Garmin Forerunner 201 Wrist-Mounted GPS Navigator and Personal Training Device
Manufacturer: Garmin ProductGroup: CE Binding: Electronics Similar Items:
Accessories:
Product Features:
ASIN: B0000CFYCH |
Product Description
Garmin Forerunner 201 GPS Training Assistant - The Forerunner 201 offers athletes an easy-to-read display, ergonomic wristband, and integrated GPS sensor that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data. It's a compact, lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. The Forerunner 201 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price. Working out with the Forerunner 201 means you're never alone in your personal training, because the unit provides a Virtual Partner. This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind. Includes - Wrist strap, AC ChargerAmazon.com Review
Combining powerful performance-tracking features with a GPS receiver, the Garmin Forerunner 201 offers runners and hikers a unique way to track their exercise regimens and goals. Unlike its main competitor, Timex's BodyLink sport monitoring system, the Forerunner 201 integrates the GPS receiver into a single body (BodyLink has separate housings for watch and GPS).
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The large display--with equally large, easy-to-read characters--helps you avoid having to squint at the readout. Just a quick glance at your numbers and you'll maintain your training concentration. The six rubber buttons on the front of the chassis are easy to access (unless you're wearing bulky gloves). I easily got the promised 13 hours out of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. At the end of the day, I'd just recharge it for around two hours and it would be ready for me the next morning.
While this is definitely a workable GPS receiver, the Forerunner is slim on overall GPS features--which is not to its detriment (think of it as a performance monitor with a dash of GPS). That said, the Forerunner was able to pick up a GPS signal just about wherever I went outside (though it had very slight hiccups in the center of downtown). But if you're looking for a full-fledged tracking device, the Forerunner isn't for you. (You'll want to start with a basic GPS unit like Garmin's eTrex.)
The Forerunner 201 has a variety of helpful tracking, monitoring, and navigational features. The History function enables you to view your workout statistics broken down by individual days, cumulative weeks, or your entire workout history (if you track different workouts during the same day, they'll be broken out as different laps). You can even view a map of your route. And much like other GPS units, you can save waypoints (called "locations" in Forerunner parlance) to mark the coordinates of a place you want to return to later.
Most interesting is the Virtual Partner mode, which enables you to set goals for a workout which will then be completed by a digital character displayed on the Forerunner's screen. You can then see how far off the time, pace, or distance you are of your virtual training buddy's; your digital character even stops when you do (though the buddy keeps on going). I found that, unless you've got a good idea as to your pace or distance, you'll have a couple of trial-and-error training sessions to get in sync with your buddy. I cut short my first attempt after my buddy got so far ahead of me that he disappeared off the screen (which I'd like to believe was not due to my woeful pace).
I was disappointed at not having the LogBook software, which enables you to keep a journal of your exercise activities (it was not available at the time of this test). But overall, the Forerunner 201 is a very useful exercise-monitoring system that will be prized by anyone involved in serious physical training. --Agen G.N. Schmitz
Auto Menu: Timer pauses when you stop running. Auto lap logs your performance over a predetermined distance. |
History: Review training history by day or week. |
Map: Navigate back to the start or to a stored location. |
Virtual Partner: Set time, pace, and distance goals, and train with a "virtual partner." |

Amazon.com Product Description
Finally, an alternative to awkward pedometers and cycling computers. The Forerunner 201 offers athletes an easy-to-read display and integrated GPS satellite receiver that provides precise speed, distance, and pace data--all in one compact unit that straps to your wrist. It's a lightweight, accurate training assistant with performance tracking, auto-lap, auto-pause and more. And because it is a high quality Garmin GPS device, you get many of the features GPS users have come to rely on, such as precise latitude, longitude, altitude data. Choose either the 201 model for rechargeable power or the 101 if you prefer to use 2 AAA batteries. The Forerunner 201 is easy to use right out of the box and delivers the benefits of GPS technology at an affordable price.
To please folks who are passionate about their exercise and training, Garmin has added something special to the Forerunner 201 called the Virtual Partner. The feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.
Almost as important as the training device itself are the accessories to integrate it with your active lifestyle. If you're into cycling, the best way to keep an eye on your GPS while you ride is with a bike mount bracket that straps to the handlebars of your bike, motorcycle, or whatever you're traveling with for easy viewing.

