First, there is a small level of computer knowledge required to really use this thing at its full potential. Not much, just the ability to drag and drop files in windows. If you can do that, then you do not have to have your player tied down to any software, you can mix and match file types within album folders if you so choose, something that would melt itunes or windows media. The radio is excellent, the battery is decent, the screen is nice, the sound is very good. It looks nice, survives falls easily. The ability to read text files and record voice is good for students. Plus if you carry this around, and you dont really need a thumb drive.
so why only two stars? Cause the longest I have ever heard one of these things lasting was just under two years. Generally the firmware fails somehow and you can no longer transfer files. The mini jack is not of the highest quality (when obviously the mini jack should be the most durable thing about any portable music player.) If you do get one for like 50$ or something be sure to carry around a small paper clip btw, you will need to reset it semi regularly.

I own this, and 2 of my friends own them. They seemed like a great deal 2 years ago, better than the ipod of the time. 3 out of 3 are now almost useless. huge problems uploading files. huge problems with hardware. huge problems with sound and playback.

Purchased refurbished 8/07 with my Vista laptop. I like it but struggled with it the first 4 hours, reformatted it (nice feature) a few times using firmware updater program (download from iRiver) and started over. Once you understand it, it is actaully straightforward, but not as intuitive as hoped. Instructions say it works only with Win Media Player 10 but actually works great w/ the latest version 11. My advice - spend time cleaning up Id3 tags (Title, Artist, Album, etc.) before Sync-ing mp3s. Those tags end up being your folder structure for browing the players mp3 folders (by album, artist, etc.). Had trouble prior to id3 tag cleanup, created an inaccesible 'Unknown Artist' folder. My experience, the program that comes with the player for Windows Explorer like-functionality (Copy/Paste mp3s) wouldn't work on both my XP and my Vista laptops (shows 'Disconnected'). Actual Windows Explorer browsing to the player like a USB drive locked my unit up forcing me to push the reset/restart button (with a paper clip) so don't bother, stick w/ Sync-ing in WMP 11. What you save in $$, you'll pay back time spent understanding and making it work. iPod 30 GB more expensive but way easier interface

Do not purchase an iriver!!!! It will make you miserable and you will end up spending more money than you would have had you bought yourself an ipod and here's why:
1-the iriver works with windows media player (wmp), the worst media player software on this planet. This software is designed to either give you a heart attack or to make you throw your laptop across the room so that you'd buy a new one. It is hard to create playlists in wmp and when u create them, upon subsequent syncing, wmp changes these playlists almost randomly. Some songs get doubled for mysterious reasons. It truly is a puzzle. Everytime you update your playlists or want to simply upload songs onto your player, you'll end up spending an entire weekend, and that's assuming that things are working fine.
2-the iriver firmware has some serious bugs. If you are like the rest of us (majority of iriver owners), then make no mistake, at some point within a year, you will spend an entire weekend downloading and tweaking your playlists only to realize that the iriver will have stopped working. You will turn It on and it will show a blue screen with a clock and an ominous print "system initializing, please wait", which means that you have reformat the player, which means that you'll need to re-upload everything that took you so long to upload in the first place.
3-within 1.5 years, you will realize how terrible iriver is and how stressful wmp is. This will force you into purchasing an ipod. At the end, you'll end up spending the money on the new ipod, in addition to the money wasted on the iriver.
The take home message is:
Spend the extra 200 and buy an ipod; otherwise, you'll end up spending more. If you do not believe me and you think that I am just a mean disgruntled customer who's out there to get iriver, then forget what I said and do the research yourself. Go to google and type in keywords such as "system initializing", "playlists", "freezing on start up"...etc. you will see for yourself that the iriver is a problem, and wmp is even a bigger problem.
Note that when you're synchronizing, all hell breaks loose due to:
1-wmp changes the playlists almost randomly.
2-some files are supposedly transferred to the iriver but they just don't show up in the iriver. You will be puzzled and confused, not knowing what to do.
3-all of a sudden, playlists double in wmp and when you're synchronizing, not all playlists appear in iriver. It's all random I swear. The weirdest thing you'll experience.
4-this is my most dreaded: you're synchronizing, and all of a sudden, iriver encounters a file extension that is not supported by the player. The synchronization processes freezes and the player freezes too. Wmp may also freeze. And yet wmp, tell you "synchronization is progress" when in fact it's not. You cannot refreash wmp and you cannot disconnect the usb and you cannot turn off the player itself. You're forced to turn off your computer by ctr-alt-del method and to reset the player using the paper clip method. It is extremely stressful and time consuming. You will be angry and stressed out because you will feel that you did something wrong, when in fact it's the system that is so wrong that there is just nothing you can do to make right or smooth.
Be a smart shopper and don't even consider iriver mp3 players, unless you are a masochist and you enjoy torture and stress.
Little by little, it is becoming very clear to everyone that apple products are better even if they are more costly. After all, I truly believe that apple products are not only costlier due to sleek design but also due to better performance.
Piece of Junk.......2007-08-01
I gave it a rating of 1 because that was the lowest choice available. Amazon didn't give me the option of a negative number. I received my first (of 3) as a gift & it lasted about 1 month before it completely froze up & stopped working. Because one corner of the cover refused to stay down, I optimistically hoped that it had been dropped and damaged in the store or in shipment, so I replaced it with an identical model. 2nd one worked for 11 months before it stopped working. Since it was under warranty for 1 more month, I sent it back. Whether iRiver replaced it with a new one or repaired the old one, I don't have a clue. I just received a player back from them without any explaination about what was done. It worked for about 2 months, before it stopped working. No attempts at resetting or reformatting have worked. So now all I have basically is a $300 paperweight. I will never buy from iRiver again.

