Does the job I bought it to do. Great product at a great price.

4 out of 5 stars great card.. I think, but it won't work with older camers.......2007-09-24

I'm sure this memory card is great: But note, it didn't work with my Cannon PowerShot SD450 - this maybe due to the card, but I think that older cameras don't support the "HC" card technology. The packaging and fine details don't really tell you how to determine this though...

5 out of 5 stars Very resonable performance/price ratio.......2007-09-22

Bought this SD card with the Panasonic FZ8 digital camera
together as a package. It functioning flawlessly with my
FZ8 and NYKO XBOX 360 multi reader.

I bought this card for use with my Nikon D80 camera and it is a perfect match. Writing is great and reading is also very fast. Definitively happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Love it........2007-09-22

As always, Amazon's delivery was very fast, and the product is dreamy. Had it up and going in minutes, and it has worked flawlessly for me for about a month now. I'm a school teacher and grad student, so it prints lots of lesson plans, worksheets, and grad papers, and I haven't had a problem with it yet. I live in humid MD and haven't had a problem with paper curling. Only complaint is I haven't easily found the website printer manager and haven't had time to scour the pamphlet for directions. Oh, and I use a macbook, hooked up with ethernet...no problems with mac compatibility.

5 out of 5 stars Brother HL-2070N.......2007-09-10

Have only had this printer for about a month now, but I am well pleased with it. Relatively easy to set up. Had the wireless option, which I like very much, since I use a laptop. Prints really fast and very clear, interested in seeing how many copies I can get before needs toner.

5 out of 5 stars Good and steady.......2007-09-04

I had my doubts about Brother before I bought this, but over six months in and this is a rock solid performer. I don't push the limits with it, but it never acts up or eats paper. I also like that it shuts down when not in use and starts up just be sending a print job to it. Nice feature.

5 out of 5 stars Best Price Performer for a Compact Laser Printer.......2007-09-03

For about $100, I purchased this monochrome laser printer to replace my old Canon laser printer. It was also small and about the same size of an inkjet printer. Its quality at 600 dpi is sufficient to read the street names printed from Yahoo-Map. I don't need to improve the quality further to 1200 dpi. The printer was fast, first page in 10 seconds. I have a color inkjet printer in the same network. But I use this printer for most balck and white printout becuase it is fast and more economical. It also does not smear when I go over some area of the print with a highlighter.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Brother HL-2070N Network Monochrome Laser Printer.......2007-09-03

This is a great network printer for my needs. - A home networked printer to print quick documents, in black/white, and it has a very small footprint and very quiet. It is energy star complient, so it enters a sleep mode while not in use. Which is esp. great when i forget to turn it off, and it immediately wakes from sleep. I use both Macintosh and Windows environments, and I feel it was very easy to setup through Mac OSX. Windows required some extra effort.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says, and has a good web management console.......2007-08-25

This is a really nice printer-scanner-fax for its price: perfect for casual home printing or even a small office. The printer has a webpage where you can see how many pages have been printed, scanned, faxed etc. The speed is good - a 20ppm laser is way way faster than a 20 ppm inkjet since the inkjet only gives the 20ppm speed at its lowest (almost unusable) settings while the laser gives it at its normal settings. Another advantage over the inkjet is, it can print a large document (100 page or maybe more) without getting stuck or running out of paper - my previous brother inkjet MFC always ran into paper jam or something if printed 40 or more pages at once.

I have not had any problems with it in the last few months I have had it.

Faxing and scanning work over the network as well, aside from printing. And thats not just on the home network: with a little configuration of ports on your home router, you can even access the printer from outside your home. You may say thats not very useful since you need to be home to pick up the printout but it is a good feature to have for some occasional usefulness. I once printed a document when connected to the Internet at an airport, just to have it ready for reading when I got back home.

It automatically enters a low power mode if not used for 5 minutes (can increase the timeout to more than 5 minutes on its management webpage if needed). The low power mode is absolutely quiet since theres no fan running.

