Product Description

The Handspring Visor handheld is the original expandable handheld computer that lets you instantly turn an organizer into a digital camera, music player, or even a phone. It comes with a sufficient amount of RAM so you have plenty of room to store all your addresses and appointments. But what makes it really special is its unique Springboard expansion slot, which lets you snap in a wide range of hardware and software modules and turn your Visor into whatever you want it to be. Best of all, it's plug-and-play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works!

Amazon.com Product Description

The Handspring Visor connected organizer is all you'll need to store thousands of names, addresses, appointments, memos, to-do items, expense items, and e-mail. Based on the popular Palm OS, the Handspring Visor is fully compatible with thousands of Palm Computing platform applications. Plus, Handspring has added features to the Palm OS like an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and built-in floating-point math support.

The Visor offers a fast USB connection, making synchronizing your PC or Mac simple. Exchange of information between your hand-held and PC occurs with the touch of a button. HotSync technology ensures all your data is backed up and enables significantly faster synchronization with USB support than the normal serial connection. (An optional serial cradle is available.)

The Handspring Visor also stores 6,000 addresses, 5 years of appointments, 1,500 to-do items, 1,500 memos, and 200 e-mail messages. This model includes support for Lotus cc:Mail, Microsoft Outlook, and Qualcomm Eudora. Synchronization software for AOL, Lotus Notes, Netscape Communicator, and POP3 mail is sold separately.

The Handspring Visor is fully expandable with an external expansion slot that lets you add software and hardware modules (called Springboard modules) in a snap. Modules like an MP3 player, pager, modem, GPS receiver, or video game can be added to make an entirely new device.

The Handspring Visor comes with a HotSync cradle, stylus, Palm Desktop software (Windows and Mac), software link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only), and 2 AAA batteries.

The Visor is covered by a one-year warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive PDA for someone who wants somethign simple........2007-09-22

This PDA is great for the user who doesn't need all the fancy features and superfluous accessories and gadgets and functions that may make a PDA seem too cluttered. It includes the basic features like memo, to-do, contacts, calendar, calculator, etc. It is light and MAY include a keyboard that allows the user to type long memos or appointments quickly. It uses AAA batteries which avoids having those wires and cords for recharging which may take a while for other PDAs.

5 out of 5 stars MY FIRST PDA.......2005-08-18

This was my pest pda i ever got o and you HAVE to back up alot it WILL die and you have to leave the batters out for about an hour put new batts can put olds the net day thought but you WILL lose all your data so back up outher wise you will have nothing.I gave it 5 stars because it has never has compleatly died on me. Like this coputer or my outher palms. My grandafather gave me this one because he got a blue one with 6 mgs of ram. Also it uses AAAs so I dont have to buy the recharble batts that are about 40.99 and amost caust as almost as much as the pda.I us Ni-cd Ni-mh AAAs because I can recharge tham and they are not 40.99 for a batt that will only last about a year.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible experience with my Visor..........2004-08-15

I had the same problem that reviewer Mr. McCoy had. I recieved my Visor and it came with batteries. I turned it on and at some point during the setup process the Visor shut down. When I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't. Resets (soft and hard) did nothing. I changed out the batteries with brand new ones. The Visor came on and within half an hour, it shut down again. Not allowing the SAME batteries to be used. I went through 3 sets of brand new batteries and this happened every time. The longest my Visor has stayed on has been 30 minutes or less.

I also had a problem where I would turn it on and then turn it off. Once it was turned off, I couldn't use the same batteries again. It wouldn't turn back on until I used a new set. I have heard many many people have the same kind of issue with this and the best thing I can say, is listen to the people who are encountering this kind of problem. They are not alone with this issue!! There appears to be a flaw in a bulk amount of these Visors.

2 out of 5 stars Data Lost Twice; doesn't want it's batteries changed.......2003-06-27

I was so happy to see that I wasn't the only person who had problems with this device. I love it's capabilities, but have lost data twice: first time I received a change battery warning, so changed batteries, and zap! everything gone.Contacted Handspring, (what a messy website)and lots of words came back, but were they really listening? Second time, I decided to replace batteries long before they needed it, just in case. Data gone. I did the change very fast, less than a minute as advised. I want a refund/repair or new device, but can't really get through to them. I've cooled down somewhat (they depend on that, I imagine) but surprise! I'm buying a new PDA, and it won't be one of theirs! Here I am, researching other brands.

1 out of 5 stars Works great -- when it works at all.......2002-10-26

Bought mine in September, 2000, just a few months after it was released, so I believe I got one of the early versions. Wonderful product, at first. Had no problems and loved the external keyboard. But a few months later, something strange happened: I would turn it off (or it would shut down on its own), and when I turned it on again a few days later, the batteries would be dead! All information LOST. Batteries would have to be changed. This happened several times, and I finally contacted Handspring before the warranty was expired. Thankfully, they replaced my unit.

