1 out of 5 stars Customer Care doesn't care........2007-05-19

I never had the opportunity to discover if this is a quality product - it failed the second time I used it. That could happen with anyone's product so I contacted JVC's local repair organization and took the machine to them on February 16th. Today is May 18th and I still have no repaired machine or replacement. I contacted JVC's "Customer Care" unit on numerous occasions with no results. Several times they said they would get back to me "tomorrow" and never returned the call. I still have hopes but you can be sure I will never purchase a JVC product again. I hope this doesn't happen to you.

1 out of 5 stars The case of the missing JVC.......2007-05-13

Never got this item. After ordering, the supplier called to say they didn't have any and didn't think any would be available soon; just as well, other reviews I've read about this item since ordering it were not very favorable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Item.......2007-04-24

I am very pleased with my purchase. It is very easy to use. I have copied vhs to dvd and found it very simple. I read a lot of reviews before deciding to purchase this model and I am very happy with it. I think it was a great buy.

1 out of 5 stars Not compatible with Sony TV.......2007-04-06

The unit appears to work fine. However, the Remote Control is not compatible with my Sony KV-20FS12. I called JVC tech support and was told that they was no way to program/reprogram the remote beyond the A,B,C,D codes and non of those work with the Sony. There is nothing in the literature about this problem. Buyer Beware.

5 out of 5 stars JVC DR-MV7SU.......2007-04-01

Excellent machine records flawlessly VHS to DVD.I have recorded movies via DVD from directv with professional quality;also VHS recordings of shows that I want to watch via timer when I am away in SLP mode are clearer than my old vhs recorder.Up conversion is a huge plus- Great Buy!!

Product Description

The JVC line of DVD/VCR combination units features a new deck that delivers convenience, quality and affordability. The JVC HR-XVC28B is a new entry-level combo that offers outstanding performance combined with convenience features that make operation quick and easy. Two key features make the new combo easy to use. With JVC's Auto Select feature all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc - it's that simple, and works with both the RF and video outputs. And a new feature this year is one-touch replay, which at the touch of a button on the slim, redesigned remote replays the last 10 seconds of DVD or seven seconds of VCR programming - ideal for those situations when a bit of dialog was missed or that funny moment needs to be replayed immediately. The HR-XVC28B offers playback of DVD Video, CD Audio, CD-R/RW, JPEG (CD-R/RW), Video CD/SVCD and DVD-R/-RW (video format). Other DVD features include a high performance one-chip AV decoder featuring adaptive geometrical chroma mapping, coaxial PCM audio output, 5.1-channel Dolby Digital/DTS digital output, component video output, multi-session CD playback, 10 bit/54MHz video digital-to-analog converter (DAC), 192kHz/24 bit audio DAC, and Express Play Start that initiates program play about five seconds after the tray is closed. Other features offered by the HR-XVC28B include S-VHS Quasi-Playback (SQPB) and a multi-language color on-screen display.

Amazon.com Product Description

Why fuss with multiple hookups? JVC's HR-XVC28B combination DVD player and VCR lets you enjoy cutting-edge DVDs alongside your existing library of videocassettes--and you won't have to continually switch inputs on your TV whenever you switch viewing formats from the combo unit. The HR-XVC28B provides a DVD and a VHS signal through both its composite-video (yellow RCA) and standard RF video outputs. You'll also enjoy MP3 music, JPEG image CD, and video-mode DVD-RW and DVD-R media playback, as well as hi-fi VHS performance. And, you can tape something while you're watching a DVD--get the rental back on time without having to miss your favorite TV show.

With JVC's Auto Select feature, all that's required to begin DVD or VHS playback is to insert a cassette or disc. That's it--the component will begin playback of whichever format it senses. And, at the touch of a button on the unit's slim, newly designed remote control, the HR-XVC28B will replay either the last 10 seconds of a DVD or the last 7 seconds of a videocassette.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HR-XVC28B stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs via JVC's Direct Digital Progressive Scan feature. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Shared (DVD/VCR) composite-video and RF outputs--in addition to DVD-only S-video outputs--together accommodate all standard (non-HD) TVs.