It seems the unit has an FTP server but that is not documented and I could not figure out how to really use it- I put a file in its FTP folder, the unit automatically deleted the file. And maybe I should have expected this, it printed the file before deleting it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this printer!.......2007-08-24

I love this printer. Installation was a breeze. First page comes out in 5 secs and it's a laser printer too! Fax feature was very easy to use and it can be set up via network. Copier is very easy to use as well, just like any regular copier you see. I love the feeder feature for copying multiple pages.

I haven't encounter any paper curling problem so far. However, this is only my first day on this machine. I should have another update on this machine if anything should change. But, so far I'm in love with this printer/fax/copier/scanner! And it's only for 299.99 with shipping and tax. You can't beat that!

5 out of 5 stars Singularly useful office equipment.......2007-08-23

- It supports open standards (so it works across Windows, MAC, Linux).

- Faxes look great because it's a laser printer.

- Scanning is very convenient - it will take a stack of paper and make a multi-page PDF for you.

- Doesn't depend on one computer or another - multiple computers can connect to it at the same time over the network.

5 out of 5 stars Good and cheap.......2007-08-23

Except for envelope squashing, this is a great buy. The envelope corners get wrinkled when printing.

Otherwise this is a great value.

3 out of 5 stars ok for the price.......2007-07-28

The toner cartridge supplied malfunctioned at the start. It took over a week and several long wait calls to get a replacement.
The unit now works.Quite fast, some paper wrinkling due to heat, cheap plastic housing, but alot of function for the price.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressed!.......2007-09-14

I just recieved this product in the mail last night. Total approximate time, with medium experience of printers and networking, to print my first test page, wirelessly, was 15 minutes. The ink cartridges load SO easy compared to other printers that I've been through. I also like the fact that if you run out of one color, all you need to do is buy that color. Not a whole new 3-ink-in-1 cartridge that you would normally buy for $25-$30.
The reasons that I decided to spend the money on this machine are:

1. Rave reviews by most others on this site.
2. 802.11g capability. (the ability to print from another room w/o USB).
3. Photo quality printing. After 20min I printed my first photo. WOW!!
4. Paper is loaded from a tray. Not hanging out the back all crooked.
5. Windows Vista compatible.

On the Vista note, I did have trouble setting up the default printer suite. Instead of installing the whole thing just install the driver using the "Add new printer" option through windows. Select have disk, and it will recognize without issue. All in all, read the manual and you WILL be fine.
I am very pleased so far with my purchase. I will never buy one of those "All-in-One Wal-mart deals" again! $30 for a printer seems like a steal doesn't it? Well, have you ever heard the saying, "You get what you pay for?".

5 out of 5 stars Best choice.......2007-09-06

I wanted something like this for my business all in one machine. I am very
happy with this product. The price was very good too. the delivery was on time.

5 out of 5 stars Frustrating but FINALLY worth it..........2007-09-04

I thought I was going to pull my hair out to before I would ever get this installed! I'm not very technically savvy, but not an idiot either. I had a difficult time navigating the instructions as nothing seemed to mention Windows Vista, yet there was a disk enclosed labled Windows Vista. After two days of complete frustration, installing and uninstalling software, reading and re-reading the "destructions," multiple trips/downloads from the Brother website (not too helpful), I finally had to call in the big guns. (Wonderful IT neighbor guy...)He was able to load it in a couple of hours but was also challenged by the lack of Vista instructions and found it easier just to "build his own path."

That said, after the dust has settled I'm pleased to say I'm thrilled with this printer! The quality is great, it's quiet, it has easy features, it's fairly compact for what it does, and I haven't had a bit of trouble with it.(If you completely disregard the above paragraph...)

However, I recommend that if you purchase this and you're not a computer wizard, HIRE somebody to come and hook it up if you're running Vista. It will save you time and frustration which will be so much more valuable than the cash you'll drop for a quick set up!