Excellent Training Tool.......2007-09-26
I was looking for a GPS training/pedometer device to help me get in shape for a 1/2 marathon coming up. I checked at our local Sports Authority store and found this one for about $200. When I saw the same one on Amazon for just over $100 I got excited! I love this thing. It is easy to use, sets up training programs for you, and will even navigate you back to your starting location if you get lost on a run/walk. Yes it's great for walking as well as running. The model below this is not rechargeable which was a big selling factor. The model above this is the same but it has the heartrate monitor. This is an excellent buy and an excellent training tool. I highly recommend it.
Garmin GPS.......2007-09-01
Awesome - bought Nov 2004 and it still has the 1st mile i ever ran (11/26/04). Screen is larger and easier on the old eyes to see than the newer models. Only thing i couldn't do was get it to download into my computer. But, would buy this same model again.
My Garmin GPS.......2007-09-01
This gadget is awesome! I am still learning about it but am very impressed!
Great for Jogging and Training.......2007-08-04
I purchased the 201 two years ago because I was tired of 'guessing' how far my runs were or checking with my bike. The 201 perfectly fits my needs and works as advertised. Once fully charged the battery lasts a real 14 hours which is great for taking it on trips. The display is large, easy to read, and allows you to customize it subscreens. You really don't notice it on your wrist when jogging.
So why 4 stars? It does lose its signal from time to time when there is tree cover, the charger is like a brick for know good reason, there is no case for traveling, and the serial interface is a dated.
For the money it is hard to beat this as a GPS for jogging.
This Garmin GPS is great.......2007-08-04
This is the third Garmin I have, and I use it for run, when I ride the car or travel and also when I sail. And after I have a log for every place I was and also I can import in Google Earth to see the tracks.