Exclusive VCR features include 1-month, 8-event programming, index search, auto clock setting, and auto tracking. The unit offers an RF input for cable-box signals. S-VHS quasi playback lets you watch, in regular VHS resolution, tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. A set of front-panel audio/video inputs accommodates a camcorder or gaming console.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals for DVD can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (RCA coaxial) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, a multi-brand, full-function remote control, remote batteries, a composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, a user's manual, and warranty information.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Instructions, Great Product!!!!!.......2007-03-01

The player looks different then the picture shows, and the remote is HUGE. The instructions are hard to read. The product itself is great though, It is easy to use and playes everything great. I would buy this product. Another thing is it burns DVD to VHS very good, records TV programs great too.I have hadItfor 8 months and have had no trouble with it freezing. This is the product to get!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!.......2005-11-18

I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now. Now they've added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)

They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.

DVD freezing has happens on ALL THREE of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.

Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest there's not a chance JVC will make good on them.

I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesn't place much value on their brand or image or they wouldn't have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy Machine.......2006-11-28

I had the same problems as the first reviewer with my Jvc Hi-fi Vcr/DVD Combo. The DVDs started freezing up on the machine after just a few months use. I gave up and decided to buy a separate DVD player. I am still using the VCR to play videos but the recording and receiving quality is so bad it is just good for playback. Anything you attempt to record with the VCR is just second rate quality and using the time recording function is just to frustrating. Why bother --- the video quality is just not worth the hassel. I am current looking to replace the system with something better.

Product Description

Looking for a replacement VCR? Want a new DVD player? The HR-XVC33 provides the logical choice for people who want both. Enjoy a variety of media. Watch a DVD while recording a TV program on tape. Even dub DVD to VCR. With the HR-XVC33, it's not only possible, it's easy as JVC.

Amazon.com Product Description

Set yourself up to enjoy just about any current media format with JVC's versatile HR-XVC33U combination DVD player and VCR. With MP3/WMA and JPEG image CD playback and hi-fi VHS performance, the unit is built to satisfy your music and home-theater needs. The progressive-scan HR-XVC33U plays not only DVD and multiple CD formats, but DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, and SVCD as well.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the HR-XVC33U stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Top-of-the-line component-video outputs help minimize digital and line-scan artifacts on compatible advanced televisions, while composite-video, S-video, and RF (coaxial) outputs ensure compatibility with any television.

With S-VHS quasi playback, you'll be able to watch (in regular VHS resolution) tapes recorded in Super-VHS, normally only compatible with more expensive S-VHS machines. Advanced programming can be set for one month and eight events, and Commercial Skip search quickly skims over 30-second increments during playback to put your program back in front of you more quickly.

Pro-cision 19 micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode. Auto Repeat (VHS: unlimited) and repeat playback (DVD: A-B) makes this unit a perfect choice for trade shows and conventions. Other VCR features include child lock (prevents unintended viewings), index search, skip search, auto clock setting, auto timer setting, and auto tracking.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs (one for each component) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. A front-panel set of audio/video inputs simplifies hookup with camcorders, gaming consoles, and other devices.

What's in the Box
DVD/VCR combo unit, composite-video/stereo analog-audio interconnect, instruction manual, batteries, warranty info, and multibrand, full-function remote control that operates the combo player and most televisions.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD Picture Quality.......2005-04-10

I have owned this unit for about 15 months now. I bought it as a bedroom unit. I wanted a good DVD player and a VHS to transfer TiVo content onto tape. I was especially interested in getting a high-quality DVD as I have a high-end Panasonic 20" LCD TV in the bedroom. I am very happy with the picture quality of the DVD player to say the least. I watch 4-5 movies per week due to a large DVD collection and NetFlix. In fact, I do the majority of my DVD viewing in the bedroon, not my main LR HT setup. I watched "The Incredibles" on this player a few nights ago and it looked stunning. I appreciate the front AV connections to connect my TiVO to the unit to transfer recordings onto tape. I have had no mechanical problems with this player in all the time I've owned it. The remote is good, there is a good setup\adjustment menu. It gives me everything I want and I get it for a very inexpensive price!