5 out of 5 stars Great features for a great price........2007-08-31

It is easy to set up and use, it prints and copies well, it has a handset and a message center, it faxes fine for home use, and it's also a scanner. It's also got wired or wireless networking, which is extremely simple to use, and it's got features like PC Fax, and many options(although I haven't tried them). As long as you don't need a super-powered printer, but want networking with these functions, the 665-cw can't be beat.

4 out of 5 stars Good Machine.......2007-07-24

I do have to mention that there are 4 ink cartrigaes required. If you do not have all of them with ink the entire machine will not print anything. Just one thing to be aware of. Most of HP models are the same way, although I heard one of there models may not be this way.

Othewise, the machine looked nice and sleek and appears from other reviews to do a nice job and be user friendly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It works fine.......2007-09-11

This device works as expected. I think Canon should have included bluetooth with the iP90v printer that I bought, but hey, they've got to make money too.

Just like other reviewers have stated, there is no documentation on how to insert it into the printer. I had to do research on Canon's site to find out how. But basically it goes inside a slot inside the front, left side of the printer (if the printer is facing you). You might need to open the top cover of the printer to ensure it's properly inserted.

Good luck!

I am very satisfied with this adapter. Works great. A little slow at a distance, but that is understandable.

4 out of 5 stars Installing BU-10 Bluetooth adapter with Canon Pixma iP90v on Vista.......2007-06-15

The Canon i80, Pixma iP90, and now (despite its cost) the new Pixma iP90v series of mobile high-quality fast inkjet (color photo) printers are an excellent investment for travelers (we paid US$230 in all in June 07, including S&H, on eBay for a practically new iP90v with 28 months left on an extended warranty from Best Buy). Though offering plug-and-play use with a USB connection, the optional and rather expensive Canon BU-10 Bluetooth adapter is a better solution, especially if the printer is going to be shared among several computers (we paid $67.30 in all for a brand new but open-box item online). The following blog describes how I resolved problems with installing the BU-10 on (our 2) Vista (laptops).

The instructions below apply primarily to the new Vista-compatible Pixma iP90v, but should be mostly applicable also to the earlier Pixma iP90, for which you can download the Vista drivers from the Canon site. The iP90v is essentially the same internally as the iP90 and will show up in your Printers panel and in other Vista (driver, etc.) notifications simply as the iP90. What follows may apply at least in part for other Canon printers, like the i80, which are now certified Vista-compatible, and on Windows XP SP 2.

Physically installing the BU-10 adapter into the printer:

* Illustrated steps online at Canon for installing BU-10 along with its 'cover' on the i80 Bubble Jet

* Procedure is similar for the Pixma iP90v but attaching the small 'cover' is superfluous for this model

How to install the Pixma iP90v on your computer for Bluetooth (wireless) printing (see also):

1) Install the printer first using the wired USB connection and ensure that it's printing correctly.

2) Disconnect the USB cord and ensure that your Bluetooth radio (built-in or added USB transceiver) is on.

3) Click on Printers in the Control Panel, then click "Add a printer" on the menu at the top

4) Click on "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer" in the "Add Printer" dialog box.

5) If the Canon printer does not show up, click on "Stop" then on "The printer that I want is not listed"

6) Choose "Add a Bluetooth printer" (the option button at the bottom) and click on Next

7) Select the Canon printer when it shows up in the Search window (might have to retry a couple of times)

8) When you complete the steps, the printer is installed (2 items are added by the installation routine)

What you should not do and why:

Do not use the Bluetooth Devices panel in the Control Panel to add the printer (as you would have done for other devices such as phones, PDAs, headsets, GPS, etc.). If you do so , Vista will create a (superfluous) COM port for the printer, add a number of other items in its installation routine, and--worst of all--search in vain everywhere (including through Windows Update) for a (missing driver for a) Bluetooth Peripheral Device. This is a specifically Vista (as opposed to Windows XP) issue that has been reported in the forums by others using a variety of other (than printer) Bluetooth-enabled devices.

