Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-09-26

This receiver was easy to set up and use. The video upconverting works well from my HD cable receiver component feed to the HDMI input of my HD overhead projector. Awesome 82" picture. Sounds great too with my onkyo sks-ht240 speakers.

2 out of 5 stars Limitations.......2007-09-22

The HDMI upconvert, does not give the best picture. Component video ends up working better, so I would seek other features in this price range, such as more connectivity. Quality video conversion comes at a higher price. If you're using component video, the instant status displays (volume adjustments, sound modes, etc.) don't come thru. So, although the receiver has all the latest features, they don't really work well yet. Onkyo Tech Support was no help and even seemed annoyed that someone would call them.

4 out of 5 stars good basic reciever.......2007-09-21

I bought this receiver because it has upconversion and HDMI switching. The greatest thing about this model is that it converts any video source to HDMI so that I can run a single cable to my TV. This is what I wanted since my TV is wall mounted and I didn't want a dozen cables running up the wall. This receiver does everything I want. Setup was simple enough. Sound quality is good. All a great price. I definitely recommend this receiver.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Product.......2007-09-09

I have owned Onkyo products in the past(amps, pre-amps, receivers, etc). They seem to last forever. This Onkyo entry is all that it appears to be. It reproduces sound--all HD formats--flawlessly. It has two HDMI inputs, and one HDMI output to the TV. There is no picture degradation. It can be set up in less than 30 minutes. The remote can be programmed by the Harmony Remote series. I wish only that it was a little more powerful (perhaps 110 watts per channel instead of 90). Still, the sound, even at lower volumes, is crisp and clean.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2007-09-07

Love it so far. HDMI working to perfection. Haven't noticed any video processing issues as listed in many reviews.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great system for the price.......2007-09-27

I've been very impressed with this system so far. I like the Onkyo package because it includes a quality receiver without charging for extras like DVD/CD changer. The receiver (HT-R550) is mid-way between the TX-SR505 and the TX-SR605 in terms of features, and outputs more power than either. There's no upconversion, only switching, but at this price range, you're not likely to find decent upconversion hardware in anyone's system. The Audyssey setup is simple and effective and the speakers sound great with some upgraded wiring. There are a couple minor inconveniences. The wiring is cheap and flimsy - definately recommend some 16 or 14 awg. The remote could be programmed for the TV and DVD player, but not our digital cable box, and none of the other component remotes could control the Onkyo. When using the "A/B" speakers together, the "A" set becomes a 5.1 channel - power from the 2 rear speakers is used for the "B" set.

Overall, highly recommended! More than I expected for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Clean, & Warm.......2007-09-20

After having had this system for a week, I am now utterly impressed with it. Once you get all the speakers calibrated, replace all the speaker wire with some 14 gage, and get your room setup properly you'll find this system blows you away too.

Strait out of the box you will not be impressed. But that will be the case with any sound system. They need to be properly setup.

I HIGHLY suggest replacing the wire with METRA Ltd S14-100 MTA 14 Gauge Clear Speaker Wire. It really does make a world of difference. I was thinking the speakers were not as clear as I would have liked, until I installed the new wire. Now everything is extra crisp and clear.

After doing tons of research, Onkyo was the only one I could find that consistently got great reviews. I can see why!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2007-09-17

After reading the reviews, I decided to buy this HTS. After setting everything up correctly I am really impressed with the sound. If you buy this and it doesn't sound good, spend a little more time with the settings before you make your final judgment.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing HTiB for the price.......2007-09-10

I have been researching for a decent enough HTiB for almost 6 months now. I had bad experiences with Panasonic, LG, and Yamahas (Not a particular model). They didn't impress me much and I always wanted to be blown away before I see the "Max Volume" on the screen. I was going to buy the HT-SR600 due to ONKYO's reputation but by the time I decided the new SR800 was released. The built-in 230W subwoofer and powerful satellites made me go with the 800 vs 600. However it becomes harder to mess with 7 speakers versus 5. I received the product and I was happy (not as much as I expected after reading the reviews). After testing it for 2 weeks, finally I replaced the wiring with 14AWG speaker wires and audio cables with Fiber Optics (or digital COAX). I had no clue that could make such a difference. I am no longer able to turn the volume all the way up and I see no distortion whatsoever. Endless input/outputs and amazing quality for the price. Highly recommended for people who want to stay below $500 and still be proud of their system.

