5 out of 5 stars So far, so good........2007-09-26

I just received this radio, and it picked up 3-4 weather stations with no problem. Perhaps this is to be expected, but I also just received a Kaito KA009 radio. The Kaito receives static and FM stations on its analog-tuned weatherband, but no weather stations. I haven't used all of the Midland radio's features yet, but compared to the Kaito KA009 it's golden.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Weather Radio.......2007-09-25

I've had this weather radio since spring 2006. It has a very loud alert system for weather watches and warnings. It is a little difficult to set up. That's the reason for the four stars. Bottom line: I wouldn't be without this weather radio.

5 out of 5 stars Great radio.......2007-09-22

Nice radio, great pickup and sound. I would like the siren to be a little louder but other than that it is great. Got here fast too

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-09-17

Great monitor. Does exactly what it is advertised to do. Easy to operate.

5 out of 5 stars Already saved the day!.......2007-09-15

Although we have had a NOAA radio on the boat, it didn't do us any good when a rash of heavy storms came through our area. So we decided to get one for the house. Not two weeks after getting it, it went off in the middle of the night 3:00am. We got up and closed the windows before the storm hit. (Did exactly what we bought it for).

Two features I really like are the SAME settings that allow you to narrow the counties down to just the ones that concern you, and the ability to run on batteries, as we have lost power too. The SAME feature saves you from hearing the alarm go off all the time when a storm is no where near you.

I like that it is small and travels well. We brought it on vacation and used it on one set of batteries the whole time. It is very easy to reconfigure for a new coverage area when traveling, simply set it to "ALL" counties, it saves your SAME settings for when you return. We live in the far suburbs of the Twin Cities, and no need for an external antenna.

In the event of a tornado it could literally save your life!

It is now a staple in our kitchen, and we use it to listen to AM/FM radio all the time. Well worth the money.

ASIN: B0001OHH0Q

Amazon.com Product Description

Stay up to date on all the latest weather, hazard, and civil emergency information with the Midland WR-100B monitor. Capable of receiving seven National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA) channels--each of which receives emergency advisories on tornadoes, floods, severe thunderstorms, civil danger warnings, and more--the WR-100B is a must for people who live in high-risk weather areas, such as the Southeast or Midwest. Plus, the seven NOAA channels offer coverage for roughly 93 percent of the U.S., so most people are well covered regardless of where they live.

Another valuable function is the monitor's Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) reception. SAME allows users to program the radio to sound an alert only when weather and other emergencies threaten a selected county or counties. The technology eliminates all alerts from other areas, so users won't have to perk up their ears each time the alert sounds only to find the emergency is actually 100 miles up the highway. In addition, the WR-100B's memory system accepts up to 25 counties, so you can monitor a broad swatch of counties at once or restrict it to one.

Should an alert occur, users have a choice of three warning systems: a 90 dB siren, a voice alert, or a flashing red LED light. The siren is the best option for people with larger homes or who aren't always near the monitor, while the latter two options work well for smaller homes. Additional features include a clock with an alarm and a snooze button, an emergency power backup that keeps your radio working during power outages or outdoor use, and external antenna and alert jacks.

The WR-100B, which works with three AA batteries (not included), measures 5.12 by 2 by 6.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice radio for the price.......2007-09-23

Since I have only had my WR-100B for a short time, I have not yet had the opportunity to experience a severe weather alert. I guess this is a good thing. I just hope it will do it's job when the time for the next tornado warning comes. I really would have had many opportunities to hear this radio work had I purchased it earlier in the spring. We had a rough spring/summer here in central Illinois!

Aside from waiting to hear the actual alert in person, the radio is nice and compact, taking up only a small area of my kitchen counter. To avoid static/interference when using the attached telescopic antenna in a kitchen, you need to try to keep the radio away from electrical sources, (undercabinet light fixtures, microwaves etc.). If you place it in a bedroom or other location, these issues should be eliminated. There is a built in jack on the back to hook up an externally mounted antenna if you find reception a problem. This would probably only apply to those of you living WAY OUT in the country!

The instructions are fairly easy to understand when it comes to programming your frequencies but those who lack electronics confidence may find this process a bit challenging. Just take your time and read slowly. You will need to manually enter the frequencies of the geographically closest weather reporting stations. The instruction book gives you all the needed information. Otherwise you can get the frequencies online at www.nws.noaa.gov.

