Great Camera.......2007-09-04

I have two of these cameras and they do a great job monitoring the front and rear of my house. I acutally have them outside, under the porch, though they aren't made for outdoors. We'll see how well they work when the temp drops this winter... I have them set to e-mail images while we are gone. havent' been able to get the viewing over the internet to work yet, but I think it's a router issue. Worth every penny...

can't make it work correctly.......2007-07-23

The camera is very nice, and was easy to install and be able to view on my home computer. However, it is supposed to be able to be viewed over the internet from other computers or from internet enabled cell phones. I have spent hours trying to make it work. I downloaded manuals for the camera, for my router and anything else I could think of. I emailed Panasonic, Verizon, and the camera web service and nothing has worked, so I have given up.

Good Camera ..bad manual.......2007-05-16

Bought this camera and got it installed in no time. Camera images are clean, and low light images are very good. That surprised me giving the price. It's totally configurable by web browser, and I've adjusted settings and viewed images via explorer 7 and fire fox.

The issues I have with this camera is its documentation and remote access over the net. Documentation is weak and if you run into config problems......you're dead. Unless you are versed in network configuration etc. I thought I was until I came across this camera....boy that took awhile. Accessing it over the internet requires configuring my router to allow port forwarding etc.

As for getting emails..?....I've yet to get one with images. The only emails I obtain is its reports of how many pix it takes everyday. I really wish that I have better support somewhere for this side and I would be fine.

But again, over the local lan...its great.

No need for Windows or Internet Explorer, it's a Network Camera.......2007-04-14

The BL-C1A is listed as "requiring" both Windows and Internet Explorer. After a bit of experimenting, it seems it doesn't, and is perfectly usable with Ubuntu (or indeed any OS) and Firefox. No need for Windows at all.

So, for anybody else who wants to use the BL-C1A camera with something other than Windows here's how.

First, ignore the shiny Windows CDROM in the box. Plug the camera into your router with your own network cable (they don't supply one!) and plug in the power supply. Wait a minute. If your router is 192.168.0.1, the camera should default to 192.168.0.253 (or 192.168.1.253 for a 192.168.1.1 router, etc).

From Firefox on the local network just go to the IP addess of the camera (as above) followed by ?mode=local and you should get the camera's built in web server. (The mode=local is essential, to activate it). Create an admin userid/password, hit enter. That's it.

Configuring the cameras for static addresses, different ports etc is all done via the web interface after that point, so still doesn't need Windows or IE in any way.

With a few lines written in the manual they could drop the Windows/IE requirement.

Camera works very nicely, and so does emailing, and the viewnetcam dynamic dns service (after a bit of a battle with router settings). One warning: you can't test the viewnetcam service from the same network that the camera is on, so before you think it's not working try it from elsewhere!

Camera does the job fine for the price, one point deducted for not having any non-Windows installation instructions.

Great for Home Security.......2007-04-06

I recently bought 2 BL-C1A's and 1 Panasonic Remote Video Monitoring Webcam (BL-C10A) , the big difference according to the specs is the BL-C10A can pan/tilt, the BL-C1A can't. The BL-C10A is double the price of the BL-C1A thou. But after setting up all 3 cameras I was surprised to find out the BL-C1A's have sensitivity settings for the motion detection feature, and they work Great! The BL-C10A is missing the ability to adjust the motion sensitivity. Another difference I noticed was the BL-C1A handles low light better, althought it says both handle low light the same the images on the BL-C1A seem brighter in low light.

Setting the cameras up to see each other was easy and now i can remote in and see all 3 camera's at the same time. I have sensors setup on all 3 and they work great. Now when I am at work I can alway check on my house and my family. I have images emailed to me everytime the motion sensors go off. I have also tested the image to cell phone feature and it does work fine but even with a good phone its sometime hard to see the images on a phone. Email works best in my opinion, and sense most phones can check email you can still get to the image they are just not scaled down to a phone size.

I highly recommend this camera especialy if you want to use it for motion sensing. If you must have pan/tilt the BL-C10A is also great but you lose some control on the motion sensor sensitivity.

I have had d-link and linksys camera's in the past and have foudn them difficult to set up for over the internet viewing and the equipment failed after a year or two. So far i have had this one set up for a month and it was easy to set up and follow the directions. It works well over the internet. All in All I am happy with the camera and the free forwarding ip service so far. Witih linksys you had to sign up and pay for the service that didn't ssem to work all the time and had difficulty setting it up to even work in the first place.