5 out of 5 stars surround sound.......2007-09-09

the system is working good so far but I had to get a replacement for the first order because the receiver did not work...it takes some time to set up and configure to your room....the sound quality is very good and there are quite a few different modes to choose from...all in all I give it good marks

5 out of 5 stars Great home theater receiver- HDMI 1.3 switching for $500!.......2007-07-06

I was in the market for a new receiver that would handle HDMI switching duties for my LG BH-100 BluRay / HD-DVD player and Tivo Series 3. The receiver needed to support the new Dolby Digital and DTS high bit rate codecs to fully take advantage of the features of the BH-100. I was very pleasantly surprised to find everyting I was looking for in the Onkyo TX-SR605S for $500.

I have used the player for a month now and have been completely satisfied with its features and performance.

Highly recommended!

From the Manufacturer

Experience Seriously Capable Home Theater with Stunning Versatility To best appreciate the versatility of the TX-SR505, think of the home entertainment components that define today's consumer electronics landscape. It's a formidable selection, with HD-ready displays (from the first generation to the latest 1080p models), DVD players (including the latest Blu-ray and HD DVD players), gaming consoles (such as the Xbox and PlayStation 3), set-top boxes (consider PVRs offering HD transmissions) and MP3 players (specifically the dominant iPod). With the TX-SR505's HDMI transport enabling pass-thru sources up to 1080p and component video supporting 720p and 1080i sources, this A/V receiver is a fine investment for those who want the best of what's available today…and tomorrow. Also, with the ability to tune the TX-SR505 to your room's surroundings through Audyssey 2EQ, you're looking at a seriously capable entertainment control center, without the excessive price tag.

192/24 digital-to-analog converters
Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

Audyssey 2EQ to Counteract Room Acoustic Problems
Loudspeakers are specifically designed to deliver sound without distortion or coloration. Nevertheless, walls, furniture and other objects reflect and absorb sound, creating distortion that is unique to your own space. To counter this, Audyssey 2EQ corrects problems both in frequency response and in the time domain (where most of the problems lie), across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious—a clear, precise and natural sound.

DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6
There are two DTS-ES (Extended Surround) formats: DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and DTS-ES Matrix 6.1. The DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, like Dolby Digital Surround EX, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS, which, like Dolby Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby Digital. Receivers carrying the "96/24" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).

HDMI
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what's needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.

HDMI is fully backward compatible with PCs,displays and consumer electronics devices incorporating the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. Both HDMI and DVI were pioneered by Silicon Image and are based on TMDS®, Silicon Image's powerful, high-speed, serial link technology. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, and with 5 Gbps of bandwidth, HDMI can accommodate future enhancements and requirements. Because HDMI was designed specifically for consumer electronics applications, it offers an array of additional consumer enhancements. As digital content can manifest itself in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, HDMI-enabled systems will automatically configure to display content in the most effective format. In addition, HDMI enables a single remote point and click, allowing manufacturers to deliver home theater systems that automatically configure from a single command from a remote control -- turning on or off the components necessary to view a DVD, listen to a CD, or watch cable or satellite TV.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology
Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path - perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

7.1 Multichannel Inputs
The emergence of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs promises to bring unparalleled realism to home theater. Dolby and DTS have each developed improved audio formats to be encoded on these new DVD discs that will superbly complement the latest in highdefinition video. By connecting a player compatible with these new audio codecs to an Onkyo A/V receiver equipped with 7.1 multichannel inputs, you will be able to experience extreme sonic clarity from these new discs, while retaining the full use of the receiver's other onboard codecs.

CinemaFILTER
The tonal balance of a film soundtrack can be edgy and bright when played back over audio equipment in your home—this is because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large theaters, using commercial equipment. Onkyo has developed its own solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater.

Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic IIx
Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX. By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result - a fuller 360º experience is created…even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic IIx is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic and subsequent Pro-Logic II standards. Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio.

RI (Remote Interactive)
With Onkyo's exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What's more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo's RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can't be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

2 out of 5 stars Be sure this is what you want!.......2007-09-24

'HDMI Pass through' means you might as well have paid $30 for an HDMI cable as bought this reciever. It cannot extract the audio channels from HDMI. It also cannot do any upconversion or downconversion so you have to wire every possible video source to your TV. The whole reason I bought this thing is it could take HDMI S-Video, and Component inputs and switch them to my TV. I wasn't careful enough.