If you don't want to spend a fortune and want a well built, nice looking weather radio, you can't go wrong with this unit. Midland has been in the radio business for a long time and know what they are doing.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted at a good price.......2007-09-16

I was looking for a small, affordable weather alert radio that would wake me up in the middle of the night if a tornado or severe storm was approaching. From other reviews, Midland seemed to be the leader in reliability and performance. This unit got it's first test the night I received it and it worked as advertised. It's easy to set up and takes very little space. I am completely satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy. Could save your life........2007-09-06

Excellent Weather Radio! Love that I can set it to my county(SAME). Easy to set-up. Bought another for my mother. Makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars Great weather radio!.......2007-08-26

I live in a rural area and have been searching for a weather radio that actually gets reception where I live (which is also in a valley). I have bought several models from Walmart only to return them because I could get no reception. My mother has this Midland radio and recommended that I try it. I love it! I am a stay-at-home mom and childcare provider. I rarely have the radio or weather on, so it is comforting to know that I can count on my Midland weather radio to warn me if necessary. Also, the SAME feature only warns me when my county is affected, so I don't need to run in to listen about some other county's warning.

4 out of 5 stars weather alert radio.......2007-08-23

Midland WR-100B SAME Weather and All Hazards Alert Monitor with Alarm Clock I used my Amazon credit card for the first time (applied for the card over two years ago, but never used it until now) with this purchase, so with free freight and the $30 credit the net cost was a little over $3. For that price, this radio is incredible. Looks, sounds and feels a little cheap, (it was) but once placed in the front window the reception is fine. Instructions were clear and setup was quick. Mostly silent, but the alarm will wake the dead when it goes off. Good buy, even if you don't apply for the credit card. A must have if you live in tornado country.

1 out of 5 stars Read their one year warranty term.......2007-08-24

If the product failed within one year, you need to pay for the shipping fee plus $20.50 for their shipping and handling fee, to have the radio repaired for FREE. That is already $30. Over one year? A FLAT rate of $45 more for fix it! How much this radio cost? I will never buy from such a company.

4 out of 5 stars Great product to have.......2007-08-16

The weather radio works great! The first day we set it up we were alerted of a severe thunderstorm off to the east. Very simple to use. Tones can be set to your liking. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good Radio.......2007-07-27

The Radio works fine. It is easy to program. I selected the two counties that I want weather alarms for. Of course that means it will wake me at night for a thunderstorm or a tornado (no choice of danger). Radio is completely squelched off until an alarm is received. Or you can push a button and hear weather news at any time.

The radio is advertised as various models, delineated by no letter, a "B" or a "C", but according to someone I talked with at Midland, the letters refer only to packaging. There is only a model 100.

5 out of 5 stars STAY INFORMED!.......2007-07-21

This is a great little radio that does what Midland claims it will do! When a weather bulletin is broadcast, an alarm sounds to get your attention then the broadcast begins! That is the alert option I have chosen. This thing is very handy to have at home or at work, especially if you are the decision maker about sending people home or closing down the shop and things of that nature. Once you have been alerted you can turn on a TV (if one is available) or get on the phone to obtain more details about the potential or impending weather.

5 out of 5 stars Peace of Mind for People who live in areas with bad weather.......2007-07-09

This unit was actually delivered to me Thursday and we had our first severe weather of this season on Sunday, four days later.

This radio allows you to listen to weather forecasts at any time want to by pressing one button (when you first get the radio choose one of seven frequencies for which you get the best reception.)

The best part of this radio is the "S.A.M.E." technology which only sounds alarms for severe weather in the in the county where you live. You can choose to have alarms sounds for multiple counties area your area refer if you prefer.

Because the National weather service station in my area covers such a large area, severe weather watches and warnings are very common. The "S.A.M.E" Technology allows the radio to sound the alarm only when severe weather threatens the county in which I live.

The radio is easy to program and the user's manual answered any questions I had.

Amazon.com Review

If you're looking for a solid pocket radio, and you think you might enjoy tuning in broadcasts from around the globe, then the Grundig Mini 300 might be the choice for you. This radio doesn't have the powerful features and reception of a higher-end shortwave radio, such as Etón's E1XM, but it does offer a convenient, pocket-sized way to bring clear AM/FM, and limited shortwave radio reception anywhere you go.

Small, sleek, and handy. The Mini 300 is ready to tune in the world wherever the notion strikes you. View larger.
Design and Controls
Measuring in at a tiny 4.5 x 2.5 x 0.75 inches and weighing only 4.5 ounces, this radio is certainly in the pocket-sized category. Grundig has spiced up pocket radio design with the Mini 300, offering this model in an array of attractive colors. In addition to the bronze we tested, this radio is also available in yellow, pearl, red, and blue. The tuning and volume dials, as well as the band selection switch, are found on the narrow sides of the unit. These controls are well-placed and can be operated with one hand. The front of the unit features the LCD display, power button, and a few push-button keys for setting the time, alarm, and sleep functions.