But it happened again. And again, and again, and again. The batteries did not go dead from overuse, rather something inside the unit continued to draw power even after it was supposed to be powered off. Not a good thing for those of us who synch infrequently!

After another year of this (and about a dozen batteries), I called Handspring and demanded they replace this with a different model, because this is clearly a design flaw. They wouldn't do anything. One year warranty, that's it. Done. No more soup for you! I guess they expect you to buy a new Visor every year!! Shouldn't this thing last me at least five????

I won't buy another Handspring. I won't even recommend them to other people. It's possible I got unlucky twice, but if the company isn't going to stand behind their product, I'll buy something else.

It may also be a lot to ask to have the product replaced outside of the warranty, but if this happens with every unit, shouldn't Handspring recognize there's a mistake and recall these units?

Amazon.com Review

The Handspring Visor Deluxe is the hot new handheld that runs the popular Palm OS, so it's compatible with thousands of existing applications. It's also expandable with Springboard modules that can add extra memory or a modem, or transform your Visor into an MP3 player, video game, GPS receiver, and more. Plus, its fast-synchronizing USB connection is compatible with both the PC and Macintosh.

To set up the Handspring Visor Deluxe, we followed the Getting Started instructions printed on the software CD-ROM case, inserting the batteries, calibrating the touch screen, entering the date and time, connecting the included USB cradle to our PC (an optional serial cradle is available), installing the desktop synchronization software, and synchronizing the Visor with our PC. The entire setup process was straightforward and intuitive, requiring only about five minutes.

Fans of Palm Computing's Palm III line of connected organizers will have no difficulty using the Visor, as it runs on a licensed version of the Palm OS. All the popular Palm personal information management (PIM) applications are included and work exactly the same way as they do on the Palm. The Visor also uses Palm's Graffiti handwriting recognition system for text entry, which takes only a few minutes to learn and a few hours of practice to master. Handspring has added to the Palm OS an advanced date book, calculator, world clock, and support for floating-point math.

The Visor Deluxe comes with 8 MB of RAM, providing plenty of room for thousands of addresses, to-do items, and memos; hundreds of e-mail messages; and several years of appointments. It also includes a USB synchronization cradle, two AAA batteries, a stick-on Graffiti "cheat sheet," a leather slip case, a stylus, a Handspring logo decal, a Quick Reference Guide, inserts describing accessories and cases, and a software CD-ROM. The CD-ROM includes Palm Desktop Software 3.01, a software link to Microsoft Outlook, and the full-length User's Guide. However, the Visor Deluxe does not come with an AC adapter.

Using the Visor was intuitive and fun, just like the Palm III series organizers that it's based on. However, unlike the Palm, the Visor has an easily accessible expansion port that supports Springboard modules. For our tests, we installed a modem module, an 8 MB memory module, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf game, and a Physician's Desk Reference module (note that you can install only one module at a time). Installing these modules is very easy, and they can greatly increase the functionality, power, and usefulness of the Visor. (For more information, see the descriptions of the individual Springboard modules.

Overall, we were very impressed with the Visor. It takes the best of the popular Palm platform, and adds memory and expandability--all at a great price. --Mike Brown

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ITEMS STILL!!!.......2006-12-05

Compared to the technology and color screen palm pilots and handsprings of today, THis is truley a classic and lasted long! IT's a great item for anyone who loves to be organized (school, business...). And Great Customer Service.

5 out of 5 stars Lasted Four Years - I weep for Palm.......2006-03-06

I am filled with feelings of anger and despair as I see the once great Palm Corporation in its death throes. I bought my first Handspring Visor Deluxe in early 2001 for $250 -- had it stolen 11 months later -- and bought another refurbished one from Handspring in Feb 2002 for just $100. The device gave me outstanding service until it died just a few days after its 4th (re)birthday. A refurbished device lasting 4 years! Since yesterday I have been looking for a replacement, inexpensive PalmOS handheld. Unfortunatlely, there is only PalmOne (or whatever they are called now) corporation left (having swallowed Handspring) and the PalmOS has been sold to a Japanese company. The reviews for Palm's current products -- nearly all from longtime loyal Palm-product users -- nearly uniformly slam the products.

I am depressed. I hate the MS PocketPC (or whatever they call the current version) devices -- they are much too complex, they are slow, they are too Windows-like, and they are darned expensive. In contrast, PalmOS devices were snappy, reliable, simple and easy to use, and relatively inexpensive. What more could one ask for?

