Great camera, one common flaw..........2007-09-27

This is our 2nd Olympus Digital camera and was well worth the buy. Takes great pictures and is very easy to use. The flaw is the lack of a viewfinder. It is nearly impossible to preview the picture that you are taking in bright daylight, even with a "anti-reflective" screen protector in place. This seems to be a growing problem with new point and shoot digitals. I would have given it 5 stars otherwise. Nevertheless, it is a great camera with lots of useful, easy to manage settings built in.

Very nice camera.......2007-09-26

I think this is a great little camera. It is a big upgrade for me coming from the Kodak Easyshare I got a few years ago. I would recommend taking some time to read the little guidebook that comes along with it and playing with it before taking some real serious photos because you will want to know where some of the settings are, otherwise, the inexperienced user might not think that this camera is all that I am making it out to be. I love that I can adjust so many things in the camera to make the pictures come out the way I want them to. For one, I can change the ISO anywhere from 200 - for bright outdoor shots to 1600 for inside low light shots of my sleeping baby. And the on screen help guide is really convenient if you want to quickly change the settings from say...a close up, to a picture where the background is blurred out and you focus only on the subject. I don't see not having a viewfinder as a disadvantage because I never use it anyways. The image stablization is nice too and helps reduce the amount of blurry pictures from an unstable hand or moving object. The End.

Great LITTLE camera.......2007-09-24

Have not had that much time to enjoy this little camera, but when I have used it is fabulous, the picture quality is devine and the technology in that little case is incredible! I have experienced the outside sunshine problem that has been noted in previous reviews, but a b/ball cap for a visor and it worked great. I think we will have years of enjoyment from the memories captured on this fine device. It is Olympus quality in a little credit card size box! Am thinking a ViewFinder would have made the price a definite bargain.......but as they say......we can't have it all, so enjoy what we have!

Excellent Camera.......2007-09-24

Purchased the camera since I needed a camera that is small and will fit in my pocket, has at least a 5X optical zoom and not too expensive. I still own a 3.1 mega pixel Olympus that is still in excellent working condition despite the fact that it has been soaked by rain. The stylus 750 is beyond my expectation. Despite its size it takes excellent pictures, and on the highest resolution with a 2GB xD card it indicated about 600 pictures that I can shoot. I think the number of pictures will exceed the battery life.
Pictures came out excellent with beautiful color balance, however at full optical and digital zoom it is somewhat pixelated. I did not quite like the idea that you have to take the battery out to charge it, or buy a separate battery adapter if you want to charge it on the camera. They should have included the adapter with the camera.
Another negative comment is the fact that it does not have a normal viewfinder. In bright outdoor light it is impossible to view the scene through the LCD viewfinder.
All in all it is an excellent buy..

I am much satisfied with the quality of Olympus 750.

Found uncomfortable intially of the Image shake even with Image Stabilization ON.
Image stabilization fuction of this camera need to be improved.
When your Hand is stable/nonshaky and if u have enough time to take a snap. this Camera can produce good images.. Ligting, brightness are also good, only thing you need to play around the settings.. Go through the manual before actaually going for Outdoor Tour/Trip..

Battery backup relatively poor compared to Canon....

OK for the price i have paid.....

CD printing and other thoughts.......2007-09-22

Just got the R1800 primarily to print four-color Photoshop images/labels on CDs. Having read some of the comments, was a little concerned. However, my fears were unfounded.

The software and hardware worked flawlessly. The first CD was a little light, but that was easily adjusted. I'm very happy with this.

Also printed 12 sheets of graphics to be made into "buttons" using Kodak paper and they were fine. The "gloss" cartridge is down a bit, so I went and bought two more. The others haven't even begun to show usage yet.

On the other hand, I tried to use a sheet of Avery labels for another project, and the printer simply didn't "see" the paper. I suppose it's a weight problem.

Anyway, I'm happy with the printer. Which, by the way, is replacing an HP 1220C, which is a nice printer, and works well, but doesn't like heavier papers, and doesn't do CDs.