On the left side of the Mini 300 you will find a 3.5mm connector for headphones. Grundig has included a set of earbuds for private listening right out of the box, or the small, built-in speaker on the front of the device allows you to share broadcasts with other listeners. The Mini 300 gets its reception through a built in "stub" antenna that sticks up 2.25-inches above the device, and then extends an additional 20 inches. Although the compact design is handy for on-the-go listening, the "stub" portion of the antenna does make the Mini 300 feel a bit bigger than it should. A fully retractable antenna would have made this tiny radio a bit more travel-friendly.

The two dials on the right side of the unit control tuning and volume. The dials have a nice smooth action, but a note of caution: The dials can be easily -- very easily -- moved from their position. This is less of an issue with volume control, but for fine-tuning reception, you might find yourself re-tuning stations if you bump the tuning dial.

The Mini 300 is easy-to-use with a row of push-button keys and a convenient headphone jack. View larger.
LCD Display
The Mini 300's LCD display is crisp and clear, with a clean layout that makes it easy to control the radio's tuning, clock, and timer functions. The display has icons that indicate when the alarm and sleep function are turned on -- a small loudspeaker and a bed, respectively. And as you flip through bands, the display indicates AM, FM, or shortwave selection.

There are two minor downsides to the display. First of all, there is no indication of which shortwave band you've selected. The Mini 300 is equipped to tune an array of bands -- 49, 41, 31, 25, 22, 19 and 16 meters -- but regardless of your selection, the radio consistently displays a single "SW" for shortwave. Also, you cannot see the time of day when the radio is turned on; time is only displayed when the unit is powered down. Nonetheless, important data, such as band and tuned station, are easy to read, and the size of the radio certainly outweighs the limited information presented on the LCD display.

Tuning Options
Tuning the Mini 300 is very straightforward. The radio tunes MW (commonly known as AM), FM, and shortwave signals. If you're new to shortwave, you'll have to take your time to find just the right frequency, as the Mini 300 does not offer an auto-scan function. Yet, even with our limited knowledge of shortwave broadcasts, we made several discoveries, and heard stations from around the world. Unfortunately, given our limited language skills, we did find it difficult to always know exactly to whom or what we were listening! Even though the tuning dial is a simple, traditional design, meticulous tuning was easy and reliable.

After a little research and a good amount of time spent playing with the tuning options, we did discover that our best opportunity for tuning shortwave broadcasts was in the evening. AM and FM broadcasts sounded strong and clear, day or night, and we enjoyed listening to the radio on the bus and at the park. The Mini 300 runs exclusively off of two AA batteries (included).

Amazon.com Product Description

If you need a compact, highly portable way to bring AM/FM reception, as well as world broadcasts with you, the Grundig Mini 300 provides a nice solution. Weighing in at just 4.5 ounces and measuring 4.5 x 2.5 inches (H x W), this little companion slides into your pocket with ease. Its oversized telescopic antenna provides great AM/FM reception when you're camping, hiking, listening to sports, or just relaxing in the backyard. And because it can receive seven shortwave bands, you'll have access to both local and international news and music wherever you go.

Design and Controls
The Mini 300 is designed for simplicity and ease of use. The antenna housing extends above the device, and it contains a long-range antenna for receiving distant broadcasts. Four buttons below the large, easy-to-read LCD control time, alarm, sleep timer, and power on/off functions. The LCD display shows frequency, time, sleep time, and symbols for sleep timer and alarm activation. Meanwhile, tuning, volume, and band selection are handled by controls on the side of the device. A small speaker below the control buttons produces pleasing sound, or you can hook up a pair of stereo earbuds (included).

Tuning and Bands
Thanks to the Mini 300's reception of AM, FM, and seven shortwave bands, you can use the analog tuner to tune into your favorite local stations, as well as far-flung international broadcasts from around the world. The shortwave receiver operates on the following bands: 49, 41, 31, 25, 22, 19 and 16 meters. In addition to the telescoping FM and shortwave antenna, the unit contains an internal ferrite bar antenna for AM reception.

1 out of 5 stars Not a good buy..........2007-09-11

I like to go on long distance backpacking trips. The Colorado Trail, The PCT, etc. I enjoy having a small radio with me on trips over 7 days in length. However weight is always an issue. I own a Grundig Yacht Boy 300 PE and I love it. It is a great, dependable well made radio. However I wanted to shed a few ounces off my carrying weight so I purchased a Grundig M300P Mini300 Handheld. It is very poorly made. It is encased in a cheap plastic that is light, but not sturdy. The cover for the batteries won't stay shut and the tuner doesn't function properly. It is a very cheap radio and is not even worth the low price it is already listed at. I am not sure if ownership of Grundig has changed in the last few years and this is their new standard of quality or if this product line is just a fluke. My yachtboy has traveled with me over hundreds of miles and adverse weather and still works great. The antenna broke due to mishandling and it still has great reception. My advice is not to buy the Grundig M300P Mini300 Handheld, but don't rule out Grundig just yet.

