1 out of 5 stars Non-existent customer service... avoid Microtek.......2007-08-09

I almost bought the i900, but wound up buying the i800 instead. You can read my full review under the i800 page, but basically I've had a pretty terrible experience with this company. My scanner suddenly broke after a couple of months, and the only way to contact their tech support is to wait until they email you back which seems like it takes anywhere from three days to two weeks. My replacement scanner had very dirty glass on the inside surface.

It seems like many people are having these same problems. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.

4 out of 5 stars Good Quality but a bit slow.......2007-06-27

After dealing with one dud they sent out to me, I got one that works and am quite pleased. I'm using this mainly for the slide scanning capability. The only issue I've had so far is with the software. They send you two programs you can use; Microscan and Silverfast. Microscan is generally the quicker program but Silverfast has superier options including an impressive dust and scratch removal option.
Apart from a few heavy clicks, it's a very quiet machine.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful, There is no repair service available........2007-05-24

I purchased my Microtek i900 in August 2005. This week it decided not to turn on. I may have used to copy 250 pages or negatives in this period of time. I contacted the service department for Microtek who send you to an online repair service that will give you an email response in 48 hours. Turns out that the unit that I paid over $500 for is out of warranty and there is NO repair service for Microtek in the United States! The only thing I can do with the unit is junk it. Amazing waste of good money to make 250 copies. They do offer you a telephone number to call to get a "discount" on another i900 or upgrade to another Microtek unit. Why would I bother with no repair service available. I understand that when your unit breaks, they will give you a refurbished replacement. No Thanks!!! Never Again....

3 out of 5 stars Solid but Slow.......2007-01-24

The quality and clarity of scans is excellent for a mid-range flatbed scanner. The options to scan reflective, photo negatives, and transparencies of all sizes made this an attractive purchase. The cover can also be raised for book scans. But it seems interminably slow, even though it will do background scanning, the wait time is excruciatingly slow. Rather than asking it to auto correct which takes even longer to process, I export the scans into Photoshop to make the necessary adjustments. Also the crop tool is quite cumbersome compared to Umax's lowest level scanner. Nevertheless, the ScanMaker i900 is a solid, sturdy flatbed, but oh so slow!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product...especially for the price!.......2007-01-24

I purchased this scanner to complete a project of scanning a large collection of my grandmothers slides. I wanted something with good quality and the ability to scan multiple slides at a time. The reviews I read on this product both here on Amazon and also other independant reviews on the web were very good so I decided to give it a try.

I must admit I should have read the specs on size a little better to know what I had coming. It was delivered to my neighbor's house while I was out of town and when I returned they knocked on the door and told me that my package arrived but that it would take two people to carry! It was more because of the size of the box needed to safely ship it, but it was much larger than I expected...definitely not the small footprint desktop scanners I was used to.

If you have only used consumer level scanners in the past like I had, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to learn what works best for the various settings, etc... It took me a couple days to really get the hang of it but once I did I was able to scan over 500 slides at a very high quality in a few days. Even with the ability to load multiple slides in the tray at a time the scanner still treats each one individually with regard to most of the settings and does a full scan separately for each image.

The output quality was amazing, just make sure you have plenty of storage space because at the highest resolution settings you can easily get file sizes over 30MB from a slide. Larger orginals produce even larger files. I scanned directly to a 400GB "My Book" and it worked great. I was able to play back the scanned images on a projection screen for my family to watch with almost the same pristine quality that the original slides had. Only a true professional or avid amatuer would have been able to see the difference.

A few other tips...be sure to have a good anti-static photo brush and possibly a can of air to remove all traces of dust from your originals and the scanner glass.

I'm thrilled with this product and even more thrilled that I was able to preserve some very precious images at a fraction of the cost of having them scanned professionally!

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE !! Microtek does not repair if there is a problem.......2007-09-17

Our Microtek scanner lasted about 18 months before it had problems with the light and focus. Then the light burned out and started to smell like it there was an electrical fire. We called Microtek and they told us that they do not repair or replace these products. Out of luck - and out of a lot of money for an unsupported inferior product. Do your homework - there are a lot of reviews and "opinions" which describe this very problem. Nevermore - Microtek !