Don't buy this printer.......2007-08-23

If you can get this printer to work for you, you will love the quality of the output. However, as many have noted, you may end up wanting to throw it out the window. No matter how many times I try Epson's recommended procedures to get this beast working, sooner or later it refuses to print because "media out or not loaded correctly." This is a patent falsehood, but the printer remains intransigent.

By the way, Epson's fix includes deleting ALL your installed printer drivers, and then reinstalling them. Since I have two printers at home and work with five at school, reinstalling all those drivers is not a trivial task. And even then, if it works at all it only works temporarily. Then it's "media out or not loaded correctly" messages again.

Defenestration is too good for this printer.

MY INTEL MAC LOVES IT; excellent quality prints.......2007-08-08

The Epson site is beyond clear about the fact that the driver enclosed in the box WILL NOT WORK for Intel-based Macs. The appropriate driver is easy to find, download, and install from the Epson site. Our set-up, including download time, was probably under ten minutes -- and I might have overestimated by half.

The prints are superb. I bought this in order to do 13x19 prints "in house" and the only surprise is how much better prints turn out than I could possibly have expected. Simply, the price-performance ratio on this printer is outstanding.

As much use as this thing gets, it is especially helpful that the color cartridges are not "all in one". I find that it is far more economical to replace one color component. That has to be more environmentally sound, as well. Who knows how much "all" of the "in one" I've wasted before now?

It's no secret that there have been some software hitches for companies who did not understand off the bat that Macs with Intel chips would have different requirements. But the fixes on these are, in my experience, easy to locate. If you have an Intel Mac, take a minute to look around the Web for professional reviews of this printer. You'll see that Epson has solved its "issues" just fine.

DOES NOT WORK ON A MAC-Intel computers :(.......2007-08-06

I am VERY upset that Epson didn't tell me that the damn drivers don't work on a mac with an intel processor. Now I have a $600 printer that doesn't work, which I need it to for my buisness. VERY VERY VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS!!!!!!!!!!! And all of the updated drivers STILL don't work I have tried everything,,,, thanks epson for waisting my time and $$$$$

Not Mac Friendly.......2007-08-05

I bought this printer thinking that it was going to be as great as my past epson printers. Boy was I wrong! Unfortunately, I've had nothing but trouble with this printer. So far, I've only been able to print basic documents, but nothing fancy. It turns out that the driver doesn't support Intel Based Macs. So although it can print real simple documents, I can't choose the print quality when I need to print higher resolution pictures, so all my art prints are coming out horrible. I went online and downloaded the driver for the Intel based Mac and I followed the directions that Epson posted, but I still can't choose the print settings. I've had it for a couple of weeks and I'm about ready to throw it out the window! It's very frustrating and it has set me back with work because I can't print and sell my art prints. I'm sure if the driver worked, it would be a great printer, but so far I could've bought a $90 cheap printer and have gotten better prints.

This product came in a timely manner. It did not include a cable to connect to the port which should have been a requisite. Other than that the performance of this unit was excellant.

Very Good small network printer with the proper adapter.......2007-09-18

Years ago I bought the very popular Epson C80. To simplify printing from several computers in our house I bought an EpsonNet Parallel Print Server adapter (C823781) so that we could print from any PC without booting up a dedicated computer. When the C80 died about a year ago (internal ink hemorrhaging), I thought I'd have to find a new color network print solution ($$$). Then I discovered the C88 is supported by the same print server adapter! While these printers tend to waste ink, the print quality is very good and the printer has been otherwise very reliable. I have two students at home, so the C88 gets well exercised.
Also, it was easy to setup network printing for Ubuntu Linux boxes. Yesterday, during setup of an Ubuntu 7.04 box the C88 was discovered and correctly identified on my network!

impossible to install on Mac OS X.......2007-09-18

I bought this printer for my mom many months ago, and I still can't install the drivers for her eMac. The install disk didn't work. The drivers cannot even be downloaded from the website onto a Mac (don't ask me why), and I had to download and transfer them on my PC. The installation "succeeds", but the drivers still don't work, and the computer cannot see the printer. The instructions that Epson support sent me did not work. Nothing works. I've never seen a product that was so much of a pain to get working.