In terms of sound. It sounds really good, but it does its own mojo on the audio and it sounds quite different than the raw mode when you play it through their DSP surround logic.

I didn't find it simple at all to set up. The manual references an earlier button interface than mine has. I spent hours trying to get it to provide a center channel unamplified signal output so I could use my TV speakers as the center channel. Impossible, unless I missed something. It only switches audio off the inputs onto its powered speaker terminals when it is set in surround sound mode. Although there are a bunch of audio out plugs, they are never active for the digital inputs AFIK.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and awesome.......2007-09-18

If you are looking for a HDMI receiver on a budget this is the one to pick. I know there is no on screen menu, but it is easy to use and sounds awesome. Have polk surrounds and sub and could not be happier

4 out of 5 stars Good receiver at a good price.......2007-09-18

I'll start by saying that overall I am very pleased with this receiver and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an full featured budget priced receiver. I am NOT an audiophile. I'm just a guy who enjoys watching movies in surround sound. As such I try to buy components that offer the features I need without all the extra stuff I don't need at a low price. This receiver fits that description perfectly.

This receiver is an upgrade from a 7 year old Pioneer VSX-D608 5.1 receiver. The main reason for the upgrade was that I plan to move my home theater system to a larger 20x20 room and felt that a 7.1 speaker arrangement would be really nice in that room. I'm currently using the new Onkyo in the old room with 5.1 speakers. The move into the new room is a few weeks way.

Since I'm still in the old temporary room I didn't use the Audyssey automatic setup system instead I manually configured all the speaker settings and distances. I found the controls and menus to be fairly easy to navigate and use.

When shopping for a receiver one of my top priorities is a clean low distortion amp which gives you very nice and detailed sound. Be careful when shopping. There are some receivers with 1% THD which IMO is too high. You can tell the difference in sound between 1% and the Onkyo's 0.08%. The SR505 is excellent in this regard.

The SR505 supports the standard formats like DD (Dolby Digital) 5.1 and DTS and also supports many new formats such as DD EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS 96/24, DTS-ES, DTS-NEO6 and others. Even though many of these are 7.1 formats they work just fine in a 5.1 setup. The SR505 automatically handles the missing 2 speakers. These formats give a lot of versatility to the audio because they allow conversion of 2 channel audio up to 7.1 and 5.1 up to 7.1. It all works very well. It also remembers what listening mode you have selected for each kind of source audio signal. For example I have it set that when I'm watching TV through my cable box (digital connection to receiver) any channels in 2.0 stereo are converted to DTS Neo:6 and any HT channels in 5.1 stay in their native DD 5.1 format. As I switch channels the SR505 automatically uses the correct listening mode based on the source audio signal. The only negative is that the SR505 makes a 'click' sound whenever it changes listening modes. It's not really annoying but is loud enough to hear.

Regarding video connections the SR505 does allow video switching but does NOT do any conversion between different types of video inputs. For example if you have a DVD and cable box connected to the SR505 with Component inputs then the SR505 will switch the video on it's Component output to your TV. However if the DVD was using S-Video and the cable box Component then the SR505 will NOT convert the S-Video up to Component. It will only output the S-Video over it's S-Video output. The more expensive higher end Onkyo models will do that type of conversion. You just need to decide if that feature is worth the rather large increase in cost. For me it wasn't worth it.

If you read other user reviews on the net for the SR505 it seems the HDMI switching is an area of confusion. The bottom line is that the SR505 will switch ONLY video over HDMI and NOT both video and audio. All this means is that in addition to the HDMI connection you will also need a separate audio connection between the device and the receiver. So between your cable box and SR505 you would need an HDMI connection for video and a coax or optical digital for audio. Full HDMI audio/video switching is available on much more expensive higher end receivers. Again the buyer needs to decide if this feature is worth the extra money.

I have also found the HDMI to be a bit quirky so I decided not to use those connections myself. For example, when I add my cable box connected to the SR505 over HDMI the display on my cable box would flash 'd00' every few seconds whenever the SR505 was turned off. I found the flashing annoying so I connected my cable box directly to my TV. The only other HDMI device I own is an upconverting DVD player. The player doesn't show any usual behavior when connected through the SR505 but I noticed that whenever the receiver is turned off my Sony TV forgets which wide video mode it was in for the DVD player input and I have to change it back manually the next time I play a DVD. I don't know if it's a quirk with my TV or what but it doesn't happen when the DVD player is direct connected to the TV over HDMI so that how I have it connected now. The bottom line is that I tried to use the HDMI switching on the SR505 but because of the unexpected side effects I mentioned above I decided to not use it and went back to direct to TV HDMI connections.

