Beautiful printing, scanner didn't work.......2007-07-05
I had to return this printer due to the scanner not working since an error message said it couldn't communicate with the PC. Canon's online tech notes, and e-mail support (4 rounds), and a 45-minute phone call did not help. They just had me try different USB ports, uninstall and reinstall the software, and were wary of my 6' USB 2.0 cable, telling me that I needed a 4' gold-plated cable instead. I've never had a USB problem before with any other product.
They finally sent me a replacement (an upgraded unit, the MP180), but it exhibited the same problem. Both were reburbished units, but I think the Canon drivers have a problem.
I finally bought the Lexmark 2500 and it works fine.
The MP160 prints beautifully, however.
The Amazon distributor who sold me the original MP160 was very good to work with.

I bought this item on Amazon refurbished in Dec 2006 and saved a bunch of money (it cost me about one third of the current going rate).
SCANNING
It replaced an old flatbed scanner. The Canon scans great; very fast. The software is easy to use, and allows you to set various features for the kind of doc you're scannig. I scan my doc's to PDF files. Although you have to feed one sheet at a time, it scans fast, so it keeps things moving. For home use, it's great. And you can save the scanned images as individual PDFs, or multiple pages as one PDF, or add pages to a PDF later. Very nice.
COPYING
It copies very well too. Although I don't use it much for copying, it does come in handy every now and then. I really like how I can control the copy quality, which means that I can save on cartridge costs. The software controls are very easy, as are the unit controls.
PRINTING
It works great as a printer too. Although I try to keep most of my doc's electronic, so I don't print too much.
DIGITAL CAMERAS
There is a front USB that you can use to plug-in your camera to print photos. Great feature, if you like to print photos
SUMMARY
I am very happy with the MP170. I paid a great price and got a great product. It does not come with a USB, but no big deal; I had a webcam cable that I wasn't using, so I didn't have to buy one. The USB end that plugs into the PC is the regular plug, but the plug that connects to the back of the printer is square shaped. I highly recommend this printer for home users. Enjoy!
Beats HP .......2006-10-23
I was a low-end HP inkjet customer, for several printers. My last HP had mechanical issues after only a couple years of infrequent use. I nursed it along and when it fianlly gave out I went looking for something else. The MP-170 has exceeded all expectations; ease of use, utilities, and speed. The scanner has proven more useful than I thought it would. I've had this about a year, it's been great.
Good in many ways but also disappointing picture printing.......2006-09-28
I switched from an Epson when it stopped printing color properly, and I wanted a multi function inkjet for home use. Although I have liked my previous 2 Epsons, I decided against Epson because of a ribbon problem that occurs in various models (which happened to my husband's machine.) I also decided against HP because many consumer reviews mentioned paper jamming. Canon has very good reviews with Consumer Reports and on Amazon, and the price is very good.
I liked the size, the price, the multifunction and the easy to use interface (software and hardware) of the 170. However when I printed color and especially color photos, I was very disappointed. The edges of the image are very blurry as though the ink runs. I thought it was my digital image, but I tried printing the image using my husband's Epson C82, and it was night and day. The Epson image was nice and sharp with absolutely no problem. I am glad I didn't waste much time digitally fixing the image.
I print a lot of photos around Xmas time. I really cannot use this printer to print photos at all.
I have been usually very happy with all Canon products I own (2 excellent cameras and 1 scanner.)Perhaps the 4xx or 8xx models are better (based on Consumer Report), but they have a larger footprint than my desk can take.

Easy to use and good printing quality.......2006-03-20
We've had this printer for about two months and are very happy with it. The printing quality is excellent. It scans beautifully, easily and fairly quickly. Photocopying (especially color) is a bit on the slow side, but definitely tolerable, and the quality is better than on a regular photocopying machine. Plus, the computer doesn't need to be on to utilize the photocopying function.
The best thing about this printer is its ink costs. My personal philosophy about printers is that ink costs come before anything else. Otherwise, you end up spending way more on ink than on the printer itself. No matter how great a printer is, I will not buy it if ink prices aren't reasonable. Well, the ink this printer uses is extremely cheap (just compare it to Lexmark or HP ink), especially if you buy generic inks as I do. (BTW, my philosophy on generic inks is the same as on ink costs - even if it's true that they eventually ruin the printer, the money I save using them is far more than the price of a new printer. You make your own calculations depending on your printing needs and habits.)
In short, it's nice to have a dependable all-in-one machine that does the job efficiently and without fuss. I have a friend whom I recommended this printer to, and she is also very happy with it. In general, I have had good experiences with Canon in the past, and plan to stick with them so long as they continue to produce high-quality printers and their inks remain more affordable than that of their competition.

Exactly what I wanted and expected.......2007-09-19
I had a pair of Bose 101 speakers outside for almost 10 years mounted on the deck, they performed perfectly, unfortunately being outside through Rain, Snow and summer heat took its toll and they were DOA in the spring. I wanted another pair of equally good sounding speakers to replace them and have been a Bose fan for a number of years. My expectations were set by the previous pair, and knowing the the open landcape of a deck is an acoustic challenge for any speaker. I ordered the Bose 251 speakers expecting the same or better sound quality and an easier mount/removal, as I will probably pull these in for the winter months. The 251's are perfect. The sound is crisp and even in an open landscape there is sufficient bass to my ears. I like the hand tightened method for securing the speakers to the deck mounted brackets, which will make removal and remounting a snap. All in all I'n very satisfied with this product, its a winner.
great speakers.......2004-06-04
got these a couple of weeks ago from the bose store. they installed super easily, brackets sturdy and easy to place. the sound is phenomenal. very crisp with adequate bass, best appreciated at higher volumes than you may want inside but very good @ any volume. didn't feel like the cost was too prohibitive in comparison to other outdoor speakers, the sound is just that good. also looked @ bose 151's and although they sounded pretty good, there was no comparison to the 251's. highly recommend these if you barbecue a bunch, are in the yard a lot, or entertain outdoors often. we no longer have to blast our indoor klipsch speakers while gardening outdoors.

I have been happy with the ATR97 for years. It captures voice very well. It is compact, and unobtrusive.
The one weakness is that there is no light to indicate that the unit is on, therefore it is possible to leave the unit on without knowing it, and run the battery down. And then there's no way to know if your battery is run-down except by the terrible or non-existent recordings that result.
But, overall it is a stylish boundary microphone. I also like it because it resembles a UFO, or more accurately our domestic military industrial complex's "ARV - Alien Reproduction Vehicle." Enjoy!
Radio Shack's microphone is better ..........2005-09-04
I was hoping to save a few $$$ by buying this microphone, but now regret my decision. If you want a very good quality omni-directional microphone, I suggest you look into Radio Shack's product.
Good, but no Directions.......2004-01-16
This seems like a very good microphone, but there were NO directions in the box! NO website on the box, NO phone number on the box. A google search brings up the website for Audio-Technica, but why should a customer have to go through that to find out who they are???? There are a few sketchy directions on the box.....Only complaint so far: when you put in the battery and try to replace the little plastic lid over it, it is hard - maybe impossible - to get the lid to close securely (may have to tape it over the battery) I played with it for an hour.....So they need a better-fitting, easier-to-replace lid over the battery compartment......Otherwise, I would recommend this.
Great Microphone.......2003-07-26
This microphone is uniquely designed and lays flat on your desk. It doesn't have to be near your mouth to pick up the sound clearly. Unlike other microphones, especially the kinds with stands and a stick, this microphone does not get knocked over, turned away, or have to be adjusted. I use this microphone to have voice conferences while playing games like Planetside. So far, this is the best microphone I've ever had!