4 out of 5 stars Good performance for me.......2004-03-24

I haven't yet had a problem with the DVD player on this unit. The VCR seems to work OK too, and I figured out how to program timer recording easily. A cool feature is that it reads your tape and tells you how much time you have left on it to record when you aren't sure if you have room for a program. The only real drawback I had was the hookup instructions. They were needlessly complicated and could have been written a lot simpler than they were. Once I figured out what I needed to do, hookup was a breeze. But the reading the directions made it harder, not easier.

1 out of 5 stars Returned Item.......2004-03-17

I purchased this DVD/VCR combo just two weeks ago and already the VCR section of the player does not work. Electronics are just not what they used to be. Returned the item and would not recommend to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Not too impressed.......2004-03-12

Because of a good price on-line, I bought this unit to replace a separate Panasonic DVD player and a Samsung VCR. I have been disappointed in the performance of the DVD player, which seems inferior to my entry-level progressive scan Panasonic. The player is also much fussier about which disks it will play. In addition, the remote is very difficult to navigate in the relatively dim environs of my home theater. I have since returned the Panasonic to home theater use and will use the JVC combo in the bedroom.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Video Output.......2007-08-16

This unit produces some of the best video I've seen from a VCR. My main reason for getting two of these units was to transfer old home recorded VHS/SVHS tapes to DVD. Copying old VHS tapes to DVD-R's has produced excellent results, even from those tapes recorded in EP mode over 15 years ago. I did have a problem with one of the two units I own (on the DVD side), but Amazon took care of the issue. My main nitpick is just that the DVD recorder requires DVD-R/-RW discs, and is unable to use DVD+R discs.

JVC SR-MV40US DVD-R & S-VHS/VHS Dual Playback Recorder

2 out of 5 stars Lots of potential . . . ultimately doesn't deliver.......2007-08-05

The Potential
1. Great input/output options (svhs, rca,firewire . . .).
2. DVD recording from whatever source the unit can take.

The Let Down
1. Cumbersome procedures for VHS => DVD recordings.
2. Fussy firewire input.
4. Disk Error on most discs after 5 months of owning the unit.
5. HORRENDOUS customer service/support.

1 out of 5 stars no luck with this.......2007-06-27

received this machine and found it did not copy vhs tapes without pixelizing, i sent it back and asked for a replacement. the second one came while i was away, i had someone send me a picture of the box..it looked like someone played football with it. i sent it back...was told there has been a problem with this model and shipment would be stopped and looked into...

5 out of 5 stars My favorite video component.......2007-05-17

This vhs/dvd recorder is far more than most users need. It is packed with features that most folks won't use but if you do need them, you'll be impressed. The video quality playing normal vhs tapes is outstanding. I can't wait to put all my vhs tapes of my kids on dvd's. This is an excellent addition to anyone's home entertainment equipment. Amazon's price was also far better than any competitor.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for archiving old videos.......2007-05-16

This unit excels when it comes to copying old vcr tapes especially SVHS types. We had a tape that the edge of the magnetic tape had become stretched and wavy when closely examined. It actually was so bad that the tape would not play in the equipment that recorded it. This unit copied the tape perfectly with the exception that the audio was muffled, but that is where the audio is stored...on the tape edge. I was very impressed with its abilities. The only thing I wish JVC would have done, was to add the ability to create icons at the beginning of the DVD for different chapters on the disc. Other units do this. Otherwise I rate this unit excellent.

4 out of 5 stars It serves its purpose well.......2007-07-31

I don't love it, but I do like this recorder. I think if you bear in mind the purpose of a combination DVD/VCR, it's close to as good as one can expect.

