No mapping capability at all..........2005-07-29

Just keep in mind that if you buy this product, you will not have the capability to load any Mapsource data, or any map data at all. The unit does not come with even a rudimentary database, and although there is an optional (and riduculously overpriced) PC interface cable, you won't be able to upload anyting into the GPS unit. No street maps, no topo maps,... nada. Other comparably priced units have this capability, which seems to me to be absolutely essential if you actually want to use a GPS unit to be able to navigate, which, let's face it, is the only reason that you would buy one.

I use it when I go sking, so I see how fast I can go, I use it for biking, so I can tell how far I have gone. I can be in the middle of my two story house and still get a signal (It takes about 10 minutes though) Outside it will pick up a signal in under 30secconds. Its Great!

This GPS is a great help for any kind of GPS work you would need to do that didn't require you to be any closer than about 20 feet. Within 20 feet is is inprecise.

I've found that the altimeter needs regular calibration to be accurate as well.

Too bad it doesn't come standard with an A/C adapter. You'd think with all the money you're paying the least you would get is an A/C adapter!

Altitude profile doesn't download.......2003-01-11

I've checked this GPS out in the toughest test and I guess you get what you pay for, this model can display the profile for up to 25 miles on the screen , but when you download the data the profile is very hard to re create on the PC, I've tried using several kinds of download software and then Harvard Graphics or excel , with the same result, a horizontal scale problem.

Every check I have made on its accuracy shows no problem , just this end of the line processing, perhaps I'm the only user trying to print off the profile

I am an avid hunter,before buyýng my gps a did an extencýve search for the best suited one for my needs.there is no question
that the eTrex Summit has all I ask.the electronic compass is the
most important future.When I hunt I always go deep in the forest.
I used to have some terrible lost instances,I tell you getting lost in deep forest is no joke at all.now with my summit in my pocket I am the kýng of forests.the poiter page future is also extra advantage the summit has.Any hunter or camper should own one for hýs or her securýtýy.

This is a very nice case, the gps can be used easily without even taking it out of the case.This is excellant protection from scratches,dirt, moisture etc.Velcro holds the case closed and keeps it snug enough to keep out dirt,is very conveniant if you want to take the gps out easily.

I recently ordered this along with my new Garmin eTrex Venture CX. It was an excellent purchase. It clips nicely on my pockets, backpack, and it fits nicely on "curtains" of commercial airliners (most airlines allow you to use GPS receivers once you reach cruising altitude). I can't imagine using my GPS without this case.

My only complaint is that it's hard to see the screen without the back light on in some glare situations.

Overall a good protective cover. My only gripe is the dust/dirt/whatever that gets inside through the large openings at the top. You just have to take the unit out of the case from time to time to clean off the screen, otherwise it's working great.

Great result, bad description.......2007-09-23

Using the GPS on my MTB handlebar is really a treat. I've used the GPS in a jersey pocket, but then you need to stop occasionally to see where you are at. Having it available at all times on the handlebar is really an entirely different experience - you can just glance down, see upcoming turns, etc. Very sturdy - no problems even over rough rocky terrain.

On the down side, the back included doesn't fit GPS units with SD cards. You use your existing back and the clip that came with it to attach to the handlebar mount. I would have been better off buying just the mount without the back, but the description didn't make that obvious.

This bicycle mount works great with the Garmin e-trex vista. I did order a second mount for my ATV so that I didn't have to keep swapping my mount from my mountain bike to the ATV. It would be nice if they came up with a system where you didn't have to remove a screw to take the mount off.

Okay, but definitely could use improvement.......2007-08-19

I bought this to mount my eTrex on my road bike. It will mount securely onto handlebars up to 1" diameter- unfortunately, most handlebars on modern road bikes are far thicker. My handlebars flare in the middle where they sit in the stem, and I was able to move the mount towards the outside of the bars where the diameter drops down to 1", but in this position it takes up some of the space where I like to rest my hands, forcing me to make a slight adjustment to my riding position. I would like to see a mount like current bike computers and lighting systems use - able to fit on a wider variety of tubing.

The mount positions the GPS towards the rear of the handlebars, encroaching on your cockpit space. This is fine when I'm sitting, but when I am sprinting or climbing out of the saddle I have to be careful not to hit the GPS with my thigh. A more forward position would be appreciated. And a more forward position would keep it out of the way of my dripping sweat. :)

Finally, a quick release mount would make it far easier to switch it between bicycles, as I would like to do.

Overall, this mount has pretty severe limitations for me, but it will probably work fine for a recreational rider. I will try to rig something that will better suit my riding style.

I bought this mount for my street bike, and it works well, but it doesnt seem to be the ticket for off-road use...excesive vibration would only be amplified because of it design. If your an ATVer, off-road moter cyclist, or extreme mountain biker, you might want to look at something more rugged.

and was very easy to install. However, it may have been better to use a clip-type attachment rather than a screw to allow for easy mobility between placements. Once it's on your bike, that's where it's staying; would be nice just to unclip, attach to an oar, then back on the bike.