There seems to be no reasonable alternative now. Should I take a risk with the low end Palm Z22 (and have it fail in two months). Handspring's customer service used to be outstanding. Palm's current customer service sucks big time. Even if the company goes out of business in the next six months (it definitely will be gone before December 2006), I don't care, as long as I can get a decent PalmOS device that lasts the next 4 years.

Thanks for all the good times, Handspring and Palm! Too bad you faded away and left us to be devoured by Microsoft.

4 out of 5 stars Visor Deluxe Blue.......2006-01-19

The best at this price. Like the color and functions. Mine has latest longer than some comparable higher end models. Life saver when trying to keep a busy life organized. Great optional backlight feature.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2005-12-18

Even though it is expensve, it is a palm pilot. You can plug it in via USB. It is a good PDA.

4 out of 5 stars Visor Deluxe.......2005-10-01

Unit works about as expected, with possible exception of a few areas of the screen that are not too sensitive to the touches from the stylus. So far I am working around that. This is my 3rd Deluxe and the 1st one to give any operational problem of any sort. Generally a good product.

4 out of 5 stars Great Palm-O/S handheld!.......2002-09-07

This is a great Palm-O/S based handheld unit. With 16MB of memory it offers plenty of storage; more than most Palm-based units on the market. The USB synchronization and rechargable battery are nice, too. A great device for those who want a 'workhorse' instead of a 'showhorse'. ;-)

2 out of 5 stars Great when working, awful customer support.......2002-08-18

It's my first PDA. As a doctor I use it both for business and personal information. After owning it for about 8 months, the battery would no longer recharge, so I sent it back to handspring. Service was promt and relatively courteous except for one thing...they didn't fix the problem! The unit was returned to me with exactly the same malfunction. Mechanical breakdowns happen, but since the customer support isn't there to back up the product, I won't buy from Handspring again.
To add some more. Finally got the problem fixed, but it recurred two more times. I am now the happy owner of a Sony Clie SJ20...compact, reliable, good screen resolution.

2 out of 5 stars Poor products, poor service.......2002-08-01

I have had my Visor PRO less than 6 months. The hotsync cradle has had to be replaced once already, and the software crashed and had to be reinstalled.

A friend bought one at the same time, it was a complete lemon. She sent it back to be replaced and went through 3 different models in as many months before she finally gave up and bought another PDA. What a waste of money!

And when you register the product with Handspring, they send you a coupon, with no info on any expiration, but when I tried to use it I was told it expires in 30 days. When I protested that they need to tell you about the 30 day limit when they send you the email, and asked to discuss it with a supervisor, I was ignored and have not been contacted again.

Like many other reviewers, this is the first and last Handspring product I will buy.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible PDA.......2002-08-01

I am new to PDA's and I thought that the Handspring Visor Pro was the way to go. Well I was wrong. I had it only two days at it would freez up on me atleast 3 times aday. Plus I thought it was too heavy and the screen color was not too good. So I returned it and bought a Sony Clie T615C. and that is the best. It came with alot more software like it has a program to be able to control all the T.V's, VCR's, and even the souround sound. It also has 64,000+ colors that makes it ver easy to read in almost any lighting conditions. It also comes with a better case to protect the screen. not a plastic one that is not attached to the pda like the pro's. The only thing that bug me a little is that the stylis may fall out if you accidently put it in your pocket upside down. The Sony is also alot easier to move through progams. it has a trun wheel on the side and back button that you can use. I thought that the Visor pro was a piece of junk.

3 out of 5 stars Battery glitch.......2002-07-19

This is my first PDA and I was happy with it until I could no longer recharge the battery. I exhausted all of the suggestions on Handspring's FAQ page with no improvement. If you buy it, put up the extra money to get the longest warranty you can...you just might need it.

Slip it in your pocket. Put it in your purse. You'll barely even notice that you're carrying it. But don't let the size of the Visor Edge deceive you. This is one powerful, rechargeable Palm OS organizer with an address book, date book and so much more. Plus, the detachable Springboard slot gives you infinite expansion possibilities. It is incredibly thin and infinitely expandable. That's the wonder of the Visor Edge handheld. And Handspring has the detachable Springboard slot to thank. Just slide it on, pop in a Springboard module and you're ready to go. So, when you want to listen to music, take a picture, or connect wirelessly, it's all just a snap away. Now you'll never have to deal with AAA batteries again. That's because the Visor Edge is rechargeable. It lasts for weeks on a single charge (based on normal usage, of course). And it recharges quickly - right in the cradle. So now you can synchronize and recharge simultaneously. One look is all it takes and everyone is flipping over the Visor Edge. And then you've just got to have it. All that metal (the real kind, not a plastic imitation), that thin physique, that cutting-edge design? they have even designed an amazingly cool flip cover that protects the screen without compromising size. And, in case you were wondering, Visor Edge is fast, too!