1 out of 5 stars STILL NO DRIVER FOR VISTA.......2007-08-30

We have this scanner at work. Unfortunately, it hasn't been used for the last couple months because there is still no driver for Windows Vista. They have been bumping back the expected release date for a driver for at least three months. If their developers are so slow, or they didn't have access to Vista (which has been available to retail since what January), they should at least put a realistic release date. This scanner is too expensive to have to wait indefinitely for what would seem to be baseline support.

4 out of 5 stars Great once up and running..........2007-06-07

A great price for a large format scanner and seems to work well once I finally got it hooked up. There is not a Vista driver for this scanner yet (one is in the works), so I first tried hooking it up to my old XP computer. All software loaded ok, and the computer recognized the scanner, but everytime I tried to use it, the computer froze. So, I carried it down to the old Windows 2000 computer stashed in the basement, loaded the software (note: the Adobe Photoshop Elements version bundled with the scanner only works with XP or later operating systems...not 2000), hooked the scanner up and everything is working smoothly at this time. I sure hope the Vista driver is available soon.

2 out of 5 stars Nice - when it worked.......2007-03-22

I've purchased two of these over the past year, and both of them had the lamp fail within the first 3 or 4 months of very light use. Sure, it's an inexpensive tabloid size scanner, but combine the quirky, buggy software with terrible technical support and a product that breaks after a short time of use and I wish I had bought something else. Even if it's double the cost.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value But Noisy.......2007-02-22

After some comparative shopping, at less than half the price of newer models, the 9800XL seemd to be the best value in tabloid scanners since I was interested in reflective scans and didn't need optical resolutions beyond 1200 dpi (600 dpi 24 bit color 12"x12" TIFF files are over 150 MB! Even if that doesn't exceed your software limit, most PCs will have a hard time handling the files). I'd only recommend higher resolution units if you plan to scan slides or negatives in which case you probably want at least 2800 dpi (I like my Epson V700).
On the plus side:
+ original setup went smoothly under Windows XP Pro using the FireWire interface
+ calibration is easy and works fine (see below)
+ scan times are acceptable (~3 min for straightforward 600 dpi 24 bit color 12"x17" scan)
+ Digital Ice is useful even if scan times increase by roughly 2-5x
Neutral:
o the adjustment options took some getting used to; initially you "reset" them often and start over until you get the hang of it
o creating and saving custom settings wasn't explained well, but once I figured it out, it worked well and saved time
Negatives:
- THE DISPLAYED PREVIEW IMAGE DOESN'T MATCH THE SCANNED IMAGE VIEWED WITH OTHER SOFTWARE ON THE SAME COMPUTER AND MONITOR!!! It tends to be darker making it very difficult to adjust scanner settings to achieve the desired result. You end up doing more test scans than would otherwise seem necessary.
- scanner is noisy; the combined low-frequency buzzing and high-pitched whirring takes some getting used to
- the supplied drivers and software worked fine but updating to the "latest drivers" from the MicroTek website caused my system to lock up with "Virtual Memmory" errors that couldn't be resolved until the software was completely removed, the MicroTek folder was manually deleted, and the software was reinstalled (and now some of my startup utilities don't!). I informed Microtek but never heard back.
- the pop-up "no scanner attached" notice from the MicroTek scanner server is annoying ("Duh, I know that!")
Other comments:
> 9800XL with the transparency unit offers some additional attractive software; LizardTech document fractal compression software is tenpting but couldn't find ample background and reviews/recommendations that would help me decide to pony up the extra cash.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work with Mac.......2007-08-06

The Scanmaker s 450 looks to be a relatively inexpensive, but versatile high resolution scanner. Unfortunately, the software that comes with this Microtek scanner does not work with the Mac, OSX 10.4 operating system. The first time I installed the scanner and software, it worked. However, after one or two scans, the software (Microtek ScanWizard(tm) 5, v 7.56) could not find the scanner. At this time the scanner was visible in System Profile. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software sometimes (but not always) got it working again. I emailed Microtek support (there is no telephone support), and they responded quickly. However, nothing they suggested fixed the problem. When the scanner worked it appeared to do a pretty good job with reflective images. (However, there doesn't appear to be a way to reduce moire patterns with the software.) Surprisingly, it did an excellent job with OCR of text, even though the information with the scanner would lead one to believe that the OCR software only works with Windows. Finally, VueScan software does not work with this particular Microtek scanner. I was able to return the scanner to PC Universe with no problems.