I bought the combo recorder because there are times I still need VCR recordings from TV signal, and don't want to pollute my AV system with set-top boxes and added connections that degrade signals. The ATSC/QAM tuner solved that issue. While there's no way to make a VHS tape look great, at least I am now recording digital broadcsts and maximizing the benefit with upconversion (to Samsung LN-T4661F). There clearly is a significant improvement. Original VHS recordings are noticeably better. I think upscaling is best when I set the recorder's output to 720p and let my TV upscale from there. I'm not sure if it's because of the JVC's upscaling, or if it's a basic limitation of the unit, which simply isn't meant to be 'high end'. Live HDTV viewed via the JVC tuner isn't quite on a par with HDTV viewed directly through my TV tuner. It's good; it's close; but not quite as sharp for HD broadcasts. DVD recordings of HD broadcasts are also a bit less crisp than the live, but it's not an HD recorder. Store-bought DVDs look great.

It's user-freindly - simple, intuitive menus; options to make the most of a combo recorder. Other than changing the output (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i), everything is accessible from the remote. You can watch a disc while recording to the VCR, and vice versa. Timer recording and labeling is a breeze. There is no EPG, but I have no problem with that. More and more recorders are eliminating it due to compatibility issues with various cable and satellite services. Discs, tapes and TV can be output at 4:3 or 16:9. DVDs can be formatted for VR or DVD-Video. It has all the choices of both analog and digital inputs and outputs needed to connect to any home theater system, old or new.

On the downside, it doesn't record to DL discs. This isn't an issue for me; I will leave that to my computer when needed. Also, there is no code currently available for universal remotes. According to JVC, all the manufacturers update and share their new codes annually, so in theory there will be a code available shortly after January '08. I hope so.

    3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2007-06-27

When I purchased this JVC combo DVD/VHS recorder it was a very new product, there were no reviews available on the web, the manufacturer's info was a little ambiguous, and a call to JVC customer support to ask a few questions turned out to be a waste because the support people knew nothing about it and actually put me on hold while they rummaged up a manual to read to me over the phone. Some of the info they gave me turned out to be wrong, as I found out after I purchased the unit. Hopefully I can help some folks out with what I have learned.

I've been upgrading all of my TV and related equipment. Among other toys, I recently got a Pioneer Elite PRO-1140HD 50" plasma (awesome) and the latest and greatest Toshiba HD-XA2 DVD player (also awesome). After seeing what the Toshiba XA2 did for my old DVDs (it upscales them so amazingly to HD you think you are watching the real thing) I longed for a similar product for my old VHS tapes (I have hundreds, many of which are out of print). All of the upscaling VHS/DVD combos (you pretty much have to get a combo now days to get a VCR) only upscale the DVD and not the VHS. In fact, most require two connections to the TV: one for the upscaled DVD digital image and one for the analogue SD VHS signal.

This JVC unit actually upscales both the DVD and VHS signals. In the process it converts the VHS signal to digital and, if you have an HDMI cable, it will output both signals in digital format to your TV via the HDMI cable. You can choose to output in 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. That's the good news. If you do not use an HDMI cable you can still output both signals on the same connection to your TV via coax, s-video, component video, or RCA plugs. So far so good.

OK, here's the bad news: the VHS upscaling was useless, and the DVD upscaling was not a whole lot better.

I got by far the best VHS picture by sending 480p to the TV set and letting the Pioneer plasma upscale the picture itself. When I set the JVC to output 720p or 1080i the picture quality actually degraded in every case. On even my best VHS tapes I also got a horizontal silver line dancing on the top or bottom of my TV. Some of my crummier tapes that always displayed the silver line had the silver line turn into about a one inch silver noise bar. Ugh! Also, any noise on the VHS tapes seemed to be blown up by the letting the JVC upscale the image. For every tape I tried (and I tried quite a few) I got the best image every time by sending 480p to the TV. If your TV does not upscale on its own there might be a trade-off in your case where you might, say, get a better image with 720p (i.e. the improvement in resolution might outweigh the artifacts created or noise blowing up). I would be skeptical, however.