Amazon.com Product Description

The Handspring Visor Edge is a thin, lightweight Palm OS organizer that combines cutting-edge design with all the expansion capabilities you've come to expect in a Visor handheld. It's all metal--from the stylus to the protective flip cover--and features a rechargeable battery that charges in the included USB docking cradle.

In addition to such standard Palm OS applications as an address book, to-do list, and memo pad, Handspring adds extra features such as an enhanced datebook, advanced calculator, and a world clock. Plus, the Visor Edge has new usability features like Fast Lookup, silent alarms, wireless synchronization, address duplication, improved security, and enhanced navigation. And since it uses the Palm OS, you can download thousands of Palm-compatible applications and beam information to other Palm users.

Using its unique detachable Springboard expansion slot, you can add a wide variety of Springboard modules whenever you want--from digital cameras and MP3 players to wireless modems and modem connectors to cellular phones.

With a fast USB connection, synchronizing the Visor Edge handheld to your PC or Mac is simple and faster than a normal serial connection. (An optional serial cradle also is available.) HotSync technology ensures all your data is backed up to your desktop PC.

The Handspring Visor Edge comes with a metal stylus, metal flip cover, USB recharging cradle, AC power adapter, and detachable Springboard expansion slot. It also includes Palm Desktop software (for Windows and Macintosh) and a link to Microsoft Outlook (Windows only).

Important note to customers: Your Visor comes with a free USB cradle, but not all computers and operating system are USB compatible. If your computer uses Windows 95 or NT or Mac OS 8.0 or below, or if your computer is not equipped with USB ports, you'll need to purchase a serial recharging cradle to synchronize your computer with your new Visor.

Practical - The Visor Edge ("VE") uses Palm software. Unlike Windows CE and the like, its quick and easy to jot down biz information and to retrieve it.

Portable - Check out the specs. This is the thinnest and lightest PDA around.

Durable - Metal case with metal flip cover. My VE has been in backpacks, back pockets, and in cargo pants for almost 3 years and it's still going strong.

Expandable - A plethora of useful and fun applications are developed for the Palm platform.

It looks good - My VE is brushed silver: sleek with a futuristic feel.

When someone manages to fit a color PDA into a VE shell, I'll consider upgrading.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and reliable.......2004-06-20

I've had the Visor Edge (in metallic blue) for almost two years and have had no problems with it at all. This is my first PDA, and I've been tempted to move to a model with color and additional memory. The unreliability of so many Palm products has discouraged me.
I use my Palm for storing addresses and for the calendar. I also use it for recording client notes from my sessions.
The battery life is excellent, and hot-synching and charging from the cradle couldn't be simpler.
This is a thin unit that easily fits into backpack or purse.
Backlighting is very helpful in dim-light situations.
If you find one of these new or refurbished (which mine was), and if you don't need a lot of bells and whistles in your PDA, I couldn't recommend this more highly.

Product Description

The Handspring Visor, the first infinitely expandable handheld computer, is now even faster. In fact, the Visor Platinum is 50% faster than the Visor Deluxe. The Visor Platinum gives you enhanced power, speed and performance so you can access all your data and view crisp grayscale graphics without the wait. And, like the Visor, it comes with the unique Springboard expansion slot, so you can instantly snap in a digital camera, wireless modem or even a phone. Best of all, it is Plug and Play so there are no drivers to load. Just snap in a module and it works! If you're one of those people who uses lots of RAM, keeps tons of records, plays games or uses apps that have high-performance requirements, the Visor Platinum has the very speed you need. Now you can access all your data without the wait. And the grayscale graphics - with 16 shades of gray - are so crisp that every picture is as clear as day. What's more, since the Visor Platinum is based on the latest Palm OS, it's got new usability, security and navigation features, too.

Amazon.com Review

One of Handspring's two new Visors running with the faster 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball VZ processor, the Visor Platinum offers a competitive option to the Palm V series. Although it doesn't sport a color display like its new sibling, the Visor Prism, the Platinum offers 16 shades of gray, outputting sharper graphics in games and applications. It also features 8 MB of memory like the Visor Deluxe, providing plenty of room for storing contacts, notes, and e-mails.

But the Visor Platinum's selling point is its new processor, which performs faster than other Visors or Palm handhelds (Handspring claims up to a 50 percent increase in speed). While we didn't put a radar gun to the Platinum, it certainly felt speedier than the Visor Deluxe--tapping on an application opened it almost instantaneously.

Using a USB cradle, our desktop synchronizations sped along nicely, usually completed in just a few seconds unless we were adding applications. Additionally, since the Platinum uses the Palm OS, most third-party programs written for Palm handhelds will work for the Platinum.