Bottom line: If you own a Mac, don't buy the Scanmaker s450.

1 out of 5 stars Vista? Do not buy this scanner.......2007-07-31

I have had this scanner since March of 2007. But, I cannot use it because Microtek does not have a driver for Vista and the scanner does not work.

Do not buy this scanner.

The company's support is abysmal; it is non-existent. They have done absolutely nothing to get the scanner working despite calls and provide no information. The date that the drivers were to be ready has come and gone.

An expensive doorstop.

1 out of 5 stars dirty, broken, terrible customer service.......2007-06-10

Unit came in with dirty scanner glass, and scanned with off color along one side. Shortly after install, unit failed to work. New drivers didn't help, nor did their customer service: no phone calls, only email, and no response after two weeks! Fortunately I was able to send the unit back and get a refund. Buy HP, not Microtek!!!

3 out of 5 stars I wonder about reliability.......2007-05-13

I bought this scanner recently and a few days into the use, it stopped working. I tried everything to make it work. Suddenly, like magic...it started to work again. I don't know if this is isolated or widespread.

1 out of 5 stars Lousy printed instructions.......2007-03-25

I have yet to get this scanner working. Granted I have not spent more than a day working on it but it is not intuitive. I have e-mailed Microtek with several questions (you cannot contact them any other way) and have received a response advising me to look at several downloads on their website. The downloads are the same instructions included in the box with the scanner when purchased. At the moment all I want to do is to use the scanner as a copier. There don't seem to be any instructions for that process, only for scanning, and those aren't great. At this point, I'm very disappointed in my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome scanner.......2007-03-20

This is an excellent scanner -- works like a charm. The only caution I have is to put the most basic of the packaged software in as it is the only one that allows the front buttons on it to operate. It's also freakin' HUGE! Does 8x14 paper, and up to 8x10 transparency scans -- excellent quality!

This is the scanner used for American Art Archives

I've had this scanner for nearly two years now (it replaced a SCSI Microtek that did fail after several years of intense use). I'm using it on a Macintosh G5 dual 2gig, mostly for Photoshop, web, and OCR. It's much faster than the SCSI version and running with a fast Mac, there's no hicups in any foreground applications while scanning at 300 dpi (the only setting I need).

It's not unsual for American Art Archives do to 50 scans in a day. The Microtek just keeps on keeping on.

My one quibble is that the Scanmaker software has a few nagging interface oddities, like not being able to just hit enter/return to start a scan. Also, it's best to overview each item before scanning as if you just scan page after page, even if each page has similiar images, the software blows out all images after the first scan. What's up with that?

If you need a workhorse that can do tabloid and works with OSX, check this unit out.

Microtek is a great company with a great product! I recommend this scanner for the professionals who need a larger scanner without the larger price.

3 out of 5 stars Cheap scanner that works OK.......2007-09-25

Bottom line, it's a cheap scanner that gets the job done, if you are willing to play with it a little bit. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to do a simple task - scan multiple page documents into a single PDF file. The software makes this a bit difficult (you have to "scan to email" and then choose a medium-high dpi setting). The hardware is acceptable, for the $55.00 I paid for it on eBay. When I'm rich I'll buy a $1,000 document scanner, but until that time, I'm doing OK with scanners like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Nice when it worked.......2007-09-02

Worked well for about the first year, but now it will not communicate with my computer (all checks of hardware and software have failed me, of course).

4 out of 5 stars It does everything what they say........2007-08-22

I like the product, but one thing. It doesn't scan both sides in one shot. Other than that, everything is good. You could trust everything the company says about the product.

4 out of 5 stars Great; however, watch your paper weight........2007-03-18

First, it copies both sides without have to do the whole resort thing.

It is sensitive to light weight paper with the autofeeder, but hey, use the flatbed feature!

I have not used nor loaded the scanning software - so I will not comment on that. I have always been an Acrobat Pro type guy and it works without a hitch.

One of the best purchases I have done.