Fry and Panasonic have terrible customer support.......2007-06-18

I ordered this Camera from Fry's online. It arrived with no AC adapter. Fry blamed it on shipping at Panasonic. They wanted to charge me for another one and return the one I had. I can not even take it back to a local Fry store. I am told by customer insult that they are 2 different companies.
The worst part is neither Fry's or Panasonic have a forum to rate their support or their products. They can continue to provide terrible service and no one will know any better.
I applaud Amazon for having this forum. I will order this camera through Amazon. I will also order all my online electronics at Amazon.

Great webcam for remote monitoring.......2007-06-09

This product works as described and is easy to set up and control. Works just fine on Macs as well. Safari works fine with it.

keeps an eye on the house.......2007-05-19

I bought this because I was going to be living in another country for a couple months and wanted to keep an eye on the place.

It worked great, they give you a website that you can go to (with your password) and control the camera from. It moves up, down, and side to side. It does adjust for light, which worked well from dim to bright light, but it does not have any night vision, so once it's dark and your lights are off (mine were on a timer), you can't see anything. Also, it doesn't shoot tasers at anyone trying to rob the house, so if you do catch someone inside, all you can do is call the police and take a snapshot (assuming they didn't already find and unplug the camera).

The only warning I would give is that you need to make sure you have a router within an ethernet cable's distance of where you want to put it. If you're not sure, it's probably worth springing the extra $50 and getting the wireless version.

Great Camera.......2007-03-29

Bought 2 of these to watch over my house while I am at work. Setup is pretty easy, but be prepared to wait a minute after changed settings, many changes when you initial setup the camera require it to restart. Camera's work great together and the free use of [...] to access the cameras is nice. Setting up timers and sensor emails/ftp is pretty straight forward but will require a user to test and retest to get the settings just right.

Pros: Price is good for a ip camera with tilt/pan. viewnetcam.com feature is a great addition to the camera package. Works great with similar model panasonic cameras.

Cons: Multiple restarts while setting up or making changes(minor issue), limited online support/how-to's.

Nothing negative to say other than for some reason, Panasonic has specific requirements about username/password during setup. And if you forget these you are totally screwed!

I needed to watch my kids at home from the internet and wanted to be able to pan & tilt. I first bought 3 cameras from X10 for [money amount]. Bad quality picture, couldn't penetrate corporate firewalls and too dificult to adjust. After 20 days of experimenting & support calls I gave up and bought this. Got it up and running in 3 hrs., no support calls required, penetrates firewalls and really good quality video. Drawbacks - the Pan and tilt is much lesser than X10. Works on a/c only. Big plus - 802.11b rocks on my wireless network!!

I had been looking for a wireless webcam for sometime, and the reviews on the other webcams were very bad, so I didn't buy. I saw the reviews on this webcam (9 people rated it 5 stars), so I went ahead and bought it, even though it was a little more than I wanted to pay. I'm so glad I did, it was very easy to setup. The wizard was intuiative and it works so well. I couldn't be more pleased with the webcam!

Fanastic Purchase.......2007-09-12

I could not be happier with my purchase. Especially after my disastrous experience with D-Link. D-Link had claimed their camera was Wi-Fi enabled with WPA-PSK...It wasn't and I had to return the cameras purchased - was quite an ordeal. This camera does everything D-Link failed to do and more. Configuration very easy, Viewnetcam utilziation for free away from home monitoring, email forwarding. Sure, it took some periodic tweaking getting all the features to work, but once it did, it operates perfectly and consistently so. Definitely recommend this purchase.

How to set up this wonderful product.......2007-08-09

This camera is fabulous. Good resolution, features, and FREE internet access. (By-the-way, you need a router.) It is a no-brainer to set up to use in your home or office. However, if you want to view from the web, then you will need to make one or two calls. I spent two days trying to do this before I went looking for their number. There are just too many conflicts to do yourself. But don't worry. Once you have their number, its a breeze and takes only about 10 minutes! Okay, world, here is their direct tech line: 800-272-7033. If you are somewhat savvy, here is one important tip for internet access: set your port # at 5000. Now, if you have DSL (not cable broadband) you will most likely need to make a second call...to your DSL tech people. The problem is that DSL modems have a built in router which needs to be set for "bridge mode" which turns off the internal router. You can't have two routers in the same line and get this to work over the web. And you don't have their secret codes to control their modem. Again, no problem. Took about 5 minutes once I had them on the phone (they are used to this issue and well practiced).

Again, hope this is helpful. Its a wonderful product and their FREE web address is a terrific extra (I had a D-link cam and they charged an annual fee for their web connection!)

