Digisette's Duo-MP3 portable MP3 player, designed also to be usable with conventional cassette players, comes close to being an excellent digital convergence product, but its limited memory capacity and high price really hurt its overall value.

Although the MP3-Duo is shaped like a standard audiocassette tape, that doesn't mean it looks bad. The sleek bare aluminum housing with black accents is attractive and adds a measure of ruggedness to the device that plastic can't match. A compartment for the included rechargeable battery is on top, along with a small power switch. There's a headphone jack on the side for listening to the Duo-MP3 without a cassette player, plus a narrow port for the interface cable that links the device to your PC via the parallel port. An included CD-ROM contains software that let us easily send MP3 files from our computer to the Duo-MP3. A typical MP3 file is about 3 to 4 MB, and it took an average of 50 seconds for the parallel port interface to transmit that much data to the unit.

The controls located on the face of the Duo-MP3 are very disappointing. Two buttons are used to raise and lower the volume, another button is used to stop tracks, and a fourth button is used to play tracks. The play button can also be pressed while you are listening to a song to select one of four preset equalizer settings, although two of the presets made all of the music we listened to sound muddy. Selecting tracks requires the use of two hands, as they require holding down one of the volume buttons and pressing play. It's an annoying setup, and there is no LCD display on the front of the device to let you know which track is playing--an unforgivable omission on a portable MP3 player.

Fortunately the sound quality is good--as long as you are listening with a better set of headphones than the tinny-sounding earbuds Digisette supplies. Listening to high-quality MP3s in our car via the cassette player sounded virtually indistinguishable from listening to the same tracks on CD, although there was some hiss that is unavoidable where tape heads are involved. It is very easy to use the MP3-Duo in a cassette tape player. We just turned it on, popped it into our tape deck, and accessed tracks by pressing fast-forward and rewind on the cassette player. The included rechargeable battery pack will keep the unit powered for up to six hours.

Considering the high price of this player one would expect to get a lot of memory, but sadly this isn't the case. The built-in 32 MB holds little more than a half hour of audio, and upgrading (via a 32 MB or 64 MB MultiMediaCard) is expensive. For the money it is possible to get a much more full-featured portable MP3 player with an LCD display, extra memory, better controls, and a car kit with a cassette player adapter. --T. Byrl Baker

My fiance bought me this last xmas from R. Envelope and he paid $100 for it!
It won't work with XP and they would not accept it back.
It also requires an additional memory card.
Smart Idea this digicasette, but it was not followed through with. I wish i got the chance to use it.

Corrupted memory when running on Win XP.......2002-10-12

Don't buy this product! It was running OK on Windows 2000,
but when I downloaded and used their Win XP software on my
new XP box, their software corrupted my Digisette's memory!
Now I can't use the Digisette at all!!!!! Some problems
are OK when moving from one OS to another, but it shouldn't
ruin the product!!!

Digisette will not back the product!! I purchased the DUO-ARIA 14 months ago and it stopped working. It has a one year warranty - after that your out of luck. I called and asked how I could get it serviced and they told me they will not service any DUO product. Basically, you're on your own - I didn't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did..........

Good player, but might not be all you expect.......2002-04-27

This is the older version of the player - it runs on a parallel port connection, which is slow, slow, slow. Also, if you're looking for an Audible.com ready device, this one won't work. You need to buy the newer USB models. Still, it's a solid player, and you can find this one for under [price] on certain auction sites, and you can't beat the ability to stick it in your tape deck.

Windows 2000 Problems.......2001-06-02

This product will NOT run with Windows 2000. If you are running Win 2K and want to buy this, make sure you get the USB version. The Parallel vesion will not work.

Fog on the inside.......2007-08-27

Shortly after purchasing the unit, I discovered something that looks like fog on the inside of the glass on the top fourth or so. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to affect image quality.

I checked again tonight for this review and I don't see any (this is a first) so it must be related to the weather. It was there yesterday.

Big Time Failure.......2005-06-09

Don't buy this scanner. I'm a light user, and this scanner failed after 18 months. The software was okay, the hardware quit working after the warranty expired, and the scanner unit needs to be replaced by a repair center. It's so costly, the repair is not worth it. Do yourself a favor and go with another brand.

Still a great scanner.......2004-11-17

Why am I writing a review for a scanner that has been out of production for 2 years? Because it's so darn good! I've had mine since January 2002 and it has performed without a hitch. I have upgraded to Mac OSX since I bought this and was really disappointed Epson did not make a driver for it. Luckliy I discovered Ed Hamrick's superb "VUESCAN" software. Get it at hamrick.com. On OSX or Windows it simply blows away any Twain driver or Epson driver. It rivals silverfast AI. The best thing about this scanner is the firewire interface. It's rocket fast for print scans. Why have scanner makers not migrated to this far superior interface?

You can scan film too, but be warned that 35mm is a bit soft. I've had some luck by scanning directly on the glass without a neg holder. 120 and 4x5 film look beautiful on this scanner. It has a great dynamic range-with the right software.

Pick one up used if you need the Firewire speed. You won't be disappointed.

Professional Photographer.......2003-02-06

Buyer Beware. I bought two of these scanners and both were defective. The first one had a large piece of plastic shaving under the scanning glass. The second one did not operate as the scanning light did not illuminate and I had to return that one too. I really liked the features that this scanner offered but I am not convinced of the reliablility of this product and would not recommend. If you decide to buy it-check your unit out closely when you get it home.

Check out the 2450 before you buy.......2003-01-20

I don't know about other customers, but my 2450 is worthless to me. It looked good and got good reviews and for my interest in photography I thought this was the answer to my needs. I assumed that it really would work with windows XP. That's questionable. Epson doesn't write the SmartPanel software and there have been many issues with that. After having new, updated software installed from Newsoft and the SmartPanel still didn't work, I then received an e-mail from Newsoft which said that there likly would be problems with the new version too. A phone call to Epson brought no resistance and a quick offer of a refund. That alone might have saved a customer for future purchases of Epson products. But not this 2450.