This error will not stop you from printing wirelessly to the printer. But you'll then be bothered, each time you restart the computer or log back in, by a Vista notification to search again for this device, ask you again later, or not to show this message again for this device ("your device will not function until you install driver software"). Moreover, if you are using a (Microsoft Wireless) transceiver (for Bluetooth) to provide such functionality on your computer, Vista will create a new instance of the Bluetooth printer in your Printers panel and increment its assigned COM port number by 1. The existing Bluetooth entry will be retained but labeled as being offline (obliging you to delete the latter). This behavior has been reproduced and confirmed by Canon support with whom I've been cooperating via email from 11-15 June to troubleshoot and resolve the iP90v Bluetooth installation routine on Vista.

Using the Add Printer routine, on the other hand, does not a create a COM port entry for the printer. Moreover, the installation routine only adds 2 items: 1) ??? and 2) iP90 printer driver. So you'll not be repeatedly bothered by the Bluetooth Peripheral Device notification described above. Nor by the creation of additional COM ports and printer instances each time you reinsert the USB transceiver.

I've advised Canon support to provide clear instructions, including the pertinent details from above, for installing the BU-10 Bluetooth adapter both physically on the printer (not all obvious...) and also by way of configuring the Vista computer to recognize it correctly. There is nothing in the computer manual nor in the boxed BU-10 package (which included a superfluous USB cable but not even a quick-start sheet of paper). Neither do they seem available online on the relevant product pages at the Canon site. However, Canon's email support has stuck with me patiently all the way through the troubleshooting procedures.

The Pixma iP90/90v seems to pack a lot of punch into a highly compact portable format. If you're frequently on the road, it's an investment you probably won't regret.

svAbhinava

PS. I have a more complete version, with useful hyperlinks, at my computer blog. The best way to find it is to search for "Sunthar Visuvalingam - Pixma iP90/90v Bluetooth printer on Vista" on Google (as Amazon doesn't allow hyperlinks in reviews).

5 out of 5 stars Canon BU-10.......2007-05-20

Purchased product from a company on the East Coast. Packaged arrived within five days and was as advertised. Installed into Canon iP-90v portable printer in a 15 seconds. Was up and running wireless printing within five minutes. Great product, easy install and quick bluetooth connect. I highly recommend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performer.......2007-09-27

I have two now. They networked very easily with my Macs. My only complaint is the smallish paper tray, a small inconvenience. The cost of consumables is a real plus, even using original Brother cartridges instead of reloads. All my other printers have been HP's in the past, but given the features, the pricing and the inexpensive consumables, Brother wins big time.

5 out of 5 stars Brother HL5250 DN Printer.......2007-09-14

This printer is everything I thought it would be when I purchased it. I am using the buildin network interface and had no problem doing the configuration. The only issue is when it warms up it pulls so much current, I get a warning from my UPS but it quickly goes back to an acceptable load.

3 out of 5 stars What happened to the rear paper feed?.......2007-09-08

Update -- I submitted an inquiry to Brother's online help and they answered within one business day. Turns out it's on the front, not the rear. My bad.

This printer says it has a rear feed that holds up to 50 sheets. When I tried to print labels using MS Word it defaults to the rear feed. When I opened the rear door -- guess what? No paper handling devices were there. It's just a door. And the labels or plain paper will not feed into the apparent slot available. Also no manual came with the printer, not even on the install disk. I had to download a pdf file from Brother's website.

4 out of 5 stars Very good laser printer.......2007-08-24

Overall, I have been very pleased with this printer. The size and weight makes it very convenient to tuck away out of sight. The print quality and speed are very good and the duplex feature works very well. I was surprised at how well the duplex works. It printed so quickly that I didn't think it worked! I would give this 5 stars but the chassis seems a bit flimsy. It feels like it is going to snap apart when you open the front cover. But that shouldn't prevent you from buying this printer.

4 out of 5 stars Fast printer, easy network set up.......2007-08-16

I just got the printer this week and compared to an ink jet it is very fast. As other reviewers have noted, the paper tray seems a little flimsy and the paper comes out curled at the edges, but I can live with that.

