A few years ago, when personal GPSs first became available, every geek from here to Poughkeepsie was enthralled about the possibility of always knowing exactly where on the planet he or she was. While the Garmin eTrex isn't the most feature-rich GPS out there, it will definitely come in handy if you don't want your next camping trip to end up like a scene from The Blair Witch Project.

The eTrex allows you to pack more detail into your adventure with added color, expandable memory, and automatic routing capabilities.

The eTrex is sort of a dumbed-down, rugged version of the company's more advanced eMap. Designed specifically for hiking, biking, and camping, the eTrex is one of the easiest-to-use GPS units available. It offers the ability to track up to 12 satellites so you never lose contact with one. The eTrex won't work inside--however, we don't anticipate that you'll get lost inside a building very often.

Among the eTrex's notable features is its ability to calculate your current and average speed. We used the eTrex to determine the distance from work to home, and to calculate how fast we were walking. This helped us gauge the average time it should take to get to work. This feature should really come in handy on extended hiking, camping, or cycling trips where planning your average speed and tracking the distance traveled is critical.

I used an old model of this unit during a weeklong kayaking trip along the Maine coast, and I recommend it highly for anyone going point-to-point over water. A kayak's a terrible place to navigate from -- no place to set out a chart, water everywhere -- so being able to simply point the boat at a waypoint is a comforting luxury. Put your waypoints in the night before you leave and enjoy the trip. Also, my unit was routinely wet but kept on ticking.

If you need a basic GPS receiver, this is it. No complication, no headache. This is very similar to etrext legend, but no stick, no map and no area calculation. But you have a map page where you can view your waypoints and your active track log. Also notice that the box does not contain the PC interface cable. If you need to transfer data to PC, then order it separately, or buy etrex legend (its box contains this cable).

This unit works as they say. I only need it for location coordinates and it works great. I tried setting markers and waypoints to find my way back to a starting point, but the unit seemed to want me to return in a straighter line vs the one I walked. Many other features I have yet to use and may not need as I only need a location point. For the money, I got what I paid for.

The Kingston flash drive is satisfactory so far--small and cute, which is fun. Looks like the cap will hold up, and it is small enough I can fit another next to it in a computer.

Only thing I am not a huge fan of is the string that it is hanging off of--a little small and took me quite a while to actually get the string through.

The jumpdrive works great! With it's unique design, friends will occasionally ask you what you're carrying on your key chain. I don't remember if it comes with a the ring thing that you use for attaching it to a keychain, but it easy and safe enough to attach one. It is really quite small and lightweight. The cap is sturdy and will not fall off, although it not fully attached to the device. I have owned this for about a year and I have been completely satisfied.

For some reason, this device stopped working on my desktop computer. Somehow the computer "lost" the driver for the device, which is odd seeing as how it worked before. I searched the web for the driver and finally asked Kingston for it via their help request, and they told me the driver was not available. If they don't have it, how did Windows get it?

After that I tried the device in my laptop, and it worked just fine.

If you have a pair of Shure headphones, you will need more of these! Probably the most expensive way of fitting the headphones to your ears, but they sound and feel so much better than any of the other modes of fitting.
My only criticism is that they get dirty very quickly, and could last a little longer. Usually I get about a week of use out of them, though rotating 2 pairs at a time often helps them regain their shape between uses and prolongs their life.

Do the Job but WAAAAY over priced........2007-02-12

Disposable little tiny pieces of yellow foam which do a nice job of sealing your ears and providing comfort, however, they get dirty very quickly no matter how often you clean your ears before each use, and than you have to toss them and put in another pair.

If you have a lot of disposable income,(pun intended) I suppose they may be worthwhile. However I've switched to the silicon as they are washable, last longer and with a little patience, get almost (though not exactly) as comfortable.

Tip to make them last longer....put a little anti-bacterial dish washing liquid in your hands and wash them with warm water. They become clean and bright yellow again and only take a little while to dry. Love the sound isolation and comfort of the foam! A must-have!

Very Good Ink in VERY Small Containers.......2007-06-01

As inks go, this appears to be very good stuff. In fact, they say it's guaranteed to last 200+ years, although I'm not sure who around me will go ask for a free cartridge if my documents or photos only last 150 years. More to the point, it DOES look great.

On the other hand, these cartridges are around 30 bucks a piece and I need 8, so it rather irks me that the cartridges are so small. Perhaps that's a comment more appropriate for a review of the printer design, but it's worth noting here.