One difference between the Visor Platinum and the Palm V series that Handspring most likely won't boast about is its size. Where the sleek Palm V series sports a depth of only 0.4 inches, the Platinum retains the standard Visor form factor of 0.7 inches.

But when you've got the expandability that the Handspring's Springboard module slot offers--allowing you to add a digital camera, a cell phone, a Tiger Woods golf game, or an MP3 player--you don't need to quibble over slimness. Also, like other Visors, the Platinum features a built-in microphone (though you'll need to add a module, such as a voice recorder or the phone module, to use it).

If you're already a Palm or Handspring user, there may not be enough about the Platinum to sway you to pick up this new product. But if you're looking for the cutting edge of handheld speed, the Platinum is ready and raring to go. --J. Curtis

1 out of 5 stars Great product...until you try to have it repaired.......2003-09-24

My Handspring was a trusted resource for the first 9 1/2 months I had it. Last week, it suddenly stopped working. I went to Handspring's site and filled out the return form only to be told it was out of warranty, which wasn't true; I have 2.5 months left on my warranty. I called Customer Service and was told of my options: Call Tech Support with my claim, which charges a flat fee of $20; have it repaired "out of warranty," for $100; or, as Handspring's website suggests,
"Sometimes the cost of repairing an older device is almost as much as purchasing a new one. We welcome you to explore your options: maybe it makes more sense to simply buy a new device of the same type, or even treat yourself to the latest & greatest..."

Thanks, Handspring, I've explored my options--and I'm switching to Sony.

4 out of 5 stars The platinum is GOLD.......2003-04-25

I bought this after much hesitation that I would "never need a PDA." Well, with the included software, sync-cradle and it's onboard memory, I couldn't live without it. From addresses to 3rd party software, it's my constant companion.
By sync-ing it with my work PC, I have all my emails, spreadsheets,[microsoft and word]documents in one convenient place.
I am also sold on AvantGo, a online site that downloads at sync all the things you ask it to: weather, sports, financials, etc.
Batteries are a [reasonabley priced] but it must know that because it uses them fairly frequently- but not like my GPS. It warns you, but listen to the warning- if you wait too long, your data's gone....until the next sync.
Very efficient on memory but you can always buy more-never had to.
Recommend if you want a black and white, no-frills, fast and convenient PDA that you can customize until the cows come home.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful device except for..........2002-12-31

...occasionally bits of memory mysteriously disappears. For example, of my daily mileage tabs for the past six months, November's mileage records have inexplicably vanished, though this month's (December 02) mileage records are intact. This happened to me a while back with September's mileage records, but they inexplicably reappeared a few weeks later! I'm hoping the same will happen to the missing November records...

This is my first PDA, so have no idea if this is just a fact of life with all PDAs or what.

Other than that this PDA is more than enough for my needs, no need to blow $300-500 for some fancy schmancy full-color 400 MHz (same as an old Pentium II desktop!) HP or Sony running Pocket Windows, which is actually not as easy to use as Palm OS.

2 out of 5 stars bad price.......2002-11-02

i think the PDA itself is awesome but if u want a good price with a free cradle, just go to [another website]...

Product Description

Now you can add color to your life... and your organizer - with Visor Prism, the first infinitely expandable full-color handheld computer. It displays over 65,000 vibrant colors so everything is crisper, brighter and easier to read. And, with the Springboard expansion slot, you can snap in a digital camera or a global positioning system and instantly view full-color pictures, maps and more. The Visor Prism's active-matrix backlit display really brightens your day?and your night. Now you can view picture-quality graphics like photos, videos, games, and maps. And everything is incredibly easy to read, too. Some things just look better in color. With the Visor Prism, you can snap in a Springboard module and take advantage of the Springboard platform's incredible color potential. The Visor Prism's internal lithium ion battery recharges in minutes - and it does it while resting in its cradle. And, with normal use, the battery lasts nearly two weeks on a single charge. The Visor Prism not only has great colors on the inside, it also comes in a cool cobalt blue color on the outside.

Amazon.com Review

Handspring's first foray into the realm of color palmtops, the Visor Prism may not deliver the crispness of displays on the latest Windows CE devices from Casio and Compaq, but it does improve on the Palm IIIc, its main competitor.

While the Prism costs more than the Palm IIIc, its increased color depth and brightness (it delivers 16-bit color compared to the 8-bit color of the IIIc) really shines in gaming and graphical applications. Even the default world map that's used to set geographic location and time appeared more distinct and offered the illusion of 3-D.

Like other Visors, the Prism contains a Springboard module slot, letting users upgrade its capabilities--such as adding an MP3 player, expanding memory, and eventually adding a cell phone (among many options). With the color screen of the Prism, modules such as the eyemodule digital camera really take on new life. With the Prism, the eyemodule takes color pictures, while previous versions of the Visor only allowed users to view them in grayscale.