The SR505 includes a nice manual a fairly good remote which will also operate your other devices.

Overall I'm pleased with my purchase. The SR505 is a great receiver for the price. I have no regrets. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and awesome........2007-09-06

Easy to setup and sounds absolutely great with some Klipsch satellites and an Onkyo sub. I love the back panel - the layout is great and super easy to navigate and use. Couldn't be happier. An excellent value for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value!.......2007-08-24

Am pleased with the SR505 receiver. Delivered promptly and in excellent condition. Plenty of power. Onkyo has long made quality, mid priced units and this is no exception. Prior reviews about the need for separate audio for the HDMI connection were very helpful,

Experience Seriously Capable Home Theater with Stunning Versatility To best appreciate the versatility of the TX-SR505S, think of the home entertainment components that define today's consumer electronics landscape.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great receiver, using as 5.1.......2007-07-17

My room is far to small for 7.1 speakers. This receiver has the ability to be a 5.1 receiver as well and it works amazing. You can also use 5.1 in one room and have 2 channel stereo in another room. My only complaint, which was mentioned in a previous review is that the HDMI does not use the audio portion of the HDMI signal so you will need HDMI and some other digital audio wire.

4 out of 5 stars High Quality but Lacking a Key Feature.......2007-07-13

There is no doubt that Onkyo builds very fine electronic equipment, and this receiver is no exception. It boasts Onkyo's usual fine build and finish quality and comes with a host of features making it an extraordinarily flexible receiver at a very affordable price. The one feature lacking in its predecessor (TX-SR504) was the presence of HDMI connectivity. This shortcoming has been addressed in the new model but, unfortunately, is not fully implemented. The HDMI circuits in this receiver DO NOT pass the audio portion of the program; they pass only the video portion. This necessitates the use of the analog audio or optical digital audio outputs to provide the audio portion of the program to any connected device (such as a high definition television). Since one of the main reasons for the existence of the HDMI specification is to simplify connectivity, one has to wonder what the engineers (or, more likely, the marketing and accounting department heads) were thinking when they decided to hamper this connection circuitry! While it's true that many people may only want to pass the video program portion to a connected monitor, routing the audio through the receiver's amplifiers and on to the connected loudspeakers, one should not purchase this receiver thinking that it has full HDMI connectivity, because it doesn't. Otherwise, this product represents a very good buy.

From the Manufacturer

You'll find very little differentiation between most entry-level home theater receivers: passable performance, negligible processing capabilities and little (if any) versatility. The TX-SR304 5.1-channel home theater receiver doesn't follow that well-trodden path. By giving you the connections to the A/V components on everyone's lips today—HDTVs, digital video recorders, gaming consoles, etc—the TX-SR304 wants to broaden your entertainment possibilities, not limit them to basic DVD and CD playback. Key technology Features:
192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD.

Pro-Logic II provides a full-range signal to the five main channels, in addition to a subwoofer channel. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quality product at a good price.......2007-09-22

Easy to set up. Excellent sound and lots of power for my small system. Sound field options are limited (especially in stereo mode)but controls, including the remote are simple and intuitive. Great value.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2007-07-22

It's not a bad receiver, sound quality is decent, it has enough connectors, but I've compared this receiver with Yamaha HTR-5930 (which you could get for the same price as Onkyo) and here's where Onkyo loses:

1. The biggest disappointment: I've connected subwoofer to the unit and could hear humming noise coming from it. Yamaha is dead quiet unless, of course, music is playing.

2. Yamaha is more powerful (110 vs. 65)

3. Sound from Yamaha is more "natural". This may be something that you won't like if you prefer a lot of high frequency tones, but for me it worked better.

4. Inputs are named 'DVD', 'Video 1', 'Video 2', etc in Onkyo. In Yamaha they have 'DVD', 'Cable', 'VCR', 'Aux' - it is much easier to remember what you need to switch to. On top of that you can customize Yamaha's input names, which makes it even easier.