Customer Reviews:
5 Stars isn't enough! This is a great backpack.......2007-09-13
I replaced an old worn out backpack with this Maxxum Swiss Gear bag and now I'm the envy of the office.
The features are countless and well-thought-out.
1. Lots and lots of pockets for storage, and a nifty open pocket into which you can stuff a sweater or light jacket.
2. The laptop pocket is supported above the floor of the pack, so no worries about your precious cargo hitting the floor and cracking the case. Excellent design on that point. My Dell Latitude D610 (15.4") easily fits this pocket, so no worries there.
3. The backpack is light weight and easy to slip on. The chest strap is available if you suddenly have to run for your flight!
4. The padding against your back is brilliant! No more sweaty backs from lugging an overly clingy backpack through a hot humid airport.
5. Sturdy zippers and straps. This bad boy is very well made.
6. Style and color too. It doesn't look like a laptop backpack, so no "red flag" to thieves in airports that say "Hey, steal me!"
7. I love this feature--it has a floor support that enables the bag to stand up all by itself. No more leaning against the wall. Nice!
I am more than extremely pleased with this bag. I've contacted my local IT department and suggested it as the "defacto" standard when people ask for a laptop bag. At $53 it's a super bargain.
sooo many pockets!.......2007-08-28
i bought this pack after looking casually for several months for a backpack to carry my laptop, and eventually lots of heavy law books. i was initially priced out of this bag at Staples, and couldnt find the color i wanted anyway, but found it on Amazon for about $20 less. it has an incredible amount of compartments, pockets, slots, etc. the 'book pocket' is really roomy, easily fits a 4" binder, a 3" stack of papers, and a harry potter book. incredible. the laptop pocket is nicely padded, my 15.4" laptop is pretty snug in there though. the straps and padding on the back are a big plus. also, you can stand the pack up on the floor without support. never considered how much i would enjoy that feature. i would definitely purchase this product again for myself, and for anyone who is considering a bag for transporting a laptop and lots of school or work documents/books.
Great bag.......2007-08-27
I recently bought a 15.4" laptop and was then looking around for my first laptop bag. I went to a ton of stores that sold computer bags, and I soon found that the Swiss Gear bags by Wenger were the best looking to me and seemed to have the most functionality. The prices were probably mid level, there were always much simpler and cheaper bags at all the stores. This bag has the look of being well made and thoughtfully designed. I was nervous my laptop wouldn't fit since it was at the recommened maximum latop size, but my 15.4" fits in the bag just fine, though if it was any bigger I think I would have a problem.
I love this bag and all it's pockets and compartments in the bag. I get a lot of compliments as well. Also worth noting, the cushioning on the parts of the backpack that come into contact with your back are awesome.
Maxxum Swiss Gear Backpack.......2007-08-24
Even though the backpack is big compared to a normal backpack, it's a really nice backpack with plenty of room for my laptop and other things.
Very spacious, very good looking, cheap........2007-08-23
This is a good notebook backpack, it's no so expensive and it comes with the Swiss Army seal and proof of good products, I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
The Swiss really make a solid product.......2007-09-23
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a pocket knife, a bag, or a clock; the Swiss really do know how to make a very solid product.
This backpack accomodated my 17" widescreen desktop replacement (which is far thicker than most laptops) with ease. However, I was extremely amazed when I could also fit my 15" widescreen notebook, complete with two brick power supplies, two mice and patch cables!
The Pegasus is extremely comfortable, with shock absorbing straps--having had over 25lbs of laptops and PSUs inside, I was expecting some loss of circulation in my arms, I was pleasantly surprised when I could still feel my fingers after 30 minutes of wear.
Good Gear.......2007-09-21
I needed a pack that would fit a Dell M-90, a pretty large 17" laptop. The options were fairly limited and I decided to try the Pegasus. It has turned out to be an excellent choice. I have taken it on several long trips. It has proven versatile, easy to carry, either wearing it as a backpack or carrying by the top handle. The pockets give easy, quick and convenient access to contents, so I use it for my tickets, passport, etc. It easily holds and provides good protection for the M90 with room left over for accessories, files, books, etc. Highly recommend if you need a bag to carry a 17" laptop.
Good choice, if you really need a 17" laptop..........2007-09-20
On the whole, the Pegasus is a high-quality bag;, especially if you can get it for a good price (I paid $60 for mine). If you can deal with the few downsides (see Cons below), then I highly recommend it.
Pros:
-Feels very sturdy and secure; from the top handle (thick rubber grip over plastic tube over steel cable) to the bottom (rubberized base that keeps it standing up on its own, at least most of the time), it feels well-built and able to withstand some punishment while keeping your gear safe.
-Comfortable; the padded straps are able to keep it from hurting your shoulders, despite carrying a big laptop, accessories, and a couple books.