I did a side by side comparison with the same VHS tape on this JVC unit at 480p and my old Sony VHS unit. I had to swap the tape back and forth a few times before I could call a winner. This JVC unit produced a SLIGHTLY better picture, but I have a suspicion this is because the JVC was connected to my TV via a 25' HDMI cable whereas my Sony was connected with 25' double shielded gold-plated RCA cables, which although top quality for RCA cables, still results in some signal loss from the Sony.

So, the VHS side of the unit was largely a disappointment.

As expected the DVD upscaling was better. When I first started testing my old DVDs in the unit I was fairly impressed. They did not display quite as nice as with the Toshiba HD-XA2 (no surprise there as the Toshiba HD-XA2 is generally regarded as the best upscaler on the planet). Then I noticed that the JVC unit was still outputting at 480p. So I bumped that up to 1080i expecting to see some really nice stuff. I was amazed to see very little, if any, improvement. Once again the TV upscaled the image just as good or better than the JVC in most cases. The Toshiba HD-XA2 upscaling was clearly superior.

Of course the Toshiba HD-XA2 is just a player and not a recorder, but given the miniscule value of the JVC's other features, I think I would have been just about as well off by keeping my old Sony VHS and getting an HD DVD recorder at my local Sam's Club or wherever.

I may be missing something, but every time I power the unit on, whether I play a DVD or a VHS tape the unit goes back to 480p output. I have read the manual from start to finish and I see no way to permanently set the output format (if anyone discovers how please post). Furthermore, the remote has no button for this function either. So, every time I play something, if I want to change the output format I have to get up and walk to the unit and press the output status button (which as I have already mentioned for VHS tapes, is NOT desired).

In summary, it was a really cool concept to upscale both the VHS and DVD signals and be able to transmit both digitally via HDMI to a TV. In practice, however, it turned out to be an expensive, marginally useful device. I don't feel it was worth the high cost. If you really want this functionality you may want to wait awhile for the price to plummet. I think this will happen as people realize the limitations of this device and competition creeps in.

3 out of 5 stars After the ATSC/NTSC tuner, it is not much of a Recorder for a JVC system........2007-05-17

I bought this item because I wanted to have an ATSC/NTSC tuner and it has both a VHS and DVD recorders. After that, it lacks alot. Because I have a JVC system and this is such a new product, I assumed that it would have a compulink cable, so I could control it with my system. It does not, this dropped my rating 1 star. The other problem is that all the connections are very loose, so if you move the DVD player, your optical cable will come out and your electrical cable will come out. This dropped my rating another star. It does have an HDMI cable which is what I want for my Panasonic Plasma TV and this is nice. But the IR Blaster cable I have from my Panasonic, does not have a code for the JVC DVD Recorder that works. When I called Panasonic, they said if it is not in their list of codes, they do not have it. This is frustrating me with Panasonic for not having a way to update their TV, but I will check with JVC to find out what the code should be. This allows me to run the TV guide from my Plasma TV so it will turn on the DVD or VCR Recorder. Fortunately, I can just have the VCR or DVD record by using the Timer function. It would be easier with my TV Guide.

One last hing that is just slightly irritating. When you go through the channels, it first goes through your ATSC channels, then through your NTSC channels. Unlike my Plasma TV that can go through them in order. So on the Panasonic, I go to 4-1, 6-1, 10-1, 28-1, 51-0, 51-1, 53-0, 53-1. On the JVC, I go to 4-1, 61-, 10-1, 28-1, 51-1, 53-1, 51-0, 53-0. I just have to get used to it.

    1 out of 5 stars Can't connect to cable.......2007-08-27

I was suprised that there is no way to connect directly to the TV cable and I had to buy an RF converter from Radio Shack. I think I should have been warned, especially since I bought this model because I thought I wouldn't need a cable box. I got it to go through setup but still no picture when the VCR/DVR is on.

I finally was able to speak to JVC consumer assistance which told me that I cannot record anything unless it's on the TV. I am going to try to return this and buy a more traditional model.