5. Yamaha's remote works very well as universal remote. My favorite feature: when you press a button to switch receiver's input to DVD, for example, remote also switches into DVD mode, so you can immediately press 'Play' on the remote and your DVD will start playing. Press 'VCR' button and receiver starts playing sound from VCR and remote controls VCR as well. Very convenient.

6. Onkyo's appearance is somewhat dated, finish gives impression of a cheap product (again, I am comparing with Yamaha here), screen looks like it came from 80-s.

7. In terms of size, Onkyo is about 1.5 times deeper then Yamaha (width and height are the same).

I went with Yamaha.

5 out of 5 stars excellent value.......2007-04-13

I had a receiver with a display problem but the rest of the system components (the speakers) were fine. I ordered this unit and am very pleased. The sound is great, especially in digital optical mode. The remote is easy to use and much smaller than the old one. It is not a universal remote unless you have all Onkyo components. There are no S-Video jacks, but there are plenty of other jacks for most systems. Look closely at the rear view picture and zoom in on it.

5 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-SR304S 5.1 Channel Receiver.......2007-03-14

I was looking for a low-cost receiver with surround sound capability for a vacation home. I have never purchased any components from Onkyo before, but a friend of mine more familiar with audio components recommended it. The price was very reasonable, especially after Amazon recently reduced the price to just over $140.

The receiver was shipped from J&R Music World. The packaging was good, and everything arrived in good shape. The directions weren't great, but having set up 5.1 systems before, this was not a tremendous hurdle. Once the unit was turned on, though, the actual setup of the speakers and other features was much simpler and much more effective than the unit I have in my primary home. It was really a snap to get the speakers configured and balanced.

The sound quality is excellent. I don't have a sub-woofer hooked up yet, but the compensation by the unit is excellent, and the sound quality is still top notch. It does not have many of the bells and whistles of other units, and it is just a 5.1 system, but if you're looking for a basic unit that provides all of the necessities, good sound quality, and ease of installation, this unit would be an excellent choice.

2 out of 5 stars Makes strange noises when using digital output........2007-02-11

I had the TX-SR304. Everything sounded great. However, certain times when I played my DVD, the Onyko produced a loud high-pitched ear-piercing sound. Sounds almost like a record scratching. The most common times it made this sound was during the DVD menu, when it replays the music theme. The receiver would transition from Dolby Digital to stereo then back to DD again, then making that loud sound. Everything was great, but this one problem made me return this item, which is a bummer because I would have kept it otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars great value, great sound.......2007-09-26

i am really pleased with my surround sound system from onkyo. other than having to replace the speaker wires, i have no complaints. i can't believe such a good sounding system cost so little. i would buy this system again if i had to do it over again.

2 out of 5 stars Sound is not that great.......2007-09-24

Not happy with sound quality. The speakers are bigger than expected and don't come with mounting bracket/arms. The speakers have metal clip on the back where you can put them flat on the wall with a nail or a screw. So this means you can't control the angle at which they point. Even if you buy separate mounting brackets, you will not be able to mout these speakers becuase there are no universal mounting holes.

Onkyo makes home-theater easy and delivers great sound! When it comes to choosing a home theater system, you need to consider some crucial questions. Will it easily connect to existing TV models as well as high-definition displays with 720p/1080i quality? Can it readily accept all your home entertainment components and switch between DVDs, CDs, MP3s, broadcast programming and game software? Does it draw from an amplification design that can add power and vitality to your entertainment experience? Will it easily fit into, and perform in, virtually any sized room? On top of that, can you wallmount your speakers with 4-axis tilt capability? The HT-SR600 5.1-channel receiver/speaker package provides a compelling answer without burdening you with the price tag carried by more complex separate components. Everthing is matched and coordinated for a quick conversion to home-theater and it's a must-have if you're ready to get your HDTV set. 5.1 Surround is part of the HDTV signal. 2 out of 5 stars Good for movies, bad for music.......2007-09-15

I ordered this item to replace my aging stereo. I'm returning it. The sound is boomy. It is almost like listening to music with your head in a plastic garbage can. I tried all the sound mode/bass/treble/individual speaker volume settings and couldn't fix it (some extreme EQ settings in Itunes made it tolerable - but by no means good). I was going to give it a reasonable try (perhaps I just had to get used to surround sound), but it was actually painful, even at low volume levels. I can see why this set would be boomy, it's a very powerful amplifier driving some very lightweight plastic speakers (so lightweight I was able to hang them on the wall with picture hook nails).