Further, unlike other Visors, the Visor Prism uses an internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery--a nice touch as the color display would have drained the standard two AAAs quickly. Handspring claims that a fully charged battery should last a week or two with normal use, but we found continuous use of the display, such as with game playing or extended note taking, wore the battery down much faster. However, every time the Prism syncs in the fast-transferring USB cradle, the battery gets charged--and it only takes a few minutes to top off the current level of juice.

Although the color screen only extends the thickness of the Prism by a tenth of an inch compared to previous Visors, it's still twice as thick as the sleek Palm V line of devices. But it is smaller than CE devices such as Casio's EM-500 and the Compaq iPaq, and for its size category of palmtops, it delivers the best colors around. --J. Curtis

4 out of 5 stars 3 years with my Prisim.......2004-08-30

I have had my Prisim for 3 years now, The hard shell cover has allowed me to carry, (and sit on )it for all of the 3 years. The 8 meg is plenty for normal use.
It is in use every day, and backedup/charged just as frequently.
I know there are more advanced units out there, with more features and such, but I dred the day I will need to find a replacement that can measure up to this one when it is gone.
I never leave home without it for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant value for PDAphone (Visor Prism+Phone).......2004-05-21

I've been using Visor Prism + Phone for about 2 months now, I bought it from a local store which suprisingly still had some stocks and guaranteed the item for 1 year.
Overall, I found it very very useful. I'm not a heavy PDA user, so mainly I use it to read e-books, see photos, games. Visor's 8 Megs is more than enough.
More about the phone, I can't tell how much I admire the modularity of Springboard. Handspring engineer have done great job. The phone and sms function work perfect, compared to the more pricey Tungsten W.
It's better than Treo 270 I assume, on color display (Treo has 4096 while Prism has 65K) and of course using Visor I don't have to worry about flip hinge crack that often happen to Treo user.
Some drawbacks that I found is that battery drained quickly, I also notice that there are some dead pixels in the unit I bought, and last but not least it's quite heavy to carry.
Based on the above, I still think that this product is a great collectible item, worth the price, and everywhere you carry it people were just curious to know. It's a bit rare that to some it's more intriguing than even the popular O2 XDA. Well done Handspring!

5 out of 5 stars I Miss my Visor Prism!!.......2004-01-10

I replaced my Prism with a Palm M515 and I miss my Visor!! If I knew then how difficult it would be to replace I would have purchased several more, kept a nice inventory and and made a profit on the rest. Handspring made a VERY nice color PDA.....I hope PalmOne stays with it...

4 out of 5 stars Long-time Owner & User and Love It!!.......2003-12-22

I have had my Prism for years now and absolutely love it. Loved it so much that when my wife was ready for a PDA, she got one too. We have Targus keyboards, the Magellan GPS, modems, Eyemodule camera, tons of memory and applications and now we can get apps and accessories for next to nothing!! She dropped hers the other day, broke the chassis, and will probably buy another--cheaper than repairing!! I was in a hurry in the car connecting the GPS, smashed the Springboard pins and will probably buy another as well!! Sorry for those with bad experiences, but we've had great service with ours. Obviously, a new power-user would want something more up-to-date, but for a student or someone like me who has had their Prism for a while, it still proves to be a great value!!

1 out of 5 stars don't count on it.......2003-10-08

I have now been through two of these, I might be silly but I expect to get more than a year and a half out of my investment. Customer service stinks and is a rip off. Both Prisims are garbage for numerous reasons, not batteries, they were changed. If you want something that will last awhile don't get it. And I don't have any other software on there except Datebook.

Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The Handspring Visor Edge proves what Palm V owners have known for some time: bulk is bad. Although we used to be overjoyed at the prospect of using any handheld organizer that was smaller than an attaché case, the Visor Edge has completely spoiled us on the superiority of slimness.

At 0.44 inches thick and weighing only 4.8 ounces, the Edge feels more like a futuristic data pad (which it should) than a deck of cards containing electrical circuitry. It's far more comfortable to slide into a purse or shirt pocket, and its anodized aluminum case is likely to withstand more bumps and jostles than earlier plastic cases. Further, its superior aluminum cover is the best available screen protector we've seen that ships with a PDA. Its hinge is spring loaded so that it snaps into place at a 145-degree angle. You can push it back farther, to about a 260-degree angle, but unfortunately you can't rest it flat against the back of the Visor. Our only other minor complaint is that it takes a bit of practice to quickly release the cover's tab from the bottom of the device.