Printer driver installation was easy on a network. I connected the printer to a wireless broadband router after the drivers were installed on one computer. I didn't disconnect the printer when I installed the drivers on a wirelessly connected computer and it installed without any problems. It was fun to be able to print via the network rather than by printer sharing.

The only faults I have with the printer so far are:
1) I connected it to a spare 275 W UPS I had and it apparently drew too much power so the UPS started beeping and tripped out. However, when I connected it to the surge suppressor side nothing happened.

2) The power button is on the back at the bottom right of the machine.

3) When it goes into sleep mode, no lights show on top, so you could accidentally leave it on. Since the manual stated that the machine must be plugged in to an easily accessible plug so that it can be plugged out in an emergency, I prefer to know if the machine is on or not.

4) Printing at the lowest setting with toner saver on doesn't seem as bright or as sharp as draft printing on my old HP 710C.

5) Don't print charts with text on the lowest settings and toner saver on - better to use the highest quality with toner saver off.

6) Not very good at printing photos, even at the highest settings (HQ 1200 dpi) - banding seen.

I still like it though :-)

2 out of 5 stars Mine lasted 15 months before going DEAD. .......2007-09-17

I purchased this model for work and can honestly state that I use it no more than a couple times a week on average. 14 months of use and now I get skewed printing, a problem that technicians have told me is not an easy/cheap fix. So I place a call to Brother to see if I can get some sort of customer "service" and all I get is a cold "NO". We are not dealing with a $100 printer here and the fact that they were so unwilling to even cover the cost of parts makes me regret ever purchasing a Brother product. According to Brother, they cover for the first year after purchase or sixteen months after date of manufacturer. My machine is 18 months out of manufacturing, and 14 months since the date of purchase. Sure its a bit off but you would think that they would be willing to help out considering its a $500 machine. Unfortunately, the company has a long way to go in their customer service department.
Basically, I would suggest looking into other similar machines with better manufacturer's warranties...it will save you a lot of trouble and money in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars We are very happy........2007-09-17

This is a user friendly, with a little concentration, true multi-tasker. For 1/3 the size of our previous copier and our previous fax machine put together, we have both. The print quality is truely outstanding and the auto feed function doesn't miss a page. You'll be pleased with this one!

5 out of 5 stars Great network printer/scanner.......2007-09-16

Prior to buying this machine, I bought a Canon multifunction printer which was supposed to work with an Axis print server. To my disappointment, there were all sorts of problems and I would end up having to check on the print server every time I wanted to print or scan something.

Unlike the Canon, this machine has worked perfectly. I am able to scan and print from all 9 computers on my network without ever having issues. This is a great printer for anyone on a small network with moderate printing and scanning needs.

2 out of 5 stars Poor support for Vista.......2007-08-29

I have had the machine for about a week and just now got around to doing some scanning with it. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that scanning from the machine (instead of using the software interface at the pc level), does not work. I called Brother and they told me that there is no support for Vista. Amazingly, they have no known plans to offer support for Vista in the future either.

A big disappointment from Brother. Why didn't they outline this incompatibility in their sales litterature? I hope that this post helps others avoid the hassle of buying a machine that will need to be shipped back.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality ink.......2007-08-19

This printer works well except for one major problem - Brother ink does not adhere to the paper. I use good quality stationery in my business and found that the ink smudged and rubbed off, particularly on envelopes. The problem is not too bad with regular white copy paper, but if you plan to use good stationery, don't buy a Brother printer!

2 out of 5 stars minimal.......2007-08-21

Brother 7820N:
1. Cannot reliably print envelopes, including and especially #10. If that's important to you, find another machine.
2. Scan for fax very slow. VERY slow. Interminable.
3. Software minimal, very poorly designed. Fax and scan management thin, missing functions and management options.
4. Support (help; manuals; online) incomplete, inaccurate.
5. Will not automatically re-set after paper jam clear. (Have to power cycle.)