I have owned a total of six iRiver's over the years. My first is a 40GB unit that has been going strong for over four years. The next two were smaller 1GB units and although they are still working, my kids wanted more capacity so we bought two H10 20GB units. They are going on two years old and haven't had one issue. Lastly, I bought my wife a 30GB unit about 1 1/2 years ago and she's never had an issue with it.
The thing we like best about the IH series is that they are recognized by your PC's USB port as just another drive. It couldn't be easier to manage your video and music files them simply using Windows Explorer to copy and past files to your iRiver.
Maybe I've been lucky or others have been unlucky but either way, I'd take these iRiver units over the ipods any day. Apple has tried to control how you use the unit in order to boost their profits. I like them but wouldn't take one over the iRiver's.
What an expensive mistake........2007-06-11
I bought an iriver H10 20GB in Nov 2005. It froze up and required resetting within the first week. I returned it only to receive another one just like it the next month. Neither unit ever worked when I wanted it to. It constantly froze up and/or turned itself on (even in lock mode) only to run down the battery. Most upsetting is that I spent $270 on an MP3 player that NEVER worked and then had to spend another $250 on an iPod this February. Good news- the iPod has never failed! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON iRIVER PRODUCTS.

In October 2006 my Iriver H10 died a couple of days before my warranty expired. I contacted Iriver about it and did not get ANY technical support whatsoever. You don't get a person when you call and the ebox wasn't helpful either. Finally, after 2 months of being given the runaround, they said that they'd replace my H10. I mailed it back to them in December 2006. I then received an email stating that I should allow UP TO 3 weeks for my replacement to be shipped. It is going on NINE weeks and I still have no player. In my ebox I received a message saying that they were sorry for the delay in my response, but that my case had been assigned to someone who is no longer with the company and was overlooked. I was then instructed to call or email them and they would "look into the matter". This company's customer service department is TERRIBLE. I had liked my player alright before it died, but trying to get the matter resolved has definitely been the biggest hassle I've ever had in dealing with a company like this.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ANY IRIVER PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regretfully, I bought an H10 20GB some time ago. Within the first couple months it died so I call iriver and made arrangements to send it back. It took several weeks to get it back. The one that came back was dead out of the box. I spent about 3 days trying to reach iriver to send this one back. The guy I spoke to told me that this item was seeing a lot of defects and returns. That was about 1 month ago. They said they sent a replacement - it never got here? Now I cannot get any response from iriver. I like to go to stores to see products then go to AMZN for the prices - iriver's stuff is not anywhere to be found in any of the major chain stores... these guys are going out of the game....