3 out of 5 stars nice, but not what i expected.......2007-09-03

it's an ok portable radio. the sound quality is good for its size, and the AM/FM reception is clear if you're near a window. the problem is that even on top of a hill i managed to find only a handful of Short Wave stations (the religious ones...).

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Radio.......2007-08-09

This Grundig Mini radio is just what I expected. Great reception on all bands and I love the feel of the radio. The fine tuning has a tendency to drift sometimes but not enough to be real concerned about. If you want a great little radio with am,fm and short wave this is the one. I love this radio!

Product Description

Is the world getting smaller? At under 5 ounces, the Grundig Mini 300 is pocket-sized but power-packed - capable of receiving AM, FM and seven Shortwave bands. Its crystal clear reception, easy operation, and large LCD screen with alarm function make the Mini 300 the indispensable companion to bring to the ballgame, on your next road trip, or along for any simple pleasures.

In addition to the red we tested, this radio is also available in yellow, pearl, bronze, and blue.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing More, Nothing Less.......2007-07-22

This little unit is easy to set up and has the SAME functionality which is important to me since I didn't want to hear warnings for places that weren't near to me. Other units I looked at had extra options like AM/FM radio but I didn't need those features. I just wanted something that would wake me up if a tornado was coming my way. This will warn you of many other things and you can set what you want to be notified about. Follow the instructions, it's pretty easy. It also will take rechargeable NiMH or Ni-Cad batteries and keep them charged. Or, you can switch it to accept Alkaline. The battery backup is important to have. Great unit, no complaints.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-06-23

I had been looking at the Midland model 300. But after a whopper t-storm rolled through the other night, I high-tailed it over to Circuit City for a browse. They only had this F.A. model, and it was hideously overpriced (CC is competitive on some products, not close on others...go figure). So I bought it. Set-up was easy. Haven't had any alerts yet. Will return for a revised review after the next storm hits.

5 out of 5 stars Paid for itself in the first two days of use.......2007-06-06

This radio arrived (and was set up) two days before very heavy thunderstorms with hail and high winds hit my area. It was early evening and the weather looked sunny and clear outside, when this thing goes off for no apparent reason. I thought it was a mistake or false alarm, but when I turned on the cable weather channel the radar showed a huge thunder storm rapidly forming in the West and moving my way. It's very late in the Spring season right now for a storm like this and I wasn't expecting any harsh weather. I had time to get the cars under cover, find the cat & put her inside and bring in the outdoor furniture cushions before the storm hit. In our neighborhood, we lost some big limbs a few trees and some cars were damaged by hail. Fortunately, I had no damage.

The instructions are not very complicated and the set-up was much, much easier than that required for a VCR or TIVO. It has battery back-up in case the power goes off and doesn't take up a lot of space on the night stand or dresser. Also, you can program which alerts you want to hear and limit the alerts to those applicable to only the County you live in. This really cuts down on unnecessary alarms. For example, though we are in an area that can have flash floods, I don't need this warning because I don't go out in heavy rain or flooding anyway. A warning about a storm only is sufficient. I think I might get this radio as a gift for some elderly friends and relatives of mine. It's a good and very unobtrusive watchdog.

Amazon.com Product Description

Stay informed of current local weather and hazard conditions whether you're camping, hiking, hunting, or just hanging around the house with this handheld Midland weather alert radio. Capable of receiving seven National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA) channels--each of which receives emergency advisories on tornadoes, floods, severe thunderstorms, civil danger warnings, and more--the 74-250C is a must for people who live in high-risk weather areas, or for people who just want a little extra protection when hitting the outdoors. Plus, the seven NOAA channels offer coverage for roughly 93 percent of the U.S., so most residents are well covered regardless of where they live.

Another valuable function is the radio's Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) reception. SAME allows users to program the radio to sound an alert only when weather and other emergencies threaten a specific county or counties. The technology eliminates all alerts from other areas, so users won't perk up their ears each time the alert sounds only to learn that the emergency is actually 100 miles up the highway. The 74-250C's memory system accepts up to nine counties, so you can monitor a broad swatch of counties at once or restrict it to one.