-Looks good; while practically panel and zipper bears the Swiss cross (there's 22 of them in total), making you a bit of a walking advertisement, it still looks much more sleek and professional than most other laptop backpacks. Of course, if looks are your primary concern, a leather briefcase-style bag would probably be superior, but the Pegasus definitely gives a good compromise between utility and looks.
Cons
-Capacity: while any bag that can carry a 17" laptop pretty much by definition has a fair amount of space, the Pegasus isn't that impressive in how much it can carry. As a university student, I occasionally have to choose between carrying the laptop and being able to carry more than two books and a notebook or two. I probably wouldn't want to travel with it as a carry-on, either. If you're just looking to carry a laptop and a few other things (power brick, cables, mouse, a few thin books and notebooks or a change of clothes), it'll work great. If you need to carry more on a regular basis, something bigger will fit the bill better.
-Not all 17" laptops will fit into the inner sleeve in the laptop compartment; my Dell Inspiron 1720 will only fit if I remove the battery. While it fits in the laptop compartment, which is still pretty secure, the extra sleeve/pouch just takes up space for me.
-Side pockets don't have much room for water bottles--you definitely can't fit a Nalgene in there.
Comfortable and sturdy!.......2007-09-07
I have been using the Pegasus for my Dell E1705; a 17" widescreen. All zippers work beautifully, and the stitching is very clean. The padding makes it quite comfortable to tote this large laptop ANYWHERE! Stylistically it is very clean, and due to its color choices it does not show light dirt.
My only concern is a lack of padding where the backpack covers the top corners of the laptop (when oriented in the bag). Essentially, the compartment's zipper runs along the side and top corners.
As a backpack, in general, there is ample room to stash whatever you may need to carry. I was satisfied with my purchase.
Great backpack... does not fit all 17" laptops........2007-09-04
I bought this backpack primarily to take my HP dv9000 17" laptop around campus. The first thing I noticed about this bag was how sturdy the material and construction appears. Small attention to detail, such as how the straps are sewn onto the bag using a weight-distributing attachment, shows that this thing is made to handle a load. I especially liked how the main handle on this bag is laminated threaded cable riveted into the top of the book bag. Once again, sturdy.
My main issue with this bag, however, is that it doesn't fit my laptop. My laptop will fit in the bag, however trying to zip it up is a different story. The edges of the laptop are very snug against the zippers, and deform the case. My beautiful dv9000's finish got a tiny scratch from the zipper, so I didn't try it again. I instead ordered a Merax sleeve to put around the laptop, but now it will not fit inside the dedicated laptop compartment. It will, however, fit into the bottom of the bag, outside of the laptop compartment, and close fine, even with the sleeve on. I wouldn't consider this a fix, since one of the primary purposes of the bag's laptop compartment is to lift the computer up off the bottom of the backpack so that it is protected from the ground.
I decided not to return the bag because I don't intend on lugging my behemoth of a computer around campus too much, and it fits my older, smaller 15.4 in Compaq perfectly. Also, I fell in love with the bag when I first saw it, so I couldn't get rid of it.
A little information about the bag to supplement the info provided by Amazon's description:
What is referred to, I believe, as the "quick pocket" is a zippered pocket on the front of the bag containing an elastic mesh pocket, a velcro sleeve for a swiss army knife (nice touch), keyring hook, and a few other small pockets. There is also a zippered pouch inside this pocket, large enough for, say, a TI-89 calculator to fit in.
Above the quick pocket is what must be the mp3 pouch. This zippered compartment is only a few inches deep and contains a pouch in which to place an iPod, held in with a velcro strap. I have a Zune, and though it fits into the velcro pouch without its leather case, it does not with the case on. The entire pouch is plenty big enough, though, to put the Zune and my headphones case (an Altoids tin) in. There is no hole to thread headphones out of.
The first main compartment runs the entire height of the bag. On either side (on the front wall and the back) there are pockets to put things in, which run the entire width of the pack.
The second main compartment is designed to hold the laptop. In it there is a mesh elastic pouch on the front wall, and a padded laptop compartment on the back, which is suspended from the bottom of the bag. There is an elastic strap which snaps into place and holds the computer snug. The bottom of the bag is padded as well and protected by rubber on the exterior.
On either side of the bag are zippered pockets to put things in, with elastic mesh water bottle holders on the outsides.
The back of the bag is covered with several foam pads which are actually more comfortable than gimmicky. The straps also have this padding and a "shock absorption" feature where the strap adjustments have a little bit of slack in them. I don't really notice a difference. A chest strap runs across to connect the two shoulder straps. It cannot be removed without cutting.
There is a nice utility zip-up pouch included which I find useful for stashing all the cables that I need for my laptop.
Also, I've used this bag several times on vacations. I have even packed my clothes in for a weekend trip, along with my laptop and accessories, and I think I could've fit more in.
All in all, this is a great bag, which I am sure you can tell by my enthusiasm. Otherwise, I would not have written a several page review, right?