Also worth noting is that you SHOULD NOT immediately replace the ink cartridge in your HP B9180 when you get a message from it saying that this or that cartridge is about to run out. I say this because, when mine said that, I checked the little meter that tells you how much is left and it said 40% of the cartridge still had ink in it. 40%! To me, 40% is not "about to run out," but I did go ahead and buy an ink cartridge -- I just held onto it until it really became obvious that it was no longer printing that color. Only then did I replace the cartridge, because doing otherwise is needlessly wasting money.

I'm not quite cynical enough to say that HP WANTS you to replace (and recycle) the ink cartridges prematurely, but it obviously would make them more money if you do. Just keep your eyes open and you'll be fine.

This is more a review of AMAZON's great service than the ink. If you own the HP B9180 then you simply Must use this ink.
My local photo stores and office supply stores simply do not stock this ink... and ordering from other online shops id "iffy" at best. With Amazon (And an Amazon Prime account) I get super fast FREE shipping and Amazon has not been out of stock yet.

I purchase this camera a couple couple months ago (July 07) and all in all it's worked out well. I've spent a lot of time with it under water and I've been pleased with it's performance.

Pros:
1)Pretty good video resolution, even on my 32 inch TV.
2)It's passed several underwater video tests without any problems. The seal has held and the images were surprisingly clear.
3)Very portable, fits easily in my front trouser pocket.
4)Battery holds a decent charge, though a back up battery is probably a good idea.
5) The menu is easy to navigate.
6) Seems to be fairly durable.

Cons:
1) The buttons are awkward to use. I attribute this to the "pistol grip" nature of the design which requires you to use your thumb to press the buttons while trying to hold the camera in some fashion with your fingers. Difficult to master.
2) As another reviewer mentioned, the fact that the lens is not perpendicular to the grip takes a little getting used to. You find that you have a tendency to aim too high.
3) Audio is only mediocre. Though I've never owned a video camera that had what I would regard as good audio so it wasn't a surprise.
4) The 6 mp sill images are OK but not great. I think my old 3.2 mp Canon Elf takes better looking pictures. Proof that good images aren't just about how many mega pixels you have.

Bottom Line:
None of the cons were problematic enough for me to regret buying this camera. I was looking for small, weather proof video camera that took at least decent stills and the E1 has, thus far, satisfied or exceeded those requirements.

I hook mine to a kitesurfing kite or kiteboard (wetstuff.com) and am having a ball figuring out how to mount it best. Some of you won't get past the fact that you can't see sh/t on that little screen when you are in the Sun ...that the voice/noise prompts are not loud enough when there's other noise ...the buttons are too small for manly fingers ..but if you surf, paddle, boogieboard ..or do the nasty underwater and want to remember it when you're 60 ..then this is a little jewel. Just rememeber to close it tight! (I got sand in the seal and had a slight leak..)

I get about 1 hour+15 min out of the supplied, 729mAh battery and a 1meg SD card. Just perfect for my uses. I bought 875mAh, 'bigger/better' batteries on Ebay - they last 35min ea. So much for leaving the reservation.

My bigger problem, at the moment, is learning iMovie or Quicktime Pro so I can make the hour into 3-5minutes of something that doesn't trigger narcolepsy in non-kiters. Have fun!

quality issue.......2007-09-03

I bought this waterproof camera on July 21st. I was satisfied by its easy of use. the still picture is too bad, if you're used to use canon rebel. but still, I wanted to keep it. but after 40 days, it refuses to work any more. the screen is black in either photo or video mode. recording is black. playback still works though. I'm not sure if I can exchange a new one from the seller "the factory depot". I'll keep you updated.
I would suggest buyer to take the product quality into consideration. When it breaks, a lot of hassle will come with it.

After reading the positive review in "Wired" magazine, I went ahead an bought this camera. I was looking for an easy to use, durable still and video camera for capturing family activities (vacations, sporting events, everyday life, etc). From an ease of use standpoint, I'm very happy! This is a very easy to use, ergonomically friendly little camera if you're looking to capture memories, not professional quality videos.

I'm not happy, however, with the software that's included with the camera. Playback is choppy, response is slow (i have a Vista machine running with 2GB RAM at 2GHZ), and I'm now looking around for the right software to use for making movies out of my footage.

I understand there are codec issues with Windows Movie Maker from Jason's post. Trying to find the downloads he references. I can't play my clips using my WMM (v 6).

The individual clips work just fine if I view them using QuickTime player. I'd buy QuickTime Pro, but I understand you can't make DVD's with it.

Any suggestions here would be appreciated. Thanks!

I, too, find that I have to replace the cartridges WAY too fast for the small amount of printing I do -- and cartridges for this model are NOT refillable.

I have to replace the magenta and yellow cartridges again, but when they're empty I'm buying a better printer.

I just used it for about 3-5 times. In a simple file. Theres not much color on the files. And then Its already empty. All of the 3 ink jets i purchased is already empty.