Should an alert occur, users have a choice of three warning systems: a 90 dB siren, a voice alert, or a flashing red LED light. The siren is the best option for people who might not have their radios nearby at all times, while the latter two alerts are a bit less extreme on the ears. The digital panel, meanwhile, displays up to 56 messages, so you'll instantly know what's coming your way. Additional features include a built-in thermometer with a freeze alert that notifies you when the temperature drops below freezing, a full-function clock with an alarm and snooze button, an external earphone jack, and a water-resistant housing.

The radio, which works with two AA batteries (not included), measures 2.38 by 4 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

3 out of 5 stars Easier than I thought to program.......2007-07-06

I almost decided against purchasing this radio after reading the reviews concerning the difficulties people had programming this unit. However, I found a good deal so decided to give it a whirl. Well, I had very little trouble programming it and didn't find the directions all that unclear. I don't know if my lack of sleep was a plus or a minus but do know I had it programed pretty quickly.

Unfortunately I had another problem with it...there must be a loose connection in the headphone jack because you cannot hear anything over the speaker unless you manage to find and press the "sweet spot" which is somewhere on the rubber pad that covers the headphone and rechargeable battery connection. So, it'll have to go back but I am going to ask for a replacement as it works fine otherwise. I would not use the SAME technology for a long time as it eats up batteries...

3 out of 5 stars Is what's expected.......2007-05-25

It's a nice radio, but the instructions are awful. It's hard to figure out what you're supposed to do with it. Pushing mode takes you through the listening/display options.. but what then? Does it alert you to incoming storms in ANY mode.

Batteries seem to wear out fast.. it doesn't come with a cord even if you did have rechargeables.

Midland, are you listening, give us a charge chord!

EDIT: I have posted another review of this, after having it for a number of weeks.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of junk.......2007-05-06

I consider myself to be fairly computer literate -- I chase storms with a laptop hooked up to a GPS unit attached to a virtual COM splitter feeding into several mapping and radar programs, all while sucking data down via EVDO on my mobile phone. I've been using computers since before there were graphical user interfaces. That said, figuring out how to even change the channel on this radio was like learning how to defuse a bomb built by a dyslexic, colorblind spidermonkey. Doing anything requires pressing a recursive set of buttons in a specific order, and each button press is accompanied by a loud, shrill beep that will kill mosquitos and make everyone within 20 feet of you begin stabbing each other in senseless anger. I swear to god whoever designed the user interface to this radio was angry with the world and was misanthropically looking for ways get back at the universe that created him. The feeling you get once you manage to actually figure out how to set the time, station, and SAME code on this radio would be akin to the feeling one gets after summiting K-2 without oxygen, sherpas, or legs, if only for the fact that deep down inside you will realize that you are not cool and you will never see K-2 and that the sum total accomplishment of your life is getting the cheap, plastic piece of junk you hold in your hands to turn on. The AA batteries run down after about a week even if you never turn the actual radio on, and the settings all go away when you replace the batteries, so you are sure to have hours of fun several times a month rexplaining your radio with six digit random Navajo code numbers exactly where you live.

The plus side to this radio is that the cheap speaker hides the hiss of static fairly well, which you will hear often due to the extremely poor reception. The stylish "eyerape" yellow will go great with your Mexican Hornet wrestling costume, and handy belt clip-on will be sure to attact muggers who will beat you for your expensive radio and then come back and beat you again after they spend three fruitless hours trying to program in the SAME code for their cardboard box under the bridge.

In summary, I suggest that nobody ever buy this radio. The only useful purpose I can devise for these units are to mark land-mines, since surely a field full of these radios would be enough to deter people of any nationality from approaching.

2 out of 5 stars Works well but tak a pass on purchase.......2007-04-21

This unit is difficult to set up as the functions are not at all intuitive. Once set up it performs well but battery life is short lived, about a week at most. After changing batteries you have to redo the complete setup again. There is an external battery charger port for rechargable batteries but no mention of how to purchase a charger.
There are other units that are user friendly w/ chargers in the same price range. Purchase one of them.

3 out of 5 stars poor instructions.......2007-03-14

the instructions were very complicated. if i had been previe to the instructions before buying i would not have purchased this item.

In addition to the blue we tested, this radio is also available in yellow, pearl, bronze, and red.

2 out of 5 stars BEST $5.00 RADIO I EVER BOUGHT.......2007-09-20

Grundig sold out. Hard to tune. If it would have been $5.00 w/free shipping, it would be a pretty good deal.

5 out of 5 stars best little gadget.......2007-08-09

for the price it is the best, ii is small but loud and digital which is very nice. have not tried the worldband but i know i will like it too.
