the powershot s50 will not turn on anymore sinse the siding lens cover wonnt work right and canon wants 139.00 to fix !!! Im never buying a canon camera agine!!!

The S50 was my first foray into digital photography, and after reading reviews online, I bought one 2.5 years ago.

What I liked:
1.) Nonproprietary memory (uses CF cards). Newer Canons use SD cards mostly (I believe).
2.) Flexibility: sized slightly larger than a compact (and quite a bit heaver), but full functioned. I was coming from a 35mm SLR and wanted to have some control over my shots without shelling out a few thousand for a digital SLR (at that time).
3.) Good optics. Don't remember which review I read that tested the optical characteristics of the camera[...] but it was among the best of the time.

What I didn't like:
1.) Bulk: It's a bit heavy and too bulky for a pocket.
2.) Proprietary battery. Life is decent, however. I can usually get a full day's shooting on one battery. I have a backup "just in case" that I have only had to use on really heavy shooting days (over 150 shots or so).

It's survived a number of trips with me around the world and I love the thing. It got me into digital photography and I'm back in the market for another (probably) Canon compact for my wife. Eventually, I'll dive into a digital SLR....

5/5 to Canon!