I was a little skeptical on buying this bag, but I went on gut instinct and a little faith and went ahead and bought it.
This bag exceeded all expectations. The shoulder straps are extremely comfortable and I am able to fit almost anything in the bag. I definitely have labelled this bag a man-bag because I have it with me anywhere.
There are so many compartments. The exterior is breathable.

Great every day bag.......2007-09-12
Bought this to tote my laptop and files back and forth to work. It is a perfect size. The center section is so large I can fit my LLBean lunchbag in it instead of carrying it separately. This is an excellent backpack, especially for the price. It is comfortable with large storage pockets and it is stylish too.
I like it.......2007-08-18
I'm extremely pleased with this backpack. I got a good deal for it. And out of my expectation, it arrived within only 3 days of my order with free super saving. The first thing I like is its design. Unlike many other computer backpacks, it's not too dull for a woman. It also has many pockets and enough space so that I can organize my stuff well. The straps are comfortable. They tend to carry the weight away. This backpack can be even better if there are additional straps around the waist and an earphone hole.

What a Piece of Junk.......2007-05-06
I've had a pair of the Cobra GMRS LI 6000-2 WX VP 2 Way Radios with which I was totally satisfied. When my wife and I bought mountain bikes we found the radios difficult to use while riding so I bought a pair of the earbud headsets. They are TOTALLY USELESS. The earpiece will not stay in the ear. Any kind of head motion at all and it falls out. This is as useless an accessory as I've ever purchased. Don't waste your money.

The only earpiece I've found that works as a silent communicator with the Cobra walkie-talkie devices. Any store in my area, which includes Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, anyone who actually carries the Cobra device, doesn't carry the correct earpiece that allows you to communicate without using the speaker/mic on the unit.
I work with a small theater group that requires whisper communication. I would have preferred an actual headset. In lieu of finding a headset I found this earbud that has a mic/switch built into the cord. The switch is the key to 'send', same as the key on the walkie-talkie. Earbud hangs in the ear and you hold the tiny switch/mic in your fingers, raise it to your mouth to speak. You do NOT use the keying device on the Cobra to speak. Using the clip on the walkie-talkie to attach to the belt is OK so long as you don't bump into something that changes the channel. There may be a lockout for the channel selector - haven't bothered to look for the config in the manual.
I've not tried to use it in regular open air application as in hiking outdoors, etc., when I wouldn't expect to raise the mic to my mouth to speak. Don't think it's an issue in that it is sensitive enough in whisper that in open air I expect it to work OK without raising, though that is the instinctive thing to do when holding the switch.

Yamaha RGA-10 7-Watt Guitar Amplifier
Amazon.com Product Description
Sharpen your chops without shelling out hundreds of dollars for a full-fledged amplifier with this Yamaha RGA-10 practice guitar amp. Ideal for both new players and practicing professionals, the compact 7-watt amp carries easily, so you can toss it into the trunk for vacations or haul it into the basement without needing a forklift. Meanwhile, its 4-inch speaker--while not as robust as the speakers in larger amps--still pumps out solid sound. The device includes volume, treble, bass, and midrange controls, in addition to a headphone jack that lets you practice in private without disturbing others. In addition, the exterior is durable and attractive, with a faux leather material covering the particleboard construction.
The RGA-10 is a factory reconditioned product, meaning it was returned to the manufacturer and restored to like-new condition.