Some movies (such Master and Commander with the 5.1 sound track) sounded spectacular, but most music didn't.

5 out of 5 stars A nice inexpensive system, and good for music.......2007-08-19

My wife and I bought this system to replace a dead stereo. She is a classical music lover, and so fairly demanding on audio systems. The thing we were most afraid of is that the system would be biased toward huge bass for explosions, etc., at the expense of wide dynamic range and faithful sound reproduction.

I'm pleased to say that we have been very happy with this system. It's very nice for movies, but also has the true sound and dynamic range to make listening to music a pleasure. I've heard some folks complain about the passive (as opposed to powered) subwoofer, but so far it's been more than adequate for us; I even had to de-emphasize its channel now and then.

We have the system in a very small (maybe 12 by 15 feet) room, so that may explain the fact that the subwoofer is perfectly adequate for us; I could imagine that it migt be anemic for a big room. However, for such an inexpensive system, we've been immensely pleased with the quality of sound. Well done, Onkyo.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound at a great price.......2007-05-21

This is the second Onkyo system I have in the house and I am completely over joyed with both of them. When we purchased our second plasma TV for the home I wanted to make sure that we would have great sound to go with it. I also had a color issue to contend with, had to be black just like the TV. At the time Onkyo had some black systems available for $550-900, more then my wife wanted to spend. After trying to satisfy my wife's desire to not spend much money (and three home theater systems later) this model ended up being the winner. The other units were from Philips (two different models), and Yamaha. Both of the Philips units were horrible, delayed and out of sync audio. The Yamaha had no audio issues and sounded much better. But by far none of them compare to the sound quality and performance of the Onkyo. When Onkyo introduced this new model line I was in heaven. This system is in a room that is 14' by 18' and at 650 watts it has plenty of power to fill the room. Even the bass is much better then the Yamaha and the subwoofer in the Yamaha is powered. I don't know how Onkyo does it but who am I to argue with what I hear. As usual the setup was easy and the system was rocking in a matter of a few minutes. The system was shipped to me free by Amazon and was in perfect condition. If you are looking for a home theater system in a box you will not be disapointed by this one especially at this price.

4 out of 5 stars disappointed in Amazon.......2007-09-08

I purchased the ONKYO from AMAZON and it was listed as "NEW". The fact is that the box had been opened before and the remote and all paperwork were taped closed-obviously not factory new. I could have selected "used" and paid less if I wanted a used stereo. Up until now I have been happy with Amazon. I'll think twice about ordering from them again. The stereo is great! I highly recommend it!!

3 out of 5 stars Will *NOT* Decode HDMI Audio.......2007-08-12

Unfortunately, I will need to return this unit. I need a receiver which will accept *and decode* HMDI audio information. All this unit can do is pass through the HDMI digital signal to another device (fine for video, but not audio).

This is necessary because I want Dolby TrueHD, my DvD player (Toshiba HD-A2) can decode the TrueHD and output the information in a linear multichannel PCM stream. The Toshiba lacks a 6 channel analog output, and I'm using that for a different player for DVD-Audio/SACD. I need a receiver which can decode the HDMI PCM audio information.

5 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-SR575 .......2007-06-02

Before purchasing this receiver, I did my research, trying to find a receiver with HDMI capability, 7.1 sound, 80 - 100 watts (this one outputs 80 watts per channel which is plenty for me) for under $500. This is the best choice on the market! Here's some information you may find useful.
This receiver has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output (i.e. to an HD TV). I have an "upconvert" DVD player (changes 480i format DVD to 1080i video resolution) attached via HDMI (video), and a digital optical (audio) cable. I have a second DVD attached as the "VCR", using composite video cables and a digital coax (audio). I use the second DVD player to play CDs. Both can be programmed in the setup of the receiver, so that the SR575 knows which cables are used for which inputs. The sound is very clear. Make sure you use the microphone to auto calibrate the speakers after your system is in place. It takes 10-15 minutes and is automatic, just start the setup and it takes care of itself. The sound will be much better than sound out-of-the box, since it calibrates for your room acoustics. Once the setup is completed, you will like the results...there are several "listening modes" that you can try out to see what sounds best in your room.
Here are a few caveats that I learned about after I purchased the receiver....
1. If you have a phonograph (turntable), then you need a pre-amp (can be purchased from Amazon for about $40). Connect the left/right RCA cables from the turntable to the pre-amp, then from the pre-amp into one of the inputs in the receiver (I use the "tape" input for my turntable since I do not have a tape deck attached - which means I program the setup of the "tape" player in the receiver for my turntable - it's simple to do).
2. Do not be confused by the Onkyo "upconvert" capability - the receiver does NOT upconvert the video from a DVD from 480i resolution to 1080i resolution - you need an upconvert DVD player for that (also on Amazon for under $100). Instead, it will upconvert the audio from one type of input to a different type of output. See the Onkyo web site and download the user's manual for more info.
One more cool feature - this receiver has satellite radio capabilities. You can buy a separate satellite turner and hook it up...OR...since I have a portable satellite radio, all I did was use the audio out line from the radio to the auxiliary in (right and left) cables, and simple as that I can listen to my XM satellite radio thru the receiver and 7 speakers.
Bottom Line: The Onkyo 575 is a very capable receiver with the latest technological innovations (as of Spring 2007) in a really good price range (appx $350). If you are looking for high quality sound with HDMI capabilities, this is the best choice. I hope this helps you out, best of luck with your audio system!