Another joy is the weighted metal stylus that comes with the Visor Edge. Earlier styluses were plastic afterthoughts that cheapened the experience of using a Visor. This one is the exact opposite: the barrel is slightly swollen where you rest your fingers, giving the stylus more heft that translates into a better feel for writing. The stylus attaches onto the outside of the Edge's edge by clipping a retractable post into a small groove at the top; the writing tip sits snugly in a holder at the bottom. Releasing the stylus is a matter of pushing a rocker switch to disengage the latch at the top--a motion that will take some practice. But although the stylus is clipped to the side of the Edge, it's remarkably sturdy and never came close to falling out during our testing.

Of course, slimness isn't the Edge's only advantage, even if it's the most notable. The Visor Edge packs in features common to Handspring's line of handhelds: it comes with 8 MB of memory, runs the Palm OS (version 3.5.2H, which unfortunately can't be upgraded due to the type of memory it uses), has a crisp gray scale screen, and includes Handspring-only software like Date Book+, City Time, and an advanced Calculator application. The Edge runs on an internal battery that's quickly recharged when you put it into the included docking cradle (which is a minimalist piece of art by itself).

A new software addition is Fast Lookup, a slick feat of engineering within the Address Book application. Press the Visor's scroll-up button to enter Fast Lookup mode, then use the other application buttons to tap out the name you're looking for. For example, the Date Book button represents letters A-L of a person's last name, while the Address Book button counts for letters M-Z. After a few presses, the name you want appears in the contact list. It's also worth noting that the Edge can perform a HotSync operation out of the box via infrared to your computer (earlier Visors couldn't).

The most noteworthy Visor feature is the Springboard expansion slot, which on the Edge turns out to be both an advantage and a detractor. To achieve the Edge's thin profile, the Springboard slot is no longer a part of the handheld itself. To add Springboard functionality, you must connect a rather bulky adapter onto the back of the Visor Edge, then slide Springboard modules into the adapter. On the plus side, you can use any Springboard module you like just as you would with any other Visor; the downside is that it ruins the thinness factor of the Edge.

However, if you think you'll use Springboard modules only occasionally and want the advantages of a slim and lightweight handheld organizer, you'll want to head for the Edge. --Jeff Carlson

3 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners but watch out...........2003-12-24

I have had my Neo for about 6 months now and use it several times an hour as I am a therapist trying to keep up with appointments and phone numbers all day in and out of the office. This thing had become like my right hand until last week when the batteries went dead. As before, I fetched some new batteries, put them in the back, closed the compartment, but...no power. Tried several other sets of batteries, still no power. My heart sank, considering all my appointments for the day (not to mention the month and previous few months) were in there and I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing that afternoon. After several attempts, the Neo powered back on but guess what? ALL MY INFORMATION WAS ERASED. Thankfully, I had hotsynched about 2 weeks before this event but not often enough to retrieve any information for the last two weeks or the following month. I have spent a solid week recompiling my appointments and phone numbers but, even so, all the phone numbers have my fax number in parenthesis before the actual number. I don't understand that, but whatever, it was easy to erase all that. Lesson learned here: if you purchase one of these, hotsynch daily and be careful of technical glitches in the programming. Myself, I am returning this and shopping for a color PDA NOT made by Handspring.

5 out of 5 stars rock solid handheld.......2003-08-21

I have owned my handspring visor neo for more than a year and a half now. The machine is extremely reliable. It has never crashed on me, despite falling on the floor multiple times. The machine has never had any problems hot synching with the internet or any problems beaming with other handhelds. I use it daily as a medicine intern and rely heavily on epocrates and 5 minute clinical consult programs. The software is outstanding--very detailed and easy to use and continually updated and improving. Finally, the machine is reasonably priced when compared with other devices of similar utility. I have friends who paid more and received defective devices, and I feel lucky to have bought this one.

true story addendum: I recently got sick in the hospital and while vomiting, dropped my handheld into the toilet bowl. For three days it wouldn't turn on. Then, miraculously, it turned on. I managed to hot-synch all the data from my PC back onto the handheld without any problems. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Best buy for a beginner.......2003-05-01

Basicly, what I want from a PDA include organization functions, being compatible with the majority of softwares available and the potential to expend the memory. With a resonable price, handspring Visor Neo gives me all! With plenty of Palm OS freeware, easy and quick synchronization, my PDA just become more and more valuable! And boy, they have the best customer support team in the world!