Pleased.......2005-09-30
I don't know much about amplifiers but am very happy with the product. When I got it I thought it would have been bigger but my son seems satisfied. It's small enough to carry around easily and it gives a great sound.
BIg sound for a small amp.......2005-02-19
I'll admit, I had a few doubts about this amp, being factory reconditioned and only a 4" speaker, but I was blown away when I plugged my Samick strat-clone into it. The tone really slices right through, loud and clear. Pretty well rounded, it provides a reasonable semblance of 80's Metallica with the drive on, the treble cranked, and the bass choked off. Put the bass and treble somewhere toward the middle for a nice full-bodied rough bluesy sound a'la ZZ Top. You could even dial up something like the EVH "brown sound!"
Can't beat it for the price!.......2005-01-13
Amazon was clearing these out for less than $30, so I couldn't possibly resist! Amazon calls this a 7-watt amp. Another reviewer said it was 10 watts, but that seemed unlikely since the back panel shows that it consumes 10 watts of electricity. And, disappointingly, there was no user's manual included to look up the specs in. So I put a meter across the speaker terminals and saw about 5.7 volts AC into 4 ohms. That works out to just over 8 watts, which makes sense because the speaker is rated to handle 8W. In any case it's plenty loud to fill a room and wake up your housemates.
With a mere 4" speaker you are not going to get "Gods of Thunder" lows, but it's a lot easier to tote around than my larger amp when the car is full of other stuff. Hey, it's a practice amp, not a concert amp! The product description says it has a midrange control, which it doesn't, just volume, treble and bass, plus a drive switch for that "dirty" sound that blues and hard rock require. It has a headphone jack but no CD player input for playalong.
Construction is similar to that of larger amps, wood (particle board) cabinet covered with leather-look vinyl, with plastic corners and rubber feet, and a professional look and feel. The cabinet is open-backed for storage of power cord and guitar cable. The amp has a steel chassis and a heavy-duty power cord with three-prong plug. If you're ever stuck somewhere with nothing to plug your guitar into, you'll wish you had this.
not bad for the money.......2004-11-25
i tried 1 of these at the local guitar store they are 10 watt not 7 thats why its called rga 10 duh and it says 10 watt on the amp also they dont list its a 2 channel amp with distortion so this amps much better than they list its loud for a 10 watt amp and the distortion sounds nice not real heavy but no hums or hisses and plenty heavy enough for acdc guns n roses or black sabbath covers if u need more gain u can buy a pedal for the price this amps a steal

one of the reasons that I bought this bag was to fit my new toshiba 17 inch. does not fit at all. Also, it's not very roomy. I had to return it. Just didn't work for my laptop.
Nice Bag!.......2007-02-08
I recently purchased this SwissGear bag and love it! I use it daily, and the one thing I don't keep in it is my laptop. It's extremely well rounded with a lot of nice features, and seems very sturdy. I get a lot of positive comments about the bag's style and design.

Amazon.com Review
Garmin's eTrex Venture GPS receiver offers a host of track- and path-related programs and is surprisingly easy to use. Its size and design make it comfortable to use one-handed, and its automatic tracking feature and ability to download maps from optional CD-ROMs make it an excellent navigation tool.

The Garmin eTrex Venture provides easy-to-use GPS navigation in the palm of your hand. View larger. |
Roughly the size and shape of a cell phone, the Venture has six buttons that are easily accessible by thumb and forefinger. The Power, Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Find buttons are along the side, with the big-daddy navigation button (a directional click-button akin to a thumb-operated joystick) on the front above the screen. The side buttons are stiff enough that it's nearly impossible to accidentally push one. However, we found the navigation button to be a bit too stiff, which caused us several errors in entering waypoints.
Text was very easy to read--highlights are discernible and menu bars and clickable objects are well defined. The unit also has an excellent backlight, which illuminates the whole screen with a white light, giving excellent contrast and viewing capability at night.
The Venture's interface is split into five different pages, each providing different functions. The main menu page gives you access to your saved routes and tracks, as well as setup for using WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception, unit measurement, time, and display. These are all quickly rotated through with the click of the Page button on the right-hand side of the unit.
The map page displays the basemap included with the Venture, and for outdoor excursions it provides all the basics you'll need. It automatically tracks your movements and you can save individual tracks for later viewing. The map is zoomable from 500 miles to 20 feet depending on your preferences. You can place waypoints and places of interest on the map and name and change the icons of each to create your own personalized maps. If you decide you want to go somewhere, press the Find button and you'll get quick access to waypoints, your favorites list, and nearby cities.
The Venture features 1 MB of memory for downloading points-of-interest data--including lodging, business services, banks, and more--from optional CD-ROMs via the included PC cable. Unfortunately, for more detailed mapping you'll need to look to the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista, both of which have larger memory capacities and the ability to download detailed maps.
Reception was, of course, best outside on a clear day, but the Venture retained most of its functionality under limited cover like small buildings or thick trees.
All in all, the Garmin eTrex Venture is a nifty little GPS tool and is ready to roll for your outdoor adventure. However, if you're looking to use more detailed map data with your GPS, the Garmin eTrex Vista or Legend would be a better choice. --Matt Deffer