I've had this player for only a few months. It worked fine for only a little while then it lost a system file. I've had to reformat the hard drive 3 times since then, losing all my music files each time. After each reformat, I install new firmware. The player locks up frequently requiring it to be reset and then it loses a system file. I am ready to throw it in the trash.

I really like everything about this mp3 player but mine quit working after like a week . I had to send it back and Im waiting for refund . I read these had problems but took a chance and now will just go look at ipods . It will rock you if it works for you .

This is an amazing piece of technology, and an awesome price. The sound quality is great, the user interface is easy to understand and very intuitional (it doesn't take a lot fo thought...), and of course the capacity is amazing. I have about 1300 songs on it right now and plenty of room for a lot more. Only problem is that every now and then it has to be reset and it can be a bit glitchy, but that's pretty mch the way it is with all mp3 players.

This is crap after about 9 months. If you dont mind paying 150 for something that doesn't last, go ahead and buy this. BUT TRUST ME. THIS IS A PIECE OF CRAP. I really like the product, its very simple and nice to use. Comes with everything you need to use it, no buying extra things. I love the color screen and the radio, and even the Text reader is good keeping work out routines.

Don't waste your money!!!.......2007-01-31
I am the unhappy owner of several H10's and initially there were minor problems, but the closer they got to the end of the warranty period, the more problems they started having. Problems include freezing up for no apparent reason, scrolling in Chinese, and the most irritating is when the "system files are missing" and you have to reinstall the firmware and redownload ALL of your music (does this alot). The company doesn't believe in customer service - you can't get through on the phone and they take days to respond to email. I have returned two because the hard drives crashed and it took 3-4 weeks to get them back, and then one of them crashed again as soon as I got all the music redownloaded and I had to return it and wait another 3 weeks. I have a problem with one that has now gone out of warranty and iRiver told me they won't touch it and to look for a repair shop online. So save yourself alot of headaches and time, not to mention money, and don't buy an H10 player.

I bought anthis unit (I10) from iriver. It stopped working after 3 weeks of usage without any reason!!!, I sent 3 emails to customer service and they never even respond!!! I have been trying to contact the customer service phone number and the IVR doesn't even work it-is-a fake IVR there is nobody in there!!!! Can you beleieve??
Unfortunately this unit was bought directly from the iRiver online store and not using Amazon. I assume that amazon might have been able to help with this bad supplier.
I feel so bad for trusting this kind of company and now I will have to buy an iPod and spend much more money.

Don't waste your money. What iRiver doesn't tell their customers is that once the battery goes dead, the system is useless. I will never buy one of their products again and I'm doing my best to inform everyone out there that they'll be tossing their money in the trash by purchasing any iRiver products. My system cost me $340.00 and it is now as useless as the customer service department at iRiver
The Pros and Cons.......2006-08-01
Okay, lets just get to it:
CONS:
1. For some odd reason that I've tried to fix many times, it wont let me load all my pictures.
2. Froze on me tons of times, and the reset button is really small so I have to bring a paper clip or an earing with me if I want to be able to un-freeze it.
3. The adapter/ charger is a bit clunky to carry around, and for charging you have to connect the two and it gets to be a nusance.
4. The colour choices are kind of limited.
5. Dosent work with itunes.
6. The headphones sometimes freeze up when I change the volume or something else.
7. You cant see the album cover art.
PROS:
1. Superb sound quality. You can costumize your own, or choose one of the many already preset types.
2. Nice size, not huge, but fits in your hand nicely.
3. Tells time, alarm, date etc...
4. Has a great radio tuner and you can have your favorite stations set as preset stations.
5. I found the touch pad pretty easy to get used to (though some people said that it was really difficlt, I guess it just deoends on what your used to using.)