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic PDA.......2002-12-17

The Springboard slot allows amazing use variety--

4 out of 5 stars great value and quality, but may not be right for everyone.......2002-12-17

I've had the original Visor for about 1.65 years (nice, black plastic that feels like that of a TV remote, 2MB of RAM, Palm OS 3.1, 4 shades of grayscale, 50% slower processor than the Neo) and the Visor Neo purple (I don't care if it says blue on the box, everytime I look at it, I see purple/indigo) for about 5 months now. I primarily made the upgrade to a Neo over the original mostly due to the extra RAM and faster processor. The new version of the OS and continuing Springboard compatibility were additional plusses. Finally, It was priced cheaper than what my Visor had cost, had free shipping, and came with a free promotional nylon carry-case (the one with the big zipper, 1 big pocket for your handheld, 2 mini-pockets for any Springboard modules, and a little room left over to squeeze something else, like a set of headphones).
Here's my detailed breakdown of the Neo:

Palm OS: If you've ever played around with a Palm OS before, then you gotta admire its simplicity. There's Very little micro managing, relatively low problems, and has thousands of applications available. This platform is also used by 75% - 90% of the handheld community, so unless they're sticking with their cell phones, you'll be able to freely-exchange software, contact info, and variety of other things. Unless you're hardcore on viewing video, listening to mp3s, or other heavy multi-media tasks, PalmOS should suit you fine.

Exterior: has that "cheap, greasy plastic" feel in where fingerprints and body oils smudge very easily on it. Would-have been nice if there was an alternative to this, but I've gotten used to this. Having a snap cover as opposed to a flip cover means that you'll need 2 hands to open/close it, but I've gotten used to this too. They're 3 different colors, mine being opaque/translucent, lighter-colored ones being more transparent/translucent. If your cover is also clean, you'll be able to see your screen without removing the cover, which can be convenient due to what I've mentioned previously.

HotSync/Palm Desktop: Easy setup, easy to use. Backs up your handheld, lets you enter data onto PC and sync it over to your handheld, as well as new software. It'd be nice if it displayed important notices more clearly, such as same files being duplicated because of different information from HotSyncing. Currently, you need to go through the logs to pinpoint this. All in all very well done (with a backup module to provide fail-safe if something should go wrong)

Screen: Grayscale does look ugly next to a color screen and/or higher resolution screen, but you do get your "returns" with a less expensive and less power draining PDA. For me, it would've been nice to view pictures, maps, and games in color, but the grayscale gets the job done quite adequately. Pressure detection on the screen produced minimal concerns, as several times I would miss when I try to click on very small targets, although it may have been like that because I miscallibrated the detection accuracy.

Battery life: the 2 AAA alkalines last me about 2 weeks when I do an hour of gaming or other heavy use a day, while over 3.5 weeks with more mild usage of daily lookups and small notetaking. If this is a concern for you, nickel cadium batteries should save you money. Even though Handspring doesn't recommend this, it's moreso a battery guage monitoring issue than performance/damage-wise.

Reliability: As of with my Neo, I never had any fatal problems. Certain times I had to soft reset because of missing files for some applications caused errors that prompted me to do so, but I never had any information losses, freezes, or crashes. With my original Visor however, loading tons of games or something caused it to "downward spiral". This is where day-by-day, the performance and operation gets noticeably worse (like Win 98 from when you first use it fresh from a reformatted hard drive to4 years later when you need to reboot the damn thing 2-12x a day). Soft-resetting my old Visor temporarily solved this problem for a few days at a time, but ultimately a hard reset (purging all of your data) was required to, yet again, Temporarily remedy this problem. Tech support (NOT a toll-free number BTW) was kind enough to promptly send me a replacement (but first sending me an actual return box to put the defective handheld in. Procedures.... humph).

Springboard: Of the 2 Handspring handhelds I own, both aren't tremendously innovative compared to what the competition has to offer, but are nice values, so I'd generally recommend them to anybody. However, if you aren't going to bother dealing with them modules, I'd recommend you consider the Palm series or even a PocketPC, just to keep your options open. If you Are primarily interested in Visors for their Springboard modules, then poke around online and other places to find out more information, specifically, what modules you would use, availability, and prices. Thankfully, modules no longer cost "an arm and a leg" like they did years ago, but certain combinations of purchases can still deplete your wallet quickly. Many models of the latter 2 also have some sort of expandable data storage/backup and can even mimic the functionality that Springboard technology offers for Visors (e.g. certain Palms have wireless email/web capabilities and PocketPCs have a built in mp3 player). As for myself, I currently own 4 different kinds of modules: 8MB backup module (peace of mind for in case my PC AND my Visor BOTH fail), 16MB Hagiwara flash memory (expandable storage for databases, Ebooks, and games), a 2MB flash memory + "silent" vibrating alarm (for the limited amount of memory and also being cheap), and the SoundsGood mp3 player I managed to find on Amazon Marketplace (I plan on getting a REAL mp3 player soon, but this novelty item does come in handy for when I don't lug the player around).

It even comes in five great colors - ice, graphite, blue, orange, and green - so you are sure to find one that suits your style, personality, or mood.
