Great little dictionary.......2007-09-20
I just started my 2nd semester of spanish & wanted a dictionary to help me with my studies. I decided on this model, BES-1850, because of the speaking aspect & I love it. It really has helped me with my pronunciation of the language & is much easier to use then a regular dictionary. I do agree that the screen is hard to read but I just use the backlighting on the dictionary & have no problems. I really am glad I broke down & purchased this item & use it daily.

I purchased this to help me learn Spanish, and I will say, even though I got it cheap, its not worth it. First, the screen is so dark and has such low contract, its almost impossible to read without the backlight. And the backlight turns off after a few seconds.
Then there is the speech. The volume is so low, its very hard to hear. The speaker is about 1/2" wide, so to say the sound is bad is an understatement.
So, other than the fact that you can't see it or hear it, is it good? Nope. I thought that a device which costs this much could at least translate a sentence. This one can't. Words only. There are some canned phases, but you have to search for what you want and most are pretty useless. Like for example "I'm in hotel room 10" O.K. But what happens if your in 345?
This thing may give you and your Spanish friends a good laugh, but not much more than that.

To begin with, the screen is so dull, even with backlight, that it is almost impossible to be seen indoors and impossible outdoors. You will not be able to type a word in and show it to someone as to get a particular product at the grocery story since they will not be able to see the screen. Even common words were not to be found and forget about phrases. Not to be recommended.

This is the best translators I have had. It has more words and phrases than most and I like the fact that when you type in an English word it gives you the direct word in Spanish and also phrases that are related to it. A lot of people complained about dim screens (probably because when you first turn it on you have to adjust the contrast which is very easy to do) and poor sound, but the one I have works just fine. This translator contains idioms, which a lot of dictionaries don't have, which helps me even now that I am almost fluent. I did have to agree with one of the other reviewers about the flap. It came off within a few months of having it, but that really doesn't bother me because when you close it, it will stay on.

Franklin Youth Talking Spanish - English Dictionary.......2007-06-11
Did not live up to our expectations at all. We have the English version of this, worked great for my visually impaired daughter. On that one, she can type a word, and the device not only pronounces the word, but speaks the entire definition, and it speaks the various other games and activities. She she can basically interact with all the features, since she knows the keyboard.
The Spanish-English does NOT work the same way. You type a word in English, "cat", it says "cat" (which you already know how to say). It prints "gato" on the lcd display, which is barely legible to a sighted person. It does NOT say "gato" or anything else. The manual says it can pronounce any highlighted word in a definition, but no words are ever highlighted! It CAN say "gato", if you type it in, but of course does not then say the English word "cat". So it cannot connect spoken English words with spoken Spanish words, and speaks no definitions. It only very minimally fulfils the "talking" part. So for us, it's pretty useless, while its English counterpart was quite useful.

My granddaughter loved it and used it all day long translating everything anybody said to Spanish. I think it will be a great educational tool for her.

Although the Larousse dictionary is very good, the user interface for this product leaves much to be desired. Getting from one function to another is cumbersome, involving many non intuitive button presses. The translator/dictionary is also very slow and would benefit from an upgrade in processing speed. I would not recommend this product.

Estoy utilizando este diccionario principalmente para leer literatura en inglés y puedo decir que me ha sorprendido la cantidad de vocabulario que trae. Al principio pensé que necesitaría comprar la tarjeta de ampliación para poder acceder a vocabulario mas rebuscado, pero de momento me basta y me sobra la memoria interna del diccionario. La pronunciación es bastante buena, mejor la inglesa que la española.
Tengo sin embargo dos críticas que compartir: la primera es que como algún otro usuario ya ha dicho, la pantalla no tiene luz, así es que si no estas en un lugar bien iluminado no se ve nada. La segunda se refiere a las notas culturales. Como española les recomiendo obviarlas, hablan de la España de hace 40 anos, destacando eventos como el 20N (día de la muerte del dictador Francisco Franco) o de acrónimos como BUP (Bachillerato Unificado Polivalente) que tras la reforma educativa de 1992 o 93 (lo siento, no me acuerdo del año exactamente) ya no representan nada.
Por lo demás, considero que los 120 dólares estuvieron muy bien empleados.

I have used a lot of translators in the past. I am a language buff. This particular one is the best that I have used. The dictionaries are excellent, containing words that many others do not include. When I inserted the French bookman card in the back, it worked flawlessly giving me both Spanish and French capabilities. I could nit pick, based on my personal preferences, but if you are looking for a user friendly and comprehensive translator, at a reasonable price, this is the one.

This is not simply the Franklin 1470 in a different container, as one commenter claims. The 1470 contains the Merriam-Webster Spanish Dictionary, while this contains the Larousse Concise Spanish English Dictionary, which is much better.
This is by far the best electronic Spanish-English dictionary on the market at the moment and worth the extra bucks. My only complaint is that when using the Merriam-Webster English dictionary, which is also on this unit, it automatically switches back to the Larousse dictionary after switching off, instead of remaining where is was between shutoffs. That's annoying if want to keep using the English dictionary. However, if you use a Bookman card, it returns to that after shutoffs as it should.

