CenDyne CDI CD00085 - Surprising Value.......2002-04-17

I picked this DVD-ROM drive up locally because it was marked down by more than 30%. This was lower than anything I've seen on-line. I was apprehensive - How could anything so inexpensive be any good? It turns out that this CenDyne CDI CD00085 DVD-ROM drive is solidly built, relatively quiet, works flawlessly and is worth more than I paid. (I have a HP CD-RW that seems pretty flimsy and cheap by comparison.) The software (WIN DVD) that came with the unit is pretty good too.

The one hang up- the documentation is POOR at best. The quality of the graphics in the installation guide was so bad, I could barely make out any detail. The software came with NO documentation.

In spite of this, the installation on my old Dimension XPST700r went pretty well with out any problems. (Fortunately, Dell has pretty good hardware and documentation.) I've also had the benefit of installing hardware before. I wouldn't recommend this "kit" as your first attempt to upgrade your hardware. It'll be pretty nerve wracking.

But if you know what you're doing and you're looking for a decent DVD-ROM drive to upgrade that old computer, this is definitely worth the look.

Great Product. Equivalent to the Ricoh model but cheaper........2001-05-10

I received the product rather fast and it took me only a little less than an hour to install and configure software.

This unit is very similar to the Ricoh unit that has been getting the raves in PC WOrld Magazine, etc.

In fact, it is the Ricoh unit!!! However, it is much cheaper!! What a bargain.

How do I know? It says so right on the chassis, "Ricoh Corporation" I'm just not paying for the name since it is being private label (OEM'd) to Cendyne.

Great buy. Very highly recommended.

I am thrilled!.......2001-04-12

I just received the CenDyne 12x10x32x8 EIDE Internal CDRW/DVD Combo Drive (PC Only)and had it setup in 3 hours. It only took that long because I goofed up and set it as a slave when it should have been the master. I have now recorded my first CD and it worked perfectly. My only complaint was the directions were not all that good. It was not clear on how to make the CD Rom the master. But I figured it out on my own. This is the first time I have done any kind of a hardware upgrade on any PC and the first time I even took the cover off my Dell Dimension XPS T500. What a great price for a great piece of hardware! Thanks Cendyne!

I bought this dvd drive a couple of months ago ... . It was an advertised special ... . Took drive home and installed with no problems. This is a typical ide drive install with jumper settings and rail/or screw instsallation to hold in place. Software included is powerdvd a wonderful player. The only con to this drive is the spin up noise and the delay in ejecting media. Overall this is an excellent choice ... .

Brand name Japeneese DVD-rom drives are running about $25

This is the first cd-rom drive I have ever installed. It went in and was up and running with little or no problems. Just got done watching my first full-length film on it (Training Day) as a tester, and no glitches.
The Picture is clean and the sound is incredible. I plan on making this my dvd player for my home theater once I plug the s-video cable into my 31" tv. I am happily surprised that it works this well for what I paid for it.
The installation instructions can throw you a bit if you're not familiar with installing cd-rom drives (like I was). If this is a secondary drive, make sure you set the jumper on your original drive to "master", and the jumper on this dvd drive to "slave". I did it this way just because my original cd-rw drive came with my computer and just kept it the primary drive.
Other than that, it's a good all around DVD player. For the price..you can't go wrong. It's economical and will serve all your DVD-rom purposes.

A Good Buy.......2001-11-06

I have had the DVD drive for a couple of weeks now, and have had no problems. The installation guide is brief. The drive might be difficult to install if you are a computer novice, so have an IT friend "on call" if you plan to do it yourself (the reason for 4 not 5 stars). I have had no problems reading DVDs or CD-ROMs on the drive. I have an 850 MHz Athlon machine with a good graphics card but with no decoder card and have only experienced minimal delays when viewing DVDs. Overall a very good buy, I'd highly recommend it.

Extremely disappointed.......2006-08-22

This coby product functioned only two months for me. Hardly worth spending the money on.

Failed for no reason with only a 90 day warranty.......2006-07-18

At first I thought very highly of this player because of its compact size and price, but with rare use meaning at most once a week it failed to read discs after only six months. I was well aware of Coby's Shoddy reputation but decided foolishly to take the gamble that obviously did not pay off. Shortly after the 3 month warranty period (a ridiculously short time for an electronic device) one day for no reason it failed to read any discs. This comes on top of the fact that when I first purchased it wouldn't even play dual layered discs which I accepted as a price to pay for such a reasonable price point. Upon retrospect I gave Coby $100 for nothing, and when I could finally get through to their horrible customer service after the fourth time calling. I was told that I had to give them $31.00 to receive the same old piece of crap how ridiculous is that. My advice is pay more get more and steer clear of companies that don't give a damn about their customers. I highly recommend the Philips company or to a lesser extent Sony. (and no I do not and have not ever worked for either company)

Right out of the box the car adapter was DOA. After 4 months the screen stopped displaying video. I called Coby support, they wanted to charge me $31 despite their website stating that the after 90 day replacement is $6. I should have known better and followed my instincts, you truly do get what you pay for.

Do NOT Buy This Product.......2006-05-03

My player worked less than a dozen times (and this was for 30 minute yoga lessons). If a company gives you only a 90 day warranty, you should know already that the quality is not such that they expect it to last long. I try to buy from companies I haven't heard of to give them a boost against the big names. Their service department was completely indifferent so the unit is in the trash and the battery recycled. Now I have the speaker units i had to buy in order to hear my lessons and no player.

Awful treatment from Service.......2006-04-21

When the unit stop working after 3 weeks, we returned it under warranty. Althught the warranty that came with the unit said nothing about return shipping, Coby insisted that we pay the return shipping fees. Then they sent back a model 500 instead of the 500. I had to contact corporate to get an explanation and they offered several, one was that the 500 was better because it's listed as a best seller in one magazine. Another explantion was that they were out of 5000s so they sent a 500. Basically, after 4 months we're left with a model we didn't want, that isn't the one we paid for and it seems like Coby could not care less.

We think this treatment is unfair and wrong.

We won't purchase or use Coby products again.