Everything about the machine says "absolute minimum"--fit, function, design, engineering, materials, assembly, software (incl driver).

A reasonable guess: Brother put the machine out there to hit a price point. Sold a bundle of them on the strength of early reviews.

2 out of 5 stars DO NOT BOTHER.......2007-07-18

I assume other printers/copiers must do their jobs better than this one. The quality of the output is fine but I have constantly had to clean the drum (done easily, admittedly). The two worst features are its inability to print envelopes--at least five creases per envelope on every try--and the print/copy output comes out very curled and winds up on the floor. This printer appears unable to copy/print more than ten pages without pushing it into a messy pile or all the way onto the floor. And did I mention the high degree of curling of the output (I did, but I will do it again). As a small business I will not buy a Brother printer-assuming they all share these faults (admittedly could be wrong). I will search another company's product line.

3 out of 5 stars Oh, Brother !!!!! You are fast and cheap........2007-06-27

The printer is fast in all respects: printing, warm-up, copying, scanning and faxing. The automatic paper feed is outstanding. The output (printing and copying) is clear and excellent. The only negatives are that the envelopes get creased pretty badly when being printed and the paper seems to curl a lot. The creased envelopes, I think, has to do with the tightness of the paper feed. The creasing occurs only in the lower right quandrant of the printed envelope. The curled paper probably has to with heat within the unit (I never turn the printer off) although it goes into a "sleep mode" when unused.

I still recommend the printer because I generate a lot of paper output and create few envelopes. I am investigating a better grade of paper which may solve the curled paper issue. This is a fantastic value and it a good-looking device.

4 out of 5 stars Nice small office printer.......2007-05-19

I have always been happy with Brother printers, and this one is no exception. It prints fast and clear, the functions are plentiful and it doesn't take up all that much desk space. One thing I have noticed is that the paper gets kind of curled after if comes out of the machine if you print a bunch of copies. And it's not very convenient to get the printed pages out of the middle of the machine. But overall, a very nice machine and one that I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Super fast little guy.......2007-03-30

We have been using this printer for a little over a month now at work where we print an average of about 100 pages a day and this little guy chugs through it like it was nothing. The best part of it all is the speed. It is quick to warm up and prints 30ppm, which is a billion times faster than our previous Brother printer (or so it seems). The print quality is excellent but so are most laser printers so that's not really a stand-out. As mentioned by everyone else here, the envelopes do get a little crinkled when they are printed through the printer but that beats our last brother printer that seemed to jam more often than not when printing envelopes. I have yet to have an envelope jam. A trade off (crinkled envelope to jammed envelope) we are willing to take any day. To print an enveiope you have to open a little door in the front of the printer to access the feed for it. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. So, why four stars? Well, the crinkled envelope issue mainly and also the plastic quality used to build the machine seems a little cheap (at least compared to our last Brother printer). Definitely not a big deal but warrants the four stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice for Home or Small Office.......2007-09-07

When you take the Ether Disk Mini out of the box, the first thing you will notice is that there is a fair amount of heft to this device. That is largely due to the metal case, which acts as a heat sink for the hard drive. In addition to that, the EDMini has a small fan. There should be no concerns about overheating even if it is left running 24x7.

On the back of the device, there is a 10 / 100 / 1000 (wired) Ethernet port. At 100 Meg, or better yet, Gigabit (1000), you should be able to stream DVD-quality video without a problem. There are 2 USB ports on the back of the device too. One can be used to connect the Mini directly to a PC. The other can be used to add more disk space to the device - add a second external USB drive.

There is a wizard on the CD to make it easy to `find' the EDMini on your network and perform the initial configuration. Although, you may not even need to do any configuring of the device. It comes with a Windows share predefined. You may just need to plug the Mini in and then, from your PC(s), map a drive to \\EDMini\Share. If you are inclined to do some more advanced configuration, the management is all done from a browser interface. It is pretty straight forward to use. Worst case, the web interface is very well documented in the manual - which is a PDF on the installation disk. No one provides a printed manual anymore.