Overall, pretty solid........2006-09-12
I got the iRiver h10 about three weeks ago. Overall, I'm loving it.
The controls look really weird at first, and are a bit clunky to get used to. But after a few minutes of playing with it, they're astonishingly intuitive. I tried using the controls with my left and right hands; no difficulties there.
The screen looks great. This would mean more to me personally if I needed to see anything on there, but it's nice to know that I have that option and is probably a pro for a lot of people. Sound quality is very, very good. I used the earbuds the player comes with for a while, and while not astonishing, they're good. There are something like 30 preset EQs. I think that's kind of excessive, but whatever.
It comes with a somewhat thick rubbery skin that has a belt clip attached to it; I put that on right away. Some people have complained about control issues with it on, but I haven't had any.
Now for the few drawbacks:
1. The h10 likes to freeze. It's not a problem when that happens, you just have to stick a paperclip in to the reset hole and it's good as new, but it's rather irritating sometimes. This was more of a problem in the beginning, but then again I may have been doing something really stupid with it. This is only my second mp3 player; my first was a 512mb flash player (from iRiver) that was completely different.
2. Organizing. It says the player will only recognize tracks put on it using Windows Media Player. I encountered some difficulties with this. First of all, WMP wanted to sync _all_ my files to the player, which made some problems. Second, you can't do anything to the files except play them unless you're connected to a computer. I'm going to see if the iRiver Music Manager program will work; that program is very nice and intuitive. Drag and drop, rename files without a problem, organize easily. If it does, I would strongly recommend downloading it off of iRiver's website.
3. Can't delete tracks off the player unless you're connected. I sort of addressed that above but it is rather annoying.
So the iRiver h10 20 GB mp3 player gets 85/100. The only real cons are the software.

I bought the unit because I wanted recording and fm capability. The H10 is beautiful and it looks very solidly made, much stronger than Ipods. However, it frozed up and when I finally found out how to unfreeze it from the web, all information on it was gone. The telephone support is only mon-fri to 5pm. I sent several emails to the company but I am still to get a response.

I have had my Iriver H120 for almost a year now and I absolutely love the thing. I have friends who own IPods and every one of them has something about my H120 that they wish their IPod would be able to do. Like voice recording. The options on the H120 are really really good. I've recorded concerts (using a external booster mic) and received decent results, better than what you'd expect using a hand-held MP3 player to record a concert.
Plus the internal mic is great for class and most situations where you'd need to record quickly. Also, I've had two units die on me (not such a great thing, really) but the amazing thing is that both times, Iriver simply sent me a new unit without any hassle or such. I just emailed them with what happened, a couple of days later I get a response, then an hour later I get an RMA approval and instructions, then two days later I receive the new unit even before I've sent off the defective unit. I can't complain about that!
I definately recommend this product. The sound quality is exceptional - however, I do recommend purchasing new headphones and IT doesn't have all of the accessories that an Ipod has..so that is something to consider.
But if faced with the choice, I'd choose Iriver again.

So I've only had this H10 for about 1 month, but so far I am very impressed. The sound quality is fantastic, even with the cheep earbuds that they send you. Downloading the music is excessively easy. When I got the H10 all that I had to do was install WMP v10, plug in my H10, and in less than 1 hour all of my music was synchronized onto my player.
The radio feature, which is the main reason I bought this over an ipod, is okay. The reception is decent, as long as you arent in some big building like a gym, unfortunately. That being said, it works great when I am walking around outside, and gets all but 1 of the stations I like.
I havent tried many of the other features, except I'd like to say that the picture quality on the image viewer is rather good. Also, I'm impressed that I can upload entire text files onto it and read them.
If you purcahse this player, make certain to charge it immediately after you get it. Also, never run the battery down to empty, this appears to have caused problems for others.
I can't attest to this products durability, since I've only had it for one month. Just don't drop it, step on it, sit on it, or pour liquids on it and it seems not to break.
Overall, my satisfaction level is very high. I can definitely recommend this product.