Panasonic BL-C131 Great Camera.......2007-07-31

I have looked at several wireless camera and found most of them had similar features, However, the reviews on the other cameras made me think twice. The reviews on this camera was positive and so I purchased the camera. The camera does a good job with Pan and Scan (only wish it was 180 degree) Hook-up and local viewing was simple. I did have a problem with setting it up for Internet access and found that my Vonage adapter would not let me have internet access but the tech and panasonic was excellent. He walked me thru the system and now I have Internet access. Here are some key things you need to know. The name of your wireless router must be the same on your camera setup. Don't use the default port of 80. If you have an VOIP call the tech at panasonic.

This is a great product. The motion sensor works great.

Great cam for the Mac (OSX)............2007-07-28

You can do all setup via the builtin web server - even firmware updates. There is no need for installing anything from the included (windows only) CD. Streaming MP4 or MJPEG video works right outta the box in Safari as does the static captures - no need for drivers or anything else.. Those looking for typical, painless MacOSX setup will get it with this Panasonic webcam..

Have 2 cameras and they are excellent!.......2007-09-14

Camera is excellent once you set it up wirelessly. I spent 1 hour with panasonic tech support(excellent by the way) trying to figure out why my router would not allow me to view camera online. We finally figured it out. Those guys at panasonic know their stuff. They have been up an running now for 1 month no hick ups. I view from my iphone, my families computers etc. No probs. Only negatives are: there is no sound and night cam is not very good (only 4 lux). Would highly recommend!

For surveillance you still want better resolution to identity a suspect.

Also minus a couple points since configuration software and viewer is windows Internet Explorer specific.

Doesn't support WPA encryption. Didn't want to run unsecured for obvious reasons. However, if I used WEP, the rest of the network would capped at 56Mbps and need to be reconfigured. Why should the rest of the network be slowed down because of a camera?

Compact, very easy to set up and the image is sharp and clear. Free DDNS service makes this the best buy. I have another camera, Linksys, and I had to pay for this service. I defitely will drop it when it comes up for renewal. No more Linksys camera for me!

After a few days of use..I still love it! I just found out that I can access the camera with my Mac via Firefox browser. This alone beats all other cameras in the market! Set up the motion detector to email pictures is a breeze. You can also set the camera to periodically send a picture, motion or not. The only thing that you could say it is less than the Linksys is it could not send a video. Linksys video only lasts 30 seconds anyway. Highly recommended.

This is a great camera. At first i had problems connecting it wirelessly but after working with a tech support rep from Panasonic we figure out that it was my "shared" network setting instead of "open". After he told me to change this voila! i was able to setup my three BL-C20 cameras and they are great!

There is about 10 minutes of tech support needed to set it up for a wireless router, but tech support is outstanding. Calling 800-272-7033 and stating 'IP camera' results in only about one minute of wait time, and the tech support staff is great. Setting yourself up as the administrator enables you to assign user accounts to family members that you want to have only limited access to the images. They go to a website to view the images, and for privacy you can turn their access on/off easily, or turn Internet access off altogether.

Without a static IP address you will NOT be able to view the camera from the internet. Outside of that it is a good product. The customer support on this is terrible though. You are on your own.

it works with a smartphone, but only with still images...a key detail not mentioned in any of the marketing materials. if you want streaming video to your smartphone while on the road, this is not the product for you.

I purchased this unit to allow my wife and I to check up on our baby/nanny while we're away. When I purchased this unit I had some minor issues getting it to work with my wireless network but eventually I got it up and running. My major issues with this camera is its lack of wireless security (it only supports WEP). In addition to the lack of wireless security I'm also having an issue viewing streaming video from my camera remotely. In order to view images I have to setup the camera to have a three second refresh rate. The weird thing is I'm able to view streaming video once per PC but after that I get a white screen with an error like (Error 2000/13004). I though it was a browser issue but I've had this issue on IE6. IE7 and firefox. I even tried clearing my cache, cookies, etc. but nothing worked. I even bypassed my firewall but still no luck!

I've contacted Panasonic support and unfortunately they were unable to help resolve my issue. I did learn that this model utilizes motion JPEGS to stream video but the new model (131A) uses MPEG4 and has one way audio!

All in all the camera is okay if you could get it to work with streaming video over the Internet. It has some really nice features such as the ability to store images from motion detection internally or upload them to an FTP server or even email they to you. I wish the unit was a little cheaper but besides that it's an okay unit.

Be careful, you have spend 330 for retuer, and another 333 for DLS and about 100 for cables, totally cost about 1000!!!!, though it competely does not work well