Mac users are not left out in the cold. You can create Mac shares as easily as Windows. A good way to share files between different Operating Systems. Since the EDMini, is an embedded Linux machine, you can access it via FTP, HTTP, or SMB from a Linux computer. If you have a Digital Media Player on your network, you can enable the Media Server functionality of the Mini to provide content to your DMP.

Basically:
If you are a home user, or even a small office, and need to share disk space among several computers, the Ether Disk Mini is a great choice. However, if you are expecting "file server" performance from a $200 device, you should, probably, spend the extra money on a server.

5 out of 5 stars Slick little box at a good price........2007-09-01

If you're a techno-buff, read the other guy's review. If, on the other hand, you're looking to share your files simply across multiple home computers, buy this drive.

Setup was very simple for me. I followed the quick setup guide (which basically says, "Before plugging in the drive, run the software and follow the prompts") and within a few minutes I was up and running. I connected it directly to my laptop first to clear off the clutter, then connected it to my wireless-G router. Each time, the Mini Disk showed up as a network drive.

Now I have one set of "My Documents" across 2 PCs and a Laptop. All my music and videos are on the Mini Disk and they play directly on any of my computers without needing to be copied onto the local hard drive. I did notice a few seconds longer to launch the videos, but they play as though they were on the local drive.

I tried the backup software for kicks and it seems to work as described, but I'm not using my Mini Disk for backups, so I don't have much experience with it.

Maybe the drive isn't fast enough to edit these files across the network (according to some other reviews), but for less than $200 you can have a good amount of storage for your multimedia and personal files.

2 out of 5 stars A Product With Problems.......2007-08-16

Review of LaCie Ether Disk Mini 500GB (edmini)

Summary

This is really a little, special-purpose Linux box. The unit seems physically very sturdy, is reasonably small, and runs cools and quiet. It has a factory-installed version of Twonky, and as a media server accessed over wired Ethernet it functioned well - for instance it served HD video encoded at up to 25Mbps CBR (that is Constant Bit Rate HDV from a Sony cam) to my Ziova CS505 media player without any visible problems (3 1/2 stars for this). The edmini's performance when writing files to it via the Ethernet cable was IMO not great - its best write speed in my testing, using a crossover cable to a 3Com on-board gigabit Ethernet on PC, was about 640MB per minute (in contrast to a Maxtor SS II, which initially gave 800MB per minute write throughput through a Netgear switch, and that I've since optimized to over 990 MB per minute; and in other testing I've moved as much as 2600MB per minute over my home network). And I found the edmini's USB2 interface to computer not at all useful - it crashed my PC several times, and when it didn't its best write performance for me was 376MB per minute - that's right, it's unstable USB interface is much slower than its own Ethernet interface (zero stars for this), and for comparison about one-fourth of the performance of an Adaptec USB disk that I connected to the same USB2 port for testing. Thus my averaged rating of 1.75 stars, rounded to 2 stars.

Other Issues and Observations

When the power adapter is plugged in but the drive is disconnected from its cord the power adapter alone consumes just under 0.2A (110V AC) that is in the neighborhood of 15 watts. When the unit is running it uses about 0.9A, about 70 watts. There is no configuration setting for any kind of sleep mode, and I saw no indication that it had any reduced power mode. So, if left on, this device would cost me about $85 per year in electricity. For comparison, my Maxtor Shared Storage II uses about 0.6A when running, and can be set to spin down the drive when idle, cutting that to 0.3A; so the Maxtor should cost about $50 per year less for me to operate.

When I enabled DHCP on the LaCie device and rebooted it, it could not find my DHCP server (nothing else on my network has that problem), and it configured itself such that it disappeared from my network entirely - and it could no longer be seen even by the LaCie configuration utility. Getting out of THAT took some doing... a "hold the button down for 15 seconds then ... and then..." reset procedure that is not in the documentation or FAQ.