What we have learned to expect from an Epson printer.......2007-08-31

As with every other Epson printer we have purchased ( we currently have three in London, UK and one in California) this printer is an excellent, no problem choice. Easy to set up, totally reliable and very good quality imagery. My only complaint - it is the usual one - is the cost of the ink cartidges. It is so tempting to use the cheaper alternatives. We are particularly keen, as designers, to ensure that colours are exactly as we want them. Of course we tried alternative inks and they were hopeless. So, bite the bullet and stick with Epson, all the way!

Demands more ink when there's still ink in the Cartridges!.......2007-08-27

I absolutely HATE this printer.

Once again, the ink has run out. Why does this make me so mad? Because I just bought all 4 new cartridges (costing me over $35) less than 6 weeks ago and I haven't made very many prints. I've printed 0 photos. All my prints are mostly B&W, and I set the printer to "economy" setting on the ink. I turn the printer off when not in use (as the manual recommends to avoid drying out the cartridges). I shake the cartridges, and they're still half full.

But for some reason, this monster wants MORE INK.

For the amount of money I spend constantly refilling the ink, I might as well just but a brand new printer each time instead of buying new ink!

The MOST annoying thing about this printer is that it "locks up" if even one of the cartridges goes "empty". I want to print a B&W document, but it won't let me because the Yellow cartridge is "empty". ARGH!

If you are a casual printer, this is not the machine for you.

If you plan to print alot of B&W documents, color documents, or even (gasp!) an occasional photo, this printer may cause you to become Amish.

If you want a really shiny paperweight, this printer is just what you're looking for!

Disappointed.......2007-09-25

I bought this camera partially based on the reviews I read. While it takes good pictures and is easy to use, the software isn't worth a hoot! I am still unable to transfer photos from the camerausing Olympus Master software to my computer....the message comes up that there is no camera connected. However, i can transfer the photos using Windows with the same connection. I've read and reread the manual, connected and disconneted the camera a number of times and it still doesn't work. My other complaint is that the battery runs out really fast. It always needs recharging even though i don't use it that much. Best investment I ever made. I love the camera, love all the features and the fact that it is slim. Takes great clear, crisp pictures. Love all the shooting modes. Great everyday camera and with a 1g card it can take lots of pics. Battery life is also pretty good. One suggestions buy a good case for it, for the LCD's are sensitive.

While I was looking for a new camera, I wanted to try and not only get a brand I had heard of, but also a brand that would be backed by a great product. This camera is not only compact, but it's pictures' are clear and practically un-flawed. The settings on the camera really do help with whatever you're taking pictures of, and sometimes it seems as though the picture is postcard perfect. The shutter speed is a little slower than what I'm used to, but for the total quality of the pictures, it's fine with me. This camera is a great buy and a great product.

i got this as a present back in october of 2006. it broke 3 months ago!! only 9 months of limited use. i am so upset. when my boyfriend bought it, it was $350!! now, it will cost $150 to fix and its worth $150 now. i called olympus and because we dont have the receipt, they wont take it in. they need a proof of purchase, i said the camera is the proof. i have the warranty card, the box, everything except the receipt. i will NEVER buy an olympus again. the customer service are extremely rude and they dont even back up their product. dont buy this camera- you will be sorry.

this camera can't be beat for the price, full featured, compact, weather resistant. My order got lost with UPS and AMAZON would not help me track it down or provide any support to resolve. I finally worked direct with vendor (Capital Electronics) and they immediately replaced it. No complaints with their service at all so why use a middleman when they offer no value.

Ink Hog.......2007-09-27

This printer prints a very nice photo. Its no slower or faster than any other printer in its price range. Expect to replace 2 ink cartridges for every 75, 4x6 photo that you print. That will cost you at least $32. That comes to a cost of $.42 per 4x6 print and $1.40 per 8x10 print. Please note that is the cost of ink not paper.

When printing photos it only uses the LightMagenta, LightCyan and Yellow cartridges. Even if you print black and white photos, only those three are used. The Other 3 colors seem to come into play when you print Text and images on plain paper.

I have tested the printer on several papers and found the Claria Ink has some issues with some glossy papers.