From the Manufacturer

The HT-S990THX is the first system to meet the parameters set by THX for overall system performance as opposed to separate loudspeaker and amplifier performance. In effect, the HT-S990THX represents a high-performance, powerful multichannel solution that combines the convenience of all-in-one systems with the performance of much higher priced separate components. With full THX processing capabilities—THX ASA-derived playback modes (THX Cinema2, THX Music Mode, THX Games Mode)—you can be assured that this system brings out the full potential of surround sound for all entertainment options. Equally as important, Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) gives the system a perfect base for stellar amplifier performance. Also, the HT-S990THX's compatibility with XM Satellite Radio® and the iPod® offers a completeness to this home entertainment system that has rarely been seen before.

Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic IIx: Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX.

DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital.

7.1 Multichannel Inputs: The emergence of HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs promises to bring unparalleled realism to home theater.

XM HD Surround: XM Satellite Radio is America's number one satellite radio service. It offers 160 digital channels, including 68 commercial-free, diverse music channels; more than 40 channels of premier sports, talk, comedy, children's and entertainment programming; and 21 channels of traffic and weather information. Simply plug an XM Passport System into your XM Ready A/V receiver, and activate the service to start receiving uninterrupted radio programming of your choice. Now, in conjunction with Neural Audio, XM Satellite Radio offers XM HD Surround, which provides 5.1-channel surround sound on selected programming.

XM Ready: The XM "Connect-and-Play," is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners.

NeuralSurround: Neural Surround™ represents the latest advancement in surround technology developed for music and is adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcast of surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround™ employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. System playback is scalable from 5.1 to 7.1 multi channel surround playback.

THX Surround EX: Originally developed by THX for movie theaters, this surround format enhanced the 5.1 channel surround sound by decoding two additional surround back channels. The benefit of this is immediately evident. Sound can now be positioned directly behind you, creating a more realistic 360º envelopment of sound. Fly-overs, drive-bys and other dramatic panning effects can now be experienced with more accuracy and much greater impact.

Component Video Upconversion: Converts incoming composite & S-Video signals (like a VCR to S-Video equipped TV) all the way to Component on most models. A Time-Base Correction circuit prevents picture distortion due to instabilities in the video source signal.

RI (Remote Interactive): With Onkyo's exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control.

WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound.

4 out of 5 stars The home theater system for the average consumer.......2007-07-21

I purchased this product about 3 weeks ago, and have now come to fully experience what it can do. It is a wonderful piece of equipment that is worth the money.

Pros:
The system is cost effective. For the money, you get a very good system. Sure, it's not as good as one that costs several thousand dollars, but it's much better than the standard HTIB you can find at a retail store. Remember, you always get what you pay for. If you want a cheap system that will need to be replaced often, this system is not for you. However, if you are like me and are just looking for a good system that's not going to break the bank, consider this as one of your options.

The system is also easy to set up. It comes with color coded wires and connections. The back of the receiver has all speaker connections color coded, and the colors match the wires and speaker terminals. Also, unlike most HTIB systems, the surround wires are long enough to support the room size this system was designed for. Remember, this is not a THX Select or Ultra system. It's not designed to play in large spaces (Select is for 2000 cubic feet, a 250 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling; Ultra is for 3000+ cubic feet, about a 375 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling). This system is designed for a smaller room (such as an apartment or small home). My living room is about 170 square feet (I live in an apartment).