2 out of 5 stars Vista Users - RUN AWAY!.......2007-09-09

If you just upgraded your computer and it's running Microsoft Vista, go look at a different brand of scanner. I made the mistake of buying this one just before upgrading to Vista, and after months of promises of Vista drivers from Microtek, they've recently decided not to provide Vista drivers for this one.

    1 out of 5 stars Shoddy hardware/software integration.......2006-03-10

We purchased this product with the expectation of using the automatic document feeder to scan and store documents. We have two other scanners but none with a document feeder. After fiddling with the scanner for hours, and after more than an hour with Micro-tek technical support, we were informed that the Macintosh software controlling the document feeder was defective with no date for any fixes. We were told that we could keep the scanner while checking their web site for fixes, or return the scanner. Conse-quently, as the scanner was of no use to us, we returned it. It is amazing to us that a com-pany can ship a product and software which doesn't work together. We can't imagine that we're the first Macintosh users to test this product, yet it took Microtek technical support more than an hour to figure out the software didn't work. We'll never buy another Micro-tek product again.

    2 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this scanner........2007-08-06

I previously owned a flat bed Microtek years ago and it's still working fine. Unfortunately I can't say the same about this model. The ADF constantly jams and the rollers were noisy. It jams at least once per scan and that's only with 5 sheets of paper. I had it replaced with a new one but it does the exact same thing so I'm returning it for an HP.

    1 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment!!.......2007-06-09

I ordered this scanner for use at work to replace one that had to be at least 10-15 years old and barely functioned anymore. This scanner promised fast scanning speed and excellent quality scans, which is just what I was looking for. It proved to be the exact opposite - this scanner is EXCRUTIATINGLY slow and the scan quality is HORRIBLE. My old, half dead scanner worked WAY better than this one. Don't waste your time or money.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good little scanner.......2007-02-20

Bought this about a week ago to convert my huge collection of personal files to digital format (yes, the paperless dream) After scanning about 1000 docs in the past couple of days, this is what I found:

    Pros:
    - Fast scanning. Using 300 dpi black and white using the ADF, it spits them out just a tad slower than my big copier at work. ADF works well MOST of the time (see below)

    - Pretty decent software. The ScanWizard DI interface is nice because you can scan directly to PDF and into a folder of your choice, with a name of your choice. I've heard that in other programs that takes several steps.

    - Good quality b&W scans. Perfect for my new paperless world.

    Cons:
    - ADF does jam occasionally-- I'd say about one out of 100 pages. Odd thing is, I can't figure out why-- Iv'e thrown a full stack of mangled, dog-eared files in there and it rips through it in no time, while other time it refuses to digest perfectly groomed, clean-edged paper. Still, it hasn't jammed often enough to push me over the edge.

    - NO SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS VISTA!!! Coincidentaly I just bought a new computer at the same time and found out there are NO drivers are available until August 2007! The new computer had to be converted to XP.

So overall, I'd say I'm happy. The occasional jamming issue is a bit irritating, but I think most people won't run it day and night like I did! So if you have moderate b&W scanning needs, i think you'll be happy.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-08-25

This is the worst scanner. I bought this scanner for my office use and when it arrived DEAD out of the box. I then contact Microtek and they thought it was a bad power adapter - 2 power adapters later still NOT working. I finally said to replace my scanner. Sent it back - Microtek gave me a new scanner and that arrived dead too! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER!!!!! Instead purchase a cheaper Scanjet 5590 - I dont see why people dont like them - at least you can expect to come right out of the box and WORK.

    5 out of 5 stars Great scanner.......2006-03-16

This scanner is one of the best scanners out there for this kind of price. Not only was it easy to set up, it is super fast and reliable. I usually scan 10-20 page documents, just black and white and have it save in PDF format. It takes about 2-3 minutes to do a 20 page document. There are so many other features I haven't even look in to. Definitely two thumbs up!!

4 out of 5 stars So Far, this is a good scanner.......2007-07-16

I'm having a few problems scanning "xeroxed" pages (paper not feeding properly), but most of the time, the feeder works great. Paperport is great. Also the abbyy OCR that comes with the scanner is better than the OCRs from most of the big name companies. I would buy this scanner again (I've had 3 previously). With age, I'm hoping the sheet feed hangup will go away. It may also be the humidity.