The print head has the ability to print different size drops so you will get exceptianl prints.

Due to the high cost of ink I converted my R380 over to a Niagra Ink flow system. My ink now costs me .015 per 4x6 and .05 per 8x10. If you plan on doing a lot of printing I sugest you look into this system.

All the other issues that come with a Ink jet printer. IE it must be used on a regular basis or the print head will clog.

Epson's printers when altered are great.......2007-09-23

The epson cd dvd printers and others are great when the ink problem is solved. I just added a continuous ink supply with sponge-less cartridges for $50 which includes 720ml of ink, 1/10 the cost of ink when bought in bulk bottle and lasts longer. Go to ebay and put in continuous ink and your printers name. Or search "Super Smart Electronics" on ebay. Enjoy

Do NOT buy an Epson product on-line they have awful customer service and no 1-800 number. My printer did not reconize the ink and after spending 15-20 minutes on hold was told that the ink was bad and they would send fresh ink to me. Well I called weekly and have not received the ink yet a month later. But since I ordered it online, I didn't want to pay to ship it back just yet.

not an economical printer..eats up too much ink.......2007-09-26

If you turn off and turn on the printer or don't use the printer for at least a day, it will go through self-cleaning cycle at the first print job. This takes up about 1/5 of your ink cartridges.

I ran out of ink (which came with the printer) in less than 2 weeks and what's even worse is that most of the ink were used for cleaning. I didn't notice it was using too much ink when actually printing.

This produces an excellent print on DVD but consumes just too much ink.
I think this printer is just a decoy to sell more expensive Epson ink cartridges. I am looking for another alternative because I am not spending over $90 a week for supplying ink to this printer.

Love this camera - suits me perfectly! Only negative thing is getting the right setting, some of the pre-sets just dont work for what theyre meant to, I find I use different ones for different things. Otherwise great.
I randomly just use a tennis sweat band around the camera to protect the screen when I throw it into my handbag/ sit on it etc! I also leave the sweat band on while diving as you just pop it towards you and it rests on the wrist strap while you take pics... (dries quickly but there is the bonus of sweat bands coming in twos!) just a suggestion :) While it may not be the most cool looking thing - I do know my camera is safer on the table in a bar than it would be without it!! Oh yeah - I also saw a float thing you can attach to the camera... just about to buy it now... if I can find it again!! Ha ha! Anyways - enjoy the camera - I sure am!!

Delightful sturdy camera.......2007-09-11

I bought the Olympus Stylus 720 sw and quickly realized that 10 feet deep is not deep enough! I didn't kill the camera, but as I videoed my swim deeper chasing marine life I started to think, "Am I deeper than 10 feet?"

Well, that was my honeymoon and my camera was stolen on the trip home. I bought the 770 as a replacement, and I'm not worried about going 33 feet down.

There's enough settings in this camera to suit any condition you want to take pictures in.

This is a wonderful camera, my 5th Olympus digital.

I just got this camera back from Olympus after breaking the usb door (it got knocked off my desk when attached to the usb cable and landed on my tile floor) which was replaced with no charge.

Olympus 770sw ROCKS.......2007-09-06

This is a great camera. Purchased for a recent trip to Maui and use in the water. This took great snap shots on land and in water. We used several times per day snorkeling and the pictures were great. As good or better than anything I have had using the disposable cameras (plus you get the benefit of instantly seeing what you just shot).

The lack of a view finder made it tough at times (but realistically, how easily would you use a view finder under water?) On land the screen was bright enough to easily take pictures in all weather.

There are higher quality cameras out there and if you are looking for those type of photos, go buy an SLR. If you are looking for a rugged camera to take on the go, use on land and in water, and get decent quality prints, then this is the camera for you. The price from Amazon was up to $80 cheaper than I could find it any where else.

great sports/water camera.......2007-09-03

This is an excellent sports/water camera.

Be certain though why you buy it. If you are looking just for a compact camera without the waterproof capability you should look elsewhere as this model may not be for you.

You can take this camera in the water (33 feet), treat it badly (to a certain extent) drop it and the pictures will come out superb. It has 27 shooting modes, you can take it to extreme tempetures. So it is directed towards sports andactivities.