Most of the somewhat limited management of this device is done via a built-in web server. Mostly it seemed painfully slow to me - enough to wonder if it was working. For those who need to know this: it does allow enabling of "guest" account with no password (required by some media players).

Several times the device simply locked up completely - I could do nothing but UNPLUG it (the power button is soft). I think it is possible this was related to having the USB cable connected, I don't recall any lock-ups that happened when it wasn't.

Even when connected to the very same port on a gigabit switch, the LaCie seemed to choose 100 or 1000 Mb connection speed at random each time it booted - and there is no configuration setting for it.

The power button is also a big blue light that blinks twice every five seconds - making placement in the HT component rack intolerable (if the unit is visible).

About That USB2 interface

To use the USB2 interface to computer, you install a driver then connect the device to a USB2 port on your PC. The device does not mount as a Mass Storage Device (the normal device class for a USB2 disk drive); instead the LaCie driver emulates a network adapter and the disk can be found in your network neighborhood. BUT this emulation uses the same host name and workgroup as the one the Ethernet interface on the LaCie unit itself is already broadcasting - so if your PC can see the edmini on the ethernet, you CANNOT access the USB2 interface at all: the edmini does show up in Device Manager and Disconnect Devices tray icon, but the node in the network tree is already occupied by the ethernet interface to the same device. You may think this sounds so strange that I must have gotten it wrong; but no, it REALLY is like that.

To top it off, the LaCie-supplied driver for XP SP1 did not actually work, it saw and mapped the drive (as long as I disconnected either the PC or the LaCie from my ethernet), but every attempt I made to access the drive failed and the driver went into a loop spiking the CPU usage to 100% every few seconds, requiring a reboot of the PC.

There is another USB2 port, for a peripheral such as a printer or external disk drive. I did not test this at all.

OS Version Support

Before I bought the edmini I noted that LaCie's web page for the product explicitly listed WinXP SP1 as "supported". I needed that support, because I wanted to use it with a PC that is at SP1 and cannot be updated due to other dependencies. But as soon as I reported that in my testing the USB driver failure was isolated to XP SP1, LaCie support told me (and here I quote by copy-and-paste): "the devices are designed around connecting to XP SP2 or 2000, SP4. There won't be any support for issues that only present themselves in SP1".

My Conclusion

This product has some problems. With the so-so write throughput over Ethernet, the surprisingly much slower USB2 interface, and LaCie's refusal to honor their word about supported OS version, I found this device unusable for my purposes - I sent it back. But the problems may not apply to all users. Its media server worked well and the unit was cool, quiet, and performed tolerably well; and so I think reasonable person might make a different decision under different conditions. Just do not expect to use the "USB2 interface" to PC.

Footnotes

Case is significant, 10MB is "ten megabytes" but 10Mb is "ten megabits".

After I wrote the bulk of this review, and actually a number of hours AFTER I told LaCie that I had given up, repacked the edmini unit and was sending it back to the retailer, they told me that they had just tested one on XP SP1 and it worked for them. I can't prove that they didn't make that test with that result, but I do find the timing very suspicious.

4 out of 5 stars Me Like.......2007-07-22

I like this product. It as another reviewer stated it is very slow over wireless when using the windows share protocol. It is ok when using FTP. The case is solid and heavy, it gives my the feeling that the drive won't cry if I drop it. I have tested the USB connection in both Windows and Linux and it works without problems.

The administration interface is nice. I think think I might use its media server capabilities. I pretty much spent the whole weekend copying all of my data to this drive. It feels good to have everything in one place.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Network Drive with UPNP.......2007-07-18

Set up was not as easy as I would have liked, however, Lacie customer support was surprising accessable by phone. I forgot what good customer support is like, and I didn't have to wait more than 2 minutes for someone to pick up the phone.

The drive works great and can easily stream HD content to a media adapter. Not sure why the other reviewer is complaining about the transfer speads. This is the Version 2 with gigbit ethernet. Typical read/write speads over a network which are not going to be as fast as USB or Firewire. Overall an excellent drive for the money.
