THE Point & Shoot Camera.......2000-08-13

How many times have you had a kodak moment while your Carl Zeiss'ed Contax is stowed away in the dehumidified lexan box up on the top shelf of your closet? Get a handy point & shoot? But which one? The answer is the Canon Sure Shot Owl (or Prima AF-8 as its known in my neck of the woods). Biggest reason going for it is the SLR sized viewfinder. No squinting down lil' itty-bitty eyeholes.Then there's the AF on a fixed lens. No zoom. A definite plus to save indecision and lens twiddling. Also it comes with 35mm fixed. The desert island lens for most photogs. Lastly quality optics from not the makers of baby bottles at a price which you don't mind if you left the camera at the beach. I love mine.

I find it pretty strange that no-one has bought or reviewed this camera. Well as the sole purchaser of the camera, I thought that it was pretty decent buy, though maybe it might be too expensive. This camera has all the basics, excluding a zoom function.

It takes standard film,

has auto-focus, auto advance and rewind,

A self-timer

Date printing

Red-eye reduction

The larger and easier to use viewfinder

and a neat little dial which gives the option of manually choosing to turn the flash on or letting that process be automatic.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this buy, though I have to admit, if it had a zoom function, I would have been extremely pleased, but as I'm no photo expert, this camera works for me!

Great for people with vision problems.......2000-08-12

While I tend to prefer the Elph line myself, this camera fills a niche that's often overlooked. Anyone who's tried to look through a camera viewfinder and had to squint, or just gave up and tried to aim it looking over the top will appreciate this camera. The viewfinder is huge, and the camera is easy to use. I think both kids and the older population would appreciate this feature. Sadly, it doesn't use APS film, which comes in an easy-load canister and would be better for people with vision difficulties or arthritis, but I guess the people at the camera store could reload it for them when they brought in the roll to have it developed. All in all, a great product for a specific market.

I bought the model which also has date printing(but is about $10 more). This camera is pretty decent, but I think that it is a bit expensive considering there is no zoom, or date printing. I definitely recommend Sureshot Owl Date camera model. Keep in mind that this camera is for the most basic of camera users. The larger viewfinder is definitely a neat idea. Canon Sure Shot Owl PF Date.......2002-12-04

Purchased the camera at Sears on sale for [money]. Having read other people's reviews of this camera and other cameras that I own, I must be lucky or else I know what I'm doing. I've taken close up and landscape shots outdoors and I am very impressed with the sharpness of the 35mm/f3.8 all-glass lens on the OWL PF. I've had other cameras that cost more but the picture was not as sharp. I just do not have a problem with out-of-focus pictures. I think people stand too close to the subject they are photographing, hence a blurred picture and a washout from the flash. I use Fujifilm Superia 400, which I like because it has fine grain for 400 speed film. However, I have used the flash to a certain degree, I took a picture of some objects as well as people indoors at close range, 3-4 feet away and the flash did NOT wash out the picture. It has a simple autofocus system in it and I have found that it works just fine. I don't know how much abuse it would take, but for a "bang around" point and shoot camera I think this is worth the money. I particularly like the large viewfinder. I wear glasses at times and have no trouble taking pictures with this camera. Also, it has midroll rewind which is nice because I'm not one to "finish out a roll."

Strengths:

Weaknesses:
-- Only accepts ISO 100, 200, 400 film.

Do not get this camera!

I have been a loyal canon fan for a long time. I bought this camera to replace my previous SureShot that had been reliable for ten years. My hopes were high, but I had this camera for only three months before it broke. During the three months it was working, I was disappointed over and over by the SUPER OWL flash which was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bright it completely washed out my pictures. The auto focus was unreliable. And now the camera has stopped working altogether: it complains that it needs new battery, but does not respond to replacement batteries.

The quality of this camera fell far below my expectations.
I would warn anyone away from buying it =(

Good for Wildlife Photography.......2001-09-05

These cameras are really good for nighttime wildlife photography, if you can solder in a connection to a motion detector. They are quite useful for this purpose.

Great Buy!.......2005-04-18

I was so afraid to buy this item for I had bought a ATI All in wonder 9200 earlier and it wasnt working due to lack of drivers on their end. I would call ATI and they could not give me appropriate drivers for my typical Windows XP computer. They said that everyone seems to have the problems I do. I tried reinstalling that program like 4 times and never got it to work, so i returned the item and for some reason decided to try again. I went with this product.
I have to admit this product seems so nice after the ATI. It installed so easily and is very easy to use. The software it came with is just right for recording programs and to copy a VHS to your computer. The ATI I got had too many programs included for I only used one, which didnt work. The picture quality is better than on my tv, so I can move the TV to another room now. My video card is 32mb, and I was afraid it wasnt sufficent to play TV but it was more than enough, Im sure it could run even on a 8mb video card. Anyway, I bought the product because of the good reviews on here and on many other sites.
I highly recomend this product to anyone who wants to watch tv; copy dvds, VHS, or other media; and to record tv onto your computer, CD, or dvd (if you have a DVD burner). It is so easy to use and the remote works fine.

No hassle installation.......2005-03-04

I popped one of these in a Windows 98 computer tonight. Worked great the first time. In just a couple of minutes I had programmed my favorite FM radio stations into the card. I found it simple to create a schedule for recording different FM stations. I also was using it to capture video stills off a video camera. Nice how it automatically numbers the stills! Also I was amazed at the power of the remote control. Very reliable and stable.

This is a great little product. I looked at Pinnacle and Dazzle products but got frightened by so many bad reviews. I got this to capture video after hearing great things about Avermedia. It installed easily and I had it working fine when I hooked up my VCR and cable. The quality was great. I have no problems with audio syncing. There is one thing about quality though. I use the card on an older computer with only a 500 mhz processor and I can only capture at a medium resolution. When I do, the quality is fine. But to capture at the highest resolutions, make sure you have a faster processor and maybe some memory to move around with or it will drop too many frames all the time. As for the tv tuner part, it works great. No resolution problems with watching.

I am very happy with UltraTV. The TV picture is much better than I expected, video capture is simple, and the ability to record radio programs is a nice little bonus. I expected setup to be much harder, especially for a recovering computer illiterate like me who's only had their computer for a few months. But it was fairly straightforward, as long as you follow the directions closely. People with more experience then me would probably find it even easier.