On the other hand the menu is not the best possible (for example to set a specific shooting mode you have to set it everytime you turn the camera on as the internal memory does not hold it). The flash takes some time to reload so night pictures as not as fast.

So the five star rating is for the sports camera. If you want such a camera then this could be it. If not look for a different one.

We purchased this camera in December 2006. I don't remember what prompted me to buy this digital camera. I remember feeling a little frustrated that I couldn't find a camera that had absolutely stellar reviews across the board.

The main function of the camera would be for point and shoot opportunities for my family of six. Although I was interested in getting a camera that could grow with my interest in photography.

I initially loved the solid feel of the camera. It was also easy to learn and use. However, I immediately noticed that if the lighting conditions weren't perfect and one of my kids moved when I took the picture, (which is inevitable), they would look extremely blurry. Maybe there was some feature I could have used to correct this. But as a point and shoot it would not automatically correct itself in low light situations.

The camera was stolen a couple of months later. I bought the Fuji FinePix E900 to replace it and the performance is outstanding compared to the Olympus Stylus 1000.

I bought the camera from Adorama, great pricing, Also, bought from best buy the 1gb memory, so it gave me the opportunity to film a meeting for 35 minutes, of course If I had a tripod the film would have come better. So far I love taking pictures of the clouds, good resolution, still pending to review the CD instructions that came with the box.
I would highly recomend the camera.

I actually wanted to buy this camera for me and I asked my Godfather to buy it for me as a present. The first time I used it is when we went to a vacation. I really love the quality of this camera and its features. I was able to take photos with good quality and right lighting.

I was looking for a small camera that allow me to take quality pictures but I did not want to spend a lot of money. THIS CAMERA WAS THE ANSWER. I've had this camera for the past 4 months and everyday I'm more convinced that is the best investment I've ever made, I never leave the house without it, no joke! Size is perfect, the screen on the back its a nice size, quality pictures, battery life is also good, great to take pictures in ANY setting from outdoors to candle light dinners. On simple terms...LOVE IT!

FE-230 7.1MP Camra.......2007-08-26

I Bought this camra to replace a former one that never gave me clear pictures 10 MP (fuzzy) and even in it's good days was hard to operate. I was turned off to digital cameras untill a friend bought the Olympus and let me try it, I had to have one after that.

This camera takes awful photos. I have yet to take a photo that isn't fuzzy, grainy and dim. I do not recommend this camera. I'm returning it ASAP.

Olympus used to make good-quality digital cameras, but their product lines in the last couple of years have been emphasizing the wrong set of features. The company tries to out-do the others by making tiny digital cameras -- the FE-230 is probably the smallest real digital camera I've seen -- you have to see it in person to believe it. It packs over 7 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom that also works in movie mode, and a number of useful shooting modes. It's also very easy to use.

Unfortunately, the picture quality, which Olympus should have invested money in improving, is very lacking. Still images all have this blurry or fuzzy look to it, even when shot on a tripod. There's something not quite right with the lens. I guess it's both because the camera's super-super-compact body demands a tiny lens, and optical physics tells us that a tiny lens often screws up the image quality (by bending and deflecting light too much), and because Olympus uses some cheap lens (the camera is made in Vietnam). Compare this to Fuji's and Sony's just-slightly-bigger models and you'll see the latter companies use much better lenses which are probably no bigger than the one on the FE-230.

The upshot is, the FE-230 takes incredibly dull and fuzzy pictures, as if the camera cannot focus properly. If you are in sales (e.g., a real estate agent) this is a good pocketable camera to carry for business. But if you want to take pictures for your own photo albums, skip this. Get super-slim cameras from Sony, Canon, Fujifilm, or Casio instead.

(Also, this camera uses the xD-card flash memory, which in my previous experience with lots of Fuji cameras is not very reliable and is definitely quite slow, esp. at capacity of 1GB or more.)

We bought this last night to have as a simple point and shoot camera for my purse and to use when we are out and about. It doesnt even FOCUS! No matter what we do, this doesnt work. Taking it back TODAY! Do not waste your time or money on this camera.