This was a nice piece of equipment. However, I was looking for a device that would translate sentences. This device does not. However, it was useful in translating basic phrases and words.

The worst portable eletronic device I have ever bought.......2007-04-08
I bought this "Electronic Speaking Dictionary" (BES-1850) for someone as a gift. I hadn't seen Franklin's products before. When the recipient showed me this device, I became ashamed of giving her such a thing.
First of all, the display was unreadable. The disfigured black font on dark green background could not be read without an external source of light. Even its back light feature couldn't help.
I tried to have it speak the words to reduce my regret but its built-in speaker was so weak that you couldn't hear anything even in a quiet room. After using its earphone you could hear some faint sounds.
I couldn't believe a well-known company sold me such a extremely low-quality product. I changed the new batteries with another set of new batteries with no benefit.
The provided sentences for daily conversations were very limited. In any case, it didn't matter what kind of information they stored in that device; You couldn't read or hear it!
In the era of powerful handheld devices with the capability of storing and presenting huge amount of information in very usable formats, this "thing" is just a joke. The design, quality, and functionality of this thing is more than a decade behind the current technologies.
In short, do not even think about buying this item!

This dictionary is definitely pretty good. I have no problems with the translations or the speaking aspect of it. As a Spanish III PreAP student, this is extremely helpful. Rarely does it ever return no results, and even then, usually you just need to dissect the word a little (i.e. take off attached direct objects) and then it finds the word. You can search misspelled words, conjugated verbs, etc. If you're doing a crossword puzzle and you only know two letters of a word, just type in "???b???o?" and it will give you every single word that meets those requirements. Games (not that fun), word lists, and a slot for installing Franklin Bookman cards (I have a speaking Merriam-Webster English Dictionary/Thesarus) are included too. Never tried syncing to a computer, so I can't comment on that.
Now, some gripes:
-The verb conjugator is not very intuitive. To get to, say, imperative, you have to go through present, imperfect, preterite, present progressive, present progressive II, future, present pluperfect, past pluperfect, and about 5 more. Each tense is presented as a seperate screen. Now, this wouldn't be so annoying except for the fact that it takes the dictionary about 4 seconds to pull up each tense, so it takes a while to get to the tense you need. Be careful not to overshoot it, or you'll have to start over once again! You can't jump to the tense you want immediately. Having said that, the verb conjugator can conjugate any known verb; I haven't had any problems with it so far.
-The cover/lid is rather cheap and flimsy, and it will break off if you drop it while open. It's also not that easy to open, but just push the lid towards you and it will open fine. It does feel rather cheap, though, but it IS made in Malaysia.
-The screen is not that great. You have to strike a balance between actually being able to easily read the text and having to scroll a whole bunch of times to see everything. By the way, the contrast settings SUCK.
So why am I still giving it 4 stars? Because it's helpful, it's portable, and the Bookman slot makes this unit very expandable, which is just what I need. After you get used to the screen, it's fine. The major gripe I have about this is the verb conjugator interface. Otherwise, this unit would have been (essentially) perfect for me. Definitely worth it!

Awful Sale!.......2006-11-11
I purchased an english spanish dictionary for $99.95. When I recieved my package it was not what I ordered. The seller told me an "updated" one was sent to me. I have told the seller I was interested in the item on the page I saw and provided a link to the page. The seller told me I would have to pay $300.00 more for an exchange. But clearly the price was $99.95 on the page. So I returned for a refund paying $8.00 for postage. The item was recieve to the seller on September 15,2006. I asked for a refund the seller told me she did not recieve the item. I continuous wrote to the seller numerous times and even provided the tracking number which provided the item was recieved to the seller on September 15 at 9:22am. Over three weeks passed and the seller still told me she did not recieve my return. I has a file a claim to amazon and the seller then refunded my $99.95. I still lost out on my $8.00 postage and didn't get my item. WOULD NEVER BUY FROM AGAIN!!

The simple fact that it can speak 520,000 words in Spanish and English made me buy this dictionary. I was pleasantly surprised by how sturdy and easy to use it was. The speech synthesis took some getting used to but I see now that it really is a clever thing to have and am glad I didn't go for the one that doesn't talk.
I think the phrasebook would be good for someone who didn't know anything at all. I haven't used the medical and legal terms it says it comes with (and hope I won't have to!) but its good to know they're there. All in all I give it two thumbs up.

This is a mediocre english to spanish translator (I have about a 40% success rate when looking up spanish words...) that suffers greatly from a very poor keyboard; I have to press keys several times to get them entered on each word. Too bad...