The system is also easy to use. Just a glance at the user's manual will let you navigate through the configuration menu with no problems. Unlike other HTIB systems I have seen, the speaker distance is fully configurable, in standard or metric units. Other systems I have seen do not understand that your front speakers might be closer than your rear speakers. Instead, they would assume that this could not be possible, so if your application called for a front speaker distance of 7 feet, and a rear speaker distance of 10 feet, the receiver could not configure it. Therefore, the system did not sound correct unless you rearranged the room, or knock down walls. This system allows you to input any variation of measurements, but it's always in feet or meters. For once, I would like to see a system that had precise control of the delay, to the inch. 6 inches difference is about 0.5 milliseconds. Even though it's a small number, it seems as if the front soundstage is drastically different with differences as small as an inch between the FL/FR and center channels.

Cons:
Receiver does not support HDMI. This is both a pro and a con. First, I priced a Monster HDMI cable. There was one cable at Best Buy for $80. The good stuff started at $120. I didn't even look for anything THX certified. On the other hand, you can get a THX certified Component Video set for about $40, and a THX certified optical audio cable for about $38. From other reviews I have read, there is no noticeable difference between using HDMI and component connections.

Another con is that THX specifications call for a dipole side surround speaker, where as this system comes with a monopole side surround speaker. The side surrounds appear to be the exact same as the back surrounds. THX calls for monopole back surrounds and dipole side surrounds. This can make a difference in how enveloping the surround information is. Even though this system has monopole side surrounds, the surround effect is enveloping, but I've seen $10,000 setups that sounded much better. And this system doesn't cost $10,000 does it?

Yet another con has to do with the crossover point of the system. Ideally, you want all frequencies to blend together properly. In my setup, when using the THX demo disk, I notice a slight dip in bass output when transitioning from the main speakers to the subwoofer, then the subwoofer picks up the volume to normal as the frequency decreases. Now I'm sure I could compensate for this by spending thousands of dollars treating my room structures, purchasing equalizers, and moving the subwoofer around...but I don't want to do that...and probably neither do you. The system does not give perfectly flat response, but is withing 6 dB all the way through the transition. Also, the subwoofer is not the best suited for music. I cannot tell what class box is used (I don't want to take it apart), but it lacks the impact of a sealed box, and acts more like a vented or bandpass box. It delivers a rumbling impact when watching movies, but lacks accuracy for music reproduction. It seems as if there is a very sharp curve as the frequency gets lower, similar to a bandpass box. Listen for yourself and see what you think. Be sure to use music that has various bass frequencies.

Overall, I say this is a 4 out of 5. For those of you that want a dedicated movie theater in your house, this system is probably too small for you. For the rest of us, this is a great solution. It's an entry level high end home theater system, and the best HTIB on the market today. If you are considering going with something cheaper, consider this: This system comes with everything you need to play every audio format widely used today. It does both Dolby Digital and DTS, and adds THX to both standards (you can also listen in the native format being broadcast, with no THX). You can play this system in 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 configurations, and comes with everything necessary to matrix stereo signals into all configurations, as well as matrix 5.1 signals into 6.1 or 7.1. Basically, it's a one-stop-shop. It's one system, in one box, that plays everything. I think that's why it was designed. Maybe more consumers buy HTIB systems rather than seperate components. As far as value, I'm sure if you shop around, you might find a better seperate component system for the same money, or close to it. But what does the average consumer want? Simplicity. This one word best describes this system. Given proper speaker and seating arangements, the system does exactly what it was designed to do, yet it's simple. And what was it designed to do? Bring the movie theater experience to your living room. It does that, without any problems.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding sound.......2007-02-07

The other review issues the size of the speakers. And I agree but for the quality and volume of sound you aquire, you really won't care. THX is as good as in any movie theater. If you are looking for sound quality instead of looks, this is the way to go.

The only way you'll get better sound is going with Denon, or other much more expensive brands.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!.......2006-10-06

I was going to buy Bose 38 series and after listening to this system in a friends place, I changed my mind. The subwoofer and the receiver alone is worth the money. Bought 849.99 in Circuit City. Highly recommend it... The only drawback is the speakers are heavy and big.. If onkyo could fix it and replace them with, bose like, small speakers it would have been better for me..