Garmin ETrex.......2007-05-15
Ordered for the telecom crew to use. Seems to be working great.
Attention all farmers and ranchers.......2006-09-30
I have used GPS for years for flying to driving, but a lumber man turned me on to this inexpensive gadget as an invaluable tool for calculating acreage for fertilization or liming of fields. Turn it on, drive around the perimeter of the field you wish to measure, hit the button and it tells you exactly the acreage inside the area. You will pay for it the first time you use it. You will never order more or less than needed again.
Used only a few of its features, but it performed great.......2005-12-06
I bought the Venture back in the summer of 2003 and I was never let down by it. At that time the speedometer on my car went out and as a cheaper alternative to buying the new, expensive gauge cluster for my car, I bought this GPS with a dashboard mount. So this product was used literally every day, sometimes several times a day, and for several hours a day for over 2 years.
First of all, I really only use it in navigation mode with the time, cardinal direction, and the speed being displayed, so I cannot comment an much of the other features of the unit. I have done some minor geocaching with it though, and it performed great for that, although it is tedious to enter in lat. and long. coordinates directly into the unit. I will say that using it as often as I do in my car, it is amazing. To be honest, I did not expect it to last this long. I have never had much trouble with tree cover causing a lost signal, but it does happen on occasion.
From the beginning I used rechargeable batteries and the unit has surprisngly long battery life, even with the backlight on. I replace the batteries about once every week or two, but remember, its on for up to a few hours a day.
All in all, this is a great GPS. Again, I can't vouch for many of its features, but I can vouch for its long life and consistant operation. I have gotten hundreds, if not thousands of hours of use out of this and it has yet to let me down.
Great GPS receiver for basic hiking and backpacking........2004-12-29
I returned a Cobra GPS 100 and upgraded to the eTrex Venture for the extra money. What a difference only a few dollars more can make! this is my first GPS unit ever, and I had no problems picking everything up within a day.
For starters, it only took about two minutes to locate a satellite for the first time (supposed to take up to five) and averages about 30 seconds to locate one in general. The screen resolution is easy to read and the options for customizing the map make it even easier if you have trouble reading small text. The waypoint markers are easy to define and edit. The compass seems to be very quick in picking up your movements. Almost everything is customizable giving you endless options for your specific use for the GPS unit. The unit is comfortable in the hand, although some of the buttons are a little stiff at first.
My satellite reception is excellent. I took it hiking in 40°F rain and hail (obviously very overcast) and only lost reception once while walking under heavy tree cover. On the way home I placed it on the dashboard and it tracked me 33 miles home without losing reception once. This was in 500 ft visibility fog on a one lane curvy mountain road. This unit definitely gets the job done.
My only gripes are there's no beep or sound when it loses reception and you have to press enter to acknowledge you have lost reception, thus it begins tracking you again. So if you hike by turning the unit on and placing it in your backpack, or even on your belt, you could have lost reception and not known it, and because you haven't acknowledged the unit, it's not tracking you anymore (as far as I can tell).
Other than that, this unit works perfect for getting you in and out of areas where there's no trails and finding that perfect spot to spend the night or fish and hunt.
Just OK, or maybe a bit less than that........2004-10-21
This was a mild disappointment. It is the second Garmin product that fails me, I also owned a Pilot II, whose firmware at some point lost its marbles, and now it displays only some pages and refuses to get a GPS fix.
The Venture had, almost from the beginning, a problem with the display, which flickered and became alternatively all black or white, or lost some horizontal lines, creating a nice "blinds" effect.
The problem normally went away by moderate slapping. But it is not a nice start.
Second point: the battery contacts are sub-quality, you just need to shake the unit a little and the electrodes lose contact with the battery, causing the unit to switch off.
Third: when the memory is fairly full, the operating system goes in overload mode, sometimes it does not manage to acquire the user input, and you find yourself trying to use the buttons without actually managing to do nothing. Erase the memory and the problem disappears.
Four: a few leaves overhead and you lose the fix, the sensitivity and selectivity is not great.
Maybe I had a bad firmware, who knows, but I don't want to change my firmware every month, I expect the original firmware to be OK for a while.
I just bought a Magellan, I'm curious to see if it's better or worse.
